CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Steve Donovan
Thanks to all members who contributed to the success of Art Deco Rally 2021. Although there was confusion with many as Art Deco Trust Cancelled the Event we managed to get enough Emails out advising our entrants that we were continuing with our programme. Numbers were down but not as much as expected. People travelled from one end of New Zealand to the other. There have been many positive comments about our event and they will be back next year. Entrants appreciated that the event carried on. It was sad we did not have a parade as there were enough cars in town to put on a spectacular display. Thursday night went off very well as we were a considerable number down, but with many other venues closed people took up the opportunity to come along and enjoy Entertainment and a witty MC Ian Elmsly, food was great also. Visit to Puketapu School went very well, thanks to Veteran car owners who gave rides to all pupils. They were lined up by teachers and were very courteous and well behaved children. We will have some letters

to share with you in Club Rooms. Friday dawned with a fantastic day ahead but not for me I had to miss remainder of weekend. From the regular reports and well wishes it would appear all went well and members filled in as required. The committee have some follow up work which will be put in place at next meeting and report back to members at next Branch Meeting.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Trevor Charman
Wednesday the 10th was our club night and our guest speaker was Susan Jacobs from the Napier Citizens Advice Bureau. Susan was a most informative speaker but unfortunately only 32 members attended. CAB was set up at the start of World War 2 and is run solely by volunteers, receives no government funding but receives some funding from the NCC which only covers their rent. There are 81 branches throughout NZ. They continued to operate, mainly by phone from their private homes during the Covid 19 lock down and assisted 28,000 people. CAB is a free confidential, independent, information and advice service, where someone will listen, and you will not be judged. They will give advice and help people to learn and understand their rights and responsibilities, give direction to community services, emergency housing, tenancy issues, immigration, families and relationships, health, education, benefits, money, debt, food parcels. They will assist to help fill in forms, write letters, have a JP on hand for signing legal documents and volunteer lawyers also available. Many thanks to Susan Jacobs for giving up her time to come along and speak to us. Sunday the 14th was the club’s monthly run for a picnic at Waipatiki beach. Unfortunately the day was not well supported with only 11 cars and 21 members attending. The day was a normal Hawkes Bay summers day, a warm 25 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. After checking out the main parking area close to the beach and toilets we decided to settle at an area alongside the main access under some very large willows and poplar trees which
gave us a mix of sun and shade. After a very long and relaxing lunch most of us walked down to the beach to check out the water and the views. By 2.30 pm everyone had headed off home, with even better views through to Napier on the return trip, some choosing to travel the extra distance [3kms] to check out Tangoio, and the new subdivision of 38 sections being developed there. Unfortunately the mobile ice cream outlet was not at Waipatiki, so we had to indulge at Westshore on the way home. I am sure that a pleasant day was had by all. February 17th, 18th 19th, 20th 21st, was Art Deco. I am sure that there will be a more detailed reports at a later date. From a personal point of view I believe that it all went very well despite the uncertainty involved due to Covid 19 and the associated levels of control. I must complement Steve Donovan, Steve Trott and the committee for their dedication to box on and make as much as they could happen, with every one of the HBVCC planned events taking place. I believe that the 5 days were appreciated by every entrant, just a pity that the Art Deco Trust cancelled early. The public did not get to see many of the cars which boost the atmosphere, but more cars than expected were in town. I counted 90 veterans and vintages at the Friday lunch venue, 95 on Saturday and I saw more arrive after I stopped counting. Several entrants even said that they enjoyed this Art Deco Event more with no rush, more time to see the cars and to just sit and chat, I must admit it was very nice sitting in the shade of the trees during the very hot weather. Thank you to the volunteers and kitchen crews who all helped to make the event happen. Many thanks. 7

Assemble at the HBVCC club rooms at 10.45am for an 11.00 am departure. This will be short run, [one hour] for a picnic in a private garden located between Hastings and Clive. Bring your picnic lunch, chairs etc with you. Come along and enjoy a relaxed social picnic in the garden with plenty of shade.

HBVCC Safari Rally 2021. I am calling for expressions of interest for our Safari Rally, Labour weekend this year. We are planning to go to Whanganui and I have been having considerable difficulty securing accommodation. There is another large function in town at the same time. The government have taken over several motels and numerous motels are asking for substantial deposits before they will pencil in any accommodation. However, hopefully, I have secured sufficient units but the FINAL CUT OFF DATE for conformation and deposits to be paid, will be the 28th of June 2021. Yes a long way away from October but seems to be the sign of the times. We have a lot of other details to arrange yet but I will advertise Safari as soon as possible. THURSDAY VCC ART DECO PUKETAPU SCHOOL// Thank you for a wonderful Art Deco day. It was amazing to be able to give all the children rides in the cars. And your organisation with the quiz, which must have been very tricky when some cars couldn't come, was great. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and the rides. Thank you so so much. We are also really grateful for the prizes that you have sourced for the quiz and I am looking forward to giving out the Hooters voucher and the vouchers from the Puketapu Hotel The children would very much like to write some letters to say thanks. Can you please give me an address to send these too? MID WEEK RUN// By Trevor Charman
This month the run was organised by Wayne and Marie Evans an exceptionally good and most informative run it was, unfortunately only 9 cars 16 members attended. The run took us through Puketapu and around the Fernhill area. Our most informative stop was at an orchard that grew apples pears and Kiwi fruit. Naturally one of the first comments made by our host was that their biggest issues were labour and bureaucracy. The main reason for the visit was because the orchard has been set up with purpose built housing especially for RSE workers. Their work force is running at 2/3 RSE workers, they would like more and can accommodate up to 80 RSE workers. Unfortunately at this time there are not backpackers around and normally only one out of ten WINZ workers last the season from lack of attitude, motivation, sick or drugs. The orchard has been using RSE’s for 9 years, some of the staff have been coming for 8 years. They come for 6 months at a time and are treated as extended family. Their main object is to send as many $’s home as possible. Most have up to three generations living in tiny accommodation and schooling has to be paid for, so they are motivated and respect the opportunity to be able to work. The newly built accommodation blocks house up to 12 males, two per room, each block has 3 toilets, 3 showers, common room / kitchen, and a large outdoor deck, facing a common green with a volley ball court. They have rosters for cleaning, cooking March 2021
breakfast, making lunches, cooking the evening meals. There is a certain amount of food supplied to encourage healthy living and cooking lessons are given as well. The rooms are inspected daily, with competitions for the cleanest house. The blocks are double glazed, fully insulated and have air conditioning. One block is just for training and recreation, complete with pool tables. Training given ranges from cooking, money management, building, solar power, to septic tank installation. The employers are responsible for the s RSE’s from when the leave their home town, paying their wages from that date, [the current living wage,] air fares, and isolation costs when they arrive in NZ, this amounts to about $8000.00 per person to get them on site. From the orchard visit we travelled to Wayne and Marie Evens property for our picnic lunch in the shade of large trees. We also had the opportunity to inspect Wayne’s two motor bikes a 1981 Honda CX500, this has been owned by Wayne for 30 years and owned by other HBVCC members prior to Wayne. The bike had been owned by Terry Farmer, Glyn Clements and was purchased off Bruce McKechnie. Wayne also had a 1959 Zundap, two Massey Ferguson tractors, a 1953 Ferguson 24, purchased new by Wayne’s Father and a 1973 Massey Ferguson 148 Multi power. A most enjoyable day was had by all. Entries Close 30th April 2021 LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!! The CHB VCC Twilight/Night Rally starts at 3.15pm at “Pioneer Corner”, Tavistock Place, Waipukurau. The first car away will leave at 3.30pm. There will be a visit to a hotel for soup and buns during the event. Dinner and prize giving will be held at the end of the run in a licensed venue in Central Hawke’s Bay. You are advised to fuel up before the start. Please bring a torch.
Regulations for the Event:
1. Entrants must be current financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand or guests of a financial member of the VCC. 2. The event is open to all vehicles as recognized by the club, which must be up to the club’s accepted standards regarding cleanliness, general and mechanical condition. The organiser may refuse to start any vehicle, which in his opinion fails to meet that standard. Modern non-competitive vehicles will be accepted as entries. 3. The rally organiser reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose conduct in his opinion is likely to bring discredit to the event or to the club. The ruling regarding any matters in respect of the running of the event will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. 4. The New Zealand Road Code Rules must be obeyed at all times. 5. The organiser reserves the right to add supplementary regulations or instructions at any time during the running of the event. March 2021
SPARES NEWS// By John Durry Hi All, We are working our way through the list and have 3 items marked off this month, we had a couple of members clearing out there sheds and this has kept the team very busy putting these treasures away. A big thanks to them all. One item of interest is a car trunk,photo attached, which I’m sure will have someones name on it, please note the sloping back on this trunk. Sorry I made a mistake on last months report, the front axle was from a Chev not a Ford. We have had a lot of interest in the spares dept, over the Art Deco weekend, and made some good sales including the Jag gearbox, we also had a lot of comments regarding how tidy & well set out the spares are, a credit to the team.
