CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
As we roll over yet another month, we also close off another year of Vintage Car Motoring and head into the AGM. With the year drawing to a close, I would like to thank the Committee for their support over the year and the general membership of the HBVCC. Without active members clubs like these struggle to function. It has been an interesting year with the Committee constantly looking at ways to engage members and provide a club that delivers the expectations of the majority of members. As with most clubs you are never going to satisfy all but rest assured as your Chairman and committee we strive to cater for as bigger percentage as we can. Using the electronic delivery platform we are trying to get more frequent communications out to people to ensure we have as many as possible turning out to runs, meetings and general events. As you all know, there is nothing more frustrating than putting in all the effort only to have a small number of participants turn up on the day! With this happening you have to ask the question that just maybe we reduce runs in particular, to less frequency. This is clearly something the new committee may need to consider.
With the AGM we have a core of volunteers that continue to offer their time and for these people we should be grateful, however, we must always be looking for new faces and ideas, while retaining the historic features of the club as a base to work from. It has been good this past year to have newer members putting themselves forward together with being able to “recycle” the odd person back onto committee which gives a good mix of ideas and a strong link with the past. While nominations have been open for some weeks, if you haven’t put yourself forward and would like to, there is still time. Don’t be shy! But remember, just because you are not on the committee, there is no reason you can’t offer to put on a run or cook a meal! Over the past year, we have had a number of interesting runs and events, with good and bad attendance, some serious (like hosting the National AGM in August) and some light hearted events where we hope you all had a chance to laugh. (Better than pills they say!) But overall we hope you had enjoyment out of your membership. Going forward, we hope to see you all out and about and enjoying the Club and what it offers, enjoy your cars, drive safely and most of all –laugh! All the best.

CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
The weather behaved itself last Sunday with the golden autumn still hanging in there, which was great for our monthly club run up Puketitiri Road to visit the Hammond family. We tried some key swopping, ie swopping navigators which a few were prepared to go along with, then it was the great Jelly bean hunt around the town, before getting back on the straight and narrow and heading out through picturesque Rissington to our destination. Many thanks to Neil and Jill for showing us their projects, the garden and telling us the history of the house, it was a really great afternoon. The winners with the highest scoring Jellybean collection were Peter and Helen Ball, at the other end of the scale were Dick and Lesley Clark who had chosen all the same colour because they liked them the best and these just happened to have the lowest value. It was good to see some new members out ie Leighton and Sarah Peacock in their Mini and some members we haven’t seen out for awhile Alastair and Coral Aldridge in their early 50’s Austin Atlantic, also making its first appearance on a club run was the 1939 Ford Standard Sedan recently restored by Bryan O’Brian Look out in this MAG for details of our June run, this is our annual Lady Drivers run, which this year is been organised by Lee Anne Freemen, the run is not only for the women drivers, it is open to all club members. But the winner has to be a women driver in a club eligible vehicle. Winter Art Deco is on the weekend of the
20/21st July, we will do the car rides around lunchtime on Saturday this year we will be raising funds for the St Johns Ambulance Association, on Sunday there will be an afternoon Auto Ramble ending at a venue yet to be finalised. National VCC Day is at the end of August and somewhere in there we will have the Restoration Run/Shed Raid that I mentioned last month. Speaking of future club outings, November is approaching fast and I am looking for a venue for the Homestead run, if you have any contacts or suggestions please let me know. Then don’t forget our annual Safari this year is to Gisborne, it is been organised by Lesley and Malcolm Blair in conjunction with the Gisborne Branch. Entry forms will be out in a couple of months. The dates are the 25th28th October. CRUISE SHIPS AND THE VCC//
For many years members of our branch have been involved in taking their cars to farewell cruise ships during the six months tourist season, October to April. What we all do now has changed dramatically from when I first started some 14+ years ago. There were a handful of ships back then and we would be given a few ships to attend by simply turning up at the required time, dressed in deco gear and stand by our cars, it was all very casual. Now days with a season of 88 ships looming, drivers will be attending 62 of these vessels. We all go through a Port of Napier Security test (not as tough as it might sound) to obtain a Port Pass. No pass, no entry. The drivers meet outside the port area and convoy in to be parked, and then

interact with the passengers for two hours before the ship sails. We have the Twin City Stompers at each ship so it become a lovely party atmosphere, and we have been known to sing along with the band or dance with the visitors. It is very much about the visitors and giving them such a good send off treat they will want to visit again, which many do, and Napier is the only port that warmly welcomes and farewells its cruise ship visitors, and we are remembered for that. We are out there as ambassadors to Napier and the VCC in all weathers, as long as the cruise ship comes in, then the drivers are there. My job is to work closely with the Port throughout the season, on a voluntary basis, setting up a contact database and

spreadsheet marking off drivers non available days and putting together a suitable roster Next is to draw up a signing sheet of driver names attending each individual ship. With departure time changes, cancellations, drivers unable to attend and replacements needed, it means I must be available by cell phone 24/7 and checking the computer regularly every day. Out of season there is a debrief with my Port contact person and then the job of working out ships and car numbers we will do in the next season plus any changes or improvements that might help make thing flow even better. There are still a few misunderstandings on the VCC and Port of Napier partnership. The port uses the VCC like a bank by depositing a calculated amount which our treasurer then distributes to drivers per shifts done for petrol costs, so the club is not paying any money from their own funds. Nor are we, as I have sadly heard said “on a cushy little number.� If it were not for

these wonderful people, our club would not also receive a handsome goodwill donation from the Port of Napier each season, meaning all drivers are working for club gain. We are a dedicated group of 24 who love meeting people, love promoting Hawkes Bay, love our cars and love fun and through this the VCC has a very strong, longstanding relationship with the port, and as long as there are drivers keen to participate in this rewarding PR event, there is no reason why it will not continue for years to come.

NOTICE TO CLUB MEMBERS// Thank you to Wayne & Marie Evans for supplying apples for the Clubs April Kitchen Night. Very much appreciated.
- WITH THANKS As some of you will know I have been off work since early November 2018 battling a very bad cancer which was diagnosed in early September. After many tests and trips from Hamilton to Palmerston North I had Radio and Chemo treatment in Nov/Dec and a 13 hour operation in late January. After time in ICU and the Ward in Palmerston North I was flown to Hastings Hospital. After 10 days at home I had a serious bleed and after 2 operations in 2 days spent another 3 ½ weeks in ICU then the Ward in Hastings. I am home again and have had 3 trips to Palmerston in the last 3 weeks where I have had the feeding tube removed from my abdomen and had the “join” between what’s left of my oesophagus and my “new stomach”, which is a 5” tube slightly bigger in diameter than the oesophagus which lies under my lungs in my chest, stretched. I may require several more “stretches” as scar tissue forms and I have difficulty getting food down. There is no opportunity of returning to work as yet but I am nearly 30kg lighter! Enough of the gory details and the reason for writing. I would really like to thank all those from the Club who have been in contact with Sharon, Shona and I especially through the really tough times. We have appreciated it. Also my “private dieticians” at Hastings hospital for the visits and little notes I got each meal ( jelly and beef tea 3 times a day) and sometimes a wee surprise if one of them wasn’t shearing the Alpacas’ Very special thanks to Denis Churcher who gave up a week and stayed with me at Ozanam House while I was undergoing the Radio and Chemo treatment, Derek Gordon for the veges, Peter Carroll for the load of firewood and Trevor and Lyn Charman for the kindling. Also thanks to those that contributed to the “Everyday Hero Appeal” which raised $4500 for the Cancer Society and Ozanam House. I am now without the moustache I had worn for 46 years! HOOTERS// Ana @ Hooters Hi from Europe folks, So proud of Dad and the team for doing a fantastic job running the business whilst Phil and I headed back to Europe for an overdue catch up with some family and friends. We also managed to sneak in a few days of proper holiday and headed over to the Spanish F1 where we saw some great racing over the weekend from the Porsche boys and the Formula 2 & 3 races before Lewis Hamilton took Bottas on the first corner and proceeded to dominate right from the start. As a driver originally from my neck of the woods I was certainly happy to see him take the win. Although for me it was Mick Shumacher in the F2 race that was the driver of the weekend, not a winner but gave us plenty of entertainment as he went though the field. Phil has since returned and is currently ploughing his way through a months worth of paperwork whilst I’m still over in Europe for a little while yet. I’ll be heading back in July just in time to get those winter jobs sorted and get ready for the 2019-2020 season. The team has been kept busy in our absence with our winter multi-car convoys and daily tours, great to see so many tourists enjoying this quieter time of year.

Ewen from the Panel Surgery has been working hard on ‘Annie’ the Hupmobile project we are currently restoring and Steve D has been keeping the fleet going and working through the hundreds of other jobs on his winter list. It’s a never ending job! Next seasons bookings are building up and it looks like the team will be having another busy summer season. The cruise ships alone will certainly be keeping us on our toes, have you seen how many are visiting our Port this season?
