CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Steve Donovan
It has been a short year for me as Chairman with the last AGM delayed due to Covid-19 and Ian Elmsly covering the first six months. Thanks Ian. This year has gone fast with some very successful events. Sometimes, we had good turn out of members and other times the event organisers wondered why they bothered. Our Club Captain Trevor, has done a great job of getting guest speakers who have been interesting and informative at our monthly meetings. Monthly kitchens lead by Lesley and Malcolm Blair have gone well with very good turnout. Wednesday runs organised by Helen Ball have been well attended and organised by various members. A note of thanks to Helen for providing reports to Beaded Wheels over a number of years. Helen has decided to stand down from this role and we are now looking for a new scribe. Parts Shed has been a financial success this year with many parts donated and on sold to many happy punters, thanks to Brian Taylor and his willing crew. Thanks to John Durry for his monthly updates in The Mag. It appears to me that the Tuesday group enjoy their coffee and catch-up chat. Trevor Charman has been doing a great job of keeping the grounds mowed and plants tidy. Art Deco went well despite Art Deco Trust having to cancel their events. We were lucky as our own events were able to proceed and only really missing the Parade. Thanks to Steve Trott for the endless hours he put in

to get the veteran’s to attend. The feedback was great. A special thanks for the effort and time Julie Trott put in on your behalf organising the Art Deco registrations and sending out emails updating all the entrants. Thanks to Kay Elmsly in organising The Mag each month, which is not an easy task and sometimes little support by members in supplying run reports. Thanks to your committee who have made the past year work for you. This year highlights for me, was being able to coordinate our inaugural Swap Meet. It was a great success with amazing support by our members who gave up their valuable time on the day. We had fantastic support from the Speedway Club and Track Promoter Phillippa Jones. Mrs Gerber from Gala Catteries was amazing in providing all volunteers with chips and coffee free of charge, a marvellous gesture. I hope we have members willing to stand up at the AGM and be prepared to go on the Committee. Many of our current members are standing down as they have done their bit and we are looking for new members and new ideas. Thanks for the past six months, it has been once again a pleasure to be your Chairman.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Trevor Charman
Well another month gone already, I do hope that you are all prepared for the winter, it must be getting closer, although after some of the very warm days that we have had one would wonder. The guest speaker at our May meeting was Colin Lindsay from Gannet Beach Adventures, a most interesting night it was, as Colin spoke about his early days of starting work as an apprentice Motor Trimmer, being trained by my father and brother at Charman’s Motor Trimmers. Moving overseas for several years running his own business, then back to NZ and working for Beacham’s in Hastings, then getting involved with the Gannet Beach Adventures and ending up buying the business. Things were so much easier back then. Colin went on to speak about all of the issues that the business has had over the past few years. Certainly a credit to Colin and his wife Kim for keeping up the fight against bureaucracy to keep this most popular tourist adventure afloat through those very difficult years. A most interesting speaker. Many thanks Colin.
The club run for the month was a run through Fernhill, Twyford, Flaxmere, Bridge Pa, and to the southern boundary of Hastings to visit a collection of Vauxhall cars. This was a most impressive collection of 27 cars all under one roof and all in pristine condition. Many thanks for Barry for allowing the club to visit his shed. Afternoon tea was at the Property of Graham and Colleen Newrick, in the shelter of their garden, a very pleasant spot on such a perfect day. Many thanks to Colleen for baking scones with cream, and to Graham for showing his collections and his vehicles.

YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE TWILIGHT RALLY// On Saturday 8th May it was the CHB Branch Annual Twilight/Night Rally. Entrants were requested to be at The Tavistock Memorial in Waipukurau by 3.15 pm. We were unto them this time, as the year before last we had naturally assumed that the Memorial would be up by the Tavistock Hotel, but not so it is right at the other end of Ruatanawhia Street so lesson 1 find the correct start point. We duly assembled along with approx. 25 other cars including the only other entrants from HB Kevin and Pauline McGrath, there were meant to be a few others but Steve D judiciously decided to withdraw as he had to up at some ridiculous hour of the morning to get the Swap Meet underway. We set off in rapid succession including ex HB member Gavin and Viv Harris in their early 70’s Trimuph Spitfire who when I commented on their lack of a roof assured me it was going to be a top down evening only to be seen after the first stop putting up the canvas. Our first stop for soup and a bun was a bit of a surprise, we had travelled over some scenic byways to eventually end up at the Norsewood pub, it was a surprise because on Good Friday when we were travelling down to Wellington with one of our granddaughters we had stopped at Norsewood for a picnic morning tea and being Good Friday there was hardly even a leaf blowing up the main street, we had looked across to the pub and speculated

as to whether it was still operating. Well it certainly was, all lit up and welcoming us with a roaring fire and a delicious serving of pumpkin or vegetable soup. Darkness had descended while we were inside having a convivial time so it was a shorter run back to Waipukurau over pitch black country roads, we were following Mike and Eleanor Green in their mid 50’s Jag trusting hopefully that a local wouldn’t lead us astray a judicious decision I’m not sure but we did eventually arrive at our destination. Our final stop was for dinner at the Leopard Tavern, where Graham even had to pass on dessert as it was time to head home ready for an early start at the swap meet the next morning We would like to thank the CHB branch especially Bruce Poole and Ken Lyons for a great run, I know they struggle to get venues big enough for the crowd but we certainly all enjoyed the day. The next event you should have been at was the HBVCC Swap Meet Firstly I would like to thank Steve Donovan for spotting in 2019 the opportunity for the VCC to organise a swap meet, when the Hot Rod Club decided they were no longer going to run one as part of their weekend Hot Rod festival. Planning was well underway for the inaugural 2020 event when life was put on hold. So this year Steve was back into it again, he did an amazing job using his
organising skills and his connections to co-ordinate the planning with everyone from the speedway to the council and all speedbumps in between. The Speedway were supportive and good enough to offer the use of their pits and facilities which were ideal for the setup we needed and as they had an event on the previous evening, they also left out the event signage for us to make use of.

On the day it was just getting light when we headed down to find a lot of willing workers already kitted out in their H-Viz vests and rearing to go. Oops we missed the safety briefing sorry Kevin !!. I was on the gate with Juliette Cadwallader, our job was to collect entry money from the sellers and buyers, and what a great job we must have done as the event made a net profit of approx. $4500.00 not bad at all for the first one, patently must have been helped by us charming ladies one seller even commented when I said please. Steve had as his vision a good old fashioned swap meet and it filled the bill. Of the 50 odd sellers, I spoke to many well satisfied that they had done a lot more that earn back their entry fee and on the other hand there were many buyers strolling out the gate well satisfied with their new found treasurers. Also in the spirit of these events it was a great opportunity to catch up with old

WEDNESDAY RUN// By Helen Ball
DETECTIVES, DANGER AND THEATRICAL DRAMA The May Mid week run was full of theses as the occupants of the 20 cars participating retraced the steps of a secret assassin who was going to dispose of a visiting member of the Royal Family. Ladies disguised behind a moustache, hat and glasses, male passengers in hat and sunglasses navigated their drivers through a maze of roads and streets and trying ( in all cases unsuccessfully ) to solve a cryptic message. The run was brilliantly put together by John Cocking and LeeAnn Freeman and finished at Repertories Little Theatre where all was finally revealed in an entertaining way and the villain identified. Many thanks to the organisers for something a wee bit outside the square and loads of fun. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

SPARES NEWS// By John Durry
Hi All, the big news of the month was the successful swap meet we have just had, we learnt a lot from this first one, think the last one we did was at Hastings Racecourse 1992 or 1993. And we look forward to another one next year, 1st May 2022. We had a lot of comments from the stall holders saying they want to come back and it can only get bigger. The spares department which was also open had a successful morning, at times there was a real squeeze, but everyone commented how well it was set out and so tidy. We have a lot of people coming back to look for “treasures”. A couple of years ago we had a gentleman come to the spares looking for MG bits, and as time went on Paul Boylan was coming just about every week, he gave us some details of his restoration, his MG53TD, he then became a member and now drives and enjoys his restoration. This is the story in Paul’s own words of his restoration.
2016 after 6 years of working in the mines in Australia, I was contemplating retirement.... my wife & I sat in Auckland airport waiting for a flight to the UK. Unknown to her I was thumbing through the Classic car magazine I spotted a black, RHD 1953 MGTD, I thought it looked rather nice, pictures can be deceiving, so I bought it unseen and had it shipped from New York to Auckland. After a few months of nail biting as delivery was longer that I thought, 6 months later when it cleared customs, I hired a trailer & drove June 2021
to Auckland to collect it. To my surprise the car was green (pictures can be deceiving). After towing the car home I could see it was a runner but would never pass a WOF due to rotten frame timber & floor timber. Fortunately we had a large garage, this helped with the restoration. I removed the body from the chassis and all the steel panels to inspect the wooden frame and the main side rail timbers were rotten. I sourced the timber, English Ash, from Hutsons in the UK and still produce complete body tubs for the T
series. While waiting for the timber to arrive I stripped the black/green paint off the panels, using paint stripper, that when I found the original car was red. Fortunately there wasn’t much rust in the panels, where there was I cut it out and welded in new steel. I then etched primed each panel. Timber arrived and the task of building a new frame started. If you watch the Hutsons video on You Tube it only takes a couple of hours. Approximately 9 months later I finished assembling the body tubs. I then started on the chassis. I completely stripped the chassis and scrapped 65 years of oily crustaceans off it, steamed cleaned, sandblasted and painted it with 2 pack paint. Every component was stripped, springs, shock absorbers, steering rack, brake cylinders, master cylinders, nothing was left untouched, I also stripped the back axle and also fitted a crown wheel & pinion from an MGA which is 4.3-1, the original was 5.125-1. I then took to the engine, it had done 26,000 miles which I think was probarly right as the cylinder bores were all standard. I had the block bored plus 20 and the crank minus 10,000, overhauled the cylinder head, rebuilt the 1 1/4 SU carbs and put the engine back together. I made a frame to run the engine on the garage floor, to make sure the was no oil leeks before fitting it back into the chassis. I reassembled everything back on the car, I had a mission with the doors to make then fit properly, I them asked Tim from A M panel shop to look at the car and price to paint. I would strip the panels off the car for him to paint, a price was agreed on and 6 weeks later I had all the painted panels back
ready to fit, carefully fitting the tub, wings and bonnet wasn’t to bad, but fitting the doors was where patience prevailed, I would walk away and come back next day and it worked. The interior came from Hertitage upholstery in California, I fitted these my self, not bad for a first timer. The Dash was cut from mahogany plywood, I made 6 but wasn’t happy with the other 5, I fitted a new wiring loom, rebuild the starter & dynamo, fitted a new battery, and attached the battery terminals, fingers crossed there was no Lucas smoke and the engine started instantly, its first trip out was to VTNZ where compliance and a WOF were given, helps when you were a vehicle inspector. So far the car has traveled 300 miles, preforms like a classic MG should. Until next time.

We have pencilled motels in Whanganui for the three nights of the Whanganui Safari Rally. The nights of the 22nd, 23rd, 24th, of October 2021. Unfortunately the motels are not all together but only about 5 minutes apart on a direct route. Two on Somme Parade, the other motel on Heads Road. Our base motel will be the Riverview Motel on Somme Parade.

Depart 10.30 from VCC Hawke’s Bay Clubrooms 67 Sandy Rd, Meeanee, Napier Join our run to a local winery for a picnic lunch. Bring your picnic chairs and picnic lunch.
