CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Well here we are again, another month rolls by and by the time you read this MAG we will be past the shortest day of the year and heading for warmer months and longer days. (not that I am wishing life away!). To start off the serious stuff, let me thank you for your confidence to re-elect myself and the committee for another year to guide the club. There was a reasonable turnout for our AGM despite the terrible cold weather so thank you to those who braved the elements and attended. The following Sunday the annual Ladies Run was held and despite a turnout of 16 cars, there were only three “Club Eligible” vehicles being driven by ladies! What’s happening ladies? Here’s a challenge for next year, lets see if we can double the number of ladies driving “Club Eligible” cars. This opens up a whole lot of cars around the 1960-1980 period that I’m sure could turn out for the run and the ladies could show the men a thing or two with their driving skills!! Moving forward for the new year we have a few “major” events starting with Winter Deco in July where we will need cars for rides on the Saturday for an hour or two,

with the charity we are supporting this year being the St Johns Ambulance. A truly good cause that no doubt we have all used at some time over the years, so please lend a hand (and a car!) and then come for a run on the Sunday! There is the Daffodil Run for Cancer in August, again a very worthy cause and the Safari in October. As with all clubs, we struggle to attract new members for any number of reasons, but in the case of the VCC, our major challenge is for a younger age group to ensure we have a succession of enthusiasm coming through to keep the wide range of Historic Vehicles that make up the club, on the road. Our challenge again this year is to get new members and KEEP them by extending a big welcome to them when they do come along and try to make events & runs interesting and cost effective. So lets get into it for the next twelve months and see what we can achieve. In the meantime, safe & happy motoring (or is it maintenance time over the winter).
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
Even though the shortest day has now passed, we still have a few months before the days really start to warm up again. However the committee members are still beavering away organising future events. First up is the Winter Art Deco Auto Ramble and High tea on Sunday the 21st of July, refer elsewhere in the Mag for details, also note Lee-Anne Freemen is our guest speaker for the July Club Night talking about the business of Art Deco Attire. This will be a really interesting evening, we will have the club rooms all warm and toasty so come along. As part of Winter Art Deco, we will be offering car rides around lunchtime on Saturday 20th, this year we will be raising funds for the St Johns Ambulance Association, if you can offer a car please contact our beloved Chairman as he is co-ordinating this aspect of the weekend
Even further out, we are in the preliminary stages of planning a National Vintage only rally which will be held in September 2020, I am working with Rod McKenzie from CHB branch in planning this rally and we will share with Rally between the two areas. We have prepared preliminary budgets etc which will be presented at the next National AGM which is at Wesport in early August. Then with the way time fly’s at the moment, it’s not long after that until the Vero rally. The 17>22 January 2021 to be precise, it’s actually not that far away, so time to think seriously about attending as it’s virtually on our door step, and if you haven’t been to a big national rally before then this is your chance. I think the new shorter format will work well. So see you there. We have already booked our accommodation yeah!!!! COMING EVENTS:
Next is The VCC Day-Daffodil Rally for Cancer on Sunday the 25th of August, Malcolm and Lesley Blair are organising this event, with a bit of a different format this year it will be an interesting day well worth attending.

In September we are organising a shed/ restoration run, this will be followed in October by our annual Safari which this year is heading to Gisborne, we will be joining in with the Gisborne and other neighbouring branches for the weekend so look out for the entry form in this MAG.

LADIES DRIVER’S RUN RUN// By Pauline McGrath (Navigator)
Most of the week leading up to the run had been wet and windy, but Sunday dawned to a nice fine day.
Tom Parker fountain. It was a very pleasant walk looking out to Cape Kidnappers.
The meeting place was the Hawkes Bay Fishing club car park for a 1.30pm start. Approximately 18 cars gathered mostly club eligible, with 1 or 2 moderns. Lots of catching up with one another and then LeeAnne called us together for the run briefing.
The rest of the run took us through Napier South, Te Awa, Meeanee, Jervois Town, parts of Taradale and up Tironui Drive. Coming back down the view was fabulous on such a clear day.
Lee-Anne was the winner of last year’s Lady Driver’s run, therefore this year’s organiser. Only 4 ladies were driving, so the only ones eligible to win this competitive run. We set off following the instructions and answering questions. The first road that required “nerves of steel” was Main St. We accessed this street from Corunna Bay. This road is narrow with speed humps and a very sharp bend near the top, leading to a hard left into Spencer Road, then onto Napier Terrace. Our car stalled on the top of the left hand turn and required a Hand Brake start. We both commented we hadn’t done one of those since learning to drive many years ago. (thank goodness for automatics!!). Meandering across the hill, we then parked behind Ocean Spa. The next set of questions had to be answered by walking south along the beach walkway to make observations of the Pier, Sundial, Pania of the Reef and the

What a lovely city we live in.
Final stop was Hooters for a shared afternoon tea. The new premises in Wakefield St are looking very smart and so much larger. We had our afternoon tea, sitting amongst the great collection of hire and self-drive vehicles. Phil gave a short talk about the purpose of the three buildings – Hireage, David’s Toys and workshop. Even an Art Deco clothing room, so passengers can feel authentic, when they ride in the cars. This year’s winner was: Sandra Marsh and now next year’s organiser. Thankyou Lee-Anne, we really enjoyed the run. The instructions were very clear and interesting points to look for.

WEDNESDAY 6TH JUNE CLUB RUN// By Hel;en Ball Not the warmest of days but seven cars took to the countryside. We drove through Taradale and on out to Fern Hill then into Roys Hill Rd. Past Maraekakaho and veering left into Whakakpirau Rd taking us up to look across to the snow dusted mountains. Turning into Raukawa Rd and finally back along Roys Hill Rd to weave our way to the Puketapu Park for lunch. There had been a light shower on our travels, and John & Lee Anne in the open Austin would have suffered the most but hopefully they dried out by the lunch stop. Yes it was still a tad chilly, even the chooks didn’t make an appearance, but holding a hot cuppa warms you up in no time. The scenery is always stunning on this route, so thank you Derek for a fabulous day out.
