CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Well I’ll be buggered! How did I end up here? Firstly thanks to those members present at the AGM who elected me to the Chairmanship of the Branch (I think it’s a thank you at this stage!). Following once again in the footsteps of Steve Donovan I know that the Branch is in a good position from all angles and we look forward to continuing to provide something for our members. It was also pleasing to note some new faces stepping forward to serve on the Committee and equally pleasing that those who elected to step down are continuing in various roles around the Branch. On this note, it is important to mention the great service we have had from the outgoing committee members and Club Captain of Steve Trott, Esther Smith, Kevin McGrath and Trevor Charman. I know I speak on behalf of the whole club when saying that we have been very lucky to have had this group on and around the committee over a number of years and they have all been very committed members over the years. While they leave a big hole, I’m sure they will never be far from action or assistance when
required as we go forward. It is pleasing that we have had Paul Anderson and Alastair Chalmers step forward and I welcome them onto the committee. My first outing was to attend the Club Run on Sunday 13th, a practical lesson in straight-line navigation, so I was glad to be a passenger and have the luxury of watching the process from the back seat. An enjoyable run followed by afternoon tea at the Clubrooms, so well done to the organisers. As we go forward into another year with a new committee, if anyone has any ideas for runs or activities, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We welcome any input and the more the merrier. So that’s it from me. Yes a brief report, like my attendance for the next month. Stay tuned and we will see you at the Club.

This run will finish at the Hawke’s Bay Vintage Car Club grounds in Meeanee, for the prize giving and optional High Tea. On completion of the run, High Tea will be served at the Clubrooms. The High Tea is optional at a cost of $10 per person, children under 10 are free. Art Deco attire is encouraged, but not essential.

NAVIGATOR’S RUN// By Paul Eager
A leisurely 1.30pm Sunday start to what turned out to be a very pleasant and sunny Hawke’s Bay day as we gathered at Anderson Park to be given a briefing on the principals of straight-line navigation, silent check points, and other mysteries of route finding. About 14/15 “competitors” headed off on the first straight-line navigation section, albeit with one or two extra clues – the occasional road name on the notes, and a briefing note to stay our side of Church Road. At Church Road we changed to the section two instructions, straight forward as opposed to straight line, that took us to a cul-de-sac in Pandora where Graham Smith wanted us to drive forward exactly one rotation of the wheel – probably more easily done if you knew the tyred diameter of your wheel and could instantly calculate 2πr in your head. I couldn’t, and didn’t even remember the formula until too late. Further down the road, Kevin McGrath interrogated us on some map symbols, and then Pauline gave us our instructions for sections three and four. Three was using the type of symbols Kevin had tested us on, although he had put in a deliberate mistake to try and send everyone into the airport. The correct route took us through Bay View and along scenic Seafield Road back to Puketitiri Road. Section four then sent us along Puketapu Road, but with a catch – spotting “silent

check” signs along the roadside and noting the names on our score sheets. The five signs were car names, although some people were convinced there were in fact only three. Final destination was the club rooms, where almost everybody turned up eventually for afternoon tea and prize giving. ‘Almost’ because the consensus was that Hans and Mercia had been at the start but were missing at the finish – there was a rumour that their car was last seen outside the pub in Bay View…..…. First prize was won by Barrie and Lyndsay Browne in their Anglia - last to reach the clubrooms but with the best score, so there’s proof of a famous proverb. Second was Paul and Hilda Boylan in their MGTD, and third Paul and Carol Eager in their Rover 3500. And I gather Graham and Lyn Bowker should perhaps also have won a prize for Navigator’s Matrimonial Stress. So, the British cars won the day in every respect! All in all great fun overall and an excellent day – many thanks to the Smiths and the McGraths for all the work put in to organise it, because it was clearly a lot of effort.
MID WEEK RUN// By Allan Twort

Turning into Ohiti Rd then down Matapiro Rd twisting and turning through lovely scenery on a perfect sunny cloudless day. Some of the Fence Eneariums still had their colourful leaves.

The most objects remembered was 16 with a prize going to Helen Ball, chocolate bars went to others who participated. Thanks go to Ian (Dr Workman) and Margaret for organising a very pleasant day out.
After travelling through various back roads we ended up at Puketapu Domain for our lunch, stop. The after lunch quiz had the group observe 24 different items on a tray and once covered we had to

BRANCH NAME CHANGE: At the Branches AGM held on Wednesday the 9th June 2021 the following motion was passed. As explained at the meeting the ratification of the Branch name change is subject to the approval of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) Executive committee as per rule 14.10 of the “Clubs” constitution. This notice of motion was notified to members through its inclusion in the HBVCC-AGM booklet which was emailed to all members of the branch on the 19th of May 2021 by the branch Secretary The motion read as follows. That we change the name of the branch from the VINTAGE CAR CLUB OF NEW ZEALAND HAWKES BAY BRANCH (INCORPORATED) to the Hawkes Bay Vintage and Classic Car Club (Incorporated) The purpose of this motion is so that the name of the branch better represents the age of the vehicles that members and prospective members own and use The reasons being that: a) With the 30 year rule, the current upper age of vehicles eligible to join the VCC is 1991 b) The current name of the branch does not adequately reflect the age and description of vehicles that are club eligible and which many club members now own and bring out on our runs. c) There is anecdotal evidence that the current name inhibits/deters prospective members as firstly they are unaware that their vehicle could be eligible to join the VCC, and secondly that the connotation of the current name is itself a deterrent. d) There are still as many car enthusiasts as ever out there, the vehicles of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s which they are now buying, are 40>60 years old and would be viewed by their owners as classic and not fitting the common perception of a Vintage vehicle e) To cater for the diversity of vehicles. The club on both a National and branch level can continue to run specific events that are more suited to particular vehicle age bands or types such as the recent Veteran rally , Vintage only rally and Motorcycle rally f) For the reasons stated above a name change would provide a different perception of the club ie one that is open to later model vehicles and therefore could broaden the appeal of joining the club to a significantly wider group of vehicle enthusiasts Proposer: Esther Smith Seconder: Kevin McGrath At the AGM the voting results on this motion to change the name were as follows: For:

Our branch constitution rules require a 75% majority of those present for a motion such as this to pass, therefore the motion was passed The next step is for our Branch Secretary and Chairman to forward the name change to the National Office for Approval by the Executive, clearly explaining the Branches desire for this to happen as soon as possible

Hi All, it was good to see people we had met from the swap meet who said they would return, come to our spares, and some came more than once, I would say we will have more new members in the future. We have completed some of our 6 month plan and labeled all the heads we know what they were off, but we have 3 left which we don’t know what they are off, so if anyone can enlighten us please let me know, picture attached. This months restoration is from a member who comes every week to the Tuesday group, and the following is Wayne Richards obsession with small Fiats. Until next time.
WAYNE RICHARDS FIAT BAMBINA Back in May 2019, after lots of searching for a project, and as a lover of RAW power, I was lucky enough to purchase a partially restored 1965 Fiat Bambina. Luigi had been last registered in 2005 and passed through 2 owners both having done various jobs, but given up. With lots of work started on everything, except the engine which, luckily ran fine. All through the Covid lockdown I was able to work away and keep my sanity, and 15 months later, having never owned or driven a Bambina, I was pleasantly surprised. Its happy at 80kph and 100kph is pushing it. After 2000 kms it still hasn’t been to a petrol station, as I syphon the lawnmower for fuel. A couple of months back, a mate found an earlier model in Gisborne and after some negotiation I was able to purchase it. New floors, sills, front of body and lots of other bits, all being readily available, so here we go again.

THE CHANDLER MOTOR CAR COMPANY// A Brief History! The Chandler Motor Car Company was incorporated in January 1913, with Frederick C Chandler as President. The factory to be in Cleveland, Ohio. Frederick Chandler was a former designer for the Lozier Motor Company a top end luxury automobile manufacturer. ( Lozier succumbed to bankruptcy in February 1914 folding in 1918. ) Chandler concentrated on producing good quality motor cars within the price range to suit middle class Americans. Of all the initial employees (many ex Lozier), all but two had ties to the bicycle industry and all had laboured several years in the automobile trade. • 1913; Factory construction started in April. Car number 1 a Model 14 straight six was used for months as the factory runabout picking up parts for the purchasing department. Driven between Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania averaging 150 to 200 miles per day it soon had recorded 20,000 miles. By July 30th the factory had opened, and the Model 14 was selling for $1,785 fully equipped. In 1913 - 550 cars were produced and sold with orders for more piling up. • 1914-1916; Production focused on Touring Cars however there were three more body styles, Roadster, Four Passenger Coupe, and Limousine. Standard colours were a Blue Body with Black Wheels, Hood and Fenders. The 1915 Roadster broke the tradition with and Ivory / Cream version. At a stockholders meeting in February 1914 it was announced the company had a backlog of orders amounting to $2,500,000 ensuring that the factory would run at capacity until June 30th. In the 1914 Swedish Reliability Test a Chandler July 2021
travelled over 800 miles of storm wrecked roads that were deemed impassable. It was the only American made automobile to finish with out a breakdown. By May Chandler were shipping 60 cars per day and company shares were selling at $350.00 each. Chandler now being a $10 million company. • 1917-1918; War Years: Still producing five Models ranging from $1,395 to $2,695. Distributer orders for $30 million were signed, exclusive of foreign sales. In early 1918 Chandler contracted to the US Army to produce 10-ton Military Crawler Tractors, a $10 million contract. Tractors were built under the Holt patents who via the Best Tractor Company went onto to become the Caterpillar brand we know today. • 1919-1922; In February 1919 the Cleveland Automobile Company was formed to produce smaller and cheaper cars, this was headed by Chandler officials. They later fully merged to become Chandler-Cleveland Motors with Cleveland as a nameplate being dropped in the summer of 1926. Chandler continued with six body styles in 1920 increasing to seven styles with the two-seater roadster in 1921. In 1922 more colours were introduced, along with the Royal Dispatch model. Prices were reduced by up to $300 over the range. As the post war recession was a thing of the past Chandler decided to exhibit at the London Motor Car Show. • 1923-24; The year started with a lavish three day convention for distributors and dealers from across the nation, one special train alone bringing 70 representatives from Philadelphia.
The “Pikes Peak” engine was introduced after months of testing on Pikes Peak mountain. All 1923 cars would be powered by this engine billed as; “The Engine Built to Master a Mountain”. Chandler had Ralph Munford a renowned race car driver and engineer as their mountain testing driver. Late 1923 saw the promotion of the “Chandler Traffic Transmission” a constantmesh gearbox this was several years before General Motors offered the Synchro-Mesh. Chandler displayed eight models at the New York and Chicago Shows. The 1924 Adverts list 13 Model options all with ‘’Traffic Transmission”. • 1925-1926; Intensive promotion had Chandler saying they were ahead of their competition mechanically; with features such as, Balloon Tires, Traffic Transmission, Pikes Peak engine, Four-wheel brakes, cowl lights, Zerk pressure chassis lubrication, new headlights and carburettor all being noted. Nine models featured in 1925 Adverts. The new Vision and Ventilation windshield was introduced, the driver could now raise or lower the windshield a few inches with a central crank handle. ( old fashioned air conditioning ? ). A Chandler on September 7th, 1925 set a new record for the Pikes Peak hill climb. The Bowen ‘’One Shot” automatic chassis oiler was introduced in 1926. A step on a plunger at the driver’s left heel and your car was lubricated. • 1927; Now fully merged with Cleveland found them producing 26 different models on four different chassis. The company was struggling to maintain profitability. In January the new Royal Eight was introduced, an inline eight which produced 80 horsepower at 3,000 rpm and reported to do 75 miles per hour. The Royal Eight had five passenger styles.
As the 1927 model year ended Chandler was making many cars but no money. This was Chandlers peak manufacturing year with sales of 20,000 cars. • 1928; the line-up initially consisted of twenty-three body styles in three series; the Royal Eight, Big Six and new Royal Six. Prices ranged from $945.00 to $2,195.00. 1928 Ads show – Chandler the first American Car to offer Westinghouse Vacuum Brakes. By 1928 Chandler were shipping 15% of cars manufactured to foreign countries. Cars were being shipped to 103 countries. As the 1929 Model production started in August 1928 Chandler was barely staying solvent. The Model 65 De Luxe Sedan with all its opulence was sold for $995.00 and Chandler was running at a loss. The production of 26 Models many with Spanish hand buffed leather or Blue / Grey Mohair upholstery was the bring Chandler to an end. Fred C. Chandler being the astute businessman that he was, listened carefully when DuBois Young the President of the Hupp Motor Car Corporation made overtures to purchase Chandler. On Friday, November 22nd it was confirmed that Hupp had purchased Chandler. Hupp purchased Chandler for its factories and extensive dealer network.
