CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Welcome to 2020. Does not seem that long ago that we welcomed in the year 2000 with all the in trepidation that went with it. Thoughts of power supplies shutting down, computers failing and so on. Who would have thought that 20 years on things are still operating! So, lets ignore the doom merchants and get on with things. We hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year and that the old cars have been dusted off and are road ready for the year ahead. Planning is well advanced for the Art Deco Festival that is nearly upon us (it’s never to late to offer your services to help out even in a small way) and tickets as usual have sold quickly. This year again promises to be a great event an amazing chance for us to assist in showcasing the region and our Club. Things are moving back to normal and Steve Donovan was kind enough to organise a January Run for those still in town and looking to get out on the road. The Clubrooms are back in full swing with the Tuesday group enjoying some camaraderie and a cuppa (and likely please the other half by getting out from under their feet!!) and Club night kicks of on the 12th Feb. and Kitchen Night the 28th.

So let’s get on with things and give the year ahead a good nudge and have some fun! We are hopeful of getting some interesting guest speakers (fingers crossed) and some good runs for you all to enjoy. Remember if you have any good ideas for runs or outings etc do not hesitate to put them forward to your committee. That’s it from me, see you at Club Night.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
Well 2020 is here and I have decided that the club needs a mantra for this year and the mantra is all about exercise, no!! not for yourself for your cars, cars need exercise!!. If like me you have found that your clothes shrink when they are left hanging in the wardrobe, and combined with the old adage “use it or lose it” it’s the same for our vehicles, our cars need to be regularly aired and exercised to keep them running sweet and fit as a fiddle. This is no time for halfhearted new year’s resolutions why have these cars mouldering away in the garage hardly used, when so many opportunities abound to get them out and give them some exercise, show them off around town, let the kids see them being used, bring them along to the clubrooms on a Tuesday morning for a good tyre kicking session. We are lucky in Hawkes Bay that the area is so often a rally destination for all sorts of motoring groups, therefore older cars are accepted as part of the streetscape, people do really respond well to seeing them out and about. Throughout the year the VCC both nationally and at branch level, put on a wide variety of rallies and runs all advertised in Beaded Wheels or on the national website, many are organised by VCC branches just a couple of hours drive from home. So why not make it your mantra for the year to get out enjoy using your vehicles, give them regular exercise by attending the variety of local events the branch organises and also aim to partake in at least one event outside of Hawke’s Bay. If you haven’t previously attended events at other branches and are not sure how it all works, put the word out, we could get a group together.
On to other matters: By the time you read this article we will have had another “Steve’s Big Day Out” on Sunday January 19th we were unable to attend but it sounded interesting and would have been a great day out. There are a lot of events on in HB and it is not long now until Art deco Weekend the biggest of them all. We are winding up to our annual Art Deco rally, the format is tweaked slightly each year but we have it running pretty smoothly now. Volunteers are required for assisting with parking at various times from Thursday evening to Sunday morning, if you can help please give our parking co-coordinator Steve Donovan a call, or you might just get press ganged anyway. Volunteers are also needed elsewhere, if you can help on Saturday morning for the morning tea give me a call, and for the Sunday morning breakfast give Lesley and Malcolm Blair a call COMING EVENTS: Upcoming events are: • Wednesday 5th February –Mid week run meet at the club rooms and Committee night • Wednesday 12th February –Club Night • Thursday 20th>Sunday 23rd February – Art Deco Rally and Events • Friday 28th February –Kitchen Night Looking forward to seeing you all out and about exercising those cars !!

DANNEVIRKE & BEYOND 2020// By Paul Eager

Another longer run superbly organised by Steve and Pam Donovan started at Rooster’s Brew House before heading out on a scenic route via Flaxmere, Bridge Pa, Raureka and SH50 to Dannevirke. 14 cars, with classics just outnumbering moderns by 8 to 6, were seen off by new member Tony Wilson in his 1936 Singer Le Mans. There was a bit of drizzle en route specifically arranged to test old windscreen wipers, but that soon cleared away and generally the weather was glorious. First stop was Dannevirke Domain – a beautiful spot, shaded by the trees for those who wanted shade. Some participants (Lesley and Jude) had a bit of a fight with ducks wanting to share their lunch, but everyone enjoyed the weather and the break. On to our first visit, Owen Morgan and his daughter’s eclectic collection of stationary diesel and steam engines, toys, tools, chinaware… probably quicker to list what February 2020
he didn’t have there. From there we followed Steve in convoy up the wrong driveway, squeezed in a U turn in a farm yard at the end, and on to the next (correct) driveway to Allen Mill’s large collection (which has been previously visited by some in the club apparently). He and his sons have built up a tremendous stock of trucks (including the oldest road going Kenworth), motorbikes (one of his son’s) including a nitro powered Harley, loads of petrol bowsers, oil drums and cans (the other son, Justin, who showed us around), signs, industrial scales et al. All immaculately set out on display and including a replica of the first very small Harley factory in Milwaukee and a ‘smoko’ balcony with outside decking! 4pm-ish people started heading for home, some topping up with petrol and coffee at Dannevirke Wild Bean – thanks to Steve and Pam for another great day, with a total of about 200kms covered.
