CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Ian Elmsly
Well we are finally back in full swing and have successfully completed our first month since re-opening. The Tuesday morning’s have been well attended (so I’m told), and we were fortunate to have an excellent guest speaker at Club Night in Grant Marshall of the NZ Police who was very informative. Despite the weather, and thanks to the encouragement of Lee-Anne Freeman, we held a “Winter Deco” run, finishing at the Clubrooms for afternoon tea. Some 25 cars attended with a display in the Soundshell while a “Walk around” was completed followed by a run ending at the clubrooms for afternoon tea. Many thanks to those ladies who provided the lovely spread and had decorated the clubrooms. With the Club now back following Covid19, we do have the AGM being held on the 12th August, and as such this is my last report as Chairman, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee for their support and efforts over the past year and the club members in general for their contributions in a variety of ways. Without the efforts of members of course the club would struggle, and despite the challengers particularly during the first half of 2020, the HBVCC is in relatively good shape. We are indeed fortunate to have a number of very willing members who have put a lot of effort into the Club by being on the Committee and I thank them. Without these people we would not have the Club in the shape

it is. It is also important to acknowledge those members partners who have provided support as we spend the time and effort into running the club. Equally important are the sponsors whose support we have enjoyed, and in particular I would mention Hooters and Pest Control Specialists Ltd (Fast Track Finance) for their support particularly relating to Art Deco and of course Euro City Ltd whose sponsorship over the past four years has topped $20,000.00. The support of these entities has been tremendous so a big thank you. On top of these sponsors we have also been fortunate to have enjoyed “income” from the Cruise Boats group who have braved the elements to welcome and farewell our visitors as they tour our city, so thanks to Helen Ball for keeping this group afloat. We do of course have to ensure that we have continuing flow of volunteers to spread the load, and with the AGM it gives you all the chance to step up and offer to help. So there is your challenge. Don’t be shy, roll the sleeves up and put your hand up. So this is my last report from the Chair. It’s been an interesting ride and thank you all.
CLUB CAPTAIN// By Esther Smith
The branch is definitely back in action again and having our first Post Covid Kitchen night as well means we are firing on all cylinders so to speak. Our July Art Deco Run Sunday event went well. All those of little faith who did not believe Club Captains had special powers were shown up when after a few wet miserable days leading up to the day we woke to sunshine on the Sunday Morning, we had about 17 cars on the run which was disappointing as I have to put as much effort into organising it for a few cars as for a much bigger attendance, anyway those who did participate enjoyed the afternoon, I had always wanted to take people to the 1931 earthquake memorial and community grave in the old Park Island Cemetery and this time I finally included it. I think a lot of people are unaware it is there and from the comments I received afterwards that was the case, you can thank my dog walking excursions for that, Milly would be running around among the graves following rabbit trails while I got to read the history of those interred there. Anyway back to the run, we ended with a great afternoon tea at the clubrooms. The rooms looked a real picture, they had been set up and decorated by Pauline McGrath, Carolyn Anderson and Carol Eager who also managed the afternoon tea thanks to you all for your assistance and also to Barbi Speirs for lending her cake stands again this year.
August Run-Restoration Run Sunday 16th of August. This run is at Graham’s request he wanted a good old fashioned restoration run, where we go and see the work in progress rather than completed collections. We have some interesting restorations to visit, it’s amazing what a few of our members are quietly working away on in their garages so you will get an opportunity to see these vehicles at their nuts and bolts stages. We will finish at our place for afternoon tea, yes that’s right we are finally in our house and Graham can have his shed back with just under a month to sort himself out and make it presentable for visitors, no pressure !!! Refer elsewhere in the MAG for details of the run This is my final Club Captain’s report, you will hear a new voice next time and I am sure there will be some interesting runs ahead for us all to attend. See you all at the AGM Wednesday the 12th August.

OBITUARY FOR BRUCE CARRAD Bruce first got interested in vintage cars when he helped Ian Barber in 1963 as a marshal at a large event in Hawke's Bay run by the Vintage Car Club. Through Bruce's work the family transferred to Taupo in 1967 and Bruce became a foundation member of the Taupo Vintage Car Club. He bought a 1928 Austin 16/6 from Motuopa, a small settlement on the shores of Lake Taupo. His wife Alison towed him back to Taupo and he always maintained that she went round every corner at 100km/h. Alison, of course, strongly denies that! It wasn't long before the car was completely stripped and given a thorough overhaul, after which Bruce and Alison attended many rallies in the North Island. In 1970 Bruce and Alison moved back to Napier with the Austin and transferred to the Hawke's Bay vintage car club and participated in many runs and rallies with Alison at the wheel and Bruce navigating. Bruce was very exacting and the rally instructions had to be exactly correct or he would "have a chat" with the rally organisers! In 1978 Bruce, Barry Anderson and Barry Laye organised and ran the National Motor Cycle Rally in Hastings, after which the love of motor cycles took charge and the Austin was sold to Bob Swift in Hamilton. After a short period during which Bruce did not renew his VCC membership Bruce rejoined in 2000 and rekindled his interest in cars, owning a Vauxhall Velox, Morris 8 convertible, Cortina and Morris Minor convertible. He spent a huge amount of time restoring the Rolls Royce that the club owned, and continued to work tirelessly in the club Spares department. He was a fountain of knowledge for all spares and new exactly where everything was. Always ready to help anyone and answer any questions he was a keen member who will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Bruce passed away quietly on 7th February 2020 after a long illness.

AGM COMMITTEE & NOMINATIONS// MEMBERS As we now approach the AGM I feel it is appropriate to highlight the elected positions within our Club. The usual annual reaction when we mention the AGM is to either find something else to do on the night or keep your head down just in case you are deemed to be volunteering! These reactions are nothing new and are symptomatic of most clubs in NZ. However in reality, without a number of members putting their hands up, clubs will struggle and in some cases risk scaling back on activities or in the extreme, close down. We are certainly not in the latter position, but I would like to remind you all that each and every position is available, and even if some members offer themselves for re-election, you are more than welcome to also have your nomination put forward. It is a healthy position for a Club to have more volunteers than positions available. If you are tempted but don’t feel you want to “upset” a current incumbent, don’t be shy. Even have a chat to a current committee member and ask the question. As a club we should always welcome those who volunteer to get involved. So there’s my thoughts. Don’t be shy, there are a raft of things /positions that you could do. While nominations are called for prior to the AGM, nominations can also be presented on the night. Ian, Chairman.

We have pencilled a motel large enough to accommodate us all for the nights of, 23rd, 24th, 25th, of October 2020. As the drive to Taupo is not a very long run, the Saturday run will be of an equivalent distance. Sunday will be mainly a short radius of Taupo. At this stage we have evening meals organised for the Saturday and Sunday nights.
