CHAIRMAN’S REPORT// By Steve Donovan
On 20th March I had the pleasure of attending VCC National Executive meeting in Wellington. I found it very informative with most attendee’s having an opportunity to speak. The only negative was a no show by NZTA who was to be guest speaker. Many delegates made arrangements to stay over so they had time to listen to the presentation. It was embarrassing for President Dianne who had a number of conversations with them and had supplied some topics for them to speak to. Nothing was controversial so they had nothing to fear just a poor show by that government department. Some of the highlights that I remember as follows. We had reports from all the hard working Management team who put in many hours behind the seen on our behalf. There was a Parts Shed survey and the response was overwhelming that parts would not be catalogued. In it was a request to offer parts to other branch’s if they were being disposed over. Comment was that many parts are of an unknown origin.

There is a growing requirement for safety check list at Branch Runs and Activities. Changes to Incorporated Society act is making members more responsible for any accidents etc. (We have a very comprehensive Safety Plan for our Swap Meet. Hence a safety briefing at 6am on the Day) It is imperative we renew VIC after 10 years as this is a NZTA requirement. We had comments about the clean air act as it applies to imported vehicles after 2023. It really only applies to new vehicles and Vehicles over 40 years old and special vehicles are exempt. They agreed to scrap the member’s membership fee when changing branches. When a member changed Branch HQ deducted an amount from the existing Branch and paid the Branch the member was joining. ?? 26-50 year and 13-60 year badges have been awarded this Club year. There was discussion and presentation of a new VCC Logo and slogan which was well received. Slogan is VCC Driving our History. We should be getting copy of new logo soon and will be voted on at AGM in August.
Chairman’s Report Continued...
There has been a major upgrade of HQ computer system by some very willing volunteers. We were shown an outline of it and it is really up to date. One particular report took 4 hours to produce in the old system and now takes a minute. In the future Branch secretaries will have access to their Branch records which includes member’s information down to VIC Cards. Comment about Vero insurance. Vehicles valued over $100,000 do not get a discount. Vero Rally. Planning is going well and entry forms will be out soon. Branches will be receiving hard copy but they prefer you to register on line. Over 300 cars are expected to register following the survey questions.
Going forward we have our Swap Meet coming up on 9th May. There is a wanted page in this edition and we do need your help. Unfortunately some of our income stream is drying up and we need to have other avenues to help fund your club. I know many of you have put many hours into this Branch to make it the success it is today, but we still need a little help. Art Deco went well for us this year and the financial return may not be too bad, but who knows how long we can rely on it.
Report on Facebook. There are 3000 followers and a reminder it can be used to promote upcoming events. Planning for Daffodil Day / VCC National Day 22 August 2021 is well under way. Poster template will be supplied that can have local branch details. (As yet we do not have anybody willing to coordinate this event for our Branch. (North Island Club Captain Kaaren is working on it for us) That was some of the highlights for me and we can get more info when the minutes come out.

CLUB CAPTAIN// By Trevor Charman
Well another month has gone or slipped away and caught up with me, so my report will be fairly short. Our guest speaker for our March meeting was Adrianne Galvin the coordinator of the Napier Neighbourhood Support. The Neighbourhood Support group is made up of numerous volunteers in each suburb throughout towns and cities. They prefer each contact person to relay information to around twelve of their nearest neighbours. They have found that the smaller number works better and that those in the groups get to know each other better. The group aims are to promote safer communities, how to be better prepared for emergencies, getting to know your neighbours, developing a caring and secure environment especially for the elderly or isolated, create a common voice to solve issues such as noise, graffiti, traffic problems etc. The Napier group is one of the largest in NZ with an emailing list of 21,000. If you are on the list

you would have received info on Covid 19, the most recent flooding in Napier and the last earth quakes and tsunami warnings. Adrianne works from the Marewa Police station and has two volunteer helpers. They work very closely with the police, Civil defence, Fire department, Napier City Council, and the HB Regional Council. This was a most informative meeting. Our club run for the month was 30 miles around the Hastings boundary ending up at a very shady garden on the northern boundary of Hastings. Club run 18th April 2021. Visit the car collection owned by Kelvin Taylor. There will be an entry fee/donation of $5 p/p for to the Cystic Fibrosis Society Hawkes Bay. Assemble at the HBCVV Club rooms 67 Sandy Road at 10.15 am for a 10.30 am departure. HBVCC Safari Rally 2021. I am calling for expressions of interest for our Safari Rally, Labour weekend this year. We are planning to go to Whanganui and I have been having considerable difficulty securing accommodation. There is another large function in town at the same time. The government have taken over several motels and numerous motels are asking for substantial deposits before they will pencil in any accommodation. However, hopefully, I have secured sufficient units but the FINAL CUT OFF DATE for conformation and deposits to be paid, will be the 28th of June 2021. Yes a long way away from October but seems to be the sign of the times. We have a lot of other details to arrange yet but I will advertise Safari as soon as possible. SUNDAY CLUB RUN// By Marion Crocker
The monthly car club run on Sunday 14th March was notable for several reasons. The first was that the most represented marque on the run was Austin Healey, represented by a Sprite and a 100/4. Yes, the reason for the dominance of that stylish marque was not that there has been an explosion of Austin Healey numbers in the club, but that there were few cars on the run. The general consensus among those present was that quality was well represented. Another was the glorious Hawkes Bay day; not a cloud in the sky and not a breath of wind. We noted the great timing of the run. All but one vehicle missed the stop/go man at the road works on Omaranui Rd, that would have caused us considerable delays while the resealing of the road was in progress. The one vehicle that was delayed by making a comfort stop for petrol, wisely decided to forgo the instructions, and find an alternative route to the venue. Sunday drivers had not been allowed for in that road maintenance plan! The rest of the drive through the rural outskirts of Hastings was very pleasant. It is always interesting to see the expansion of horticulture in these areas, and to wonder how much the Covid closure will impact on this development. Our run took us finally to the garden, on Farmlet Rd, owned by Chris Dawson. Many club members will know Chris as a member of the Model A Club. The garden has been developed by Chris and the late John Purdie over the last forty years and is a testament to their hard work, and their skill and knowledge of plants and trees. On a hot day, as Sunday
was, it was a glorious peaceful green oasis. The many trees, a mixture of natives and exotics, are thickly underplanted with perennials. Chris assured us that the underplanting means that garden maintenance can be completed in less time; a quick whizz around the edges in the spring and the autumn and all is well. I’m not convinced that is the case.! The lush lawn was greatly admired and set of the planting well. It helps to have your own bore and not have problems with water restrictions. Chris told us that the gardens have been used many times for weddings, and that the brides have arrived in a number of unusual ways including by horse and carriage, vintage cars, by stock truck, and on one memorable occasion by helicopter. The garden, originally owned by John’s parents, once had four large glasshouses in which carnations were grown. These were picked twice a week and sent to Wellington on Newmans Bus.- a time warp memory. Eventually this very labour intensive enterprise was discontinued The years spent tending carnations may have contributed to the desire to have a garden more focussed on textural layers of foliage than of flowers. After a pleasant time socialising , we made our separate ways home, in time to watch the America Cup racing. Alas, in Auckland, as in Hawkes Bay, the beautiful blue cloudless skies , and the smooth sea revealed the sailors worst predicament; no wind. Sailing cancelled. At least our cars do not depend on wind power, although maybe in the future… Thanks to Lynn and Trevor for organising the run. 11

WEDNESDAY RUN// By Trixie and Bob Ackerley
» Marion ready to hand out chocolate prizes after the lunch break. It was a lovely Hawke’s Bay day and eight cars turned out for a very interesting club run with a different ABC quiz to fill out on the run. I found it rather hard to fill in on our bumpy car ride. On arrival at White Pine Bush we went for a lovely short walk in the native bush and appreciated the native plants, bushes and birds, before settling in the provided picnic benches for lunch. The sound of the bird gave way to the interruption every few minutes of noisy logging trucks and
the felling of trees from the forest over the road. There were two winners of the quiz and both driver and navigator were given choccies prizes. After lunch and chat time a few stayed to walk the longer loop, the rest leaving for home. An enjoyable day with good company and a very nice run to White Pine Bush. Thanks to the organisers, Marion & Peter for an enjoyable afternoon in the sun. 19
Volkswagen Looks Back At Starting Beetle Production 75 Years Ago
Gallery: VW Beetle production start What started as a “prestige project” of the National Socialists before World War II later became the Volkswagen Type 1, the production of which started on December 27, 1945, after the trusteeship over Volkswagenwerk GmbH was assumed by the British Military Government in June 1945. The company’s factory was largely destroyed during the war but an order from the British Military Government for 20,000 vehicles in August 1945 basically guaranteed the future of the facility. This is how the legendary Beetle was born. In a new press release, Volkswagen takes a look back at the birth of the Beetle 75 years ago. The world’s second bestselling automotive nameplate in history started its life in December 1945 when a total of 55 examples were manufactured before production was boosted in 1946 to approximately 1,000 units per month. That was not enough to fulfill the order quota initially but production was April 2021
hampered by raw material and energy supply bottlenecks. VW Beetle production startIng 1947, Volkswagen established a sales and after-sales service system and began to export the Beetle outside Germany, focussing mainly on sales to the general public. In 1949, the former Opel manager Heinz Nordhoff was appointed director of the manufacturing site with production increasing dramatically over the next decade. The one-millionth car came off the assembly line in 1955, 10 years after production of the civilian Type 1 started. The rest, as they say, is a history with the Beetle becoming the best-selling car around the globe for a long period of time until the Toyota Corolla took the crown. Volkswagen only discontinued production of the VW Beetle in Mexico in 2003, after 21,529,464 vehicles had been manufactured, including about 15.8 million in Germany.
Passing Lane - Dorothy (Dot) Harris Dot was the wife of Allan (Dizzy) Harris who is one of the HBVCC lifetime members. With her no-nonsense manner she was very much a part of the club, becoming an associate member in 1985. Her long membership was recognised by the VCC in 2020 when Dot was awarded a 35year membership badge. As a couple Dot and Dizzy were part of the first Art Deco Events in the early 90’s and continued that involvement alongside Diane and Geoff Quarry during subsequent years. They also were involved in organising numerous branch events including car displays, swap meets, Safaris, the early Art Deco weekends and many runs, and that is where our association comes about. Dizzy had restored a 1929 Chev tourer in the early 1980’s which they used and rallied extensively. One day in 2010, probably heading to the supermarket, I did some expensive shopping, as driving past the Harris residence in Havelock North I noticed their car outside with a For Sale sign on it. I got home and told Graham about this. We were keen to own a Vintage vehicle but had never considered an American car. However knowing the pedigree of this car quite quickly the deal was done and soon we were the proud owners of our first and only American car in a chiefly Roots Group stable. We have continued to use the car extensively as just in the last few
months we did a run through the back of Lochinver Station on “roads” that even an accompanying 4 wheel drive struggled with, then there was a 1000km road trip up and around the Coromandel and soon we are looking forward to participating in the inaugural Highland Fling. On behalf of the HBVCC branch I would like to pass on our condolences to Dizzy and acknowledge the contribution Dot made to the club - Esther Smith Two weeks ago while driving into the back blocks of the Coromandel Peninsular Esther received the sad news that Dot had died. I was stunned and fully expected the car to quietly coast to the side of the road, for we were in no less than the 1929 Chevy that Dot and Allan had restored and toured the length of New Zealand in for over 30 years. But no, the car continued on never missing a beat for the rest of the 1000 km trip. “Now you look after my beautiful car” Dot once told me while Allan said “Go out and have some fun” when we bought it. I hope we have done the former – we have certainly done the latter. Thank-you Dot and Allan – Graham Smith

Entries Close 30th April 2021 LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!! The CHB VCC Twilight/Night Rally starts at 3.15pm at “Pioneer Corner”, Tavistock Place, Waipukurau. The first car away will leave at 3.30pm. There will be a visit to a hotel for soup and buns during the event. Dinner and prize giving will be held at the end of the run in a licensed venue in Central Hawke’s Bay. You are advised to fuel up before the start. Please bring a torch.
Regulations for the Event:
1. Entrants must be current financial members of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand or guests of a financial member of the VCC. 2. The event is open to all vehicles as recognized by the club, which must be up to the club’s accepted standards regarding cleanliness, general and mechanical condition. The organiser may refuse to start any vehicle, which in his opinion fails to meet that standard. Modern non-competitive vehicles will be accepted as entries. 3. The rally organiser reserves the right to disqualify any entrant whose conduct in his opinion is likely to bring discredit to the event or to the club. The ruling regarding any matters in respect of the running of the event will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. 4. The New Zealand Road Code Rules must be obeyed at all times. 5. The organiser reserves the right to add supplementary regulations or instructions at any time during the running of the event. April 2021
SPARES NEWS// By John Durry Hi All Over the last 2 weeks the team have been hard at work and taken another item off our list and that was sorting out wheels & rims, these are now sorted out into sizes & dimensions and can be easily seen, saves having to pull everything out to see what you are looking for. Amongst the wheels we found a 13” Morris Tyre unused retread, could be good as a spare, (photo A). Hooters have down sized there shed and have no longer a requirement for some of the memorabilia that the club gave them from Awatoto site, so returned were the vulcanizing machine, 2 of the Tyre grooving machines, one » Photo A we will keep and we will sell the other (photo C). And also early engine tuneup machine, and a brake shoe riveting machine (foot operated) which we have also decided to sell (photo D).

Early Jeep steering shaft with worm gears, brand new (photo B), has anyone got an army Jeep? While we are on the subject of club memorabilia we were wondering if anyone new what happened to the club wheeling machine that was used in the panel beating classes provided at the Napier Boys High evening classes, if anyone knows what the deal was can you please let me know.
