Covid-19 Red Traffic Light Setting - Branch Rules As you will be aware, the Branch is obliged to follow the requirements of the Covid-19 Protection Framework. Under the Red Traffic Light setting this means some changes to the way we do things. Gatherings (which include most Branch activities) can go ahead but are limited to a maximum of 100 people if everyone has a My Vaccine Pass. (If vaccine passes are not used the limit is 25 people.)

At the March Branch meeting it was decided that everyone entering the Clubrooms or participating in any Branch activity must present a valid My Vaccine Pass. Masks are NOT required in the Clubrooms, nor do we need to be seated and separated for food and drink service. However, if you feel more comfortable doing so, please feel free to wear a mask and/or keep your distance from others. Please continue to scan in using the Covid-19 QR code or sign in manually whenever you visit the Clubrooms.

Chairman’s Message April 2022 Hi Members, Thanks to Keith & Linda Nunn for organizing the fill in or alternative run for our cancelled Festival Rally. It was a great run for all cars and finished off with a potluck tea at our clubrooms. Also, thanks for the Bar Shout from past Chairman, Greg Elder for his recent birthday. We warmly welcome to our club Winston Young and wife Teressa along with Peter Stevens. We look forward to seeing you all enjoying our club and what it offers. I along with Ken Youngson and Evan Henderson collected Ford Model A and Model T Parts & Engines from the Late Stan Katon’s at Mataura. There seemed to be plenty of saleable items to feed our coffers in due course. Our next club run will be the Frank Robson Run and Clearwater Capers being organized by Greg Elder on the 10th April, so get your vehicles ready and support these events. The stage 3 and final section of our upgrade of the clubrooms is at a standstill as we await our building experts to reprice the toilet upgrade so we can gather funding to continue availability of building supplies across the country may also delay progress. Club Captain’s Report April 2022 Keith and Linda Nunn’s Club Run on the 26th of February was a great success with 19 cars entered and many members staying at the Clubrooms for a pot luck tea afterwards. A big thank you to Keith and Linda for filling the gap from our cancelled Festival Rally. Covid passes were required for all participants with this being ticked off on the entrant sheet as people arrived. It was simple and worked well allowing us to hold such events with up to 100 people under the Covid red traffic light setting. At the March meeting a recommendation was put forward from the Executive that under Covid red we require all those who participate in events or attend meetings to show their Covid passes. The rationale for this is that if we continue without Covid passes we are restricted to 25 people and most of our meetings and events have more people attend than that. With Covid passes we can have 100 people. This was discussed at the meeting and a motion was passed that under Covid red we would require Covid passes to be shown at our events and meetings. March has been a quiet month for our branch due to the cancellation of our Swap Meet. On the 5th of March the Southland Branch held their Veteran Rally and this was attended by Paul & Lynne Herron in their Model T Ford, John & Katy Parish in their Napier and Bill Sheddan accompanied by Keith Nunn in Bill’s Saxon. It was an enjoyable day out starting from the Feldwick Gates then a roundabout route to Thornbury Vintage Machinery Club for lunch and on to Riverton for field tests before returning to the Southland Clubrooms for the prize-giving. Our next branch event is the Frank Robson & Clearwater Capers on Sunday April 10th. Greg Elder is organising these and it is advertised in the March & April Wipers. We depart from the Clubrooms at 1.30pm and there will be short and long routes. Bring your afternoon tea and something to sit on. The Night Trial is scheduled for Saturday the 7 th of May. Meet at the Clubrooms at 7.00pm. Please bring a plate for a shared supper after our excursions. You will need a torch and sharp eyes. John Parish 6

Haere mai – Welcome This month we welcome three new members. Peter Stevens came along to the March meeting, so a number of you will already have met him. He lives in Roxburgh and is obviously a man after my own heart as he owns two convertibles, a 1963 MGB and a 1989 Mazda Eunos/MX5 and another Post 80 vehicle in the shape of a 1985 Toyota Surf commercial. Our second and third new members are Winston and Teressa Young, also of Roxburgh. They have another convertible, a 1966 MG Midget, a 1975 Austin Maxi (a rare beast anywhere these days) and a 1991 Toyota Hilux utility. It looks as though there will be more competition for the Youngson (Most Rallied P80) Trophy and the Scobie Commercial Trophy next year! A very warm welcome to all three and we look forward to them joining us at meetings and, in due course, participating in our Runs and Rallies. The Editor 7

From the Editor’s Keyboard Wow! What can I say but “Thank you!” I have had a magnificent response to my pleas for more material so there is plenty for you to read this month and next. Don’t get too complacent though, as there have been no Runs in March and with just the Frank Robson Memorial Run and the Clearwater Caper in April the cupboard will rapidly become bare again! This month’s issue is bigger than usual as my report on the National Executive Meeting is fairly lengthy. There were many items that I felt were of interest to members and/or will require the Branch to respond. The Branch AGM is looming and nomination forms are included in this issue. There will also be spare copies at the Clubrooms if you don’t want to cut up your copy. The country may be a “Team of 5 million” but the “Branch Team” is much smaller and the many roles involved in running it seem to be repeatedly shared by a relatively small band of willing members. New blood is always welcome – and often brings unexpected benefits, both to the Branch and to the member. If you haven’t previously done so, think what you can do to help the Branch run smoothly and put your hand up. The main item this month is Greg Elder’s report on the Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring. Evan Henderson has contributed a short piece with photographs about the donated Model A and Model T parts and Marilyn Proctor has provided this month’s recipe. We also congratulate Branch Patron Neil McVicar on his 97th birthday and, thanks to Gerry Kennedy, acknowledge the passing of former Branch member Stuart Milne. Finally, Murray Proctor sent me a snippet some time ago about “carless days” that seems eerily appropriate with the fuel price uncertainty. I’m sure those of you who remember them will be hoping those times don’t return, although the 80kph limit does seem to be gaining popularity with NZTA! Happy reading! David North 8

Main Points from the National Executive Meeting held on Saturday 12th March 2022 The meeting was held by Zoom, which was a new experience for me and also for many of the other branch delegates. The official Minutes will come out in due course. This is my summary of what I felt were the main points of interest to Branch members, as a result not all of the Agenda items and Reports are represented below. Matters Arising from the Minutes of the previous meeting (August 2021) 1. “Special Interest Groups” is still a work in progress. 2. Vehicle valuations – if nobody in the branch is capable or willing to do this then a local professional valuer should be used. This will probably come at a cost, compared to a member doing it, which is usually free of charge. 3. It was suggested that the National Office should just email the online links for branch bulletins to the other branches, rather than pdf copies, to avoid clogging up branch email systems. 4. I pointed out a spelling error in Robin Dickson’s name and informed the meeting that the auctions had been postponed until the restrictions on numbers were eased sufficiently. Membership Status As some of the outstanding amounts were very small, it was agreed that “unfinancial” members would be re-instated if they paid any outstanding balance “before the end of next week”. Reports Secretary/Treasurer The Club’s finances are in good shape, partly due to the greatly reduced expenditure on travel for meetings (held by Zoom) and wages & salaries (due to staff changes and gaps between resignations and appointments). Subscriptions are holding steady but there are nearly 400 members on the verge of being declared unfinancial. The Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring looks likely to be more profitable than expected.

Office Systems (Murray Trounson) 1. The standard of VIC applications is still poor. Bad handwriting and incorrect completion of forms are the main problems but some have also been sent in without the required photographs! A training session for VIC signatories was mooted but Covid presents difficulties. 2. Long Service Award applications are now by self-declaration forms. All records have been consolidated and computerised and the National Office now processes all Long Service Awards. 3. Processing of VICs, Long Service Awards, Historic Racing Licences and Log Books is now more “electronic” rather than manual and much more efficient as a result. 4. Online payment of membership invoices was said to be working well. 5. Branch Secretaries should by now have received a link to access the new “Branch Portal” – see General Business below. 6. Each month the National Office sends branches address labels to use for addressing their bulletins. Recently I have noticed that the labels for new members are formatted with full names, i.e. “Mr John Peter Smith” rather than “Mr J Smith” as previously, and sometimes do not include Mr, Mrs, etc. No members have complained but I didn’t think this was acceptable and asked the National Office about this. I was told that this is how they are entered into the system. I wasn’t happy with this answer so emailed again and raised it at the meeting. The Club President agreed that it wasn’t good to have all the names on the labels. Murray Trounson didn’t understand my email/the problem but said he would look into it. Long Service Awards 50 Year Awards – 414 in total, 20 since the 2021 AGM 60 Year Awards – 66 in total, 7 since the 2021 AGM North Island Club Captain National Day 2022 is planned for Sunday 21st August. Branches can once again apply for a $300 subsidy to help with advertising costs. The chosen charity is again the Cancer Society. Branch Secretaries will be contacted. 15

Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 1. The Festival was deemed a huge success and returned a very pleasing surplus, thanks to careful budgeting, no traffic management expenses, committee members absorbing their own costs and more entries than were budgeted for. Some of the surplus was given back to entrants in the form of free shuttle buses each evening and free nibbles & ”bubbles” at some functions. 2. Fewer than 10 entrants withdrew because of the need for vaccine passes. They were refunded according to the entry conditions. One has since resigned as they could not get a full refund. 3. The artwork for the “pull up” blinds used for publicity at the Inglewood Street Party is available for branches to use. Notices of Motion Club and Branch Names This was to allow branches to adopt a name better reflecting the range of vehicles catered for. It was pointed out that there is no obstacle to branches adopting a “trading” or “promotional” name in addition to the registered name. The motion to adopt was not carried; that to withdraw was. Junior Membership This was to extend Joint Membership to include any member’s child or grandchild under the age of 22 and was aimed at encouraging younger members by means of a much cheaper subscription. It was pointed out that joint members do not receive Beaded Wheels or branch newsletters, whereas junior members do. It became apparent that Junior Membership was not widely known or understood and that it should be promoted more effectively. Branches can decide to waive some, or all, of the Branch Levy for these memberships to further reduce the cost. (See General Business below.) The motion to adopt was not carried; that to withdraw was. Changes to By Laws 1. This was to introduce definitions of “Heritage” and “Classic” vehicles to underpin the changing of branch names. With the clarification about “promotional” names it was decided to refer it back to the proposers. 16

2. There was a lot of discussion about “Vintage” in the Club name, with many delegates, including me, recounting tales of non-members saying “That’s not a vintage car” when faced with a Post-60 or Post-80 vehicle. The Club President told of contrary experiences with people saying that they owned a vintage car, which turned out to be from the 1960s. The discussion was wrapped up with the Club President citing the difficulty in getting agreement over a new logo and saying that getting agreement on a new name for the Club would be next to impossible. Hawke’s Bay Branch Name Change In view of the ability to use a “promotional” name it was decided to refer this back to the branch. General Business (Agenda items) Branch Portal 1. A video presentation gave the meeeting a quick run through of this. It will enable Branch Secretaries to see records of the branch members and their vehicles, including “suppressed” details. There is also a search function that works across all fields so, for example, a search for “Buick” will bring up all members with “Buick” in their name as well as every Buick vehicle in the branch. The database also includes “Inactive” members, such as those who have died or resigned, and these details will be kept “forever”. Branch Secretaries will be sent the video presentation in due course. 2. A discussion about “Suppressed” details followed. Some Branch Delegates (including me) reported difficulties with members who had opted to suppress their details without understanding the full ramifications of this. (One recounted an instance of a “suppressed” branch member who had organised a Run and could not understand why their contact details could not be published in the newsletter.) It was suggested that Branch Secretaries contact all suppressed members, explain “suppression” and confirm whether or not the member wished to rescind the suppression. (Members must contact the National Office themselves to do this.) Another suggestion was that, on the new database, contact details and vehicle details could be suppressed separately, so members could opt for one or the other, or both.

New Logo As branch delegates were simply passing on their branches’ instructions there was no discussion, just a vote. A handful of branches were not “present”, one Branch Delegate and the Club President abstained. There were 18 votes against and 17 votes for adopting the new logo, so the motion to adopt the new logo was lost. Online Membership Branch Secretaries should by now have received a link to the “dummy” system so they can try it out. Junior Membership Branches were asked to consider a reduction in their levy for junior members to make the first year fee $20 and to have a vote and email the National Office with the result. Bids for National Events 2023 National Motorcycle Rally - Southland Branch, February National Commercial Rally - Wanganui Branch, Labour Weekend National Veteran Rally - Auckland Branch, February National Vintage Rally - Wellington, February Bid needed from the South Island for the AGM. Nelson Branch indicated that they may bid for this. 2024 National Veteran Rally – Otago Branch, January AGM – Bay of Plenty Branch National Easter Rally – Nelson Branch (possibly) 2025 – nothing yet! Branches were urged to consider bidding for any events not already taken. Future International Rally Vero have indicated interest in continuing their sponsorship. Are any branches interested in taking it on? They would need an enthusiastic and capable Festival Director, availability of volunteers and helpers, a suitable venue and a suitable area for the Runs. In view of the success of this year’s Rally there was a lot of enthusiasm for another, in a similar format, especially the “free and easy” start times and minimal competitive element. 18

2022 AGM Auckland 12th & 13th August, Papakura probably. Zoom Meeting The President asked for feedback from the attendees. This was generally positive and my opinions echoed those of many delegates: I thought that it worked pretty well, although having attendees spread over two “pages” on the screen was a bit awkward and sitting at the computer from 9.30am to 4pm with a 10 minute morning break and a 30 minute break for lunch was quite hard going! It saved money (no travel or hotel expenses) and time (no need to travel to Wellington on the 11th and back on the 13th for me and many other attendees) but there was also no opportunity to meet members of the Management Committee and other delegates, or to discuss anything, whether covered in the meeting or branch matters during breaks. General Business – Other (raised from the “floor”) It was suggested that the minuted “Membership Report” should include a welcome to new members, rather than a statement that they had been “accepted” as members. I raised the question of “seated and distanced” if, like Gore, a branch had exclusive use of their Clubrooms at meeting time. It appears that most branches do not operate under a Club Licence so it didn’t apply generally. Branches were asked whether they wanted to revert to the system of each branch being sent a copy of each issue of Beaded Wheels. I asked why some of the branch newsletters on the VCC website were so out of date. The National Office has caught up on the backlog, the “missing” ones have not been received from the branches. Carless Days 30th July 1972: Carless days for motor vehicles were introduced to combat the second “oil shock” (reduced global oil supplies and increased fuel prices) of the 1970s. They did little to reduce petrol consumption and were scrapped in May 1980. Under the legislation, all private owners of petrol-driven motor vehicles were required to select a day of the week on which they would not use their car. A coloured sticker on the windscreen indicated the chosen day. Those caught on the roads on their designated day off could be fined. Other measures introduced to reduce petrol consumption included cutting the open-road speed limit from 100 to 80 kilometres per hour and restricting the hours during which service stations could sell petrol. Several factors contributed to the scheme’s ultimate failure. One centred on the issue of exemption - it was possible to apply for an ‘X sticker’ exemption if the vehicle was needed for urgent business. A black market for exemption stickers emerged, as did forgeries, making enforcement difficult. Households able to run two cars had a distinct advantage over others as they could choose different days for each vehicle. [Stolen from New Zealand Memories issue 14.] Murray Proctor 29

Stuart Milne (10/11/1939 – 03/03/2022)

Stuart, or Stu as he was known, was a member of the Gore VCC long before the South Otago Branch was formed. Many members travelled to Gore for our meetings in the Woolwich Street Nissen hut clubrooms. After the South Otago Branch was formed Stu and his wife Noeline were regular entrants at our Festival Rally over many years. Stu for many years was convenor of the Clutha Rally. Stu will be sadly missed by many fellow members from many branches of the VCC. To Noeline and family, our deepest sympathy goes out to you all at this sad time.

[Noeline tells me that the photo of Stuart and his Wolseley was taken on the day of the Clutha Rally 2020. She thinks that was his last Rally day. She also said that Stuart’s ashes were carried to a wee service at their local church in the Wolseley and that the family picture was taken at their Christmas Day gathering when all 23 of them managed to be together with their sons in Gore. She said Stuart always enjoyed those times. Ed.]

Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2022

Oil change for our Cadillac before the event

After a delay of 12 months due to Covid restrictions the above event was on so after a couple of days cleaning and servicing our 1917 Cadillac Tourer it was into its covered in trailer behind the Ford Ranger for the journey to New Plymouth.

Daphne and I left home early on Wednesday the 12 th January and stayed the night at the Irish Pub west of Kaikoura. Up early Thursday morning and a two hour drive to meet the ferry at Picton. After a rough crossing we made our way up to Palmerston North where we stayed with friends for two nights. On Saturday we motored over to New Plymouth and booked into the Auto Lodge Motor Inn which was to be our base for the following week. 32

Luckily as we arrived early, we were able to park our trailer next to our room which was ideal for securing our luggage and mountain bikes which we had also included for exploring the towns and forests in the area.

By Sunday evening the hotel park had filled up with a great assortment of different vehicles. Next door was John and Wendy Martin from Cromwell and Alistair and Nola Day from Timaru. So, lots of laughs over the event. Sunday, we attended the opening ceremony at the TSB Arena at 5.30 pm and collected our rally pack. There we met up with Gore members John and Katy Parish, Noel and Jeanette Kelly, Athol and Margaret Martyn. Monday morning our destination was Tikorangi which we had to be there by 11.30am. We took the long route of 86kms which had us motoring through lovely rolling countryside on very nicely sealed narrow country roads. The weather was perfect, and Mt Taranaki stood out in its splendour from all vantage points. Other than one fright with a big logging truck and trailer on a tight corner we arrived safely an hour later at the Clifton Rugby and Sports Club grounds for lunch. After admiring the 500 or so vehicles on display we motored back to New Plymouth via the long 43km route. Tuesday was the Competitive Day (optional event) which we did not enter so we spent the day exploring the coastline and city parks on our bikes. Wednesday our destination was Opunake via the long route of 60kms. After the two-hour lunch stop we continued around Mt Taranaki deviating 6kms up a lovely, sealed side road to a lookout at 902 metres overlooking the plains back towards Hawera. The Cadillac had to work hard in second 33

gear through the windy native bush road and then of course we had to come down slowly in the same gear to help braking!!! (What brakes?) Once safely down we continued around the mountain back to New Plymouth.

Thursday, we had the choice of two destination, as there had been overnight rain and the Whangamomono route was long and hilly I decided to do the shorter Stratford route while my passengers went shopping for the day before joining me at the street party held in Inglewood from 4-8pm. The main highway through the town was closed off and the 20 or so Veteran vehicles lead the parade of approximately 450. There was a huge turnout of people to view the vehicles on this very warm summer evening. It was then a straight run back on the main highway to our hotel. Friday’s destination was Hawera with the choice of four routes. We took the 129km one to the Tawhiti Museum which is acclaimed as one of the most innovative in the country. We had morning tea there and enjoyed two hours browsing around the display before heading to our lunch stop at Hawera. From there we headed back to base via side roads and State Highway 3, a journey of over 94kms. Friday night was the “Grand Finale” held at the TSB Arena. We caught the shuttle bus provided there and back. It was a great night with approximately 1,000 people there entertained by Shane Cortese and the Class of 58. Saturday was pack up time after a great week and perfect weather. After saying goodbye to friends, it was Cadillac into trailer. We parked it up at Egmont Village while we headed north to complete our biking adventure which got disrupted last August. 34

The next stop was Rotorua for two days where we enjoyed cycling in the Redwood Forest. We had planned on driving to Auckland to collect my MGPA motor and gearbox from our son Mark but because of growing concerns of the latest Covid outbreak Mark decided to bring it down to Rotorua for us where he could also enjoy mountain biking in the forest for the weekend as he is one of those extreme riders!!! (No, we are not.) Then it was on to Taupo for two days where we enjoyed riding to the Huka Falls and also the Tongariro River Trail at Turangi and the waterfront trail around Lake Taupo. From there it was back across the middle of the North Island to retrieve the trailer. We arrived to find a puncture that needed changing in the rain! We had an overnight stop in Stratford before spending two nights with friends in Levin. We tried to get an early sailing on the Interislander Ferry but were unsuccessful, so I spent a couple of hours at the Southward Motor Museum and then we found out the Ferry was delayed by two hours, so we drove into the centre of Wellington with the trailer in tow and luckily found a park. It was Saturday so we had a walk around the wharf area to fill in time. We were impressed with the developments. After a smooth sailing (thank goodness, said my navigator!!) it was on to Spring Creek just north of Blenheim where we stayed the night in a motel. Sunday morning on the road by 5.45am and after a big drive (874km) we arrived back in Riversdale 12 hours later. This ended a great trip after using lots of fuel, dodging road cones, surviving bumpy roads and receiving “thank you” blasts from the big rigs as we let them past. Happy Motoring. Greg Elder

Ford Model A and Model T Parts On Saturday March 12th Ken Youngson, Paul Herron, and I took a trip to the Katon's place at the south end of Mataura, where we loaded an assortment of Ford Model T and Model A parts into Paul's horse float, and one complete Model T engine and a few engine blocks onto my trailer.

We have unloaded the parts at the Gore Clubrooms for members to sort through. Many thanks to the Katon family for the donation of these parts. Evan Henderson

COOKERY CORNER Curried Chicken I was asked for this recipe after the February Club Run’s pot luck tea First boil the chicken in 4 to 5 cups of water with 2 tablespoons of chicken stock and 1 chopped onion When cooked, strain and keep the chicken and the liquid for use as stock Cut the chicken into pieces Cool the liquid and skim off the fat Curry Mixture 3 tablespoons butter 4 large onions (chopped) 4 teaspoons curry powder ¼ teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon ginger ½ cup flour 1 cup pineapple pieces 4 - 5 cups of chicken (I usually add all of the chicken that was cooked) Method Melt the butter, add the onions, cover and cook until tender but not brown Add curry powder, ginger and pepper Cook for 2-3 minutes more then stir in the flour Measure the chicken stock and add pineapple juice to make up to 4 cups Add to the curry mixture one cup at a time, boiling between additions. (I usually add mixed veges at this point but they aren’t essential) Simmer for 5 minutes, taste and adjust seasoning, adding salt and sugar if necessary Add pineapple and chicken, bring to the boil and remove from heat Serve! He has two Triumph Dolomites - NZ new, mostly rust free, registrations on hold. Becoming hard to find now. Also two others suitable for parts (will do a bulk deal).

WANTED We wish to purchase an older vehicle. Ideally we want a vehicle that is userfriendly, i.e. that will cruise at 95 – 100 kph as we will be using it for trips away (we live in Tauranga) and on daily trips out. Tauranga-Taupo for lunch and back is an example. We do not want a “show queen“ but something clean and tidy. Ideally it will be a coupe. It needs to be Registered and WOF. I am 73 and are past restoring vehicles but just want to drive and enjoy. I’m thinking a 1934 Chrysler, Dodge, De Soto, Plymouth coupe would be good. Possibly a Model A Ford but it would need to have period speed equipment and overdrive to attain the travel speed we need. 1932, ’33, ‘34 Fords and Chevys are probably more than we want to spend. I’m aware of a ’34 Plymouth Roadster for sale on Trademe which would be good but it’s a Roadster and we are both past being baked in the sun or getting wet and cold. Yes our request might be out of the ordinary but at our age we want to get a vehicle ASAP.
