Chairman's Message August 2021 Hullo Members. At the time this goes to print we will have had our Annual Dinner and Prize-giving. Many thanks to Des Brewster for organising this with of course due to the kitchen renovations requiring us to hold this event away from our clubrooms at the RSA function room. Congratulations to all the award winners. Thanks also to Rod Bell for stepping into the role of Vice Chairman while maintaining our finances in the Treasurer job and to Tim Walsh accepting a position on the Club Captain’s Committee. As many of you will be aware I am organising the sale of the late Robin Dickson collection. The first auction will be held at the end of September and will be of all the later model cars. These vehicles are to be moved as a fund-raiser for our branch from Pukerau to Waimumu Field Days site. If you are able to assist in either a car transporting trailer or helping in moving other treasures in order to gain access to other cars please contact myself on 0272104131. Many hands make light work and the Dickson family are generously donating to our branch for our assistance. As we slowly creep through winter our rally season nears closer and to start it off is the Opening Run to be held in September. Get your vehicles ready to start off with due enthusiasm. Remember we have guest speaker Jim Geddes attending the August meeting so we will be starting the meeting earlier at 7.30pm. Till then may your oil never spill and your spanner never slip. Answer to last month’s Brainteaser I left my campsite and hiked south for 3 miles. Then I turned east and hiked for 3 miles. I then turned north and hiked for 3 miles, at which time I came upon a bear inside my tent eating my food! What colour was the bear? Answer: White, since the only place you can do that is the North Pole and polar bears are the only kind of bears that live there. 4

Club Captain’s Report August 2021 The Annual Dinner and Prize-giving on Saturday the 17th of July was a great night out. The RSA put on an excellent meal and there was plenty of social discussion amongst the members that attended. A list of prize winners is given later in The Wiper. Thanks to Des for his organising and to all the members who came along and made it an enjoyable evening. The dates for next season’s events have been set and are listed in The Wiper. The first event is the Opening Run, on Sunday 12th of September and is being organised by the Cook family. Come along and show your support. I have had a request from the River Valley Lions for the Vintage Car Club to provide transport for Senior Citizens who live in Gore to an afternoon tea at the Gore Senior Citizens Club. They hope to provide a bit of reminiscence of the vehicles these seniors used to own or travel in. We are invited to join them for afternoon tea if we wish. They plan to hold this on the afternoon of the 11th of September. If you can provide a car for an hour on the afternoon of the 11th of September, please contact me on 208 5505 or let me know at the August meeting. John Parish

GETTING OLDER A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor's office. "Is it true," she wanted to know, "that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?" "'Yes, I'm afraid so,"' the doctor told her. From the Editor’s Keyboard Welcome to the first issue of The Wiper in the new Branch year. For those of you who have asked how the Editorial Toyota and Ferrari are going, the Toyota now has a new home with a VCC member in Christchurch. As for the Ferrari, it has been busy earning its keep and this issue contains the first part of an account of a month of classic car motoring events that we took part in earlier this year. Part 2 will appear next month. Other stories are from Junior Reporter of the Year, Ryder J Cook, who has done a photo essay on the End of Season Run, and John Tremaine, who tells us of his exploits on the Irishman’s Rally. Finally, the new Sheriff sets out his new rules – be sure to read them before the next meeting! You will also find the Branch Annual Accounts from the AGM, which should have been in last month’s issue (mea culpa), and a list of the Award Winners for 2020-21. Many of the awards were presented at the Annual Dinner and a report on that should appear next month. As I don’t want to have to fill next month’s issue with my own ramblings, or nothing but jokes and fillers, please get busy and send me something! Happy reading. David North

Editor’s Trophy 2020-21 Competition was stiff this year, with 18 members sending in a total of 43 eligible contributions. The WINNER (for the second year running) was Bill Sheddan with an amazing 19,176 words over 1,645 lines. Runner-up was Murray Proctor with 2,115 words over 225 lines. Honourable mention to John Parish with 1,844 words over 175 lines. Special awards this year: Junior Reporter of the Year to Ryder J Cook (1,049 words, 122 lines) and Youngest Contributor was Liam Welsh (6 years-old) Congratulations to you all and a big “Thank you” to everybody who sent me something as, without contributions, there would be very little to read! What We Did On Our Holidays 1 month, 2 people, 3 trips, and a 456 by David North (Part 1) A few people have asked how we are getting on with the Ferrari, do we use it much etc. The short answer is we are getting on with it very well, it’s a great cruising car and surprisingly good on twisty roads and (as of the 20th July) we have done about 11,000kms in it since picking it up last September. It saw some fairly concentrated use in April so this is about that. The first trip was the Autumn Colours Outing with David Mehrtens’ Mainland Classic outfit. This was the sixth time we have gone on this annual weekend trip to Arrowtown from Dunedin. Previous trips have been in our MX-5 and Peugeot 206CC (once each) and the Fiat 124 Spider Abarth (three times), so we decided to take the Ferrari this time, for a change! The weekend started on the evening of Friday 8th April with a “meet and greet” at an Italian restaurant in Dunedin as a chance to meet some of the other participants. The following day we were at Olveston House at 8am to collect route instructions, listen to a briefing, have a group photo and be flagged off by Lee Vandervis, a Dunedin City councillor, after he had addressed the assembled multitude of 47 cars and about 100 people.

The cars ranged from a 1929 Rolls-Royce (the same car and driver that took part in the South Island VCC Targa Time Trial in 2018) through Triumphs GT6, 2500 and Stag, Reliant Scimitar GTE, Mazda RX-7 and MX-5, Bentley Continental R, Lotus Elan +2, a Monaro GTS, bevies of MercedesBenz, BMWs and Porsches, a Ford GT40 replica, various Jaguars, three other Ferraris, a Peugeot 504 Wagon and a Rover 3 Litre up to the modern versions of the Mustang and Camaro. Our destination was Arrowtown, but the Autumn Colours Outing is an exercise in touring (and eating) so our first port of call, after about 70kms, was the Dunback Bowling Club for morning tea. The cars were parked up on the domain outside, but the wet weather meant few people came to admire them.

Next stop, lunch, was reached via Macraes Flat, Hyde, the Ida Valley, Ophir and thence to the Orchard Garden Café between Clyde and Alexandra, a mere 160kms. After a very enjoyable lunch we set off for a shorter (only 80kms) drive to Arrowtown through Cromwell, the Kawarau Gorge and along State Highway 6 to our destination. We had an overnight stay in Arrowtown and some time to look around on the Sunday morning while the cars were parked along the main street, attracting a lot of attention – but not as much as a cycle race. This was due to leave about an hour before us, but would be taking the same route. Oh! Undeterred, we set off at the appointed time to travel the 30kms to the Cardrona Hotel for lunch. And, yes, we caught up with the cycle race as we were going over the Crown Range. I much preferred the drive in the Ferrari to cycling up (or down) that road! 15

For many of the participants this was the end of the journey, but we were doing the Mainland Classic as well so, after lunch, we carried on to Wanaka where we were starting five days of motoring the following day. There were 45 cars and just over 90 drivers and crew this time, with a similarly eclectic mix of cars. The 1929 Rolls took part, as did a number of the other “classics” from the Autumn Colours, we were the only Ferrari, but there were Porsches and Mercedes-Benz aplenty, a VW Karmann Ghia convertible, Chevrolet Monza and a Chevrolet SSR – a new one on me too! The first day (Monday 12th) saw us heading for Queenstown, but via Haast and catching up with the cycle race again! Our first stop was after 65kms, at the Makarora Country Café for morning tea. Then it was off to Jackson Bay and Haast School, another 100kms away, where we were to have lunch while the (11) pupils, teachers and parents looked at the cars. Unfortunately we had “West Coat sunshine” pouring down, so only a brave or determined few braved the elements.

A small party of us then went on the Waitoto River Safari jet boat tour which was a very enjoyable, and informative, trip up and down the Waiatoto River with a driver/guide who was great value for money! This was a jet boat ride where the emphasis was on enjoying the ride and the scenery rather than being an adrenalin-fuelled thrill ride. After that we had a long (230kms) drive back through Wanaka, Cardrona and over the Crown Range to Queenstown, still in West Coast liquid sunshine, arriving at our hotel at 7.30pm. Luckily the next day was a light one, “just” 165kms to Te Anau, down State Highway 6 along Lake Wakatipu, the Devil’s Staircase, Athol (where Donna and I stopped off at the art gallery), onto State Highway 97, through Mossburn and on State Highway 94 to Lake Te Anau. There was a “Wild West” themed get-together that evening, followed by dinner. Wednesday was a “free” day in Te Anau. Most of the other participants were driving up to Milford for a boat cruise on the Sound but we had decided to do something different. This was a “mystery” flight on a float-plane with Wings and Water Te Anau from the lakefront. We had a one-hour flight over Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri, with a landing to explore a “secret” beach with a waterfall. Great fun and we paid a little extra to have a memento of the flight. The pilot filmed the whole thing on a Go-Pro, then edited the “footage” down to 20 minutes which we took away on a USB stick in the form of a model of the float plane. The footage was also uploaded to the company’s Facebook page!

Thursday saw us all back on the road again, heading down State Highway 99 (the Southern Scenic Route) for 100kms through Manapouri and Clifden 17

to our lunch stop at Tuatapere (the self-styled “Sausage Capital of New Zealand”). Lunch was at the Scenic Reserve and was catered by the local Lions Club – a barbecue featuring sausages (of course!) and venison plus salads and so on. During lunch the cars were parked up for public viewing. After lunch it was back on the Southern Scenic Route and 45 minutes later we arrived in Riverton. The route took us past the end of our street so we nipped home to swap suitcases before calling in at Te Hikoi (Riverton’s fantastic museum where I volunteer) and heading onwards to Invercargill. We had time to look at the new exhibition at He Waka Tuia, the temporary (they prefer “transitional”) space jointly operated by the Invercargill Public Art Gallery and the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, another interesting place to look around. The day ended with a drinks gathering at the Ascot Park Hotel after which the evening was our own – after 205kms of driving. The next day was another free day and Donna and I took the opportunity to have a look round Invercargill. We spent an hour talking to a lovely couple who were fascinated by our adventures on the trip and then went our separate ways. Donna headed off to the Op Shops and a hairdresser while I went to Classic Motorcycle Mecca to look at the George Begg racing cars exhibition. That evening was the Tour Dinner at Bill Richardson’s Transport World. The theme was “Bonds, Bond Girls & Villains”. We played it safe, I wore a dark suit, white shirt and black bow tie, while Donna went for a terrific Bond Girl “glam in a long dress” look. There was surprise entertainment too, a very good magician called Jonathan Usher, based in Dunedin. After a very enjoyable dinner, it was back to “normality” on Saturday as we assembled for morning tea (at 9.30am!) at the Ascot Park before setting off an hour later on a 340km journey through the Catlins to Dunedin, via Stirling Point and Bluff. We had an excellent lunch at the Whistling Frog Café at Papatowai but unfortunately didn’t have time to stop at the Lost Gypsy Gallery – an amazing collection of automata in a house bus. The route then took us out to Kaka Point before getting back on the “direct” route up to Balclutha and our final destination, the Dunedin Railway Station and then our hotel. The event finished with an informal dinner in Dunedin. Sunday (18th) saw us driving home via Gore and looking forward to four days at home before our next trip, having covered 2,133 kms on this one! 18

Clubrooms Renovations Over the last few months I have been observing the progress on our renovations. A big thank you must go to Ken Youngson and Ray Harvey, with helper Murray Proctor. The outside of the clubrooms is looking very impressive and the window sills have taken the plainness off a rather plain wall and are waiting for a bit of fine weather for roughcast. Progress on the interior is also taking place, wall lining and ceiling all underway. The crew have been busy lifting the vinyl flooring and at the time of writing are waiting for the new vinyl. The joinery is all ordered and I believe underway. A big thank you must go to all for their time and effort, not just on the work on the clubrooms but what goes on behind the scenes and a lot of bartering. And also they have been busy in the workshop and the new rolla-door has been installed and I must say looks very impressive. The crew from Eastern Concrete have started the boxing for pathways in front of the kitchen and toilets. So things are progressing very well and when all is finished we will have a very impressive kitchen to work in. Keep the good work up guys. The time and work is very much appreciated. Gerry Kennedy

Getting Older An older gentleman was on the operating table awaiting surgery and he insisted that his son, a renowned surgeon, perform the operation. As he was about to get the anaesthesia, he asked to speak to his son. "Yes, Dad, what is it?" "Don't be nervous, son; do your best, and just remember, if it doesn't go well, if something happens to me, your mother is going to come and live with you and your wife...." End of Season Run Saturday 5 June Woke up this morning with a great view from my window.

We decided to take Dad’s Commodore because the Wolseley is still in bits.

At 11:57am we left our house in Edendale and headed to Gore. In Gore, we cheated and used the car wash (because Dad didn’t want to make our driveway any messier. We arrived at VCC headquarters at 12:45pm, where I counted 13 cars.

After getting our briefing we were off. It was a scavenger hunt rally including activities for kids which made it harder for Dad because I was his navigator and he kept calling me his distracted navigator because I was more interested in the word search than the scavenger hunt. We drove all around Gore and we had to collect four items:

We arrived back at HQ at 2:40pm.

We cheated a little because we did the Run first and collected the items around the grounds of the VCC. Everyone brought their own afternoon tea and sat around the tables chatting. I scored a piece of caramel slice for participating in the children’s section, it was yummy.

I really enjoyed myself and rate it 9 out of 10. Dad rates it 9 out of 10, unless we win a prize.

Irishman's Rally 2021 On the Friday of Queen's Birthday weekend my son Richard and I packed the Model A Coupe with all the gear required for the weekend (fire extinguisher, chains, rope ready tied on the front bumper for any mishaps) all part of your entry. Departed home at 4 p.m. to go to Alexandra which was the starting point on Saturday morning. Saturday was warm for a 7.30 a.m. start. Collected lunch packs and instructions which numbered 89 so plenty to keep your eye on. Departed Alexandra onto Galloway Road to Crawford Hills Road then Manorburn Road. Sunrise was very colourful as daylight broke. A real nice morning at this stage. Onto Old Dunstan Road, Moa Creek Road then Blackstone Hills Run Road onto State Highway 85 then left onto St Bathans Down Road, right onto Loop Road then through St Bathans. A lovely sunny day now. Left onto SH85 to Wedderburn Maniototo Station Road then back to Ranfurly for petrol. The petrol station was very busy with cars and bikes on their way to the Brass Monkey Rally - the last one to be held. We left Ranfurly heading towards Palmerston, left onto Channel Road towards Danseys Pass Road. The hotel was a popular stop for bikes and cars, now on Danseys Pass Road climbing very steadily to the top of the pass with many motor bikes coming towards us all the way over the pass. Through Duntroon then left towards Kurow for more fuel then over the bridge to Haka Valley Road. Left there for a few miles and onto Meyers Pass Road - a gentle climb up and over the top then down to Serpentine Valley Road to Waiho Forks then left towards Waimate then Parkers Bush Road and onto Black Line Road which we stayed on for many miles heading for Fairlie on back country roads, Cricklewood Road then left onto the main road to Fairlie. We had tea at the pub then went to our accommodation for the night. We arrived in Fairlie about 6.30p.m. A long day but very enjoyable. Sunday morning was overcast and light rain in Fairlie, we collected our instructions at 8 a.m. ready to go. Left Fairlie heading to Burkes Pass then onto Dog Kennel Corner and turned onto Haldon Road, a long drive to Haldon Station, veered left over Stoney Creek, turned left onto Teaka Road and continued on this road. The road climbed very high and when at the top we had a great view of Benmore dam through gaps in clouds. This road was very rough in places as heavy rain the week before had scoured out many 36

holes in the surface. It was a long drop down to the lake then on to Benmore Dam. We crossed the dam to Otematata then onto Omarama where more fuel was required. We then turned right towards Twizel then into Ahuriri Heights 2.5kms from Omarama which was our lunch stop and field tests. Soup and lunch packs were put together by school pupils - every lunch had the child’s name who packed it. There was a speed test for those who wished to try their cars out around a marked track. Later that day we made our way to Fairlie Town Hall for the prize giving and a finger tea. Around 150 cars participated in this very wellrun rally - enjoyed by all participants. Thanks to the organisers for a great weekend and I am sure I will be back. (840 miles for weekend!) John Tremaine

There’s a new Sheriff in Town! Well, howdy pardners. Welcome to the Gore Vintage Car Club. There are a few new ordinances as you enter the club rooms for socialising, chewing the fat, and generally talking bull dust. By all means, participate in them-there carrying-ons, but be warned, any shenanigans reported to the Sheriff prior to, upon, or even after, your arrival may result in some mild bantering, embarrassment or good old-fashioned leg pulling whilst we attempt to increase the coffers of the Branch. The new ordinances, as a reminder to those who attended the most recent Branch Meeting or new info for those who weren’t there. The Sheriff’s ruling is final, and no correspondence will be entered into and there is no higher court to appeal to! Fines are $2!! Have a coin in your pocket, just in case. (Mr Perfect may find he is not so perfect.) Name badges are to be worn! Newer members have several names to learn and try to remember. Longer standing members have one or two names to learn. Thanks for helping each other out, and any visiting individuals we may have. Name badges are to be worn on the right breast, or right side of the chest. When we greet someone and shake their hand we shake with the right hand, the eye is then drawn to the face, passing the name badge on the way, thus reinforcing the name of the individual being greeted. Remember this activity is meant to be light-hearted and in jest. A humorous way to help keep us in good spirits and a little more financial. Drop your mate in the deep end! Sources will not be revealed but lack of scuttlebutt may result in the imagination of the Sheriff running rampant! We need to cater for about 30 to 40 members each night. The cuppa and serving of the supper is to be arranged within the Social Committee. If necessary, ingredients and/or small items can be bought at Gore New World and charged to the Gore VCC account.

COOKERY CORNER Lemon Weetbix Square Ingredients for the square 185 grams butter 1 cup sugar 3 crushed Weetbix 1 cup plain flour 1 cup coconut 1 teaspoon baking powder Method Melt butter in microwave-proof bowl and add sugar Mix together, add dry ingredients and mix well Press into lined baking tray Bake for 15-20 minutes ONLY at 180ºC Lemon Icing 2 cups icing sugar 1 lemon and zest 50 grams butter Melt butter and add lemon juice, zest and icing sugar Ice while warm and cut when cold I have made this with orange juice and zest and it just as nice Marilyn Proctor

Hi David, I came across this and thought it was interesting. Nav-O-Magic. It’s fitted to a 1948 Ford Super Deluxe Tudor Sedan. It looks like the old Viewmaster we had as kids. It must have created a magnificent blind spot. Murray Proctor
