Chairman's Report January 2020 Well I hope all members have had a great Xmas with family and friends. 2019 was certainly a busy year with social events along with Rallies and Runs. I trust you all have your vehicles motoring well for another busy year of events in 2020. I certainly enjoyed the sealed hillclimb in my Escort Sport. A big “thank you” to Evan Henderson and crew for organising the event along with the lovely weather. Busy in the shed getting race cars ready for the three classic race meetings in the South Island coming up in February. Also have the 66th Veteran Dunedin to Brighton Rally on the 18th – 19th January so will take my Cadillac along. Remember to get your entries in for our Festival Rally. This is always a fantastic event and we have some of the best roads in the country to enjoy in our vehicles. Denis and crew put a lot of work into running this event. See you there. Club Captain’s Report January 2020 We had a good turnout to the Christmas Run on the 8th of December with 15 cars and 35 people attending. The weather was not the best but we managed to work between the periods of rain and nobody got wet. We enjoyed a typical Southland style BBQ cooked in the workshop with the doors open. There was plenty of talking and eating and I finally locked up the clubrooms at about 8pm. See a full report later in The Wiper. Our next run is a picnic run on the 18th of January to a mystery location not more than 100 km away. Rod Bell is organising this run and the details are given later in The Wiper. This is a non-competitive run and, as Rod put it at the December meeting, this is an opportunity to go for a cruise in your car. Fingers crossed for decent weather and come along for a social day out. The date has been set for the Diggers Run with the RSA and this will be on the 8th of February going to Tapanui via Crookston. We will be looking for names of members who can provide cars for this run at the next meeting. If you are not going to be at the January meeting and can provide a car for the Diggers Run please ring either Charlie Davis (03 204 8848) or Ray Taylor (027 696 2965) and get your name on the list. From the Editor’s keyboard A big “Thank You” to Barry Lawrence, who supplied the front cover photo of the late Lester Marsh’s Land Rover doing what Land Rovers were born to do “on top of Whitcomb during the Cronin Anniversary trip 75 years later, in 2009”. Barry offered the photo to go with Lester’s obituary last month but New Zealand Post had other ideas! Following on from the “films to look out for” in last month’s edition, Donna and I went to see “Ford v Ferrari” recently. Although “based on a true story”, it is not a documentary. The racing “action” suffers from some rather annoying “Hollywood” clichés and the storyline glosses over some important (but not very cinematic) parts of actual history but, despite that, we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Go and see it if you get a chance! I wish you all a happy, prosperous and, above all, safe and healthy 2020. David North

Blonde Goes to the Movies We went to see a movie the other night. I sat in an aisle seat as I usually do because it feels a little roomier. Just as the feature was about to start, a blonde from the centre of the row got up and started working her way out. “Excuse me, sorry, oops, excuse me, pardon me, gotta hurry, oops, excuse me.” By the time she got to me, I was trying to look around her and I was a little impatient, so I said, “Couldn’t you have done this a little earlier?” “No!” she said in a loud whisper. “The ‘TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE PLEASE’ message just flashed up on the screen and mine is in the car.” Sent in by Janet Brewster 7

Taieri Tour, 2nd November 2019 It was probably in the mid-70s when I last attended a Taieri Tour Rally so it was well overdue. Also a major reason to attend this year was that my father was being awarded his 50-year membership badge at the prize giving. The Tour started from a community hall in Mosgiel on a fine Saturday morning. There were approximately 47 entries covering all classes, however only one motorcycle. We set off on the Rally having been informed that the navigator was going to be busy with not only instructing me as to the directions but also having to keep an eye out for lettered signs to note down around the run as well as having cryptic instructions every now and then. Lynne and I decided to do the short run of approximately 50 miles. Some of the entrants struggled with certain directions and although we overshot the odd intersection and questioned ourselves a few times we managed to complete the course. I was a little disappointed with having to drive on gravel roads. The course set out towards Outram and then through the dairy farm flats of Momona with some acute turns that threw a few off course, eventually returning to Outram for field tests and lunch. Of course there was the usual entrant voting to complete before returning to our digs. The prize-giving-was held at the Otago VCC Clubrooms with Michael Lavender from the National VCC Management Committee presenting the Rally awards and the two 50-year membership awards - to Ivan Bennet and Bob Herron. It was a great evening and pleasing to see my father being awarded his 50th considering it has been a large part of his life and mine. It was also great that Lynne and I won 2nd overall veteran and overall rally time trial. [Well done both of you. The Editor] Paul Herron

Tuesday Ramble 26th November 2019 We left the Clubrooms on a fine day, heading out towards Lumsden. We turned off at Mandeville up past Mary and John Tremaine’s place and came out at Kingston Crossing corner south of Balfour. Then on up to Lumsden for lunch at the Lumsden Hotel. A good meal was had and then the Team Leader (AKA Gerry Kennedy) announced that Garry would write this report – “Thank you Team Leader!”

From the hotel we went across the road to the old Masonic Hall to see Steve and Kelly Taylor who own and run ROAR Coffee. They have converted the Hall into a very individual home, incorporating a tattoo parlour as well as the coffee roasting business. Steve told us how it had all came about and we were left to explore the house – and, in some cases, buy some freshly-ground coffee.

Then it was time to head home, and the Team Leader’s car did not want to start!! A little tinkering under the bonnet and away he went. We turned left south of Lumsden and came down the Longridge Road to Balfour where ice creams were had. Then on through town, past the old school and around the block past the old lime works to Kingston Crossing corner and home through Riversdale. A good day had by all. Thank you Team Leader! Christmas Lunch 5th December 2019 After some confusion over the Christmas lunch it was cancelled as a Branch function but individuals decided to run it instead. We try and support a different venue each year and this year it was held at the Gore Racecourse, with catering by Food Affair. We had a lovely meal, a great selection of salads and roast veges with roast beef and ham on the bone. This was followed with a great range of desserts. It was much appreciated that David North supplied soft drinks and sweets on the table. (It was supposed to be an anonymous donation! DN) This capped off a great day.

Christmas Run Sunday 8th December 2019 For this year’s Christmas Run I had hoped to visit Stewart Quertier’s shed and Terry Inder’s shed but, when I finally managed to track Terry down, he had another important engagement on for the 8th of December. Plan B was to substitute a visit to our sheds instead and offer the ladies a wander round our garden. The weather played ball, just, with rain and hail as we assembled at the Clubrooms, fine while we visited our place, then rain again as we drove to Stewart Quertier’s. When we were inside at Stewart’s it pelted down with hail and then cleared until we got back to the Clubrooms. Both visits provided a mix of vehicles people had seen before and a few that were new and a few that were projects in progress or yet to be started. Thanks to Stewart for allowing us to visit his sheds. He has a great setup with vehicles well displayed and a separate workshop where he is restoring a pair of Ford Coupes. It certainly looks like he spends a lot of time out there and the quality of the restoration work is first class.

When the 15 cars on the Run got back to the Clubrooms the volunteers swung into action. Thanks to Keith and Starr for help with the BBQs, Murray for manning the Bar and, in the kitchen, Frances and Bryan Neilson, Russell and Marlene Newland and Marilyn Proctor. Katy ran a 16
Christmas quiz while the BBQ was cooking and this year’s winners were Ken and Jill Youngson. The prize for the best decorated car went to Evan Henderson and Rhonda Wilson who not only decorated their car but dressed for the occasion as well. [Congratulations to you all! The Editor]

Nurses... Nurses have to speed. They have places to be & people to see!!! YOU HAVE TO LOVE A GOOD NURSE‌. A policeman was rushed to the hospital with an inflamed appendix. The doctors operated and advised him that all was well; however, the policeman kept feeling something pulling at his pubic hairs. Worried that it might have been a second surgery and the doctors hadn't told him about it, he finally got enough energy to pull his hospital gown up enough so he could look at what was making him so uncomfortable. Taped firmly across his pubic hair and private parts were three wide strips of adhesive tape, the kind that doesn't come off easily, if at all. Written on the tape in black letters was the sentence: "Get well soon - from the nurse in the Honda you booked for speeding last week." Kind of brings tears to your eyes doesn't it? Targa 2019 VCC Time Trial This year's event was most successful involving 40 VCC entrants and support crew from 11 VCC branches throughout New Zealand. As with last year, several entrants joined the VCC specifically to enter the Targa Time Trial, and the enthusiasm from some of the new and younger members was most heartening. We also had great interest from the general public in our older cars, especially in conjunction with VCC branch car displays in Taupo and Palmerston North. I was also approached by several owners of VCC eligible classic cars who're not currently members of the VCC, and we look forward to them joining us for next year's event. If any of your branch members would like to be added to our database for updates and specific information regarding the Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial, please ask them to contact me directly. JOSEPHVILLE HILLCLIMB 2019 Event Report On Sunday the 24th of November the Gore Vintage Car Club held its 14th annual Josephville Hillclimb. Preparations began several weeks before, with the racing permit secured well ahead of time and course maintenance completed on the preceding Friday; many thanks to the team at South Roads Lumsden for their road sweeping services. Entrants, although down on previous years and missing a couple of the usual suspects, were still geographically diverse, although the Henderson family ties remained strong. Perhaps last year’s poor weather had an impact on numbers, but we are definitely still looking for more outside competition, so please spread the word! After 2018's rather wet affair, the week leading up to the event had extra attention placed on the forecast, which appeared promising. However, despite significant technological advances, it would seem long range forecasting accuracy has not improved greatly over the years! At first light things were as anticipated and hopes remained high for a fast dry track. Upon arriving at the Mitchell property, the sky was clear and blue with a gentle gust of wind. Radios and timers were tested, all relevant competitor paperwork was completed, and all cars were scrutinised by Terry Inder. The first mechanical issue occurred before the first car had even approached the start line, with the "dunny" arriving late due to a flat tyre. The drivers' briefing was delivered on schedule at 11am, with practice runs underway shortly thereafter. The traditional break for lunch was held after the practice, leaving time for drivers to contemplate the state of their "warmup" as a few yarns were exchanged. Then it got serious as the leadfeet came out and the real racing began. Racing was as close as always, with an even distribution of times across the field. When the dust had settled – and thanks to an increasingly strong wind there was plenty of it – the top honour once again belonged to Neil Longman in his Mallock U2 and its Hillman Avenger engine He finished comfortably ahead of the field in a time of 26.56 seconds. That's two out of two for Neil thus far, but there is still some work to do if he wants to take the Hill record! 26
Phil Benvin and Willie Henderson made the trip for a third successive year and seem to have made it a regular part of their racing calendar. Kudos fellas. Phil continues to improve his driving skills in the Jaguar XK 140, this year finishing ahead of Willie, who had his first ever serious "loss of traction" coming around the first major bend. After a personal best in 2017, Evan Henderson took his MK2 out of retirement to smash his previous personal best, continuing his "Jaguar" dominance at home. (This however is not the case at the Nelson and Hawkswood Hillclimbs, where brother Willie currently has a small edge). Mervyn Frew in his Porsche 911 was typically fast, finishing a clear second, but couldn't quite compete with the speed and handling of the Mallock. Neil McDonald was unable to complete any timed runs due to a broken flywheel and was wise to immediately shut the engine down, not wanting to risk further damage. Luckily it stayed in the bell housing. This is a real shame, as the Monroe had already demonstrated in its solitary run that it was finely tuned with a little extra horsepower, coming in third overall. I guess it really is true you can have too much of a good thing! Greg Elder in his canary yellow Ford Escort Sport posted a very respectable time, beating out Terry Inder in his matching overalls by less than two-tenths of a second. Bill Sheddan's Sunbeam Alpine was given its first outing and also performed well, coming close to his Sunbeam Rapier's best time. At day’s end presentations were briefly held at 2pm, with Neil Longman winning the Stewart Quertier Trophy for fastest time, and Dick Shanks the Alec McLennan Trophy for his continued support and dedication to the event. A stellar effort gentlemen! The Gore Vintage Car Club would like to give a special thanks to the Mitchell family for the use of their property, Ian Ridd for his continued long term service as Event Steward, the Eastern Southland Car Club – and in particular Earl and Beth Hewlett for their time and equipment – along with the flag marshals, time keepers, Health and Safety Officer Rhonda Wilson, and all the others who helped make the day a success. everyone enjoyed their outing, and hope to see you all back next year for number fifteen!

Brain Teaser One snowy night, Sherlock Holmes was in his house sitting by a fire. All of a sudden a snowball came crashing through his window, breaking it. Holmes got up and looked out the window just in time to see three neighbourhood kids who were brothers run around a corner. Their names were John Crimson, Mark Crimson and Paul Crimson. The next day Holmes got a note on his door that read “? Crimson. He broke your window.” Which of the three Crimson brothers should Sherlock Holmes question about the incident? It seems that reporters from Gore’s newspaper, The Ensign, are following our Branch members around: In the December 4th December, an interview with Neil McVicar makes up the “Looking Back” column on page 9 and “art student” Mary Kennedy is featured in an article about SIT’s annual “Art for Leisure” exhibition on page 16. Coralie Bewley is one of the “Nattering Knitters” pictured on page 7 of the December 6th edition celebrating the creation of 3,000 “Hug Rugs” for deserving causes in the community. Not to be outdone, Rod Bell appears on the front cover of the December 11th edition of The Ensign in an article about green waste he found dumped on the Mataura River bank. The “Ken Muir Car Collection – Edendale” is the subject of “Behind the Garage Door” on pages 68 & 69 of the January 2020 issue of New Zealand Classic Car. (On pages 6 to 14 of the same issue is an article on the Ford Anglia featuring two “local” cars. One, owned by John Tait, was “bought off a chap in Riverton” and is currently on show at Transport World in Invercargill. The other is owned and used by Winston Saxton of Thornbury. Game on the Plane A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on a long haul flight. The lawyer asks the blonde if she’d like to play a fun game. The blonde politely declines as she is tired and just wants to take a nap. But the lawyer persists, explaining that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains the game: “I’ll ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you owe me $5 – and vice versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you don’t know the answer you pay me $5.00, and, if I don’t know the answer, I’ll give you $500.00.” This catches the blonde’s attention and she quickly changes her mind. The lawyer asks first: “What’s the distance from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 note and hands it to the lawyer. Now the blonde’s turn, she asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?” This puzzles the lawyer who takes out his laptop and searches through his files – but finds no answer. Thinking about the $500 bet, he decides it’s worth buying a connection to the plane’s WiFi. He finds no answer on the internet, and frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and co-workers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00. The blonde says ”Thank you,” and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, taps her shoulder and asks ”Well, what’s the answer!?” Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep.
