Chairman's Report May 2019 The April meeting was well-attended by members. A big thank you to Star McDougall for organising and introducing the guest speaker, Charles â€œChuckâ€? Pritchard, who gave members a very interesting talk on shifting from South Africa to live in New Zealand. Guest speakers make for a pleasant change on meeting nights. If anyone knows of a suitable speaker please let us know. Sad news to hear of the unexpected death of long-time club member Robin Dickson. We extend our very deepest sympathies to his family. April has been another busy month for vintage motoring. Some members are motoring up to Ashburton for the National South Island Easter Rally and others to the Wheels at Wanaka the same weekend, plus approx. 150 Model A Fords are heading to Te Anau. Now that will be a sight! I will be taking my Veteran Cadillac to Wanaka and then the following weekend to the Golden Autumn Festival rally in Arrowtown. The AGM is coming up in June so remember to fill in a nomination form as there will be positions to fill. Happy Motoring Greg Elder

Club Captain’s Report May 2019 The year is disappearing fast and it certainly feels like winter is coming. The Ladies Run on the 7th of April saw a good turnout of about 14 cars and a pleasant run to Wyndham. Once there we travelled a short distance to Duncraigen Farm owned by Bruce and Carolynn Robertson where we viewed an impressive garden and enjoyed afternoon tea in the sun. Thanks to Fay for organising the run and congratulations to Janet Brewster who was the winning driver. Des tells me that Janet is not a member but the whole point of the Ladies Run is to get wives and partners involved and it was great to see many of the ladies driving. It also gives the men an opportunity to be navigator and write down the answers to questions while in a moving car, which is not as easy as the ladies make it look! The next run is the Night Trial on the 11th of May and is being organised by Bill Sheddan. Bill always manages to put an interesting spin on the night trial, so come along and join in the fun. Don’t forget to bring a torch with good batteries and a plate for supper. The End of Season Run is on the 8th of June and Charlie Davis and Ray Taylor have the planning for this in hand including some shed visits. Come along and enjoy the last club run for the season. Katy and I attended Robin Dickson’s funeral on the 17th of April and it was great to see a large number of vintage car club members in attendance. From the Editor’s keyboard Wow! Thanks to an influx of (mostly voluntary!) material, it has been impossible to fit everything in this month. I have, therefore, concentrated on “topical” stories and reports and there is a lot more very interesting material to come in the near future. How many of you went to the National Easter Rally in Ashburton or Wheels at Wanaka? Donna and I had a great two days at Wanaka and bumped into several Branch members who had cars in the displays. I hear that others of you went to Ashburton (and on the big Model A Rally in Te Anau) so I am looking forward to receiving lots more stories from people very soon  Happy reading, David North

Notes on the VCC Executive Committee meeting, 23rd March 2019 1. Notice of Meeting was read by the Secretary. 2. Apologies were read out and accepted. 3. Roll Call was circulated. 4. Minutes of previous meeting: taken as read. Passed as correct. 5. Matters Arising: none 6. Correspondence: letter from Horowhenua Branch seeking change to boundary with Wellington Branch. To be discussed by the two Branches. 7. Membership Status: total 8,512 at 21 March 2019. Gore membership (2018 in brackets): 154 (147); vehicles 328 (311); VICs 189 (180). 8. Reports (most were pre-circulated and presented as “powerpoints”, I can provide more details and/or copies of the full reports on request): Secretary/Treasurer: budgeted income ahead of forecast and expenditure behind but expected to come out even at end of financial year. Vero profit share $36,945 (does not include money Branches get from members’ Vero policies.) Currently $1.4M held in Term Deposits, including Vero sponsorship for the 2021 Festival in Taranaki, insurance payout on Head Office building. 50-year membership: I think approx. 350 awarded so far, also thirty-four 60-year memberships. South Island Club Captain (Alon Mayhew): 53 entrants on 2018 South Island National Veteran Rally; 182 on 2019 National Motorcycle Rally and 170 so far for 2019 National Easter Rally. 2019 National Veteran Rally, 2020 South Island Club Captain’s Tour, 2020 National Veteran Rally in planning stages. Reminder that 2021 Festival of Historic Motoring needs big “buy-in” from members. North Island Club Captain (Kaaren Smylie): Very successful North Island Club Captain’s Tour. New event, Highland Frolic 2020, being planned, similar to South Island’s Irishman Creek Rally. Will be 2day, low cost event. Vehicles pre-1931 to set theme, rally routes in Central North Island on country back roads and farm tracks where possible. Plug for 2021 International Festival of Motoring – the organisers, Greg Terrill and Tony Haycock, are willing to visit Branches to give a presentation about the Festival, all invitations welcome! 10

Beaded Wheels (Kevin Clarkson): December 2018 issue late for some members as printers had problems. Always looking for material. Online distribution for non-members being looked at (possibly also an option for members) and online advertisement placement. Speed Steward (Tony Haycock): new members from Targa Time Trial. Some progress on post-1960 cars for MSNZ circuit events. Archivist (Don Millar): all archive books now catalogued on free library software (bookTome). Members welcome to visit archives. Insurance: Vero profit share was up $8k compared to last year. Registrar (Rod Brayshaw): the first National Vintage Rally will be held on the North Island, probably in 2020. Reminder that VIC photos must be correct size and all questions on VIC application forms must be answered or “Not Applicable” otherwise forms will be returned. LVVTA: New Board in place, 2 new technical advisors. NZTA: 12-month WoFs Historic Vehicles, no progress. FIVA: VCC’s 2021 Festival granted official FIVA status so logo will appear on paperwork, publicity etc. Growing popularity of “Survivor” classes in shows. FIVA General Assembly: presentation on FIVA Guide for responsible use of historic vehicles on today’s roads https://www.fiva.org/?p=8820. “Climate change”, world needs to develop fuel strategy; dealing with today, preparing for tomorrow; changing patterns of vehicle use and ownership; potential for banning or limiting use of historic vehicles; potential problems with mixing historic vehicles with autonomous/interacting vehicles; loss of skills needed to maintain/repair historic vehicles; fuels with ethanol can be a problem for some older vehicles but modern vehicles designed for them. Possibility of additives as for lead/octane boosters? (N.B. Challenge fuels may have up to 10% ethanol in some areas, Gull fuels also contain ethanol.) Alternative, less polluting fuels being developed, e.g. by Shell. Historic vehicles often seen as “dirty polluters”. Study in Holland showed air pollution 90% less than in 1990, but public perception is that it is worse. NZ Federation of Motoring Clubs (Tony Bartlett): Jaguar Club has raised issue of compulsory third party insurance. Tolerances for older vehicles at WoFs discussed with NZTA, some WoF stations won’t test “old” vehicles because takes too long. 12-month WoF for vehicles over 30 years-old raised, progress unlikely. Trying to get definition of “vintage vehicle” in NZ legislation amended to over 30 rather than over 11

40 years-old. FoMC well aware of problems of safeguarding future use and enjoyment of fossil-fuelled vehicles. May be necessary for “historic vehicles” to be owned by “enthusiasts” to separate them from “just old” vehicles, but what evidence will be required? Club membership, VICs, etc? Need to be aware of loss of skills for maintaining, repairing historic vehicles, apprenticeships being lost as NZQA sees no need for them. Communications & Marketing (Ross Holden): online branch newsletters, total number of “reads” now 49,599. Ross believes quality of newsletters has improved over past 2 years, greater number of photos. Facebook page has 1,300 “followers”, up from 1,178 in October. Top post from past 3 months was from Tony Haycock about Banks Peninsula Branch Monte Carlo rally which reached 4,425 people. VCC National Day 2018 (Diane Quarrie): raised over $62k ($40k in 2017); 28 of 36 Branches participated (24 in 2017), 3,000 vehicles entered (2,000 in 2017), increased media attention generated. “Branding” gave consistent look to publicity throughout the country. If I heard correctly, cost to the VCC was $8,371. ($3,331 design fees, $1,500 windscreen stickers, $1,815 advertising in Petrolhead magazine, $1,725 advertising in NZ Classic Car magazine.) Thoughts for 2019: “national” advertising, or leave it to Branches to do their own thing? The designer has advised not continuing with stickers because of cost but a number of Branches were in favour of keeping them as they identified cars and lasted well, so were visible for months afterwards*. Will be employing professional photographer to take photos at one Branch event to provide high quality photos for Beaded Wheels cover and advertising for next year. How to persuade last 8 Branches to take part? What worked well? Letters to local car clubs inviting them to the event worked well in some areas, as did car shows. *Something on cars that onlookers could see as they went by or were parked up was valuable. Does the VCC continue with the Cancer Society, or choose a different charity? This to be discussed at the August Executive meeting. VCC Rally 2021 (Tony Haycock): special rates for all types of accommodation from the official supplier who is also sponsoring part of the Festival. Apparently accommodation is already selling out. No speed event, no nearby circuit or other venue and no time or space to organise anything. Each category of VCC vehicle will have its own National Event and this will be the sole competitive element of the Festival. Long 12

and short routes for each motoring day plotted and being checked. “The aim of the committee is that by the end of this year we have the Festival complete to the state we could run it at a week’s notice.” Will be update in each issue of Beaded Wheels. Rubber magnetic signs for cars with the Festival logo etc. designed and available for Branches to buy at $40 a pair. Lengthy discussion about National Motorcycle Rally 2021. VCC rules state no National Rally in the same year as an International one and the “normal” cycle for the Motorcycle Rally means there should be one in 2021 but they have been told it cannot take place until 2022. I think the gist of it was that motorcyclists are very unhappy that there will not be a (standalone) National Motorcycle Rally in 2021. At the end of the discussion a Motion was put to grant dispensation for one year so that a National Motorcycle Rally could be held in 2021. This was carried and Tony Haycock confirmed that there would not be one at the Festival. 9. Notice of Motion: none. 10. Changes to By-Laws (introduced by Tony Bartlett): to add the Code of Conduct to the By-laws. Carried. 11. Remit to change the By-laws (Rod Brayshaw & Tony Bartlett): this sought to eliminate the possibility of two conflicting Notices of Motion being progressed to the voting stage by giving the Executive Committee the ability to suggest changes or to reject proposed Notices of Motion. Lots of discussion. No support for current wording and members or Branches are asked to send any thoughts to Tony Bartlett. 12. General Business. South Canterbury Branch National Rally expenses: it is customary for the Club President and spouse, or representative(s) to be invited to attend National Rallies. Head Office pays their travel expenses but hosting Branch pays for accommodation, meals etc. Very small entry for National Rally in question so extra cost per entrant fee high. Branch was asking for grant to offset cost. Branches can apply to the appropriate Club Captain and such requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. Eligible vehicles according to Branch Manual paragraphs 21c and 21j. Branch Manual updated, reference to eligible categories for VCC National and International Rallies given as B1 to B4 when should have been B1 to B5. Motion proposed and carried to correct this. John L Goddard Trophy: no nominations at all last year, calling for some for this year! 13

Draft Branch Constitution: It will not be compulsory for Branches to use it but is intended to be as flexible as possible to allow for future changes to the Club Constitution. Only time for a short discussion. Some Branches unhappy that Branch committee members must live in the Branch territory. Others asked if an “Associate” membership was possible at Branch level but this is not in the Club’s Constitution. Comments need to be in to Head Office by end of April. AGM. Registration forms will be out in late May. Ashley Hotel in Greymouth will be the venue. If delegates fly to Hokitika the hosting Branch will organise transport for the 40km to Greymouth. Executive Committee meetings: format to be looked at. Became apparent that not all the Agenda would be completed, delegates started leaving after lunch and many had late afternoon flights. Flights make it difficult to keep to one day unless all delegates stay overnight. Health & Safety: the Event Checklist. Should this be made mandatory for all Branch and Club events? No time for discussion so carried over to next Executive Committee meeting (at the AGM). Obituary Robin McLeod Dickson, 10/04/1945 – 08/04/2019

In the early ‘80s I regularly visited Robin at his home on the hill on Wentworth Street, Gore. At the time he was restoring a 1914 Model T Roadster. We struck up a good friendship attending rallies here and there in his original 1924 Buick 4 Tourer. Not long after he purchased a 1912 Model T Roadster that was already restored and was the start of his car collecting which eventually totalled 62, of which 18 were Veterans. Robin started as a member of the Southland VCC before the Gore branch was formed, but left the club to study a diploma in wool and wool classing at Massey and returned to the VCC as a Gore member to which he was a year short of receiving his 50-year badge. Returning from Massey he starting working for R & F Wallis, a wool buying firm, and went on to work for Brian Redding Wool Buyer, eventually buying the business with partner Jim Paterson. Robin only retired fully 3 years ago, latterly working part days and weeks. Robin’s occupation strongly favoured his hobby, frequenting farms in the 1960s to the present, often returning with a load of wool and car parts. As a result, he had amassed a large collection of Cadillacs, Overlands, Maxwell, Jeffery, Reo and Ford T & F Veterans as well as numerous vintage and classic vehicles. As many will know he was very approachable and often helped out with parts but seldom sold cars. 16

In the many years of knowing Robin and Susan I never found him anything but happy, always good to talk old cars and their history. His memory and knowledge impressed me greatly. From not only being a long time VCC member, Robin was also very involved as a member of the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club and the Veteran Car Club of New Zealand. Robin is survived by his wife Susan, daughter Joanna, sons Andrew, Tim and families. I am certainly going to miss you and our old car discussions, our parts deals and swaps my friend. Paul Herron

Festival Rally Report 2019 On Saturday 16th February we left home early to set up for the big day. Months of planning and organising and the day had finally arrived. By 9.30am 49 cars plus another 50 or so navigators were all set to go. The first car was away at 10 30am sharp, followed by the others at set intervals on this timed event.

This was our cue as Rally convenors to head away to our Rally destination to set up the hall as well as field tests. Who would have thought that after a month or so of perfect weather including the day before when Keith and I did a pre-Rally test-drive over both runs on what was a near perfect day that Rally day would be any different? But what can you do? The weather is out of our control. Eventually all entrants had arrived at the designated finishing point, the Waikaia Hall. Entrants then completed their field tests followed by lunch and voting for their favourite vehicle in each category.

A quick clean-up of the hall then back to Gore to tally results, organise trophy winners and print certificates.

When we got back to the clubrooms Gerry, as per usual, had everyone well-entertained and a bit lighter of pocket with his raffles. Betty and her team were busy with the final preparations of yet another wonderful meal, we canâ€™t thank them enough for all their efforts. We must also thank all the others who helped in some way to make this day the success that it was, especially our assistant convenors Keith and Raewyn Dodds who are standing down this year so anyone who is able to take their place will be made very welcome. Congratulations to Bill Ainge who was overall winner in his 1929 Austin 12/4 and to John Cook from South Otago who was runner up in his 1963 Standard Vanguard. Also to Glenys McKenzie from the Southland Branch who won the Lady Driver award in the 1936 Austin Ruby that was loaned to her by Keith and Raewyn Dodds. It is gestures like this that make this Rally so special, so thanks to you as well as all other entrants. 19

On a sad note our condolences go out to the Falconer family from the South Otago Branch. Bill Falconer, who attended the Rally, sadly passed away suddenly on the Monday following the event. I was fortunate enough to spend some time talking to him on the Saturday night as I knew him from my panel-beating days back when I lived in Balclutha. I even did some work on the Rover he had at the Rally. We discussed the unfinished Triumph Herald coupe he sold to a guy from Tarras about 1999. It turns out it was the same one that I restored for the guy so I said I would send him a photo of the car finished (so here it is):

February Tuesday Ramble We visited the St Augustine Church in Tuapeka Mouth, an historic church built by the Roman Catholics of the district and opened in 1918. Vicki and her husband bought this church building late last year and with help from Vicki’s parents they have transformed it.

Vicki was the “hostess with the mostest” and treated us to a wonderful afternoon tea, plus a history lesson on the Tuapeka district. There were once three hotels in the town, plus a shop, a school and a garage. Coffees and teas were made from the back of the Morris, fittingly named “Moriartea“, that you see in the photograph overleaf. 28

The afternoon tea was set out beautifully under a gazebo, the day was very warm! And the shade was much appreciated. The fancy cups etc. had some of the men chuckling, they were not accustomed to such delicate china.

This was a wonderful day out and to cap it all off we came home via the Punt, the only one operating in the Southern Hemisphere. At one time there were 25 punts working the Clutha River. I recommend a return visit! Fay Graves

Others are received as pdf files or by email and can be requested from the Editor or the Secretary.

March Tuesday Ramble Eighteen cars and 41 people left Gore at around 10.30am. and motored at their leisure up to Balclutha. Some of the slower cars had left a bit earlier to arrive on time without being pressured. We got to Balclutha and made our way to the Town & Country Club where Jude McNab, our host, directed us to park on a small grassed reserve along with a number of South Otago Branch members. As we parked steam was noticed coming from the engine area of the Coplandsâ€™ Valiant. It turned out the top radiator hose had a pin hole. We left it to cool and moved into the Club for a noggin and natter where Jude introduced herself to everyone (including her parents, Val and Lynda Miller) and welcomed us all. At the same time she announced that the Kennedy Vauxhall was picked by the guest speaker, Bryan Cadogan (Clutha District Mayor), as one of his choices of favourite car.

We then all went through to the dining room to find a Mini on display and the tables decorated with VCC-themed place mats and a copy of Mini Magazine. A very nice meal of fish and chips was followed by pikelets and cream, finishing with a cup of tea or coffee. After the meal Bryan gave a very good breakdown of some of the problems facing not only Clutha district but all of the smaller population-based areas. 31

It was very interesting and quite informative telling us how low-profile districts really struggle to get adequate funding and assistance from central government. After temporary repairs were carried out to the Valiant we then went over to Harwich Street, to the Wake Robin Nursery. We were welcomed by Sue Bound and after the required health and safety message we poked around her grounds. I noticed that a fair few plants were being taken out to the cars as we left. From the nursery we then travelled south on State Highway 1 until the first picnic stop area, where we reassembled and travelled in convoy turning off the main road on to Jacks Hill Road, working our way to the McNab properties and Lochindorb Run. At this point we went off public roads and continued over the hills on a private farm road to arrive down onto Lochindorb Runs Road. The farm road was really quite good. It was damp but firm and we had no trouble motoring over the top, the views down into the valleys were just superb, even though I could really only glance out with the attention needed for driving because the road was also fairly twisty. Once we arrived at Lochindorb Runs Road we said goodbye to Ian McDonald (South Otago Branch member who got us permission to drive the private road) and made our way back to Gore with some of us travelling via the Old Coach Road from Clinton to Mataura and others, like us, along the main road, the â€œPresidential Highwayâ€? from Clinton to Gore. A great day with plenty to do and a lot to see.

Gore Branch Swap Meet 17th March 2019 Well what a cracker day for our annual Swap Meet. When I arrived at 6.30am Murray Proctor was manning the gate and the first stall holder was waiting to get in. I got a few things out in the kitchen to help Des Brewster out. When I got back out there were three stalls already set up, well they just kept coming. I had a quick count up around 10.30am and there were over 40 stalls.

I had a chat to many of the stall holders and they were all pleased with what they had sold and had some great feedback. Must say we have learnt a few things that can be passed on for next year. 34

I stepped in to help Paul out as he had a bit of a health problem but with the help of many club members our Swap Meet went off without a hitch. Many thanks to all who helped set up on Saturday. The Ladies Run This was held on Sunday 7th April 2019. After much deliberation I decided to make this Run as easy and as straightforward as I could. Participants were not asked to phone or email me and so on the day people just turned up, and what a great turnout! I had prepared 12 sets of instructions and thought that would be plenty, but no, my expectations were well off the mark as 16 cars turned up. So good to see cars and people we don’t often see. The instructions consisted of a map and I anticipated that a little local knowledge would go a long way, but some proved me wrong. Dad and Gerry Kennedy went off earlier than the others as they were the welcoming party at the ‘other end’. The ‘other end’ was ‘Duncraigen’ not far from Wyndham, no cars or car parts to look at, no part-finished restorations to look at, but a very extensive garden to admire.

Duncraigen is the family farm of Carolynn and Bruce Robertson, they have a Dorset Down stud, a Polled Hereford stud, a South Romney stud and breed Standardbred horses. The two-acre garden is Carolynn’s domain and as she is a trained florist it features many artistic elements.

The answers to the quiz were all ladiesâ€™ names and as Janet and Des Brewster had only one answer wrong we duly decided that they were the winners of the Ladies Run. Carolynn and Bruce were very welcoming and we all enjoyed afternoon tea in the sunshine. Fay Graves 37

MG Pre-56 Rally, Cromwell 2019 In February I got a phone call from a Mr Wayne Marsh, asking me if I was interested in attending the MG Rally in Cromwell. I asked for the information which he sent to me. I liked what I read, so I arranged accommodation with the Hansons, leave from work and registered. It was organised by the Canterbury MG Car Club with assistance from some Central Otago MG owners. Sunday was registration, briefing and a BBQ dinner. Monday, Concours and display day. There were about 70 cars on display and I didn’t enter the concours as my car wasn’t good enough.

After the display we had to get scrutineered for the Autocross later on. Tuesday was the Observation Trial. I had Allan Hanson as my navigator, local knowledge. Great stuff, we got lost for a while. Lots of questions along the way, but it wasn’t timed. That evening we had an MGA gettogether meal at an Italian restaurant.

Wednesday was gymkhana at the Cromwell racecourse. We had to race around lots of flags, in the right order. It wasn’t easy on car or driver. The car started missing, turned out the carburettor fuel lines had vibrated loose, so tightened them up and carried on.

Next day, Thursday, was race day at Highlands Park. What a great place, a museum, cafe and racetrack. We followed an official car around the track to familiarise ourselves with it. Then we had a go at it. We got timed for two laps, solo, twice. Go as fast as one was game to go, which I enjoyed. The evening was prize-giving and dinner. Dinner was good, but no prizes came my way, not even the hard luck trophy. After the meal I headed for home in the rain. The Rally was very well run and I owe a big “Thank you” to all the organisers and volunteers. “MG, the marque of friendship”. It certainly was. Star McDougall 39
