Chairman's Report October 2019 The September meeting was well attended with approx. 40 members enjoying the talk from Alet and Phill Gerritson about their travels around the world on Motorbikes. They have been invited back by the Branch members to a future meeting to show more photos and video. So keep an eye out in The Wiper. Not a lot to report on the past month other than I have been over on the Coast enjoying 8 days of fine weather while trying to catch whitebait. Hard to believe but we needed rain as river low. Great that the spring weather has so far been fine which will help members who are busy with lambing and calving. Well it’s back to the shed and get a vehicle out and ready for the Opening Run. Club Captain’s Report October 2019 Katy and I have been flat out with lambing so missed the Opening Run on Sunday 15th of September. Charlie and Ray had a good turnout with 18 cars and a total of 39 people for lunch at the Greenfields Tavern. Bruce Price was declared the winner so congratulations to Bruce. The P60 Run is coming up on Sunday the 27th of October and there will be a notice for this later in The Wiper. I am organising the P60 Run this year and we are going to Queenstown to visit Karl Wood’s shed. Karl is also trying to organise another shed so I have my fingers crossed. I plan for us to get away at 9:30 am so that we can lunch at Arrowtown and wander around the Old Town precinct before going to the shed or sheds. I have had a discussion with Rod Bell about the proposed overnighter in January and Rod is quite happy to do an overnighter but not in January. His view is that January is too busy with people on summer holidays and that March is a better time. As a result I have asked David to remove the overnighter from the list of events until we can sort out an appropriate date. John Parish

From the Editor’s keyboard A very big “Thank you” this month to my wife, Donna, for folding and addressing September’s Wiper and to Gerry and Mary Kennedy for driving out to Riverton to collect the copies for distribution at the Branch’s Daffodil Day Rally and the Tuesday Ramble while I spent four days in Kew Hospital having 2 litres of fluid drained from the left side of my chest. I blame the fluid for addling my brain sufficiently that I forgot to update the issue on last month’s cover from “August” to “September”. If anybody noticed, please accept my apologies – and if nobody noticed, perhaps I don’t need that extra proof-reader! Another big “Thank you” to the many and varied contributors this month, please keep up the good work as I am totally reliant on you to provide material, and especially photographs, to keep the readers happy. There is a lot going on so I look forward to another flood of stories! David North
New Members A very warm welcome to two new members, Kevin and Tracy Ryan. They own a couple of what I think are probably slightly unusual vehicles, a 1976 Ford XC Sedan and a 1963 Holden EJ Station Wagon. We look forward to admiring their cars and seeing both cars and owners on many Branch runs and rallies. The Editor

A Message from the Club President Thank you to everyone that was able to take part in our National Day the Daffodil Rally for Cancer. I am looking forward to reading about the various Branch events in the next Beaded Wheels. I took part in Central Hawke's Bay's event and we had a great day commencing with a public car show and then driving out to the Coast for a wonderful afternoon tea at a historic homestead. Thanks to all your efforts, I am absolutely delighted to announce that we have raised $75,000.00 for the Cancer Society! This total wouldn't have come about without a lot of hard work and volunteer hours, so well done to you all. This means that we have donated a huge $175,000.00 over the last 3 years. I hope you are all as proud of this event as I am. While we don't normally single out branches (as this event is about the collective total), I do want to mention Marlborough Branch who raised a massive $17,500 this year. What an amazing achievement from their Branch and just goes to show what can be done. At the August AGM the decision was made to continue to support the Cancer Society as part of our National Day. We do take the feedback on board so keep sending any through to events@vcc.org.nz The date for next year has been set for Sunday 23 August 2020 which is the Sunday before the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day on the 28th. I realise that this time of year is not the best weather-wise but we need to have our event close to Daffodil Day so as to benefit from their publicity and promotion. Melissa is also going to send to all the Branch coordinators a draft email to go to their local Cancer Society to let them know how we went (if you want to use it). National AGM & Executive Meeting August 2019 As you will all be aware, I was unable to attend the National AGM and Executive Committee Meeting in Greymouth in August and nobody else from the Branch was able or willing to go in my place. This means that I am unable to give you a proper report on the meetings. I imagine that there will be something in a future issue of Beaded Wheels but, in the meantime, other Branches are publishing some details in their monthly newsletters and these are available on the VCC Website: www.vcc.org.nz/news-from-our-branches From these reports I have so far gleaned the following information: 1. The draft Branch Constitution has been adopted and is now available for Branches to use to update theirs, if desired. As the Gore Branch Constitution is (very) out of date I suspect that this is something the Committee will be looking at in the coming months. 2. It has been decided to continue with the Cancer Society as the beneficiary of the VCC National Day for another three years. 3. There are moves afoot to update the “branding� of the VCC. The slideshow in the link below shows how the Club is beginning to look at this. It should be emphasised that this is only the very beginning of the exercise and there is a long way to go! https://bit.ly/2HvL9Kp 4. Only 34% of the national membership is under 65 so greater effort needs to be made to encourage younger people to become members. 5. Progress is being made with online registration. Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring Taranaki 2021 Presentation on the Festival As those of you who were at the August meeting will know, Tony Haycock gave a talk about the Festival. I understand that he had trouble with the technology and, reading the Otago Branch newsletter, I see he had similar difficulties there so perhaps the problem was with his device rather than the Branch equipment. Tony agreed to provide an article based on his talk for the benefit of those, like me, who were unable to attend the meeting. Unfortunately, despite reminders, nothing has been forthcoming. I understand from the VCC President that Tony has resigned as Festival Director, due to work pressures, and has stepped back into a role on the Festival Committee. Tony’s place as Festival Director has been taken by Greg Terrill, who was already on the Committee. Hopefully there will be updates in Beaded Wheels from time to time! Accommodation for the Festival A number of the other Branch Newsletters have commented that accommodation around the New Plymouth/Festival area is already getting quite booked up so, if you are thinking of attending, you might want to make a provisional booking. One word of warning from my (and another Gore member’s) experience, don’t believe all the pre-event publicity. The pre-publicity in Beaded Wheels indicated that the Plymouth International Hotel was offering discounts on "all classes of accommodation" for VCC members attending the Rally. I made enquiries to the Hotel in February and at that time I was quoted "special" rates by the Hotel for standard, executive and deluxe king studios but not suites. I asked about suites and was 12
quoted a price that was the same as that shown on the Hotel's website. When I queried the suite pricing, I was told that "the suites are a bit special" so they weren't discounted! I checked the other room types I had been quoted and, funnily enough, the prices I had been quoted were also the same as shown on the website. Unfortunately, I did not print off the prices and shortly thereafter the website showed the other rooms as "N/A" and still did the last time I looked. How convenient! I get really annoyed when businesses take advantage of their customers by saying they will give a discount and then charging normal rates and I don't think this practice reflects well on organisations that endorse those businesses. I emailed the then Festival Director shortly afterwards, spoke to him at the March Executive Meeting and emailed him again several times over the following months but received no reply of any kind. I have also taken this up with the VCC President, again to no avail. I realise it is now well in the past and, particularly without proof of the website prices, nothing can now be done. I also doubt that the hotel will be the slightest bit bothered by any complaints but I do feel that it is very bad form, just as it was for the then Festival Director to ignore my complaint. If the VCC tells its members that they will get a discount then the members have a right to expect that they will actually receive that discount and that the VCC will take up their case if they don't. Combined Rally: Gore, Southland, South Otago, Central Otago Cromwell – 17th & 18th August 2019 August in Central Otago is early enough for a springtime rally, in fact late winter would be a better description as there was scant evidence of the season to come. However the frosty mornings followed by brilliant sunny days were a treat in place of the forecasted wet weather. We motored up to Clyde on the Thursday before the Rally and stayed at the crib. This gave me a few days to prune roses and shrubs and a general tidy up as the place had been empty since Easter. Next day, Friday we went to Alexandra for a meal and when we left to go back to Clyde I turned on the car lights, as you do when it is dark and I remained in the dark. The Prince of Darkness, Joseph Lucas, had paid me a visit and destroyed my light switch. By activating the light flasher I had high beam which enabled me to drive back to Clyde much to the consternation of oncoming drivers. This was overcome by letting go of the flasher lever and driving in the dark but then I had to tolerate the noise coming from the passenger seat. Needless to say we arrived back in Clyde unscathed.

Saturday morning we rolled into the Cromwell VCC Clubrooms and after a rummage through their parts department came up with a replacement switch for the princely sum of $5.00. After our BYO lunch and Rally briefing we were on our way, basically up one side of the lake and down the other. No timed section and very few questions to answer. Easy peasy. Our first stop was at Bendigo Station and their historic homestead where we were given a very interesting talk on the station’s history and current position by the owner John Perriam. From there we spent some time at Tarras for a coffee and some shopping if one was inclined. (Reminder - try not to mention anything about the tourist prices.) We then visited another collection, many acres of it of various farm and construction implements, cars, tractors etc. etc. The collection could be viewed as acres of junk but it only proves the truth in the saying ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” It was Graham Taylor’s collection and he was proud of it. Good on him I say! We had to identify several items, one that had me fooled. I spied what I thought was a Toyota Crown on a trailer. Turns out it was a Toyota Crown alright but it wasn’t on a trailer but rather mounted as somebody said onto a GMC 4x4 chassis. There were several other optional stops to visit before returning to the clubrooms for a cuppa. We then shot down to Clyde to drop off our other passenger Vinnie (the dog), have a freshen up and return to Cromwell for the dinner, it’s only 15 minutes in a fast Sunbeam Rapier. Dinner and prize giving was at the Harvest Hotel or The Golden Gate as it was called last week. I picked up the hard luck prize for the crook light switch which goes to show you that there were not too many breakdowns on this rally. Of the 38 entries 17 were from the Gore club and other than me there was only one other prize that went to Gore. The BIG one, overall winner went to the Parish’s and their Bentley. And 16
another winner was also there, Neil McVicar and as usual he was up to his old tricks winning all the raffles. Sunday morning and we were back at the Clubrooms, it was time for some field tests. Bounce 5 ping pong balls into 6 cups, an adaption of a drinking game I believe but never tried (yet), fastest time to light up a bulb from an assortment of wires and a battery and a timed section to hang up some washing then return it to the basket. Different, innovative and not too taxing. We then took to the road again for visits to various interesting venues, the choice was yours. I chose to go first to John Martin’s shed where we could admire his woodworking skills displayed in a near completed ’39 Chev Woodie which had been originally a Chev 4-door sedan.

Back to the hotel for lunch and farewells till the next Combined Rally. All in all a well-run stress-free Rally enjoyed by all. We spent a few more days in sunny Central before returning to Gore to get the Sunbeam Imp ready for the Daffodil Rally but that’s another story. [One that I look forward to receiving in due course! Gore Branch Daffodil Rally, 25th August The weather was a wee bit cool but no rain when we headed to the Gore Town & Country Club to greet those who were going on the Rally. We arrived only to find the T & C car park was full of modern cars and utes, so we moved along to the A & P grounds which turned out to be better suited because of the number of cars that turned up.
At 1.30 pm John Tremaine gave a pre-Rally briefing and the first car moved off. We headed east, across the river to Knapdale, Chatton, over the Waipounamu bridge turning towards Waikaia and then Wendonside. We travelled along Plains Station Road turning left onto Terrace Road then right onto Balfour Ardlussa Road. From here we headed up the Longridge North road following this and ending up in Lumsden where we stopped and spoke to a couple of thirsty car loads who were stopped and getting refreshments. We then carried on along the main road to Winton where we all stopped for afternoon tea.

From there we all headed off at our leisure for home. What a good afternoon! The weather held off and if anything it got a bit hot sitting around in Winton. Thanks to John Tremaine for mapping out a great day’s motoring. No. of cars: No. of people: Distance travelled: Money raised:

Tuesday Ramble 27th August As winter feeding routine has finished with the ewes spread, but lambing not quite upon us, John and I took the opportunity to join the Tuesday Ramblers. 14 cars with 31 occupants left the Clubrooms for a leisurely drive through the Popotunoa countryside and over the Clutha to Clydevale. The Greenfields Tavern put on a marvellous two-course meal for us all which was exceptionally good value.

We then learnt about the nearby dairy factory which was built in 2006 by a local dairy farmer who owned 18 dairy farms in the area but was not happy supplying milk to Fonterra. He found an Auckland partner and between them they spent $78 million on building the factory. After just 6 months of operation a realisation of where their expertise lay (on farm) and financial pressure prompted the sale of the factory to Danone Nutricia. Danone is a 100 years-old Spanish-established company which started by making yoghurts. This company is seven times larger than Fonterra but the Clydevale factory and a packing/canning factory in Auckland are its only presence in New Zealand. (It has factories worldwide and employs 120,000 staff.) The Clydevale factory has a 4 tonne/hr dryer with a maximum output of 96 tonnes in 24 hours. An additional 6 tonne/hr dryer is to be added for next season. So far over 200,000 tonnes have been processed through the 32
factory. During the off season skimmed and whole powder are used to substitute when fresh milk is not available. Up to 20 other different ingredients, including minerals and vitamins, are added to produce the infant formula products marketed under the Karicare label. The range consists of a number of different formulae including those for babies under 6 months of age to a product for children up to 4 years old. The company is eager to be as environmentally friendly as possible and in this endeavour uses a gas-fired boiler rather than a coal-fired one. A tanker of LPG is required every day to satisfy the boiler’s needs. The cost of this is much greater than coal would be and they are now contemplating going to a biofuel system utilising forestry slash to reduce costs. Every day three trucks cart two loads of product each to Port Chalmers for shipment to the Auckland plant and the Karicare and Aptamil ranges are then sold in New Zealand, Australia and Asia. Twenty farms now supply the factory and these are being encouraged to convert to A2 milk-producing cows to take advantage of the benefits of A2 milk. The Chinese drink very little red wine - and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. The Italians drink a lot of red wine - and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Tiger Woods and Stevie Wonder Tiger Woods & Stevie Wonder are in a bar. Tiger turns to Stevie and says, "How's the singing career going?" Stevie replies, "Not too bad. How's the golf?" Woods replies, "Not too bad, I've had some problems with my swing, but I think I've got that right, now." Stevie says, "I always find that when my swing goes wrong, I need to stop playing for a while and not think about it. Then, the next time I play, it seems to be all right." Incredulous, Tiger says, "You play GOLF?" Stevie says, "Yes, I've been playing for years." Tiger says, "But -- you're blind! How can you play golf if you can't see?" Stevie Wonder replies, "Well, I get my caddy to stand in the middle of the fairway and call to me. I listen for the sound of his voice and play the ball towards him. Then, when I get to where the ball lands, the caddy moves to the green or farther down the fairway and again I play the ball towards his voice." “But, how do you putt" asks Tiger. "Well", says Stevie, "I get my caddy to lean down in front of the hole and call to me with his head on the ground and I just play the ball toward his voice." Tiger asks, "What's your handicap?" Stevie says, "Well, actually -- I'm a scratch golfer." Woods, incredulous, says to Stevie, "We've got to play a round sometime." Stevie replies, "Well, people don't take me seriously, so I only play for money, and never play for less than $10,000 a hole. Is that a problem?" Woods thinks about it and says, "I can afford that; OK, I'm game for that, $10,000 a hole is fine with me. When would you like to play?" Stevie Wonder says, "Pick a night."
