Chairman’s Report As Chairman Ross is feeling a bit out of sorts since the AGM a report is deferred until next month.

Secretary’s Report I still have trouble getting my head around 77 members attending the AGM out of nearly 1000 not counting Joint Members I would like to thank those on the committee who helped make this year’s AGM a success. Also a special thanks to those members that came and contributed to the proceedings in whatever way they felt was appropriate at the time. Thanks also to Doug Watkinson and Chris Parker again for their door check duty, Leigh Craythorne for organizing the trophies as well as cleaning them on the day. Katryna Shaw, Pauline Croucher, Wayne Stocks and Gill Stevenson, John Forster for the music, Colin and Matthew Hey and their helpers for the wonderful Sausage sizzle, tea and coffee both at lunch time and after the meeting. If I have forgotten anybody I apologise. I know that the addition of Katryna Shaw as Club Captain is going to make for a strong team going forward under the leadership of Ross. Last and by no means least thanks to Tony Craythorne for taking over from Rosalie as Hub editor and Web/Master, this will be a huge saving to the Branch in the long run. 6

I have been supplied with a power point presentation on the proposed new branding of the club to be put to our members. You should have received this by now by email as a bulletin, we will be showing this at the July/August Noggins and George will be there to answer any questions or you can email me with your views so I can take them to the National AGM being held in Christchurch on Saturday the 14th August. No phone calls about this please, just an email. Rod VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION CERTIFICATES Anyone intending to go to New Plymouth for the International Rally next January will need to have a VIC for their vehicles. If you require one of these please get the forms filled out as soon as possible. The forms can be down loaded from the Car Club web site or from the branch secretary. Club Captain’s Report Thank you for electing me into the above position. I feel very blessed to have been welcomed into the fold. I have been involved in the club for almost 35 years. As a child I used to run around the grounds with the Meynell and the Henley children causing havoc! The pie bikes were always great fun at the Swap Meet. My 21st was held in the main hall then I headed off to Australia. On my return to New Zealand 10 years ago I became involved with the Swap Meet committee and after organising the Annual Rally a few times I got the bug of club life. I still enjoy the fun and friendship with the Swap Meet committee as we have a great team and I look forward to new challenges and experiences of being on the main committee.

The calendar of events for Canterbury has now been agreed to and this will be tabled at our National AGM in August 2021. Following the Canterbury AGM, there is work to do addressing some of your concerns. Katryna Shaw

Commercial Report The June commercial noggin was held in the Barn inside away from the cold weather, helped along by Don Crawford keeping the fire going for us, for a catch up in front of the fire. Mark Drury has offered to host the July commercial noggin at his place, 7 Birkenhead St, Avonhead, on 21st July. Partners are welcome to come along for a mid winter get together, so please pass the invitation on to any who may not otherwise see it. Neil Shaskey

Parts Coordinator’s Report

Hi all. A fairly quiet month for the spare parts this month. We have had three complete cars donated, a Wolseley 6/80 and two BMC 1800 Land Crabs.

We have also found places to store the big trailer full of BMC parts (not an easy task these days). Most of these parts are in good condition and will do another turn. Thanks go to Colin Hey for arranging the collection of these parts. Our construction team has put a new roof on the small shed in the compound and incorporated a roof light making this shed a real asset for us. Thanks to all concerned.

We have accumulated a large number of workshop manuals and vehicle instruction books. Ted Hockley has spent a lot of time sorting them out and storing them so they are easy to find. They are all for sale so if you need one just talk to Ted who will show you his easy find system. We always give the club library first choice but you might be surprised at some of the books for sale. Regards to all, Wayne

This recovery went like a well oiled military operation. The advance expeditionary force arrived from Rangiora and stripped all the spares off the vehicle, then I arrived and dragged it out of the barn into the paddock. Then the Major, (Ross) arrived with the trailer and his trusty driver Mike Foster and we loaded it onto the trailer. Then heavy recovery arrived in the guise of Tony Meikle and we manhandled the heavy engine onto his trailer and after 40 minutes we all left in convoy. A successful operation. Many thanks to John Smith for his donation and his considerable help in loading.

Veteran Report It’s been a quiet month for veterans, which is understanding considering the weather lately. I’ve certainly not had ours out, but I have at least started doing some maintenance. The clicking noise I had noticed in the driveline of our 1912 car has turned out to be nothing more than wear in the front universal joint, so I’ve bought some blank bronze bushes to turn up some new parts and tighten everything up again. I was worried it may have been a rear axle problem, which would have been a bit more of an issue. Now that the Annual Veteran Rally date has been locked in as Sunday 26th September on the branch calendar, planning has advanced a few steps and the main venue for the run, Racecourse Hill homestead, has now been confirmed. The run will start in Darfield, and maybe stop at another place of interest on the way. There is going to be an open day at the Homestead and our cars will be parked nearby as an added attraction, so with that and some fun field tests, it will be an interesting day. Entry forms will be in the August Hub, so keep an eye out for them next month. Other events to consider include the Daffodil Rally on Sunday 22nd August (see page 27) if we get reasonable weather, and the VCC display at the Hororata Highland Games on Saturday 6 th November which Malcolm McGibbon is busy organising (the display of course – not the main event!). It was great to see Bevars Binnie out and about at the last OCBC, and although he still needs a bit of assistance from a walking stick, he is making solid progress after being knocked off his 1913 BSA a few months ago. He reported that he’s managed to start the 1914 Hupmobile, although driving it is off the agenda for a bit longer. He’s also busy planning out the repairs that are required on the BSA – it’s such an original machine that he doesn’t want to see the originality lost, so it will be a case of repairing the damage whilst trying to preserve the patina. 12

My snooping in other club newsletters has also revealed that Les Gourdie is making good progress on the veteran Jowett he’s restoring, with the gearbox rebuild recently being completed. For those of us who also belong to the Veteran Car Club – don’t forget the AGM on Saturday 24th July. Details were in the last “Bulletin”. In the meantime, enjoy your time tinkering in the shed. RURAL RUN SATURDAY 8th May. On a cool Autumn morning we met at Murray and Judy Collins beautiful homestead in Springston to start our run. People enjoyed a nice morning tea with homemade baking and a stroll around the lovely gardens and lawns. The run took us through Lincoln and around the back of Tai Tapu past Otahuna Lodge to Ahuriri and over the hill to Motukarara then winding back to Coes Ford following Lake Ellesmere around to Sedgemere Domain. Had a couple of stops Bruce and interested observer with the coveted one at Fisherman’s “Monster” trophy. Bruce and Mery were the overall Point on the edge of winners on the day Lake Ellesmere and the other was the Maori Church built in 1885 out near the Marae at Sedgemere. The run took us on shingle and sealed roads through some beautiful rural landscapes. Three questions had to be answered on the way which I think most people got right. Had our lunch and award presentation at the Domain. After a warm cuppa most people motored away as the cold Canterbury easterly blew across the Lake. Thanks to Murray and Judy for an enjoyable day. We are aware that there are some price differences between booking online using the link from the AGM registration form and booking through other options, i.e. normal public interface. The Rydges Latimer has held rooms for the VCC, setting the price so that our attendees will not pay more than that. This is the price seen when booking using the link from the AGM registration form. However, if there are specials that come out (which is currently the situation), they are more than happy to honour the special rate. Les Sloan took care of this month and aren't we lucky he knew the Ellesmere District so well? He had to reroute his original plans four times after the recent rain with roads blocked and so on. The weather Gods made up for last month's miserable day and gave us a nice sunny day and Les found a place to visit I never thought I would see. Paul French, the destination! Paul is a collector of "everything" and what a great place to visit. Every man enjoyed it and envied Paul and a lot of the women thanked the Lord that they didn't have a shed that big! Thank you very much Paul for a great visit. We had lunch in the sun at Osbourne Park, Doyleston A good raffle and a good outing. Thank you, Les. He donated the entry fees to The Friends of the Ellesmere Hospital. Advance Notice

Coming Up July 7 The Midwinter Potluck Lunch Meet at The Barn at 11.30am. All you men have a look at the Edmond's Cookbook and see what you can do. It is homemade food only. It doesn't have to be flash. Just bring for two and eat for one. This should be a good day with George Nimmo showing some of his slides and talking about his trip from Shanghai to London. The fire will be going.

Motorcycle Report It’s cold. It’s the middle of winter. Get over it! We have passed the shortest day… Past Events AGM & Monthly Noggin. A reasonable turnout on a cold and wet night of 26, ushered in the new committee for the year. The lucky committee members are: Chairman Vacant Treasurer Royce Baker Secretary Mike Glenday Committee Jens Christensen, Quentin Wearing, Kurt Ebrecht, Barry Townshend, John Benn, Graeme Bartlett – these were standing again. Hadstock Trial Report This popular and prestigious Banks Peninsula branch event was attended by a handful of Canterbury Branch members again this year, eventually ending with the renowned Cynthia Trophy being taken home by a Canterbury Branch member.* With four different courses set out in two of John Chamberlain’s Hadstock paddocks, the ground conditions were perfect this year with damp but not muddy courses, meaning a good a mix of speed, skill and memory was required on each one to build up scores. Once again Austin Seven Specials seemed to be the go-to tool, with Brad Govan and Avon Hyde both showing bravery and skill on the assault of the cones. Another strong contender was a huge Pontiac Six that obviously shed its bodywork many years ago and was driven in a very spirited manner by brothers Harry and Will Dawber. The dirt which that mobile chassis threw up would have top-dressed Cutler Park nicely! Also present were a few more modern saloons, some almost too wide to fit through the cones. French cars beginning with ‘C’ worked well, although a couple of British ones beginning with ‘J’ shed their grace and went for pace. Canterbury Branch member Malcolm McGibbon fielded his Honda special (christened “The Thing” by Michael Williams), and with its independent rear brakes it fared well, delivering Malcolm in 5th place, with the car taking the constructor’s championship this year. It was pleasing to see some newly constructed ‘specials’ making an appearance, a couple of them conceived during last year’s lockdown and built with stuff found in the shed on a very limited budget. No doubt many of them will make an appearance at the BP branch Balcairn Trial on 25 th July – a fun-to-watch VCC mud-plug and must-see event for spectators (but take your gumboots). No doubt some of the BP members will be keen to make an appearance at our own Grasskhana event at Cutler Park on 24 th October, keen to seek revenge for the kidnapping of Cynthia. Anon (* As a non Canterbury Branch event we may not have found room for this, but as Colin, oops Anon is quite chuffed about it I’ve squeezed it in……..)

Old Cars, Bikes & Coffee, June. Well, we had to get a wet one sooner or later, and quite frankly the day couldn’t have been much more miserable. Persistent rain with a southerly wind and very cold temperatures didn’t exactly make it a day worth bringing old cars and especially bikes out, but the coffee van was still there and some 20 people did turn up – thanks! Even two vintage cars turned up - the 1930 Dodge driven by Eric Cox with his wife, our new Treasurer, Robyn, on board, and the 1929 Chrysler driven by John Forster, who bought along his piano accordion to provide some light entertainment (appreciated). We opened up the Barn and by 10am had a roaring fire going, so there was still the opportunity to have a good yarn and stay warm, and with the coffee van parked right by the door, you could still get the fix of your choice without getting wet. A good hot coffee or chocolate soon warmed the inside too. The June OCBC also preceded the Branch AGM, so the BBQ was set up under the veranda of the Barn and sausages, soup and tea and coffee were made available to those who stayed on for the AGM in the afternoon. This went down a treat, so we’ll do the same thing next year. Thanks to Wayne Stocks, Mike Foster, Pauline and Barry Croucher and anyone else who helped out with lunch. Oh, and to Matthew Hey who kept the fire stoked up. The July OCBC is on Sunday 18th July. For anyone interested the Mid Winter Run will start from the OCBC at 11am. Lyndsay Saunders happened to comment at the AGM that he would like to see more runs for ‘P’ vehicles (which others too thought was a good idea), so given the time of year this would be a great opportunity to bring a car out, dial the car heater up to MAX, and enjoy a bit more motoring and socialising while the weather is a bit cooler. Please come and join us.

Restoration of the Year 2021

Heather Harris with her 1960 Holden FB Special. This was originally purchased by her grandfather Norman McGarva and later passed to her mother Rosemary (Grose). Many will recall seeing Rosemary and the Grose family with the car in its original condition. This has been a ten year restoration with much work done by Heather herself with assistance from other members of the family.

Evan, Janine’s husband and Vance’s father sadly passed away just three days before the restoration judging. Vance assisted his father with the restoration. This is reportedly the only 1920 Tourer in NZ. The cover of the May “Hub” shows Evan in the car at this year’s Model T Rally.

Restoration of the Year Rally Dave Inwood did his usual great job of penning out this run, and started it off perfectly by having us meet at Don Crawford’s business in Belfast (Crawford’s Mouldings) for morning tea. Don had his Model A there with fresh Irishman’s dirt on it, and a Model A pickup part way through construction of a new rear deck. Thanks for your hospitality Don. Around a dozen cars took part in the run, including both cars that would later be presented for judging at the finish at Cutler Park – the Model T Ford Tourer belonging to the Perrin family, and the FB Holden belonging to Heather Harris - more about them later. The run took us out through Brooklands, Kaiapoi, Tuahiwi and then through the outskirts of Rangiora and towards Cust. We then headed back through Ohoka and Mandeville, with a quick squirt down the northern bypass to blow out the cobwebs properly, before turning off Johns Road in Harewood and heading back to the clubrooms. The run was probably around 40 miles long, and even I went down some roads I’d never been down before, including a very short section of unsealed track just to make it interesting (and to ensure the two new restorations were appropriately christened). Everyone seemed to enjoy it – even Vance and Janine in the Model T, who did the whole route with the hood down and surprisingly arrived at Cutler Park no more than about 10 minutes behind everyone else. At the clubrooms around 20 other cars joined us with people keen to see what turned up for judging. By then it was actually warm enough to sit around outside in front of the Barn for lunch while the cars were judged by Don Bennetts and Mark Drury. Although disappointing only to have two cars entered for judging, it has to be said that the quality of both was absolutely outstanding. Each of course won their respective class trophy (PWV and Vintage), but it has to be said that they were worthy winners, both having been treated to full ground-up nut-and-bolt restorations that produced 100% authentic cars, with no original detail being overlooked. The 1958 FB Holden belonged to Heather Harris – the daughter of the late Bud Grosse and sister of Joe – both well known and 24

skilled restorers in their own right. Heather’s own skills have come to light with this car, which had been in the Grose family for much of its life. All of the restoration management was done by Heather, with her being involved in most of the work in some way, particularly the disassembly and reassembly work. She has also compiled a very detailed story/photo book right through the whole process which shows despite it starting off as a very complete and original car, every effort was made to return it to as-new condition (if not slightly better) which involved a huge amount of work over several years. Her Dad would have been very proud to see the finished result, and Joe certainly is too. The Vintage class entrant was a 1920 Model T Ford Tourer, restored over many years by Evan Perrin of Darfield. Unfortunately Evan succumbed to a long battle with cancer and passed away shortly before the rally – his last outing in the car was to the Dutton Malvern Anzac Day run on 25th April, driven by his son Vance (Evan and the car were featured on the front cover of the May Hub). Vance and Evan’s wife Janine motored the T on the Restoration of the Year Rally, both being extremely proud to show off Evan’s skills and perseverance with the restoration – the bulk of it carried out once Evan realised he had cancer, with a steadfast resolution to ensure it was finished while he was still around to see it done. Vance joked about how determined his father was to ensure a 100% authentic restoration – right down to even using the correct Robertson screws in the wooden body framework. Vance told him he had to use a couple of crosshead screws in one place and told him not to worry because he’d never find them, and he couldn’t, because he didn’t dare do it! The car has a fully traced history, and was restored with all of the correct detail for a 1920 car, including an unusual generator configuration and several period extras. A stunning restoration, and what a great legacy to leave for Evan’s family to now enjoy. Apparently there are another couple of ‘T’s to come, also collected by Evan (as you do!) and now passed down to Vance. All up, a very good day out, and great to see the handiwork of our members getting the chance to be shown off once again. Colin Hey 25

Swap Meet

Planning for Swap Meet in October is progressing well. Sites are still selling well, so don’t delay if you do not yet have one booked. Best point of contact is to use the site email address: swapmeetsites@gmail.com which Neil keeps an eye on. As I mentioned last month, because we had a list of volunteer names for the various rosters for the different tasks ready to go for the 2020 event, we decided to use these as the basis for this year. It’s by no means completely full, so you can still change your allocated time, or you can take your name off if you really need to. The roster will be at the July noggin so you can check it, and then after the noggin everyone on the roster will be contacted to confirm their availability. I cannot stress strongly enough that this is our one and only major fundraising event for the year, and we need the support of every able-bodied member to help run it. The more volunteers we have for the various tasks, the easier it is for everyone, so please offer us a couple of hours of your time at some stage over the weekend. A special thanks to recent new member John Forster who has put his hand up to look after the ‘Cars For Sale’ area after last month’s appeal for help. Right now we still have one immediate need - some new locations for our big signs on prominent routes around the city. If you have a property where we could put a sign up around the beginning of September for six weeks, or if you know someone who does, please get in touch with me so we can make the necessary arrangements. Another reminder too that the informal camping areas are also going to be marked out and numbered this year. We’re aware that many of our campers have their favourite spot, so this will ensure you will be able to book it each year without the need for turning up extra-early to get your spot. Colin Hey 26

Unsung heroine's of the kitchen For many years Liz Parris and Amanda Franklin have been serving tea, coffee, savouries and toasted sandwiches at our monthly Noggins, and this is appreciated by many. Amanda along with Gill Stevenson is also our Bar Manager.

June 2021 Hub Noggin Display

All my displays have a theme, this one I tried to get Sunbeam, Talbot & Darracq cars. No luck with the Darracq, but the 2 Sunbeams and 2 Talbots made a magnificent display, many people commented to me on how much they enjoyed it. Thank you to the following members who helped make it a great display. Craig Keenan 1935 Talbot BG 3.5ltr. Phil Jelfs 1921 Sunbeam 14/40. (both Banks Peninsula Members.) Bob Hayes 1906 Talbot Model 4DB & Michael Lavender 1931 Sunbeam 23.8. After 8 years of looking after the displays, the June display was my last. I would like thank everyone who took part & displayed their vehicle, motor cycle, toys, pedal car or hobby etc over this period. In some cases, individual members have displayed numerous different vehicles, both motor cycles and cars. Also, a big thank you to the motor cycle section, whose members, whenever approached, were always happy to display their motor cycles, scooters and mopeds etc.

Thank you to everyone who trailered their cars, motor cycles etc, to a display, getting WOFs, storing their vehicles in the hall overnight and having to make 2 trips or just driving them to the display on a chilly winter’s night. Without this effort, the June display and previous displays would not be possible. I know the members appreciate your efforts. It has been a lot of fun & I have enjoyed experience, meeting many wonderful VCC members. I wish my successor all the best. Don Muller.
