CHAIRMANS REPORT A happy new year to all members and families, the year started off well with a great attendance at the new year picnic, I trust that we will get through the years programme without COVID interruptions. After requesting any new ideas or changes at our December meeting only one was received to be considered by our committee. We have decided to carry on with our programme and have one mid week and one end of month run as we have in the past. Deidre Rennie is putting together names of members to organise runs so if she taps you on the shoulder please be willing to organise a run, the more people that do it the more variety we will get and the more fun we will have. It has been great to hand out badges at our last few monthly meetings to new members, some 20 over the last few months.
If you know of a suitable speaker that you think our members will enjoy let me know in writing please and I will include them in our meetings. Our club had a good turn out at Rotorua VCC car show last Sunday and was good to see our
cars lined up amongst all the groups of various makes of cars. Thanks to those that have gone the extra mile over the Christmas break with a full scrub out of our club rooms and the new paint job outside on the parts shed, also the repair to the ceiling
inside, a lot of hard work by a few. Whilst our welfare person Linda is out of the country if you know anyone who is unwell could you please let Kaaren (Club Captain) or Michael (Secretary) know and they will get it attended to. Looking forward to a great year driving our pride and joys around the country and enjoying the
benefits of belonging to our car club.

Changes to Klaxon The purpose of Klaxon is to provide interesting and topical information on our niche interest, old cars, our Club, and its Members. However, in its printed version it only partially achieved this. Its information was not timely, as it was only produced monthly. As a medium to announce upcoming events and updates it has long been superseded by “The Buzz” – it is only good at announcing long-term events.
You are now reading the first edition of the new digital Klaxon. This change enables us to make Klaxon a much more informative electronic magazine, of varying length, increased or shortened for each edition - longer electronic versions will incur no extra cost! The larger size means easier to read pages with larger text size, and it enables us to include as many (and larger sized) photos of events and Members cars than was possible in the past. It will Include links to stories and articles on the internet that may be of interest to Members who will then be able to choose which articles they want to read by simply ‘clicking through’ - or not. And it is easy to print off any particular page if you want a hard copy. While there will be no more fully printed versions of Klaxon, we plan to provide more timely and pertinent information to those very few Members who are without electronic devices. There are only 4 Members who do not have email and consequently they presently do not receive “The Buzz” updates from Club Captain Kaaren. We will mail them a simple A4 sized “ Mini Klaxon” twice a month. The edition at the beginning of the month will include the months coming events and the Chairman’s report. In the middle of the month edition a summary of ‘The Buzz” will be included, advising of changes to events etc. This will be a win-win for those non-digital members - and to the BOP VCC. We hope that you enjoy the new Klaxon format, which is now very similar to most of the New Zealand VCC Clubs magazines.

2020 RESTORATION OF THE YEAR This year there were three entrants, two Landrovers and one Graham Coupe. Ron Elton and Alastair Jones carried out their usual careful appraisal of each vehicle, coming to
their final decision on the winner—Graeme and his 1932 Graham Coupe. The judges were Alastair Jones and Ron Elton, and Ron Elton has penned the story on the next page. An article on this beautiful cars restoration is in following pages.

Restoration Awards 2020— By Ron Elton Two Land-Rovers and a 1934 Graham were in the judging for 2020. Mike Cochrane’s 1963 canvas topped Landy was probably never pristine and has certainly had a hard life when viewing the chassis and multi welded cross-members, undoubtedly dented, ripped and twisted by many previous owners scooting up or across boulder strewn riverbeds. It’s a work in progress, but complete and remade to original but retaining years of a worn patina. This was easy to compare to Bill and Kim Biehler’s series 2A in standard Land-Rover Grey which was restored to possibly better condition than it was when it left the Solihull factory in 1970. All
pristine with a period heater and sound deadening throughout, this vehicle would be a pleasure to drive compared to when brand new. Many differences were obvious between 1963 and 1970 with the march for creature comforts and fuller instrumentation.
For a complete contrast the Graham, fastidiously restored by Graeme and Raewyn Fenn was perfect in every respect, unmodified except for the addition of an overdrive, and rolling on white -walled radial tyres of a similar dimension to the originals. For its day this coupe was very low
by design but with an immensely deep chassis. The body was wooden frame with tacked on steel panels. For a car of this quality and cost instrumentation was very minimal, but the interior was to the same meticulous standard at the exterior and underside.
The restoration trophy was awarded to Graeme and Raewyn. Interesting that all three vehicles were restored by the owners themselves, with an absolute minimum of outwork being undertaken in each case. A credit to all three participants.

Restoration of our 1935 Graham Paige Bluestreak Coupe. By Raewyn Fenn Graham cars have been a passion of my husband Graeme for many years, since his father owned one when he was a young boy and then from a desire to own a car of the same name as himself, and that passion has grown with his restoration of a 1937 Graham Crusader, followed by a 1929 Graham Paige Coupe and most recently a 1934 manufactured, but 1935 registered, Graham Paige Bluestreak Coupe, as well as all the studies and research he has completed in order to make his cars authentic restorations. This latest car was imported into New Zealand in December 1934 and purchased in January 1935 by a Mr Alexander Andrews who owned the car until 1971. During this time Mr Andrews was a Police Constable in rural New Zealand and used this, his private car, for his Policing duties, including during the war years. The car changed hands again in 1973, and in 1975, Mr Euan Andrews, son of the original owner, purchased the car back again, with the intention of restoring it. This did not happen. The original owner passed away in 1986 and in April 2017, the car was again listed for sale. Graeme decided that he really needed this rare car to add to his “fleet” of Grahams and so in April 2017, the car arrived at our home, mobile, but in need of a complete Body-off Restoration. The woodwork was full of worm and had disintegrated, so the body was removed, American White Ash timber was purchased, the same original timber that had been used – and Graeme set about building all the woodwork using what was left of the originals as patterns. The steel body panels were Garnet Stripped, which revealed huge body rust, meaning substantial cutting and rebuilding of all panels on the vehicle. Master-craftsman and good friend, Erwyn Faile, (a member of our club) who was trained in panel-beating of steel cars, along with his able-bodied apprentice, Graeme, spent many, many hours tapping and welding, sanding and grinding to get the best surface condition possible for the car.

While the panelwork was continuing, the chassis was sent to be stripped and rustproofed by another Graham Owner, Doug Green from Kiwi Metal Strippers and Polishers in Rotorua. By the time the chassis came back, the mechanicals, engine, diff and gearbox had been stripped and rebuilt by Graeme and it was time to start some assembly. Once all the mechanicals were finished, Graeme and Erwyn started to reassemble the body and prepare it for painting. This was a very long drawn out process as the painter Graeme used does a wonderful job, but is difficult to pin down to a time frame, so in all this process took some six months. In the meantime Graeme continued to assemble all the electricals and fuel tank, that created their own problems as they went on.
While we were attending the Southern Cross Graham Convention in Toowoomba, which we absolutely loved and enjoyed, the car arrived back from the painters, thanks to Erwyn and his wife Audrey. By now Covid-19 was in full bloom and we returned home to self-isolation, so with Graeme’s workshop being 20 minutes away from home, we gained an exemption for him to travel to his workshop daily, so long as he did not stop, or associate with anybody on the trip. What a fabulous opportunity for him to reassemble the Graham without interruption!

By the end of our New Zealand Lockdown, Graeme was excited to have his car well on the way and soon he was working as an apprentice to the Upholsterer he had chosen to use. Marty Lambert from Performance Motor Trimmers in Waihi has worked on all our cars and this time he made another beautiful job of the cream leather with matching wool hood lining and fawn carpets. Now it was time for the exciting bits, all the finishing and assembling all those lights, chrome pieces that had been made, (either custom made by Graeme and Erwyn or made in Canada by Neil Butters of Eagle Spares), putting all the finishing touches, chrome, luggage racks, tyres, mirrors, side-mount wheels etc. together.
Then on the 16 th September 2020, we trailered the car to Tauranga for inspection for its Certificate of Road Worthiness, which it obtained without problems, and could then be registered with New Zealand Transport Association for use on the road. A hugely proud day for Graeme – and me! I am so proud of my husband and his determination to finish this huge restoration! A huge thank you goes to Erwyn for his many hours of skilled work. Your abilities are legendary! To Audrey Faile for being a very patient wife. Special thanks to Ivan Allen for his advice on the VIN process. Also the many supporters who made this possible—Trevor Gordon, Coastal Sandblasting, Kiwi Metal Polishers, Winton at Waipa Paint Restoration, Marty at Performance Auto Trimmers, and the many people who helped with searches for screws, bolts, and the many bits and pieces that were needed, or even popped in for a chat and a cuppa. And to Baxter, Graeme’s constant doggie companion.

1929 AUSTIN 16/6 TOURER RESTORATION—IVAN ALLEN A REPORT FROM ALASTAIR JONES There’s one TV programme I make a point of watching and it’s on every night at present, and that’s “The Repair Shop”. The craftsmen and women do some remarkable repairs (restoration), but they are experts only in their chosen field. Ivan would be the equal of most of them all rolled into one, and dare I say it, considerably older
than just about any of them. This has been a lengthy restoration, not helped by losing quite lot of progress during lockdown because he wasn’t working from home. And I’m sure he won’t mind me telling you that the
medicos have finally got to the bottom of his malaise. Anyway I promised some time ago to check out how he’s getting on and there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a faint chance it could be ready for the NP Festival of Historic Motoring in
2022 if enough of you pull finger and make up the required numbers of about 850!

1929 AUSTIN 16/6 TOURER RESTORATION—IVAN ALLEN The body and wings are away at present being painted in colours that will really set off this rare vehicle as most of this model were fitted with closed bodywork. I can only describe the chassis and all mechanicals as being “jewelled in every hole”. It is much easier to do electrical wiring, pipe-work, exhaust system, bracketry with the body off instead of doing it from underneath. Sir Herbert was a very good engineer and his middle to upper range of Veteran and Vintage vehicles were constructed to a very high standard, but Ivan has exceeded the factory finish without overdoing it. Many parts were missing or rusted and worn out so they have had to be made from scratch and I was particularly impressed with the bezel he has made for the tail-light. The work in making just this one small item with its threaded internal screw and knurling on the rim would have entailed hours and hours of detailed lathe-work.
I’m looking forward to seeing this car inspected by the cognoscenti and hearing their comments.

Ivan Shannon’s Rolls Royce Roadster Progress report from Alastair Jones, Photos from Ivan Shannon Following his visit to Ivan Allan, AJ decided to visit and see what progress is being made on Ivan Shannon’s Rolls-Royce Roadster. I dropped in see where he’s at with the body-work expecting to see wooden framework well advanced thanks to his excellent wood-working skills. Well, there’s been a complete rethink thanks to the problems with constructing a wooden framed body skinned with either aluminium or steel. This problem has plagued the coach-builders from the day horses were sent to the knackers yard until monocoque bodies were built from pressed steel panels. The problem is fatigue cracking due to flexing of the chassis.
With such a long wheel-base and no cruciform bracing, Rolls Royce was particularly prone, hence they used the Weyman system that allowed the body to be made from panels that could move against one another.
Just reading a book of the ABC of British coachbuilders was a reminder how much the designers tried to overcome the problem, always without success.

Ivan Shannon’s Rolls Royce Roadster Ivan has eliminated the conventional way all of us would have taken, and has approached it like one would build an aluminium boat using 5mm profiles cut in rather lengthy sections on his band-saw to form the inner body sections. I was hugely impressed with his “out of the box” thinking that will result in an incredibly stiff body resulting in no wood joints to loosen or panels to crack. It should stiffen up the chassis and let the softened springs do more work. I fear for the usual wooden dash and door cappings that R-R favoured! I can see that his approach to the job will cause a lot of thinking amongst the “traditionalists” but I reckon he’s onto a good thing and await the forming of the outer skins to appreciate the final shape.
