CHAIRMANS REPORT March 2021 Last weekend I attended the Executive meeting for the VCC in Wellington and I will pass on as much information as I can over the next few weeks. The VCC Head Office was given at the last meeting a directive to produce a new logo for the club which was presented at the meeting, I intend to show this at our

next club meeting, they have also installed a new up to date administration and computer system which should be very beneficial to everybody and will make records and reports much quicker. An update of the 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring to be held in Taranaki was presented and it is going to be a great week, if you haven’t booked your accommodation yet I would advise you to do it very soon, they are expecting over 800 entries. A couple of housekeeping matters, one being the club rooms cleaning, the roster is getting very hard to fill, do we need to look at contractors? Your thoughts

please. The second matter is the “Nog & Natters”, I attended the Tauranga venue last Tuesday night and only 4 members attended, feed back please! The next club meeting we will be holding our “Shiny Parts Auction” so check your sheds and bring something along for our auctioneers to sell, it doesn’t have to be shiny, matt black will do, this will be on Monday 12 April 2021. For those members and families who are travelling away for the Easter weekend happy and safe motoring and for those that are in town see you at the Easter Parade on Saturday.

Details for the day 8.30am – Assemble at the Vintage Car Clubrooms – Cliff Road, Tauranga 8.45am – Depart for Waikino via State Highway 2

10.00am – Morning tea stop at Waikino Station Café (toilets available here) 10.45am – Depart Waikino and travel via SH 2 and Turua to Orongo 11.30am – Arrive Vintage Barn and Model Barn for Museum tour and visit the Model Barn (toilet available here) BYO picnic in the grounds of the Vintage Barn weather permitting, or inside the Vintage Barn itself if it’s cold or wet. There will be complimentary tea and coff ee available to us, and there is seating for around 30 people. There will be no charge to members for the museum visit. 1.30pm – Depart Orongo, travelling via Kopu, Matatoki, Paeroa to Waihi Beach (stopping in Paeroa at the L & P Bottle for a photo opportunity and a toilet stop for those who wish to)

ALASTAIR JONES ACHIEVES 60 YEARS—AND APPOINTED PATRON

At our March Club Night on 8-3-2021 a very large number of Members attended to see Alastair Jones (AKA - Ajay) receive his certificate marking his 60 year continuous Membership of the NZ Vintage Car Club. Very few Members will achieve this length of Membership, so it is quite an

achievement. Before his presentation we enjoyed a very good presentation from Brett Gander of Century Batteries, and welcomed new Members to our Club. Chairman Ken gave a detailed summary of Alastair's membership of the VCC, followed by the formal presentation, made by our BOP Club Captain Kaaren Smylie, wearing her hat as a Member of the NZ VCC – North Island Club Captain. Alastair spoke in reply, and was joined by his wife Gwen, who has travelled his VCC path with him all this time and has proven to be a great wife, mother and companion!

However, Ken then made a further announcement regarding filling the vacant position of Club Patron, and the additional surprise (particularly for Gwen!) was that the worthy person chosen was no other than – Alastair Jones!

Not only is AJ very popular with BOP VCC Members, he would be one of the most well-known members in our 9000 member National organisation. He is very highly thought of by the Management Committee and his numerous fellow VCC colleagues. The Vintage Car movement in NZ has been AJ’s passion for over 60 years, but even after all this time he continues to work tirelessly for the Club. He is our "Mr Fix it Man"...when anyone needs to know anything, or find a part or two for their autos, or wants a job done, who does everyone contact ...Alastair. There is no-one more deserving of our appreciation and respect than AJ. We then witnessed a very unusual event – Alastair was speechless!

And to complete an excellent night, Yvonne Allen and her team prepared a sumptuous supper for all. It was a memorable Club night. A MESSAGE FROM ALASTAIR To all my fellow Branch and Club Members, Thanking everybody at Club night and further afield was impossible. I'm greatly appreciative of the handshakes, pats on the back, best wishes, emails, hugs and the kisses. Thank goodness we're not much good at social distancing. Barring some sort of health mishap, I was always certain Club milestones would be reached, so I've been

lucky to get to a 60th Anniversary. As for the appointment of Patron, that is not something that ever

entered my thoughts, but I will work hard to use the position for the Club's benefit and not take it for

granted. Looking at you all standing at the moment Ken announced it was something that will never be forgotten. A big thank you once again. Alastair 6

Hall Cleaning Roster Volunteers We all use the hall and it needs to be maintained. All that is required is a once a month clean taking about two hours. At the moment there are no volunteers, and the hall has not been cleaned for several weeks. Please enter your name on the notice board list, or advise Kaaren, if you are able to help. If we cannot get volunteers we will have no choice other than to pay someone to do the job!

James Turner's end of month “Scatter Run” on Sunday 28th March! Notwithstanding the Level 2 Lockdown, 21 BOP members cars took part in James Turner's E-end of month “Scatter Run” ! We enjoyed fantastic afternoon weather and some great classic and vintage motoring. James had spent many hours and covered almost 400k to set the run, and it was brilliant, with all entrants returning with big smiles on their faces.

Congratulations and thanks James - we look forward to the next Run you are planning, this time to take us over the other side of the Kaimai’s. James awarded three prizes yesterday for the Run, and the winners were:

Zephyr Club Five Day run to New Plymouth—By Don & Ngaire Wade Day 1 – Met at Karapiro cafe at 10am where we were joined by seven other Zephyrs. After a cup of coffee our run organizer John Silcock gave a briefing and at 10.30 we set off back to Cambridge then on to TeKuiti to top up with fuel. At PioPio three more Zephyr’s joined us and we lunched at the “Fat

Pidgeon” which had great food. After gorging ourselves we were back on the coast road to Awakino, and then onto Mt Messenger (where we were held up by road works just before the one-way tunnel—it looks like they are building

a long bridge through the gully to bypass the tunnel). Past the road works we carried on the outskirts of New Plymouth where we turned off to visit the Holden Museum. This is fantastic, the owner kindly opening for us, as he is not usually open during the week. His site also has a Café, a Mini golf course and is soon to open a luge! The Museum has about 50 cars on display ranging from the first 1949 FX to brand new cars that have never been on the road. After about 1 hour there we continued on to the Distinction Hotel in New Plymouth we were lucky to have covered parking for our cars. At 6:00pm we gathered for Dinner at the Deluxe Diner which is an American style Diner. Fortunately we were booked because they are very busy as the food is great. Ngaire said that it was the best hamburger that she has had. Their American Hot Dogs were huge. Day 2 –We visited Pukekura Park for morning coffee and a stroll around the beautiful grounds. The rest of our day was free to do what we liked, so we went out to the port and around the coast along Centennial Drive. Later that day we had a happy hour in one of the Hotels conference rooms —it was one of our crews 50th wedding anniversary so John

supplied Champagne! Later the group ate

dinner at Joe’s Garage Dinner for —also a great place to eat. Day 3 – After Breakfast we travelled through Inglewood. More road works— got detoured and lost some of our crew necessitated a stop on the side of the road which held up all the traffic for a while, but it got sorted. Then on to Stratford and then Hawera for a cup of coffee kindly supplied by a member of the Central Zephyr Club. We also had a look at a Mk2 Zephyr Ute that he is restoring.

Zephyr Club Five Day run to New Plymouth—By Don & Ngaire Wade (Continued) Then on to view the Elvis Museum. It is a private collection in a garage and is simply amazing. The owner has spent a lifetime putting it together, having made 19 trips to America & Tennessee. The walls celling & floor are covered completely with memorabilia, and it is well worth a visit.

Leaving here we headed to the Tawhiti Museum where we spent 2 hrs.

First we went on the boat trip through a tunnel that had life like Maori figures

in their villages, fighting from one side to the other. There was a wild captain cook pig roaring at you, and at one display the side of the ship Bounty with people climbing it! It

is an awesome display.

It was time to go the café for lunch and a rest, ready to tackle the next part of the Museum which has a large collection of Maori displays, early soldiers’ extensive early equipment, farm gear and shops etc. This must be one of the top Museums in NZ. 14

Zephyr Club Five Day run to New Plymouth—By Don & Ngaire Wade (Continued) After leaving the Tawhiti Museum we headed for the coast to do a trip round the Mountain and back o New Plymouth, but we had a slight hold up as one of the Z cars came to a halt with a distributor problem. However a fellow member managed to sort it and on we went to Manaia and through to

Opanake (where we stopped for an ice cream) and then carried on around the coast back to New Plymouth—a lovely drive. We had just enough time to catch our breath before we were herded on to a bus, along with fellow members from the Central Zephyr club, and taken to the Okura bowling club for a hangi that was organized by the Central club. A great time was had by all with lots of drinking (no worries about drink-driving!) and great food. We also had a look at a Mk 3 Zephyr that one of members had customized, converting it into a convertible, installing a twin turbo V8—and so far spending about $300,000.00 on it. Needless to say, it is spectacular.

Zephyr Club Five Day run to New Plymouth—By Don & Ngaire Wade (Continued) Day 4 – We set out for Stratford and then travelled up to Mount Taranaki. On arriving at the Mountain House Hotel we went into the restaurant for coffee and cake, and when we came out the Manager asked us to line up our cars in front for a promotional photo. We then decided to carry on up

the next steep road to take in the fabulous views, but when we arrived there the gearbox of one of our cars—a Mk 1 convertible— jammed in low gear, so it was an AA Plus call for the car to be trucked home. As it happened they had a cousin in Stratford that they going to stay with anyway!

We left them there, and it was back to Stratford and through the Forgotten Highway for lunch at the Whangamomana Hotel.

Because of traffic we were separated from the front runners when we turned

onto the Forgotten Highway. After traveling for quite a while and no sight of them we tried to ring the leader

but no coverage so we carried on to the Pub.

About ½ hr later the rest of the crew turned up— apparently they missed the turn and then one of the cars accelerator kept falling off, requiring

more no 8 wire to fix. After a beautiful lunch, it was back on the road again where we encountered 17k of metal

road with a notice saying that the road is not maintained. No kidding, it was bloody rough and dusty, however we arrived in Taumuranui and spent the night at Twin Rivers Motel This is located across the road from the RSA where we had dinner that night. Day5 – Last day and the group we split up. We travelled via highway 41 to Turangi, then Taupo and home.

This was a very enjoyable trip. We covered about 1200k averaging 25.7 miles per gallon and our car performed well.

SIGN OF THE TIMES

DOES YOUR CAR HAVE A SMART KEY? Those Members attending the March Club Night will recall that during his presentation Brett Gander from Century Batteries recommended locking your car when in the garage at night, and storing the key 5+ meters away from the car (ie: NOT on a hook alongside the car!). This allows

the car electronics to close down completely and save it continuously awaiting instructions form the smart key– which effects the battery. We have a 2020 Suzuki Vitara with a Smart key, so I asked the question from Suzuki NZ. The following was the reply— Dear Mr Strong

Thank you for your email. The suggestion of locking your car even in the garage is a good one as this ensures the car is fully shut down/turned off.

(The car wont lock if the ignition is in the ACC position and, if left in the ACC position overnight, the car battery will discharge). With Suzuki vehicles there is no issue with having the key fob near or in the vehicle when

the car is fully turned off. No matter where the key fob is, the car is always ready to react to an input and under normal circumstances (fully charged car battery) the system should be able to start the car even after a couple of weeks of no use.

A NEW ADVERTISER! LASER PREP This is a form of cleaning with out chemicals or abrasives. It is an eco friendly and cost effective way

compared to other methods such as media blasting or paint stripping. It can remove light rust off delicate car/engine parts. It will easily clean a metal head gasket—previously impossible with conventional cleaning methods. So what is laser cleaning? Laser cleaning is revolutionary new way of cleaning— a concentrated light pulse hits a contaminated hard surface and achieves the delamination of

the surface (so called ablation) with out any deformation of the surface. Benefits are - no harsh chemicals, no abrasives, no expensive set up cost (as with media blasting), no loud noises during the process, no hazards as with high pressure equipment, very precise cleaning and no clean up cost! Initial discussion will determine if our laser is the best option for your project.

This cleaning can be done in your garage if required as it is plug and play! Cost is dependant on size of job and location (if it cannot be delivered to us) 18

East Cape Tour – February 2021. By Raewyn Fenn Saturday 6 February 2021, Waitangi Day, we set off in our 1937 Graham Crusader, with friends Audrey and Erwyn Fail in their 1938 Dodge, to take part in the Eastern Bay of Plenty VCC Rally in Whakatane, take a few days going around the East Cape to arrive in Gisborne in time to take part in the Three Rivers Rally, before heading home on Valentines Day, 14 th February. We dropped our dog Baxter off at Doggy Jail (read doggie heaven), on a farm near Katikati, where he would enjoy 10 days of swimming in the river, playing in cow pats and bossing around the other doggy inmates. Our accommodation for the next three nights, a motel in Landing Road, Whakatane, was fully booked and speaking to the locals and management of the motel, Whakatane has been busier than ever, since the Whaakari White Island tragedy. The downturn they expected, has not yet arrived. Sunday morning saw 30 cars line up at the start at Paroa Rugby Club, including ourselves, Fails, Alistair and Gwen Jones, Deidre Rennie and Tony Fraser, Les and Helen Duggan, James Turner and Josh Duncan, Richard and Gabrielle Salt, all from Bay of Plenty Branch. What a great turnout for BOP!! It was a stunning day and the Rally had been set by Peter and Robyn Hadley, their very first attempt at setting a rally. We set off and immediately became “challenged” when asked to write down the “Streets on the left”. No problem we thought, but were later to learn that there were NO STREETS on the left, there were roads, drives and crescents, but no streets – first fail! From there on we tried to be on our toes, counting beach entrances at Ohope, letterboxes in Stanley Road, and answering a number of questions while enjoying the beautiful drive around Whakatane/Ohope/Taneatua and back to Paroa Rugby Club for lunch. After lunch we headed north to Matata, before heading left off the Matata straights and uphill into the Pikowai area, returning via the Matahina Dam. It was a brilliant day and the Hadleys did really well with some quite “tricky” answers required. No Silverware for the BOP group to worry about that night, but the next day Audrey and Erwyn received a phone-call to say that one of their answer sheets had not been recorded and they had got 2 nd in the Post Vintage Class and 2 nd Overall! Well done guys! A shame you didn’t get recognised on the night, but a great day anyway. With Monday being the Public Holiday, we decided to stay in Whakatane and let all the holidaymakers head home from 2 long weekends in a row. We had a drive around and saw the Duggans and Fraser/Rennies doing the same. A nice walk along the waterfront and a bit of a nap in the afternoon and we were ready and rearing to go the next morning. First stop was Opotiki, to fill up for the final time at reasonable prices, then it was on down the coast with a number of stops at some amazing vantage points and to watch a jetboat racing up the Motu River. What fun and a good excuse to come back again. Lunch was at Te Kaha, where the old hotel burned down some years ago and a new multi-level hotel, café, restaurant and shop had replaced it. Beautiful, fresh, pan-fried fish and salad on the edge of the water, fantastic! And then the heavens opened! This heavy shower was the only rain we had all trip and oh gosh, do they need rain all down the coast. Further down the coast we visited a beautiful old church sitting right on the waters edge at Raukokore, with a big cemetery behind it. We were astounded that almost all the folk in the cemetery had the surname “Stirling”, including 3 brothers killed together in a car accident. Outside church at Raukokore.

East Cape Tour – February 2021. By Raewyn Fenn (Continued) It was very sobering, but time to get back on the road heading for our accommodation for the night at Lottin Point, just a few kms of the highway, down a VERY steep, sealed road, is amazing! . Lottin Point, just a few kms of the highway, down a VERY steep, sealed road, is amazing! As we sat on our front terrace with a nice glass of wine, all we could see was pohutukawa trees and sea. The steep cliff in front was not negotiable for these oldies! And the instructions in our room told us that all guests are responsible for their own wellbeing and especially their own children. We were lucky that New Zealand’s Navy were staying there while mapping the ocean floor. We were in good hands we felt. Next morning we took time to go down to the Bay, further along a metal road and through a farm road and were really pleased we had. Such a pretty bay and some lucky motor homers camped in a very sheltered spot – another spot to return to. We headed on towards Hicks Bay, where there is a fabulous new children’s playground, and a magnificent, brand-new, gymnasium/sports centre, with big banks of solar panels, for a very few houses, and even less permanent residents! A coffee at the East Cape Manuka Visitors Centre just before Te Araroa, was well worth the stop. This is a factory producing Manuka Honey and lots of associated products. The smell of Manuka along the roads thus far had been very, very strong, (rivalling Privet in smell!), so no doubt they had plenty of places to have their bees. Then in to Te Araroa to see New Zealands largest pohutukawa tree, before heading out to the lighthouse at East Cape. We were told the road was very rough and not suitable for our cars – but took the punt anyway. What we found was a couple of kms of gravel, then 18kms of tarseal, all the way to the lighthouse! A brilliant road made with the Provincial Growth Fund, as a number of large signs told us. Even the carpark at the end was sealed and marked, however, 800 steps up through the bush to see the view from the lighthouse looked to be beyond this group. In fact, a young couple arrived back as we were leaving to go and they were tired and shaky, so we enjoyed a picnic lunch and returned back to Te Araroa on that nice sealed road. Thanks Shane Jones! Our wee guidebook to the Cape, told us that St Mary’s Church at Tikitiki should on no account be missed – and they were right! This amazing Church is full of wonderful Tukutuku woven panels and magnificent carvings. Just to see the incredible stained glass window was worth the visit. It tells the story of two 17 year old young men who viewed the amazing bus trip to Gisborne as a huge start to their adventure of going to World War One, and who are now laying in Cemeteries in Europe, one in France and one in Belgium. The dear Maori lady who talked to us had been to visit their graves in 2017, 100 years after they died and spoke with love of those who are caring for their remains in those places. Such a moving place. A Must Stop, if you do this trip. 20

By Raewyn Fenn (Continued) After passing through Ruatoria, and Te Puia Springs, we arrived in Tokomaru Bay for a night in “The Old Post Office” B & B – and that is a story for another time! Next morning we headed out early and visited the absolutely stunning Anaura Bay, before reaching Tolaga Bay. We walked to the end of the restored wharf, before we headed on to Gisborne along the coast where so many “Shanties” have sprung up beside the sea, helping out the local housing problem. We noted that each “Shanty” had a late model vehicle and a nice boat outside, many flying the black, white and red flag! Gisborne is a very busy place, and logging trucks went past our motel day and night, both laden and unladen, heading to the port, even Saturday night! We found it quite difficult to get a meal on Thursday night as most places were fully booked. Friday night we enjoyed a really lovely barbeque with other Ralliers and members of the Gisborne VCC at their Clubrooms, before we were up and rearing to go by 8.30 on Saturday morning for the Three Rivers Rally. Entrants came from Nelson, Waikato, 2 from Auckland, and BOP, 3 from Eastern BOP and the rest from Gisborne.

On a beautiful, sunny and clear morning, we wandered the roads around the edge of Gisborne, following a route through farms, orchards full of apples and pears, paddocks of tomatoes all red and gorgeous, kiwifruit and avocados, and miles and miles of squash and maize. We saw a yard with the biggest line-up of pristine logging trucks we had ever seen. Mercedes, Freightliner, Kenworth, MAN, Isuzu, a lot of money in that yard! A short trip on the main road, climbing and descending big hills took its toll on one vehicle. The 1912 New Pick 16/18 HP, driven by Dale and Jenny Conlon from Nelson, had gearbox trouble and on changing gear it locked and moved no further! Some strong arm tactics by fellow ralliers, lifted/dragged it off the highway to a safe spot. We continued to Morere where we turned left onto the Mahia Peninsular and travelled through amazing roads right out to Mahia, at the end of the road. (Some of us…..Fenns…. even made it to Mahanga). The views were amazing, at one point there were beaches on both sides with just a narrow strip of land in the middle, and wouldn’t we have liked to see the fishing boat moving on to the huge trailer parked on the beach? After lunch at the local pub, we were free to make our own way back to Gisborne and the Fails and us decided to travel a little further South to Wairoa and then back via and inland road. This was a truly beautiful road and we enjoyed seeing another part of the country we hadn’t travelled. Prizegiving at Smokey Joe’s Restaurant at the Gisborne R.S.A. that night was a big thrill for Graeme and I, winning the Post Vintage Section and The Rally overall! The meal was less memorable!

East Cape Tour – February 2021. By Raewyn Fenn (Continued) We travelled home to Waihi Beach next day and got home before the expected heavy rain settled in. An amazing 10 days of Vintage travel yet again, including 2 really lovely Rallies. 1000 miles of trouble-free motoring. We would really recommend this trip if you are even remotely thinking of it. Anyone interested in doing it as a group next February? PS: The New Pick was taken back to Gisborne VCC Clubrooms where the owner and other members were endeavouring to get it on the road in time for Art Deco the following weekend.

MID-WEEK RUN MARCH 2021 A total of 17 cars met up at the clubrooms on Wednesday 10 th March for a leisurely drive out to Pukehina Beach via some nice back roads, organised by Deidre Rennie. Leaving the Clubrooms we travelled along Welcome Bay Road, through Te Puke township and then to Maketu where there are some lovely views back towards Mount Maunganui. We then took Arawa Road along the back of Maketu and headed out to the Dotterel Reserve at the far end of Pukehina Beach, which overlooks the entrance to the estuary. We were fortunate that we had a beautiful day (with little to nil wind) so we enjoyed this lovely picnic spot. We were joined at the Beach additional 3-4 cars which brought the numbers up nicely. On the way home 6 cars took the option to drive some more BOP back roads – Pongakawa Station Road, Old Coach Road to Paengaroa, and then home via the expressway. So it was a straight forward and comfortable drive, with no stress working out complicated instructions coupled with a lovely time spent with like-minded individuals for lunch. What more could you ask for?

THE WIFE: A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says, "I clocked you at 80 miles per hour sir." The driver says, "Goodness, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating." Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: "Now don't be silly, dear -- you know that this car doesn't have cruise control" As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and

growls, "Can't you please keep your mouth shut for once !!?" The wife smiles demurely and says, "Well dear you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did, or your speed would have been higher." As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, "Woman, can't you keep your mouth shut?" The officer frowns and says, 'And I notice that you're not wearing your seat belt, sir. That is an automatic $75 fine. ' The driver says, 'Yeah, well, you see, officer, I had it

on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket. ' The wife says, "Now, dear, you know very well that you didn't have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you're driving." And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks, 'WILL YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??
