Chairman & Club Captain’s Reports Well here we go again - Covid-19 strikes again. We have closed the Clubrooms and suspended all Branch activities until further notice. The only Branch activities to have taken place, prior to lockdown, was John Stokes's Veteran section meeting. Saturday 8 August at 2:00 p.m., was the Auckland Branch AGM. This was the first time in the Branches history, that we are aware of, it was held in daytime hours and it was very pleasing to have around 70 members in attendance. The following is the Committee elected for the coming Financial Year: Chairman: Martin Spicer Vice chairman: Don Green Secretary: Tracey Winterbottom Treasurer: Ian Hubbard Club Captain: Lynda Spicer Committee members: Alan & Shaaran Price John Stokes Warwick Darrow Robin Elliott John Morrison. The following weekend should have been the Motorcycle meeting and also the National AGM which Lynda and I, plus Tracey Winterbottom were to attend in Whanganui, but Covid-19 Level 3 Lockdown happened again, meaning all Branches from Auckland north did not attend. So everyone, just like last time, be safe and well and please check up on any older members who might need help or assistance and keep a lookout for updates from the Committee on the email tree. Motorcycle Notes There is nothing to report for the month of August. So fingers crossed that by the time you read this we might be back to normal and the Clubrooms will be open. Hopefully, we will be allowed to go out on runs again. Stay safe and well, hope to see you soon. Martin Spicer

Secretary’s Notes You will have seen in Martin & Lynda’s report that your Committee were returned with all current members for another term at the AGM held early last month. Also welcome to John Morrison, newly elected on the Committee, which means we are at a full complement. Holding the AGM on a Saturday afternoon seems to have been a popular choice so likely we will continue this. Ian Hubbard’s Treasurers report showed we are in a healthy position financially. Over the next few years there are some expenses expected with significant maintenance likely on both the main roof and barn cladding. The Committee will look at a plan for the next 24 months and are also considering what requires attention such as a renovation of the clubroom toilets. Two other important points that came up in General Business: Club Vehicle Photos, Shaaran and Alan Price continue to do a great job looking after these, with more rails and space being created and all existing photos have been relabelled. If you wish to have your photo on the clubroom wall, simply get a photo and $10.00 to Shaaran and your photo will be in place soon after. Also, if you have sold your vehicle or know what has happened with photos of existing vehicles, please let Alan or Shaaran know – they are recording movements on the back of the photos to have some continuity of history. The second point I’ll raise here for everyone to think about is continuity and succession planning, everyone committee or non committee position are not there forever, consider who can be the next person ready to move into a role. Unfortunately we did not have our August Club Night or our August Club Run and as I write this, the Committee are considering their decision on the PV Rally. Hopefully this second Level 3 has been a wake-up call and we can all learn to manage this Covid environment in a manner that is safe while not limiting social activity. With that in mind, please remember to sign in when you are at the Clubrooms, at any time. We will continue to ensure that our procedures at the Clubrooms follow all health guidelines. Disappointingly, we could not attend the National AGM and Executive Meeting which proceeded mid August when Auckland was in lockdown. I have not had any news yet on what happened, so will let you know any highlights once minutes are circulated. Remember the Maunga Moana is going ahead in November, (with Wayne and Carrie Roberts heading up a backroad tour to get there), as is the Far North Tour and new news – the Highland Fling cancelled this year has been confirmed for Anzac Weekend next April. Veteran Notes The August meeting was quite well attended with sixteen people present. Russell Vincent is still working on the head of the '05 Cadillac. John Morrison has brought the '06 single cylinder Cadillac which was owned by Greg Terrill, Digby Young and Les Lemmon. There are at least four single cylinder Cadillacs of varying ages in Auckland now. Barry Birchall has been fielding enquiries about taking his High Wheeler Buggy to next years Art Deco event. While working on his book on Auckland car dealers, he found out about the design for Grafton Bridge. Two designs were submitted, one in concrete and one in steel. Auckland opted for the concrete design, the steel one going to Hamilton to become the Victoria Bridge. Phil Henley has sourced the correct Rayfield carburettor for his 1913 Mitchell from the USA, the clutch appears to have been sorted now. The 1910 Darracq which Colin Dickinson restored is now in the Auckland area with Chris Field. Apparently Roy Sharman dug the engine for this car out of a tip. Roy produced a handbook for a 1910 single cylinder Swift. David Lane mentioned that the Penrite Company is making shock absorber oil for old style hydraulic shocks. Dennis Lowe has put the new gear train in the 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile, Dennis also displayed a Kingston Model 3 carburettor off a 1910 Model 25 Maxwell. North Shore visitor Dennis Bonham is still working on his 1915 Overland and Ian Kell wants to sort out wheels for his 1912 Model T Ford. We had a ring from Glynn Findlay who has a 1913 Bullnose Morris and is interested in the section. Finally an old friend sent me a photo of what turned out to be a 1912 Cadillac, as confirmed by Barry Birchall. The car is unregistered, but appears to be in brand new condition, by the look of the pristine white tyres. The vehicle may have been owned by Alexander Wiseman, a prominent Auckland architect who designed the Ferry Building and other well known Auckland Buildings. A check of the early registration records doesn't reveal anything except that other Wisemans, probably the sports store people, owned a Model T Ford. Alexander was related to them and the photo may have been taken near their home “Marama�, in Epsom Avenue. John Stokes

Commercial Notes Well, just when we thought we had got our lives back together, we have been plunged right back into it. With this new Auckland level 3 lockdown, our August meeting was cancelled, so I have to “wing” it yet again. I have recently acquired a book first published in 1967 on the story of the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company, which provided the first “reliable” passenger service between Hawkes Bay and Taupo. Founded in 1903 by Charles Ellison and Henry Butcher with 50 and 1000 shares respectively. They sought the services of John Thomas Harvey and his brother William, who were operating horse drawn coaches in and around Napier, to manage the enterprise. The read, about the horse drawn coach trips across the Napier-Taupo road is positively enthralling and even when the internal combustion engine replaced the horses, the journey was no less exciting. This picture shows a horse coach body grafted onto the chassis of a Lacre. Solid rubber tyres did not make the trip any more comfortable and the cost of £5.00 per person, was five times the cost of the same trip today and could take three days in the winter months, when the Lacre needed help from teams of horses to negotiate the steep and muddy terrain. This interesting piece of early New Zealand transport is in our Library and thoroughly recommended.

September Club Run
September Club Run Sunday 4 October September's club run will be the first Sunday of October. This is to work in with the open day at the finish venue. The run is being organised by Ryan Winterbottom. It will be a 9:00 a.m. start from the Jolly Farmer Carpark, Drury and is approximately 60 miles, finishing at the Glen Afton Bush Tramway. This day is an open day, the railway will be working, with a train ride and bush jigger rides available as well as plenty of gear driven steam machinery relating to sawmills and their bush tramways. There is plenty of room to picnic. BYO lunch or there is a cafe on site. Train rides run every hour. Check out their website or Facebook page. Entry to the Bush Railway is $15 00, which includes your train ride. Jigger rides are an extra $2.00 (NO EFTPOS)

1926 “New Beauty” Model T The spark—why the interest in old cars? I guess it's because they seem to have a personality not seen in their modern counterparts. Even the weird and ugly ones have a certain attraction. So, what got me interested? Back in 1956, as an 18 year old, working as an apprentice mechanic in my father's garage, a "trucked" Model T pulled in for petrol. It really was a hillbilly example, more missing than present. While putting the petrol in, as a novice driver, I was intrigued by the gear shift arrangement - three pedals on the floor. The owner went to start the engine but no go, so he grabbed a claw hammer and belted a nail on the battery terminal. Success. I was hooked. In 1960 I bought a "barn find" 1926 "New Beauty" Model T for £10. It had been a tourer, but the rear of the body had been removed and the original wheels replaced with Fordson van 16" wheels. Dad had done his apprenticeship on "T"’s and asked if I wanted to get it going? You bet. Oil check, water added, tyres pumped up and the string seal on the fuel line into the carburettor replaced and petrol added. A battery hooked up and the ignition coils got going. Right. We tied it to our wrecker and took off down the street. Bingo. After 22 years sitting in a barn and about 20 feet on tow on the road, Henry's finest burst into life. I was ecstatic! Dad asked if I wanted to drive it. Too right, so a quick driving lesson had me in the driver's seat ready to go. The engine was crank started and I attempted the two pedal act to engage reverse to get out of the garage. The car started to creep forward so the natural reaction was the stand on the clutch. Crash, straight into a Jailbar pick-up in front. No damage to either vehicle, only my pride. My second attempt was successful to get car out onto the road and I completed my first drive in a Model T. I was hooked. And so, my relationship with Model T Fords started.
My True and Tall ‘T’ Tales One of the intriguing things about Model T’s is the way to drive them as there is no gear lever (Ruckstell not included). A good friend kept on at me to let him drive my first T back in 1960. We launched off down the road 150 metres and used a circular driveway at the local dairy factory to come about and head back to my Dad's garage, that was adjacent to a "T" intersection. So far so good. I told him to swing around and do a "U" turn at the intersection but he knew better. He started up the T of the intersection then turned towards the pub on the corner. He tried to find neutral and go into reverse but failed. BANG—straight into the pub wall with the front guards straddling the doorway. Still unable to find neutral, we'd roll back a bit 'till he either found low or top gear and at each, he

1926 “New Beauty� Model T Contd.. slammed back into the pub wall. The barmaid had a ringside seat to this while pouring a jug of beer, that overflowed before she found her voice. Another occasion was my drive to a hockey match, as a player, in my T, no WOF, no registration and no brains. At the after match booze-up an attractive young lady asked if she could drive my T? I cranked the T into action and away we went careering around the hockey field. At the end she aimed at a Macrocarpa hedge by the clubhouse. Again, she had trouble finding neutral. As we entered the foliage I leaned over and pulled the wire off the battery on the running board. Whew. Those gathered outside the clubhouse were unanimous in their appreciation! Jim McCutcheon

Vero International Festival of Motoring
Most of you will know that the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring will now be held in 2022. The dates are January 16 to January 21 The organising Committee will be sending out a request for your expression of interest later this year. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU RESPOND to this if you are considering going. Events like this have significant budgets to manage and some of you will recall the last International Rally suffered significant losses. Whatever your view on that result, learnings have been taken and you will have read in the latest Beaded Wheels that the Management Committee will NOT accept the event running at a loss. To that effect they are looking for some surety that entrant numbers will be sufficient to make the event viable. It will not be a firm commitment and I do urge you to respond. If there is insufficient interest, there is a possibility the event won’t go ahead.
This is an event not to miss, a shorter period than previous International Rallies, in an area with some great motoring and the time of year hopefully means plenty of sunshine. So, get your mates together, decide what vehicle you’re taking and plan to be there.
