Chairman’s Report May started off with John Stokes Veteran Section meeting, where motorcycle member Martyn Seay rode to the meeting on his very nicely restored 1928 Indian with matching red sidecar. Gavin Welch drove his 1914 Ford Model T over the harbour bridge to the meeting. The Motorcycle meeting was a week early, as a large number of members were away the normal weekend riding in the Annual Northland Motorcycle Rally. The guest speaker was member Jack Nazer who recounted his younger days in Auckland and how he became a top class saloon car racer. I went to Whangarei for the Northland Motorcycle Rally, which was a great rally with around 65 riders taking part, with the majority of the placings going to Auckland Branch members. Rory King was on his first away rally and was riding his 1942 Harley Army WLA. Rory was chuffed that the bike ran very well and was even more pleased when, at the prize giving dinner, he found out that he had won his class. The overall winner was Peter Alderdice on his 1925 Harley Davidson. The Vintage Section meeting continues to get a good attendance for their interesting meetings. May’s Club Run was the Experts Rally, plotted by Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine. May Club Night guest speaker was Warren Cant, who spoke on his research on the Antarctic and of Robert Falcon Scott and his activities there. The last Branch event for May was a Fish ‘n Chip run to Kaiaua. In June, the main Branch event is the Annual General Meeting being held Saturday 26th at 2:00pm. Remember this is your Branch of the Vintage Car Club, so please come along and hear how we've been doing this past year and what is planned for the coming year. Unfortunately we know there are several Committee members standing down this year, so do think about coming on board to help run the Branch. Treasurer, Ian Hubbard is standing down after doing sterling work for a few years. Many thanks Ian. Warwick Darrow has been doing Clubrooms building maintenance and is also standing down. Thank you Warwick for your time and effort over these past years. Robin Elliott, who has been doing a great job as Entertainment Officer is also standing down from Committee work, due to health reasons, but says he will still do his best to find guest speakers. Thank you Robin for your effort. Another long time member of our team who is standing down is Michael O'Kane, the Branch V.I.C. officer. Michael has held this position for many years. Thank you Michael for getting so many vehicles back on the road for members and also non members. John Stokes will take over this role. So everyone, as I said, this is your Branch and we need people to run it, so if you think you have any skills and enthusiasm that would benefit the Branch, please let me know or come to the AGM and join the Committee. Secretary Notes Our AGM is a couple of weeks away—Saturday 26 June at 2:00 p.m. Please mark this in your diary and come along to show your support for your Branch and have a say in how things are going, (Good, Bad and Ugly!!). We also present all annual trophies at this time, along with any 25 and 35 year membership badges due. Some time ago, Michael O’Kane gave us notice of intent to step away in June from the work as Branch signatory for VICs. This is an important task and one that with a Branch our size has kept Michael very busy. Thanks go to Michael for his work over many years and the thousands of enquires he has handled. John Stokes has agreed to step into the role, but Michael will still be on hand to give John guidance. Michael continues to sit on the National Technical Committee which oversees the VIC system, along with all technical matters for the Club. Remember to get your entry in for the Vero Festival at Taranaki in January 2022 and make sure your vehicle has a VIC. Have you visited our spares recently? Jack Nazer and team have been spending many hours cataloguing parts and putting things into a far more orderly storage system. Jack says he has a lot still to do, but progress has certainly been made. There is a lot of spares there and a lot is now much easier to find. If you are looking for anything in particular, Jack and the team are now far more familiar with what is there and maybe able to point you in the right direction straight away. The Barn in general is now looking a lot more like a workshop with general clutter removed and there is more planned – keep a look out! From the Committee table: a quote for painting the exterior of the Clubrooms was formally adopted and work should be complete by the time you are reading this. Don has made great progress on a simple Health and Safety Policy, which should be able to be ratified at our next Committee meeting. The website refresh is a work in progress, the back end of the current page was too old to update, so a complete redesign is in progress by an external design company at a very reasonable cost. Entry Forms are available for the Winter Woollies, first weekend in July (Wellsford/Warkworth Branch). Finally – are you getting any email communication from me, if not please make contact, I am trying to close off having email address’s for all the membership. Tracey Winterbottom

Club Captain’s Report As I write this it is only another few days until the first day of winter. We are already seeing shorter evenings and cold, but lovely days and luckily most of the events during May enjoyed that fine weather. We have experienced something we shall not see for another 40 years, the blood red moon. It was certainly a wonderful sight here in Pokeno, as we do not have to deal with town lights ruining the night sky and the surrounding constellations were so prominent to the naked eye it just made the whole thing quite wondrous. May has been quite a quiet month for events. John Stokes’ Veteran section continues to have good attendances. They certainly seem to have some interesting discussions. The Motorcycle section had an earlier meeting in May as a lot of the boys went away to the Northland Motorcycle Rally, in Whangarei. The guest speaker was Jack Nazer, giving a very interesting talk about his racing days. The Northland Motorcycle Rally was a success and although they had heavy rain overnight on the Friday, rally day was perfect. From all accounts it covered some wonderful countryside, some roads around Mt Tiger, that resembled the Isle of Man and Auckland members came home with a number of placings. Mid week Tourers had an other great outing. They certainly keep coming up with places of interest to visit. If you have a free Wednesday on their next run date(s), do go along and join them. May saw the running of the Annual Experts Rally, which was plotted by Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine and it was very encouraging to see 11 entrants for this, including two new members who chose this run to be their first. Martin was the only motorcycle entry on his Honda 250cc, but gave up after half an hour, due to the rain and he was getting a bit soggy. The rally ended at the Clubrooms, where I provided afternoon tea. Many thanks to Russel and Jocelyn for plotting the rally and to the numerous helpers who assisted them at time checks and other checkpoints. May Club Night Warren Cant spoke about his cruise to the Antarctic, on a New Zealand organised experience aboard a Russian ice-breaker. A truly interesting speaker showing many photos including penguins, orcas, icebergs, pack ice, Mt Erebus etc. We still require people to join the Charabanc group, so those older members, who presently look after the 'old girl' can start to pass their knowledge on in order that she remains in service and not become simply a museum piece. This includes people wanting to learn to drive her, as it is a different experience from your normal vehicle. If you are interested in helping out in any capacity please contact John Stokes. Thanks to the Library group who continue to grow our wonderful array of books. Please use this facility, which is possibly the largest of its kind in New Zealand. It is great for research, for learning about motoring in the early years and some very enjoyable reading material, Videos and DVDs, all available to hire for a $2 charge per item, so you wont go broke borrowing a book etc. There are, how ever, some books which are not able to be loaned out, but nonetheless can be enjoyed within the confines of the Library. Club Captain’s Report Contd.. these reference books need to be kept in ideal temperature conditions which the Library provides. The major maintenance programme of painting the outside of the Clubrooms starts beginning of June and should be finished, weather permitting, before our AGM. Our AGM is Saturday 26th June, at 2:00p.m. Hopefully this will bring a lot of members out as they won’t have to drive home in the dark. We will be looking for people to come onto the Committee as we have several members retiring. So please, give some serious consideration as to whether you would be prepared to come 'on board' and help your Branch Committee maintain it's very high level of service to the membership. It does involve one committee meeting per month and usually one to two bar duties monthly. As the saying goes “Many hands make light work”, so please if you are interested complete the nomination form in this Bulletin and send it to Tracey before the AGM, or give it to her on the afternoon of the AGM. Motorcycle Notes Lynda and I set off for the meeting in light rain and joined the ever increasing traffic on the motorway to the Clubrooms. Even though it was wet, Chris Goode arrived from Thames on his Ducati and Terry Doughty on his BSA from Kawakawa Bay and from Beachlands were new members Perry Ostick & Julie Walsh on their BMW, the rest came by car. There were just over 40 in attendance, no doubt the rain putting off a number from coming out and also the meeting being a week earlier because a number of us going to Whangarei for the Northland Motorcycle Rally. We had a visitor, Eddie Mann, who is restoring a 1941 Army Indian. Reports: Peter Alderdice reported on the recent Highland Fling Vintage Rally in Taihape, where an amazing hundred plus cars took part, including a number from Auckland. Graeme Crawley spoke about his trip to the South Island for the Annual Ariel Rally, with 40 riders taking part. Martin reported on the recent Branch Gymkhana which was great fun and Don Green rode his 750 Norton and Martin his 150 BSA Bantam. Martin announced it was that time of the year when members had to nominate the Motorcycle Co-ordinator for the coming year. Graeme Crawley nominated Martin and Ian Hubbard seconded it, to which there was a resounding “aye”. This is Martin's 23rd year as Motorcycle Co-ordinator, which also makes him the longest serving Branch Committee member. The last Committee member to hold the longest time was 31 years, which will probably never be surpassed, was Rodger Ball - surely the longest serving Branch Secretary in the VCC's history. Coming Up: Sunday 13 June—Bert Cuthbertson run, starting from the BP Service Centre, Southern Motorway at 11:00 a.m. This will be an hours ride in the country finishing at Malcolm Anderson's home and workshop. Afternoon tea will be provided and his Dad, Bruce will come out to help him. If you have never been to Malcolm's place, make sure you don't miss this run. Malcolm's workshop and man cave, with its great motorcycle collection is a very worthwhile visit. Saturday 19 June—Motorcycle meeting – Speaker will be Rich Easton, who is CEO of the Neurological Foundation of NZ. He also has a large Italian motorcycle collection. Saturday 26 June— Branch AGM—come along and have your say and vote on the nominations for the Committee. The July motorcycle run is going to Ardmore Airport to visit AVSPECS. These are the guys who restore and build Warbirds, including 3 Mosquito's planes. Manager Derek, who rides a Norton Commando, will show us what they're working on. Guest Speaker—Auckland Branch member, Jack Nazer was the guest speaker for the May meeting. He told us about his youth living in the Rosebank Road peninsula in the 1940's and his first job was at the Ministry of Works. His dad took him to the first Ardmore Grand Prix, where he got hooked on motor racing. His first race car was a Chevrolet Coupe and then he built a much more competitive Ford 105E Anglia. In this car he won the Pukekohe Hill Climb. The top saloon racer of the day was Dennis Marwood in a Humber 80. Jack beat

Motorcycle Notes Contd.. him at Pukekohe. The Anglia was improved and made more powerful and was reshaped into a slopping fastback. The next car was a MK1 Escort and this was followed by a Vauxhall Victor Chevrolet special. This was the first New Zealand car to have over 600 bhp. Jack won dozens of races and championships from the early 1960's up to 1977. He then took up speedway and raced midgets from 1982 to 1984. Jack raced against the best in NZ, even our scribe Jack Clark said he raced his Mini Cooper against Jack. Jack's story can't be told in this short time, so go and look on Google to learn more about our Jack Nazer, car racer. Martin thanked Jack for coming and telling his story. Mid Week Tourers There are two things that are constant in Auckland. One is that you can’t rely on the weather forecast and the second is that you can’t forecast the time it takes from getting from A to B. Both the weather and my journey to BP Drury went upside down and a good turnout of the regular Midweek Tourers were becoming quite anxious because it was almost 10:30am and I hadn’t shown up. Well on the way south there was a crash. I battled to get off the motorway and go stop, start through Otara and arrive at Drury to be greeted by many smiling faces. Cedric Pegrum had a full car load in his Mercedes and Leslie Dewhurst was chauffeuring his mother in the family Mk2 Jaguar. John Morrison was giving his very smart Vauxhall J a shake down. Our run took us through Ararimu, Hunua and Clevedon to the Hicks property at Ardmore. Because of the inclement weather Myles invited us into his house to have our lunch. There is a museum which is an extension of the lounge. This room has great ambience and I was fortunate to be seated for lunch by the 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin engine. It is light in weight but with 2.2 litres per cylinder makes it quite large. Handy was the factory DTM Eggenberger BMW 635 in the same condition as it finished its last race. Each race or rally car had an historical story with the Williams built British Touring Car of Alain Menu being quite special, as Myles and his late father Gavin had driven it at the Goodwood Hill climb event. The Leyland Metro factory rally car with its V6 engine where the back seat normally lives, attracted a lot of attention, as did the Austin Healey 3000 restoration that is almost finished. This car was raced at Ardmore, Levin etc. in the 1950’s. Also in the collection were a Rod Millen RX3 Rally Car, Bentley 6.5 litre Tourer, 1934 Ford Hot Rod, numerous RX7,s etc. This was an event that was simply too good to miss. Coming Events: Wednesday 16 June—Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure to visit the Mortimer Motorsport complex at Matakana. If you missed the Myles Hicks run, I assure club members that this run is also special with some very unique race cars and motorcycles on display. Mortimer Motorsport is not open to the public. Full kitchen and toilet facilities are available with plenty of room for your indoor picnic lunch. BYO everything. Wednesday 21 July—Starts from BP Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Jo Bieleski , Neil & Jan’s granddaughter has organised a run which I believe is different to many. Come along and savour what youth can do. More details later. Wednesday 18 August—All being well, a northern run starting from Warehouse Carpark, Westgate 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Commercial Notes Our may meeting, on the night of the “Blood Moon”, saw a good turnout (for us anyway) and Michael Hilliar produced photographic evidence that bones of World War 2 military vehicles can still be found. Michael came across several Canadian Military Pattern, C8, & C30’s recently, as well as a ’36 Chev pick up, all of which were eminently restorable. Lachlan Rendall & Rob Webster joined us after a stint with the Charabanc team. I recently received some photos of a couple of real old timers. The first somewhat grainy photo, shows four possibly Diamond T trucks of around 1920, belonging to Morgan & Docherty. A distinct capital “T” is evident in the centre of the enlarged radiator badge of the far right truck. The company were scoria contractors and were instrumental in the early 20th century for beginning the process that was to eventually level two of the “Three Kings” mountains in Auckland. Morgan & Docherty gained the contract to supply scoria for the foundations of the Civic Theatre in 1929, making six trips per day with 6 cubic yards aboard, all loaded by hand. The next photo is of a 1917 solid rubber tyred International, owned & operated by Norman Clark of Waiau Pa. It was believed to Franklin’s first carrying business and perhaps Norman Clark gave his name to Clark’s Beach. One thing is sure though, a load like that would not have gone far today before the transport-Stapo pounced on it. Keep M Rolling John Campbell

Experts Rally The 2020 Experts Rally finally happened on 23 May 2021. We began plotting this rally in January last year and it certainly felt like we had been working on it forever come the week before when we did the final timing check. Over the many months, roads were closed, then reopened, at least another hundred judder bars/speed bumps were installed, and new roads and sets of traffic lights were added. But on a cold wet and windy Sunday we were delighted to have 27 people in 11 vehicles turn up to challenge themselves on a competitive run. The rally began in Mangere Bridge, headed through the suburbs of Mangere to connect with the recently completed upgraded Puhinui Rd to the Airport. Turning off at Landing Road, entrants then got to enjoy a straight line navigation around this industrial area which is ghostly empty during the weekend, but a hive of activity during the week. Those who did not turn around at the silent check “U-turn” picked up the silent check at the gates of Pupuke Island, then the loop to the start was completed after travelling along the Kiwi Esplanade, sadly the tide was out. They then travelled to and around Onehunga, seeing first hand the blocking bollards locals are up in arms about in the Council’s attempt to redirect traffic, before finishing the rally at the clubrooms, where Lynda Spicer had a lovely afternoon tea and welcoming hot drink for us all. Our grateful thanks to Paul Hesseling, Brad Hall and Leigh Shaw for marshalling and Glenn and Marion Morris for checking the run and being tail end charlies. Our congratulations to Rodger and Val Ball who won the rally, missing only one silent check. Gavin Welch and Sophie Zhao would have come second, but were in their modern having abandoned their Ford Y due to high winds on the harbour bridge. Thus John and Janice Gardner were 2 nd. We had a least 3 grandchildren either navigating or co-navigating and kudos to the youngest, Sophie Heaslip for keeping Dad Mark in their Triumph Herald station wagon pretty much on track all afternoon. Martin Spicer started the run on his bike but the cold rain forced him to retreat before finishing to the warmth of the Clubrooms. With the GPS aids these days it’s still important to keep your navigational, reading and comprehension abilities somewhat alive. Our next non-follow the leader type rally is the PV/PWV/P60 & P80 Rally and we look forward to seeing as many as possible out on 12th September to support plotter Gavin Welch, (there is also of course the non-competitive option on this run).

Veteran Notes About twenty people turned up for the section meeting on 1 May. Neil Bieleski produced a very complete and early Longuemare carburettor which was the subject of much discussion. As far as we could work out, it appeared to be a proprietary unit from c1901 to 1905. It may have been fitted to a one or two cylinder De Dion. Doug Hamilton displayed the carburettor off the 1918 Scripps Booth he has acquired from Grahame Power. He wanted to find a float in better order and the spares were able to supply an Solex one which might do. Doug was also in sore need of a Remy rotor arm for the same car. It was a long shot, but spares were able to supply a brand new one. The spares also supplied some valves to Russell Vincent, which he hopes to turn down to fit his 1905 Cadillac single cylinder. Dennis Lowe had a visit from some of the Subritzky family, whose ancestor Captain Subritzky was the original owner of Dennis' 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. Dennis also mentioned he had had success using O rings as a packing for the water pump on this car, while others debated whether this would work on a later vehicle with higher shaft speed. Roy Sharman has the 1915 Perry and the 1913 Talbot running again. He also produced an early English book showing the supposed advantages of the English light car over cheaper American full size models. David Lane reported that a lot of Veteran vehicles attend the Wings Over Wanaka air show. He also produced a rare device, that fooled everyone as to its purpose. John Morrison has his 1918 Briscoe warranted and Gavin Welch drove to the meeting in his 1913 Model T pickup. David Oliver produced a large picture of a Le Zebre single cylinder for which he hoped to find a new home. Although not strictly Veteran, Cedric Pegrum mentioned the enjoyable time he had on the recent Highland Fling event. Martin Seay brought his immaculate 1928 Indian and side car along. Martin had been plagued by idling issues, but solved this by moving the carburettor butterfly a few thou sideways on its shaft. That's it for this month.

Vintage Notes First, a correction. Last month I said Bob Pickering was working on his Plymouth which had ‘tinworm’. What Bob is actually working on is his International truck. His Plymouth is running fine and certainly has no rust. Sorry Bob. The Dewhurst’s and the Firth’s recently did a slow trip around East Cape and in Gisborne we spent a little time in the Gisborne Museum of Transport where there were a couple of Commer trucks that Norm wanted to look at with a view of acquiring them for his grandson Ryan as a restoration project. At least one of them has now been transported back to Auckland. This museum is a ‘must see’ for anyone going through Gisborne. Both extensive and diverse, so allow several hours. Richard Green has had the head off his Rolls and was telling of getting the worn valve guides out. A couple of them were jammed in so tightly he was fearful of breaking something, but was successful in the end, new ones being available from the UK. The central lubricating system was not functioning but on removal of the mudguards he found the pipework had been crushed. Ray Crombach spoke of his several Chryslers and a Packard. It sounds like a very interesting collection and I for one would love to see them. After several attempts to repair a leaking water-jacket on his ’29 Chevrolet, Neville Holland still has a slight weep, but as it is an original motor he is reluctant to pull it out yet again. Neil Lucas has a ’29 Essex coach which he says it’s way beyond repair, having sat out in the weather for far too long, but she is now under cover, so can now spend the rest of her days in comfort. Neil Bieleski has been having trouble getting decent brakes on his Renault. They never were up to much, but Richard Green made some suggestions which Neil thinks will be helpful. Wayne Roberts is collecting bits for his Velie ‘Irishman project’ and has just scored an authentic light switch and a couple of tail lights. He has decided on a Boat Tail Roadster design and is looking forward to getting into his new shed, which is under way at the moment. Oh, and Carrie says there is work being done on the house too. Note that June’s Vintage Section meeting is scheduled for 12 th June, as the AGM has our normal spot.
Murray & Penny Firth Bedding in the linings on Drum Brakes The linings on mechanical cam-actuated drum brakes need to make uniform overall contact to achieve maximum efficiency. For cars without selfcompensation, or some form of individual shoe adjustment it’s necessary to take more care to bed in new linings. I thought I would jot down the method I was shown years ago and used with great success. It involves fixing a short strip of emery paper to the inside of the brake drum, the width of the shoe and about 4 to 6 inches long. This can be done with contact adhesive or double-sided tape etc. After the brakes have been completely slackened off, refit the drum and replace the road wheel.

Vintage Notes While rotating the wheel, carefully tighten up the brake adjustment until the emery paper makes contact. Continue to rotate the wheel and gently advance the adjustment as the cutting progresses. The reason for using a short strip is so you can compare by feel the cutting on each shoe. After a few cuts, remove the drum and inspect where cutting is occurring. Continue until 100% of both linings are being “wiped” by the emery paper and the bedding will be perfect. Vacuum up all traces of dust and remove the emery paper and any remaining adhesive with thinners. Use 40 to 60 grit emery cloth, depending on the hardness of the linings used. Owners will be rewarded with greatly improved performance of their vintage brakes. Richard Green

Chairman’s Report: Well what a year we've just had due to Covid-19, although not as bad as the year before. There were lockdowns for Auckland that affected the running of our Branch as well as the whole of the Auckland area. It was worrying from one week to the next that we could go into yet another lock-down. The Branch AGM did go ahead but at a date later than normal. Anyway, we did manage to run most of our Branch events. All the sections: Veteran, Vintage, Motorcycle, Library and Commercial all resumed their meetings. Our Club Captain, Lynda Spicer plotted most of the monthly club runs which finished at interesting venues and the Midweek Tourers resumed their monthly runs. Unfortunately in July I slipped on mud in our garden and broke my femur and needed a titanium rod to be inserted, but fortunately some of my hospitalization and recovery was during one of the lockdown periods. It stopped me in my tracks, but thank goodness for computers and cellphones, being able to keep in touch with everyone. Tracey and I were due to go to the National AGM in Whanganui but couldn't as we were in yet another lockdown. The Hunua 100 weekend was again very successful, thanks to Glenn & Marion Morris, plotting a great rally. The Auckland Motorcycle Rally celebrated its 40 th anniversary and was plotted Alan Greenslade with a very good attendance. The New Year started off with the Kaiaua fish ‘n chip run and we all looked forward to a lockdown-free zone for 2021. Another successful Veteran Rally was plotted by John Stokes, but we then again went into lockdown and this sadly meant the cancellation of the National Motorcycle Rally in the Wairarapa. Then the lockdown was lifted 5 days later, so 26 Auckland members decided to go to Masterton and do our own thing, as accommodation had already been paid. A number of other Branch members from around the country turned up as well and enjoyed 10 days rallying around the Wairarapa. Tracey and I attended the National Executive Meeting in Wellington in March. Lynda and I manned the Branch stand at the Brit & Euro Classic Car show at Pakuranga which had 800 plus vehicles on show and over 10,000 spectators. I would like to thank these members who have helped in running the Branch this past year: Dave & Barbara Allbon who keep our gardens looking great, Leo Fowler and Charlotte Bovis our bar managers, Pat Campbell and Barbara Allbon who help Shaaran Price with the Club Night suppers and Jack Nazer and his helpers who are sorting and tidying up the spares and the Barn. Also, a special thank you goes to our hard working Bulletin Editor Val Ball who does such a great job. Finally I would like to thank my fellow Committee members for their time and effort over this past year in running the Branch: Tracey Winterbottom, Alan & Shaaran Price, John Stokes, Robin Elliott, Warwick Darrow, Ian Hubbard, Lynda Spicer and Vice Chairman Don Green. Sadly a few will be standing down at

This means that come the AGM, we will need members to put their names forward to come on the Committee and help run the Branch. Remember that this is your Club and we do need you to help keep the Branch going. I have enjoyed my 4th year being Chairman and as I am 99% recovered from my broken leg, I am really looking forward to getting out and about and actually taking part in events this year, rather than being a spectator. Motorcycle Report: Wow, remember when we were kids and a year seemed to take forever to go round, but nowadays it seems we have only just had the New Year’s Day run and then there are adverts saying Christmas is coming. Last year we were hit with Covid-19 and this curtailed a lot of Branch events. Luckily our Branch's Annual Auckland Motorcycle Rally went ahead in November, when Alan Greenslade and team put on a very good rally that had 55 entries. The overall winner was member Alan Macey riding his Norton Commando. Alan says the plotting of this years rally is all under control. We were then hit with more Covid-19 lockdowns in the New Year and this effected the National Motorcycle Rally, which was cancelled a week before it was due to commence, but a few days later the shutdown was lifted. The 26 Auckland members who had entered said as we'd paid for our accommodation, why not still go to the Wairarapa and do our own thing. Under the leadership of Peter Alderdice we went to Masterton and to our surprise others from all over the country did the same, with nearly 70 motorcycles going out on organised runs from Saturday to the following Thursday. Many thanks to the Wairarapa National Motorcycle Rally team, who gave us a great time. The Motorcycle meetings are still getting good turnouts and we have been treated to some excellent speakers, even during our cut short year of meetings. I would like to thank all of those who have helped me with the running of our section meetings, especially Jack Clark my right hand man taking down the meeting notes and to your Club Captain, Lynda Spicer (my better half) who provides us with those great end of meeting afternoon teas. At the May Motorcycle meeting I was re-elected as Co-Ordinator, which is my 24th term, so thank you fellow members for your support over these many years. Martin Spicer

Annual Reports Contd.. Veteran Report: The section has held up well over the last year despite Covid-19. Meeting attendance has bean reasonable to very good with attendances varying from about twelve to about twenty five. It's good to see members from North Shore and Wellsford Branches in regular attendance and occasionally visitors from other places as well. A wide variety of parts, tools and publications have been produced for examination and discussion. The Annual Veteran Run was well attended by todays standards. Finding traffic free roads is still a problem. I may search for a different location next year, but that inevitably entails more work. It's been encouraging to see members driving their Veteran vehicle to the section meetings, during and in one case after daylight saving time. On several occasions Monty Scarborough has made the trip from Kaiaua to attend. Barry Robert and Brian Belcher who are both 90 plus are regulars. Thanks should be given to Roslyn Lowe who organises the afternoon tea. John Stokes
Maintenance Report: Maintenance jobs, such as formica breakages from the ends of the tables reglued, cistern leakages fixed and kitchen cupboard repairs have been carried out at the Clubrooms. Broken Clubrooms chairs continue to require fixing on a regular basis. The hedge & gully trap in the back yard are also attended to regularly. The hose reel at the back of the Clubrooms has been reattached as it had been mysteriously pulled off the wall. Additional aluminium extrusion has been added in the mezzanine level and new photos hung. The bar fridge has had its annual inspection and the glass sterilizer had an overhaul through the year. Warwick Darrow painted some window frames and the front door. He is in the process of organising painters to paint the exterior of the Clubrooms. The toilet area is about to have a makeover and should be completed in the near future. We must thank Barbara & David Allbon for the wonderful job they do keeping the gardens at the Clubrooms neat and tidy. It has been a pleasure working at the Clubrooms over the last three years, but feel it is time to call it quits as I come to the end of my third time on Committee, having served almost 20 years in total. Annual Reports Contd.. Social Convenor & New Member Liaison Report: It has been a pleasure to supply suppers at Club Nights. My thanks to the ladies who have helped serve the tea and coffee. At present, I am labelling some of the memorabilia with short messages to outline the history of items. The Annual Christmas Pot Luck dinner drew a large crowd who enjoyed the evening. The Committee agreed to supply a ham on the bone, which I heated through the afternoon, to supplement the great variety of dishes everyone supplied. With the extra sections using the Clubrooms regularly, it can be a bit of a mission keeping the pantry cupboards stocked with tea, coffee, sugar etc. and, also stock of detergents, soaps, hand towels, toilet rolls, sanitizers and fresheners. The nibbles and non-alcoholic drinks in the bar have been purchased from Gilmours regularly and hopefully, I have managed to keep everyone happy with the variety we have in stock. Leo Fowler who, along with Charlotte Bovis, is one of our Bar Managers. Leo takes care of the alcohol purchasing for the bar. Charlotte is on leave after the birth her baby boy. Prior to this she did a bar duty once a month, even though she is not on Committee. A big thank you to all these people. Lockdowns for the Covid-19 continued off and on from last year and I continued to undertake sanitizing all tables, benches, door handles, taps etc. I phoned many members who did not have family close by to organise their food shopping during these times. It was a pleasure talking to these folk and I was pleased that they were dealing with the lockdown well. We have had a steady number of people applying for membership throughout the year. With Covid lockdowns etc., we have not had the usual amount of regular events to offer and I’m sure, like me, you are all looking forward a year without lockdowns! Having served this Branch as Treasurer, Social Convenor and Entertainment officer for nine years prior to this three year stint as Social Convenor, I feel it is time for new blood and am willing to stand down to make way for fresh ideas on Committee. I wish newcomers to the Committee well, along with new members to the Branch. Shaaran Price

Annual Reports Contd.. Club Captain’s Report: Is it really 12 months since I did my last Annual report? At least this year was a better one than 2020 with us only experiencing a couple of very short, sharp lockdowns within Auckland. A few annual events were cancelled like the hugely popular Art Deco Rally and the bi-annual National Motorcycle Rally. However, the branches that had originally organised these two events still provided ‘mini’ events at the due time for people that could attend and enjoy, as many people had booked and paid for accommodation well in advance. Thanks to the Branches who steered these much reduced events. Many of you have enjoyed attending out of town events this past 12 months, a vast improvement from the previous year. I have had another enjoyable year of getting out and about to various monthly runs, rallies and other functions , plus meeting some new people into the bargain. We started our year (out of lockdown) with a celebratory 4 th July Independence Day Kiwi Style themed dinner at the Clubrooms. The theme was red white and blue, with 76 people in attendance. Apart from enjoying another great evening meal catered for by myself and very ably assisted by Debbie Ballantyne, we had two competitions during the course of the evening. The first one was the ‘best dressed’ to the theme and there was an array of different interpretations, from Cowboy ‘n Gumboots to Uncle Sam. We had a very sophisticated way of finding the winner, using the clapometer and noise machine (yes the audience). Uncle Sam was the winner and John Morrison was presented with a prize. The other competition required some design flare using what had been provided in a bag for groups of 6. They had balloons, silver foil, crepe paper, chenille pipe cleaners, feathers, coloured paper ribbons and the most treasured commodity of lockdown a roll of toilet paper. They had to create something that related to Covid-19. The winner was Linda Waldron’s daughter, dressed as a nurse, her uniform created from toilet paper, and having balloons and things surrounding her depicting Covid-19. A whole lot of laughter was heard throughout the night and some wonderful creations made and enjoyed by all, some serious, some naughty! Some excellent Rallies have been plotted by past winners including the Vintage Muster, PV PWV P60 & P80, Motorcycle Rally, Hunua 100 and Veteran. Some lovely quiet roads have been covered, some new roads discovered, beautiful scenery enjoyed and some serious rallying taking place. We have two showcase events during the year. The Hunua 100 where the majority of entrants are cars and the Auckland Motorcycle Rally the following month. The Hunua 100 in October was another success, starting the weekend off with a wonderful garden party on the Saturday and 46 people attending the Saturday night dinner held at the Clubrooms. An excellent rally plotted by Glenn and Marion Morris, culminating with the prize giving dinner for around the same numbers as the night before at the Remuera Club. This year’s annual Motorcycle Rally, the 40th, toured the hiways and biways of Franklin. The start and finish was at Ramarama Hall and so too was lunch. After last year’s caterer not turning up for the prizegiving dinner, I pulled out all the

Annual Reports Contd.. stops in providing a sumptuous buffet dinner. There was lots of laughter and tales being told and a great evening finished off a very successful event. Alan Greenslade and his team provided an excellent rally for everyone to enjoy. I would like to thank all the plotters, marshals and helpers who have given their time in providing some excellent rallies for you to enjoy, whether you are a really competitive member or simply love getting into or onto your vehicle and going for an enjoyable drive. We have certainly provided something for everyone. Club runs have enjoyed some different events, ranging from a ‘Posh High Tea’, at my farm, after the Ladies run plotted by Annette Foot. We have visited Glenbrook railway at Christmas, the Steampunk art gallery “Altered State”, Fish ‘n Chip runs and very recently the first Gymkhana event held in Taupaki, organised by Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine, at a member’s property. Again, thanks to these members who have helped out with our monthly events. Finding somewhere different to finish is becoming a bit of a challenge, but I do have some great places planned to visit in the next 12 months. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, such as Clubroom maintenance, garden upkeep, finance, licences, attending Executive meetings and National AGM meetings, runs and rallies being plotted or overseen and all this is done on a voluntary basis. Many hours each month is spent by your hardworking Committee to ensure you have a brilliant Branch to come to and enjoy the events we put on. To that end, I would like to thank my fellow Committee members for their untiring work, Tracey Winterbottom, Ian Hubbard, Don Green, John Stokes, Shaaran & Alan Price, Robin Elliott, Warwick Darrow and Martin Spicer. Also, my thanks to Chris Wood and his Library team, Leo Fowler & Charlotte Bovis our Bar Managers, Pat Campbell and Barbara Allbon who help Shaaran each club night with supper, David & Barbara Allbon for keeping our gardens looking wonderful all year round and to Val Ball our Bulletin Editor who sadly retires in June next year after giving us 18 years of service. I would also like to pass on my personal thanks to Martin, who promotes this Branch at every opportunity, giving up weekends to attend exhibitions for motorcycles or cars where he can wave the banner for the Branch. Also, for the great speakers he brings into the Motorcycle section. My thanks also to Robin Elliott, who has found some great speakers for the monthly Club Nights. As the years go by, the job of finding new speakers gets harder and harder but I am sure that more exciting speakers will be found for the next 12 months. In order to keep you safe, we the Committee, are still requesting that you either sign the register or scan the Covid-19 tracer on your APP each time you come to the Clubrooms and to sanitize your hands. Although we have seen the start of the Covid-19 vaccination becoming available, and the Australian & Cook Island bubbles open up, we must still be vigilant. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 4th year as Club Captain and look forward to the next 12 months of what this Branch has to offer. I look forward to seeing you out and about Linda Spicer

Annual Reports Contd.. Commercial Report: The last twelve months have been firmly etched in all our minds. Our lives were virtually turned upside down by the Covid pandemic and several of our meetings were affected. Once things settled down, we didn’t quite revert to the norm. If anything, our meetings became less patronised, so much so that my wife Pat is imploring me to retire as co-ordinator of the section. I don’t want to, but travelling across to the Clubrooms at Penrose, to host a meeting of just two Commercial buffs and on occasion sitting there on my own, doesn’t endear me to my good wife. There have been several section stalwarts retire from active participation over the last couple of years, and Hans Dorbeck’s passing was a big blow, but I know we still have people among us who have a passion for commercial vehicles and with their support, the section can surely bounce back. Vintage Report: Just over a year since inception the Vintage Section meetings has proven it’s worth. Apart from a little disruption from Covid-19, we have met regularly every month and the conversations have been both interesting and entertaining. Often, mystery objects of a mechanical nature are passed round the table for us to try and identify. Progress on various restorations and repairs are reported on. The accumulated wisdom around the table is often of assistance when one of us is struggling and the camaraderie of a group of like-minded people is most refreshing. Murray & Penny Firth
