Chairman’s Report It is with great relief that I am writing this report. A number of weeks ago I was in hospital suffering from Influenza A virus, mild Pneumonia, a bad chest infection and the worst of all, I had blood clots that went from my left leg up to my lungs making massive clots covering both lungs. It all went very wrong for me and by the 6th day in hospital, in the early hours of the morning my breathing had got so bad that the Doctors put me on 100% pure oxygen, which was like wearing a scuba mask. Unfortunately it got worse and they thought a clot had travelled further from my lung to my heart and then my stats all dropped. Panic stations! It was scary to see I was surrounded by 10 doctors and nurses but it was a dire situation and then to be asked if things go wrong do you want us to resuscitate you? Well let me think, yes please! They gave me a blood clot busting drug which is a very dangerous drug to use because of many other complicated side effects it can create, but my situation did not give them an option. Once they gave me the drug it worked incredibly fast and to the amazement of the doctors with no side effects. I was breathing properly again within 15 minutes and for the first time in a week I was asking for food and managing to get some sleep. After another week recovering and progressing so rapidly well, I was sent home. However, because of all this, it meant I was not able to go down to Greymouth for the National Executive Meeting & AGM, which was a shame, as Lynda was going to come with me. We were going to spend time in Christchurch, then get the Trans Alpine train over to Greymouth and back, then back home on the Monday. The airline and Trans Alpine have been very accommodating with the situation and we will be able to do this later in the year, or early next year instead. Tracey Winterbottom went to the National AGM on behalf of our Branch, so I will be interested to hear how it all went. Right, back to the Branch. John Stokes was pleased at the big turn out for the Veteran Section meeting in August with 25 in attendance. The meeting went well and had many interesting talks. So if you are into Veterans, do go along and join John at these meetings. Next up was the monthly Motorcycle meeting that I was able to run, with around 60 members present and all seemed glad to see me back at the Clubrooms. At the meeting we held the Cecil Light Restoration Trophy, with 2 entries producing a very close finish. Paul Downie with his 1937 500cc Army Norton 16H won by 2 votes from Brian King’s 1938 500cc BSA. Guest speakers at the September Motorcycle meeting will be our new member, 18yr old Ben Creemers and his dad Rob. They both race classic motorcycles from Rob’s collection and will be bringing along their Brough Superior, the only one being raced in the world. The Mid week Tourers went to another great finishing venue. The Commercial Section, although small still have entertaining meetings so if you like commercials do go along and join them. Club and new members night we had new members, George Oliver who has a couple of Suzuki motorcycles and Graham Waters who has 2 Norton’s, a Triumph, a Honda and a MGBGT. Our guest speaker was Shane Price who brought along 3 of his Penny Farthing cycles and told us about his passion of vintage and classic bicycles, he did a great talk.

Chairman’s Report Contd... The final Branch event for August was our club run which was also the VCC Daffodil Rally for Cancer, Tracey Winterbottom plotted this run which finished at Edmund Hillary Retirement Village, Remuera. Coming Up: During October we have our Annual Hunua 100 Rally, which Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine have plotted a great rally, so get your entries in now. The entry form was in August’s Bulletin. Well that’s all for this month, so keep those 2-3 and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer
Club Captain’s Report Well, we are officially into the first month of Spring and look forward to longer and warmer days and hopefully a lot less rain. John Stokes’ Veteran meetings are going from strength to strength and are covering some really interesting topics and looking at some great bits and bobs. August’s Motorcycle section meeting had good attendance and Martin ran the Cecil Light Restoration Trophy. Congratulations to the winner, Paul Downie with his Norton. Midweek Tourers continue with good attendance. The Motorcycle section’s rally had to be postponed. The day lived up to the name - Wet Leg Run and yes! it did rain so hard on the day that this has been postponed to September 15th. Club Night had a good attendance and what a thoroughly interesting talk was given by Shane Price on his passion for Penny Farthing bicycles and seeing 3 of his collection. Thank you Shane. The August club run was the National Daffodil Day Cancer run which was plotted by Tracey and Stephen Winterbottom. A fun rally with clues having to be found and photographed. Thank you to everyone who participated in this run and the feedback from the Edmund Hillary Retirement Village where it ended for the second year has been wonderful. All the residents had a lovely time looking over the vehicles, riding in some of the cars and of course some going out on the charabanc. Please remember to get your Hunua 100 entry forms into Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine as soon as possible – it’s not that far away. Labour weekend will soon creep up on us. If you cannot enter then see if you can help in another way, at the Saturday garden party, being a marshal, or helping at lunch. All offers will be gratefully accepted. Veteran Notes The August meeting was very well attended, with over twenty five people present. It was very good to see both Bruce & Wilma Madgwick present and also Pauline Scarborough, who had accompanied Monty for the afternoon. Doug Hamilton had made the trip from Mahurangi and North Shore members David Lane and Tim Edney were also present. We had an apology from Mike Loosemore who is away and Bryan Belcher who is unwell. Barry Birchall is writing a book on early Auckland car dealers, there were many, probably explained by the number of ephemeral manufacturers in the early days. Doug Hamilton has started on his 1911 Cadillac. Apparently he has the remains of two cars, one ex New Zealand and one ex USA. Doug displayed one of the brake bands. Russel Vincent is working on his 1905 single cylinder Cadillac and has made a new exhaust valve and has adapted a piston to fit the bore. John Morrison has got the starter out of the 1916 Briscoe he brought from the Woodgate estate. Phil Henley has finally got compliance on all the work on his 1913 Mitchell and he now just needs a registration and WOF. Michael Pellow is still trying to fire his Rover single. Tim Edney is taking his Alldays and Oinions to the Pioneer Motoring Groups event in Arrowtown, whileMonty Scarborough is still resolving the valve issue with the 1913 Model T. Although not veteran related, we were told a second Duesenberg has arrived in New Zealand. So that's it for this month. John Stokes

Library Notes It has been a relatively quiet month in terms of numbers of books added to our collection, however the team has made good use of this time by focussing on tidying up our database and re-arranging the books, magazines etc. to better effect. The scarcity of shelf space has been relieved, at least for the present, with the arrival of a new cabinet which will be situated in the entrance foyer at the rear of the clubrooms. The extra shelf capacity it will provide and allow us over the next few weeks to re-organise some of the more over-crowded shelving in the main Library. It will make a significant difference.

Carrying on the theme of our recent notes, one of our treasured gems that some members may not be aware of, is the Frank McClare collection of photographs of club-eligible cars, taken mostly in New Zealand with some also in Australia. Frank was a most respected and well remembered Branch member who from as far back as the early ‘60’s assiduously photographed and recorded old cars at rallies, gymkhanas and other vintage events. This was in the black and white days, and Frank developed, printed and catalogued every photo, meticulously arranging them by make and date of vehicle for display in what is now a collection of 23 wonderful folders. In total there must be something like 6000 photos in those folders. As a record of the historic vehicles which have been the making of the vintage vehicle movement in this part of the world it is almost unique and it is available for viewing anytime the Library is open. Motorcycle Notes We arrived at the club rooms at 1:30pm, the weather was sunny and we had 12 shiny motorcycles parked out in the rear car park. The meeting started just after 2:30pm, Jack Clark sent his apologies as he was visiting family in Christchurch. We had around 60 members in attendance, with one visitor, being Peter Alderdice’s neighbour, Dave Wakefield. I informed the meeting that member Ernie Williams is still in the North Shore hospital following a heart attack. He has had a new pacemaker and two other implants fitted. I’m sure Ernie would appreciate a friendly face to visit him, please phone Charlotte for more information on (09)410 6294. I then advised what happened to me 3 weeks prior, regarding my blood clots around my lungs which were so serious they asked me would I liked to be resuscitated if things went wrong? Well let me see, yes please. Luckily everything went well for me. I spent two weeks in hospital and was glad to get back home, anyway things are getting better every day for me. Reports: The Wet Leg Run was cancelled due to very wet weather, no don’t laugh! The run was to finish at motorcycle champion Paul Pavletich’s home to view his large bike collection. I have spoken with Paul and we shall now be going to see him on the 15th September, departing the BP Service Centre on the Southern Motorway, Drury at 12 noon. Coming Up: Saturday 14 September, Motorcycle Meeting. Guest speakers will be Ben Creemers and his dad Rob. They will be bringing along their racing Brough Superior, the only one being raced in the world, don’t miss this meeting. General Business: Peter Alderdice talked about the Rubber Duckie Rally on the 21st September. Peter has around 8 riders who will be leaving the BP Service Centre, Southern Motorway, Drury on the Friday morning to ride to New Plymouth, then the rally is on the Saturday. On the Sunday Peter has places of interest to visit and the group will come home on the Monday morning with other visits on the way home. So if you’re thinking about doing the Rubber Duckie and would like to ride with Peter’s group, give Peter a call on 021 743 906. Cecil Light Restoration Trophy: We had 2 entries—Brian King with his 1938 500cc BSA B22 sidecar outfit and Paul Downie with his 1937 500cc Army Norton 16 H. Brian and Paul spent about 20minutes each telling us the story of their Motorcycle restorations and of problems they had on the way, both were very interesting. They then both went out into the car park to start up their motorcycles and all the members went to cast their eyes over the 2 motorcycles. The members came back and then voted on which motorcycle they liked. I counted the votes, which turned out to be very close. Paul’s Norton won by 2 votes. Secretary’s Notes Watch for your subscription renewal notices coming soon and remember to get them back to Christchurch in time to get your discount. August saw the Club hold it’s Annual General Meeting, hosted by the West Coast Branch in Greymouth. A great weekend and see elsewhere for my full report, but good news on some new events. Next year will see the Inaugural National Vintage Rally, being hosted jointly by Central Hawkes Bay and Hawkes Bay Branches. This will be an event not to be missed and is set for early September 2020. The second, first time event, is an “Irishman” style event, open to Vintage and Veteran vehicles and being hosted by Bay of Plenty Branch. It will be on over Anzac weekend and is centred around Taihape. Much of the rally is going to be over private farmland. Titled “Highland Frolic”, watch for more details. Remember both us as a Branch and the National Club have face book pages, it only takes a minute to go on line and like these pages and stay in contact with events, what’s happening around the 36 branches and also read interesting articles from all around the globe. From the Committee table – a new bookcase has been purchased to house “coffee table” books. The Vintage Muster next year will be for Vintage Vehicles only. Tracey Winterbottom

Commercial Notes Movements from within our section recently: The Dorbeck ex Education Department OB Bedford bus has found a new home with a collector from the lower North Island and Hans’ Husky has sustained some damage in an altercation with a post. Murray Firth enthralled us at our August meeting, with his recollections of driving school buses to and from Piha in the day. Colin Shoebridge has the motor out of his ’37 Chevy pick-up trying to rectify, mixing water with oil. He reckons he’s nearly there! Recently I was asked if I might be able to identify a grainy copy of an old light truck, printed onto an A4 sheet of paper. I wasn’t able to of course, but subsequently learned it was a Kissel Kar so, given its rarity, (there are reputed to be just three trucks left in the world), I resolved to learn more. The Kissel Motor Car Company was founded by Louis Kissel and his four sons in Hartford Wisconsin in June 1906. They built high quality cars, fire trucks, hearses, taxi-cabs and trucks. The trucks were ¾, 1,2,3,4, and 5 ton models and during WW1, they built trucks and ambulances for the allies (and U.S. forces, after their entry into the fray). Kissel produced a 3 ton F.W.D. model, under licence from the Wisconsin based Four Wheel Drive Company, for the U.S. War Department. Kissel prospered after the war but with stiff competition and the great depression, mounting losses and an attempted hostile takeover by New Era Motors’ president Archie Andrews, the Kissel’s were forced into bankruptcy in November 1930. There are thought to be around 200 of the 35,000 automobiles the Kissel Kar Company produced surviving today, along with just one FWD Model B truck. Famous personalities to have a penchant for them, included Fatty Arbuckle and Amelia Earheart. Keep M Rolling John Campbell

Mid Week Tourers Last month’s run finished at member Mike Courtney’s home in Taupaki, where he has two large sheds that any of us would have given an eye for. As for the contents, well, sufficient to say that he has a very catholic appreciation of vintage vehicles. From the ex Don White Sizaire Naudin to racing Austin Sevens and on to PW classics. He and daughter Kirsten certainly have a flair for competition motoring in all it’s forms. But they don’t stop there, two others being restored were a Bradford van and a 30 cwt Morris Commercial motor caravan. Mike is currently whittling his fleet down and has a very nice veteran Overland for sale, along with the ex Phil Ornstein factory spec’ed Hillman rally car (with full provenance). Also in one shed is an extensive collection of what I would call “Penny Arcade “ games, or “Pinball” machines. Nostalgia, even though many of them are now dollars rather than pennies. Our thanks to Mike and Billie for their hospitality. The route took us on a short scenic run in the Waitakere’s towards Bethells Beach, then back to Taupaki. The early morning rain might have deterred some, but we still had about a dozen participants and the rain cleared up soon after we left the start. Several out for the first time mid-week, Martin Cooper (Waitemata) has just retired and hopes to be a regular and a nice circa 1930 Rolls Royce was also out for the first time. Regular George Mihaljevich was absent, getting a tune-up (for him, not the car.) Keep it up George and we look forward to seeing you next month. Not a Mid-Weeker, but once an Auckland member and prominent in motor sport, Jim Baird will be remembered by some. Sadly, he passed away in Patea on the 19th August. Our condolences to his family. Our Daffodil Day collection raised $40.00, which would have been from those who were unable to attend on Daffodil Day and has been added to the Branch total. Thank you, everyone. August Club Night A small but very appreciative crowd attended the August Club Night to hear cycling enthusiast and historian Shane Price talk about all things Penny Farthing. Shane had 3 of his bikes on display, one being an original Penny Farthing from the late 1800s. Shane entertained all with his stories of touring NZ on a Penny Farthing and competing in Penny Farthing Cycle Races and World champs. He also had plenty of advice on how to ride without going head first over the handlebars. On Friday 23 August Shane rode down Queen Street to commemorate 150 years since the first NZ Cycle ride down the same street. Some of you may have seen him on “The Project� that night. The lucky door prize was won by John Morrison. If you have any contacts, friends or family with interests or stories that may be of interest for Club Nights, please let Shaaran Price or myself know, we are always looking for interesting guest speakers. VCC Daffodil Rally Our Daffodil Day Rally saw 32 vehicles meet at Papakura and at least a further 4 meet us at the finish. We tried something a little different, with a “Digital Scavenger Hunt” The finish was the Edmund Hillary Retirement Village, Remuera and we left you to make your own route there and tasked you with taking 10 photos along the way. It seemed everyone enjoyed themselves and most entrants managed to take their 10 photos. It was possible to use different locations for the photos and it was great to see the various interpretations people had for their photos. An Air New Zealand photo for instance had some people travelling via the airport to get a sign off the side of a building while others managed to find advertising posters, and one managed to come across an Air NZ branded car and snap a photo! Snapping your navigator on a playground swing was an easy one for all, even if you had to ask a child politely if you could have a turn now, isn’t that right Brad? Water as a subject got many variations, from water bottles to my intent which was the sea. The best one being Russel and Jocelyn Mc Alpine about to drive through water with grand daughter Pearl posing on the running board. The Charabanc delighted many residents at the end with a couple of circuits of the village with passengers on board. The Retirement Village staff and residents made us most welcome, with afternoon tea and a welcoming “goodie bag”. Guests from both the Ford 10 Club and the Jowett Car Club boosted our numbers and we raised $730 for Daffodil Day. The Committee will top this number up, to be confirmed at our next committee meeting. The winners on the day were: 1st 2nd 3rd

Vero International Festival of Motoring
January 17 to 22, 2021 Register your interest on the website, check out the Facebook page. Preparation continues for the Vero Festival of Motoring. There will be one day where there will be the opportunity for one day rallies in classes. There will be separate rallies on this day for Veteran, Vintage and all PV classes and perhaps Motorcycles and Commercials. This will be the only competitive day and the competition will be in the form of a timed section. Catering is still being investigated, and the entry fee is still to be set but the Committee are quite sure it will be very affordable. Tony Haycock is still on the Committee, but due to work commitments taking him out of the country for considerable periods, he has stepped down as Rally Director and fellow Committee member Greg Terrill will be taking on the Director’s role. At this point there are no plans for an “overseas guest�. Some motels are now booked out and suggest you book accommodation if you are thinking of attending and have not yet made any bookings.

Delegate’s Report In August I attended both the National AGM and the Executive Meeting, hosted by the West Coast Branch. I shall leave a full set of reports in the clubrooms for those interested, the below summary covers of some key points. AGM—The current 3 Management Committee were re- elected, Tony Bartlett, Ed Boyd and George Kear. All other positions did not require an election. 119 Auckland members exercised their voting right. We are the second largest Branch and we have one of the lowest voting percentages at 19%. There were 20 Branches with percentages in the 20’s or 30’s. No notices of motion or remits. Subs remain at their current level. Beaded Wheels—the trial continues for on line subscriptions, it does not have a huge uptake. Electric classics—as more classics are being converted to electric, discussions are starting to develop over how FIVA will classify these. Speed Steward—looking to introduce an open book test for obtaining your Historic Racing Licence. Cut off date for historic racing will move to 1965 to cater for early single Formula V cars. Vero Insurance—the VCC continues to significantly benefit financially from Vero Insurance, remember to quote your full membership number when obtaining and renewing your policies. Comms Director—not continuing, but managed now by Kaaren Smylie, Tony Haycock and Melissa Holm. Continue to send items of interest through to comms@vcc.org.nz for Facebook. John L Goddard Trophy—awarded this year to Murray Thoms (Bay of Plenty) for his memorable journey in his 1917 Dodge M 30 Roadster. Branding and Logo—as part of the ongoing work around changing our image and branding, Diane Quarrie presented a new logo and tag line. It is very much a draft, but this is exciting as we look to the future of the Club. The plan is for more work on this and then have something for us to bring back to the Branch for feedback before final approvals at next years AGM. Strategic Review—Gaynor Terrill presented an update on our Strategic Intent. Progress continues and there is still plenty for us all to think about around how we ensure our survival as a Club, with lots of Branches making changes to how they encourage new members and keep people interested. Executive Meeting—Health and Safety—a reminder to use our checklist guidelines, particularly for rallies, there was discussion over liability and need and the Act. It is prudent to use your common sense and follow the guidelines provided in the Branch manual. Further review will be at the March Executive Meeting. National Vintage Rally—next year Central Hawkes Bay and Hawkes Bay will host the first National Vintage Rally, to be held in September 2020 and it is hoped to become an annual event. Vero Festival of Motoring—updates will continue to come through, VIC renewals and new member packs will get flyers. Budget as presented was approved. Delegate’s Report Contd... after much discussion the remit was passed. This will allow a Notice of Motion to be assessed by the Management Committee and then the Executive have the opportunity to discuss both the Notice of Motion and the assessment addressing any favourable or unfavourable implications. The Notice of Motion will be accepted as currently presented by the Executive or resolve to defer subject to a minuted course of action before reconsideration. National Rallies 2021 National Motorcycle Rally – Wairarapa 2021 AGM – Canterbury No bids at this stage for 2022 Easter Rallies in either Island Highland Fling – this is a rally for Veteran and Vintage vehicles and is an Irishman style event. The first one is being organized by Alistair Jones and Kaaren Smylie (Bay of Plenty Branch) and will be held over Anzac weekend 2020. Again it is envisaged that Branches will take up the organization and it becomes an annual event and does not have to be held at the same time. Bay of Plenty Branch request to change their name to Vintage and Classic Car Club - Not carried at this stage, majority felt it better to wait given the work happening before the next executive meeting around branding. Draft Constitution – accepted, Branches can choose to use if they wish. Otago and Manawatu Branch constitution amendments approved by Hon. Management Secretary. Charity National Day—this is the VCC National Day for promoting ourselves first and then support for a national Charity. Voted to continue to support the Cancer Society for a further 3 years.
