Chairman’s Report Well here we are with only 6 months to go to Christmas, doesn’t time fly? The month of June started of with Michael O’Kane’s Kick Start Motorcycle Rally, which started from Parrs Park, Glen Eden. Lynda and I and our grandson Riley went along for the drive where 10 motorcycles and 3 cars participated. The weather was like a summers day and an enjoyable drive through the Waitakere’s was had by all. Then it was John Stokes’ Veteran Section meeting which had a very good turn out of around 20 members. It sounds like it was an interesting meeting, so if your interest is in Veteran vehicles, do go along and join them. Next up was the Motorcycle meeting, or not. The speaker I had lined up for the meeting cancelled, so I decided to have a swap meet for the members only. It’s been years since we last had one and the outcome was quite good with a good turnout of sellers and buyers. The Mid Week Tourers again had a good turn out. John Campbell’s Commercial Section always have interesting meetings, so if your thing is trucks, ute’s or vans, do go along and join them. The Branch’s AGM was held on 27th June (Club Night) with a good turnout of members, including our three life members: Barry Robert, Norm Dewhurst and Alan Roberts. The election of officers for the incoming Committee saw me reelected as Chairman, Tracey Winterbottom Secretary, Ian Hubbard Treasurer, Don Green Vice Chairman, Lynda Spicer Club Captain, Alan & Shaaran Price and John Stokes as General Committee. After the meeting Warwick Darrow and Robin Elliott put their hands up for Committee. Barry Robert, after 19 years, as Librarian, stood down and Chris Wood has taken up the mantel. Thank you Barry for all those years of service to our Branch. Presentation of trophies and 25 and 35 year awards followed. Congratulations to all these worthy winners. Lynda Spicer presented potted plants to Val Ball (Editor of “The Bulletin”) and Jocelyn McAlpine (Russel’s “right hand lady”). The final presentation was to Russel McAlpine, who stood down from the Committee after seven years service as Vice Chairman. Saturday 20 July is the Motorcycle meeting and the guest speaker will be Chris Minnee. Chris is a helicopter pilot from Cambridge and does helicopter maintenance. He had a gas turbine jet engine which has gone past its sell by date and has spent 3 years building it into a motorcycle frame. This is now finished and Chris will be bringing it to the meeting, so if you want to see and hear a jet engine motorcycle start up at the Clubrooms, along with how Chris built it, do come along, all members welcome. Well that’s all for another month, so keep those 2, 3 and 4 wheels turning safely.

Club Captain’s Report Well Jack Frost has certainly arrived. We are seeing quite thick frosts on our farm and I don’t remember so many thick fogs early in the morning and at night. So, hoping this finds you all tucked up and warm. John Stokes’ Veteran meetings continue with good attendance and they cover really interesting topics at their meetings. So, if you are interested in Veterans, do come along and join John’s group who meet on the 2nd Saturday each month. Last month the Motorcycle section had a meeting with a difference. Their guest speaker let them down at the last minute and so Martin decided to hold a swap meet instead. By all accounts there were some great bargains to be had and it was pleasing to see a number of sellers and lots of buyers. The Midweek Tourers continue with good attendance. A number of our “car section” members ventured to the Irishman rally, starting in Fairlie, South Island. This year they had a spectacular rally as the area had had a good dumping of snow. It was excellent to see some video clips and photos coming through on my facebook feed from members down south. Unfortunately, Tracey and Stephen Winterbottom’s vehicle decided it needed a rest and a reshoeing, or rather a leaf-spring replaced. It didn’t stop them joining up with other people and finishing the rally. Finally, June ended with the Combined Club run which is where we and North Shore Branch have a shared event. This year it was our turn to plot the rally and Martin and I took them on some of the back roads between Papakura, Hunua and Clevedon. It was noted that it had been many years since some of the roads had been used and some roads were new ones for others. It ended back at the Clubrooms where afternoon tea was served with Lynda’s homemade Pumpkin soup, with rolls and some very yummy cakes which Shaaran Price had provided. It was great to have such a large attendance, 5 vehicles from North Shore and 14 cars from our Branch, plus 16 motorcycles. It was also great to see our newest and youngest member, Ben Creemers out for his first monthly run, not on his BSA but in his 1935 Pontiac which is unrestored. At the start of the run we asked the entrants to nominate their speed and the results are: Winner, Ken & Annette Foot, 2nd Gavin Welch and Sophie Zhao and 3rd Cedric Pegrum and Clarrie Ranby. Finally, our June Club Night was our AGM and it was very pleasing to see such a good turnout, some members I had not met before, so that is encouraging. I look forward to serving the Branch for the next twelve months as your Club Captain. If you have a run you would like to plot, then please give me a call. Don’t forget July’s club run is starting in Pakuranga which Ken & Annette Foot have plotted. August run is our National VCC Daffodil Day Rally for Cancer, plotted by Tracey and Stephen Winterbottom. Please put these dates in your diary. I look forward to seeing you out and about.

Veteran Notes The June meeting was very successful with over twenty people in attendance. Jim Boag is keeping the 1915 Humber running. Michael Pellow is still sorting the carburettor on the Rover single cylinder. The car was exhibited at a British Car Exhibition at “The Cloud” which was apparently funded by the city council. Alan Meredith is working on his 1903 La Coste & Battman. Phil Henley discussed an HCCA display at Ardmore, with the Veterans being given pride of place ahead of the MG and Triumph Clubs. Dennis Lowe showed us the original carburettor off his 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile. He has substituted a rotary hoe carburettor for easier driving control, quite important when you are dependant on tiller steering. Bryan Belcher reports that the book John Stewart commissioned detailing his father H H Stewart’s involvement with steam vehicles is now complete. Barry Birchall reported on a hard drive issued to all Branches, which contains much archival film, some of it going back to the 1920's. He has also helped in the compilation of a list of surviving single cylinder Cadillacs in New Zealand, some 28 of these cars appear to have survived. He is now checking serial numbers. He also discussed the very early 1903 period Model A Fords, apparently produced by the Dodge Brothers. David Oliver’s Ford T is still going okay, whilst John Morrison is getting new running board lino fitted to his 1913 Humberette. Wayne Welch is more involved with the Vintage Davis than the Veteran Model T at the moment and Gavin Welch is busy riding motorcycles. David Lane spoke of some security issues with older vehicles, as did Roy Sharman. David also mentioned issues around post period modifications to Veteran vehicles. Library Notes During the past year we have been donated a record number of books and manuals that were mostly new to us and have required a space on our shelves. Our records show we increased our books by 70 and manuals by 40 from donations and we purchased another 12 books, mostly to fill gaps or keep us up with recent publications when we see a bargain on Trade-me. Some will say we should have spent our money on shelving or a bookcase, but when a book such as “Racing Jaguar in NZ” comes up for sale, what do we do? We should have one in our NZ Section if we are to keep up “The best collection of NZ motoring books” we can find. As a temporary measure we have suggested a bookshelf in the hallway outside the Library or a bookcase with locked doors (where the notice board used to be) and we can only put this to the incoming Committee. Barry Robert (Retired Librarian) After 19 years of his responsibility for steering the development of our Library, it is appropriate to reflect on the progress that has been made under Barry’s leadership. During this time the extent of the Library has continued to grow, in the main with books, but also with all manner of historical material, such that today our Branch is the custodian of perhaps the most complete collection of automotive historical material to be found anywhere in the country. It has become a wonderful source of technical information for our members, providing historical material on all things automotive, and the ready availability of this material adds to the collective fulfilment of our hobby. Our Branch can be justly proud of this situation, but the fact is that we all owe Barry a great deal of gratitude. Without his work we would not be so lucky. His dedication to the success of the Library has been unfailing. Combined with his wisdom and his down to earth judgement and attention to detail he has set a great example for those of us who follow in his footsteps. Under his leadership he has built a capable and happy team who now look forward to caring for the Library into the future.

Motorcycle Notes Well I did try to get a speaker for our June meeting but the two I had in mind both couldn’t make it. I then emailed invitations to every petrol company in Auckland to come and tell us about their company and how the future looks for us petrol heads. I only received one reply and that was from Gull. Their man said he would like to come but he couldn’t do the June meeting as it was a family birthday, but maybe later in the year. So at the last minute I decided to have a swap meet. We haven’t had one for a number of years so the time was right. I arrived at the Clubrooms to find sellers and buyers already waiting in the car park. I opened the club rooms and I and others set up their wares inside. I had already presold dozens of books and manuals days before and the buyers turned up to collect them. I then sold around half of the rest of the stuff I had brought along. Others seemed to be selling their bits and pieces as well. Lynda couldn’t be there, but she sent along a large saucepan of pea and ham soup and sandwiches. Nancy and Brian Carkeek, along with Gillian Taylor served tea/coffee and soup to the members. We then had a very short meeting where I reported on the recent Kick Start Rally plotted by Michael O'Kane, with the winner being Lloyd Wilson on his Jawa. Coming Up: For those who don’t work, there is the Mid Week Tourers on the Wednesday 17th July leaving the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway at 10:00 am. Saturday 20th July we have the Motorcycle Meeting where the Guest Speaker will be Chris Minnee who has built a jet gas turbine engine motorcycle, so come along to see and hear this very powerful motorcycle. Thursday 25th July is Club Night and New Members introduction. This particular evening we have Greg Terrill speaking to us about the 2021 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring, being held in Taranaki. Sunday 28th July is our Branch monthly Club Run. Sunday 4th August is the Wet Leg Run, which will commence from the Drury BP Service Centre on the Southern Motorway at 12 noon. We will be paying a visit to New Zealand multiple motorcycle champion, pro-rider and director Paul Pavletich, to look over his very large motorcycle collection.

Secretary’s Notes Thanks to all those who came along to the AGM and prizegiving, on Thursday 27 June. A big thank you to Russel McAlpine who stood down from Committee and the Vice Chairman role after several years. Don Green was elected to the Vice Chairman role. Other office holders and current Committee were re elected and we welcome new Committee members Warwick Darrow and Robin Elliott. As per last year, we are running with one less Committee member than allowed for. If you think you would like to join us on Committee let me know. It would be great to have some fresh thinking. On board Chris Wood now heads the Library team, with Barry Robert still on hand to assist the team. Val Ball continues to do a wonderful job as Bulletin Editor. She would be happy to show someone the ropes if you are interested to enable an easy transition at a later date or to be able to cover if Rodger and Val are away. Give Val a call if you are interested in seeing what s involved. Entry forms are available for Rotorua’s Sulphur City Rally in August and your PV Rally entry form is with this Bulletin. June Club Run Sunday dawned with sunshine which started to melt the ice covering our cars. Lynda was called away to her Boilerhouse Brewery Kitchen and Bar as one of the staff wasn't well. So, grandson Riley and I went off to the start of our club run in Papakura. Assembled there were 16 motorcycles and 19 cars, with around 50+ people, what a great turn out for a club run. For a winters day the weather was more like spring. I gave out the rally instructions to the participants telling them to put their name on them and to state what speed they would like to travel at, and also write down what time you leave the car park and then write down what time you arrive at our club rooms. It was good to see two of our newest club member's 18 year old Ben Creemers who turned up with a friend in Ben's 1935 Pontiac in unrestored condition. Ben also rides a 1950's BSA Golden Flash to and from work and now Ben shares rides with Dad, Rob on a number of Rob's classic race bikes and also there was Bruce Geange riding his 1975 Triumph T160. The route took them from Papakura to Hunua, Clevedon, then onto Brookby, Whitford, Ormiston, through Otara, Otahuhu and Penrose, finishing at the Clubrooms. Afternoon tea was served with homemade pumpkin soup. The feedback I got on the run was very encouraging. Thanks to Alan & Shaaran Price and Val Ball for serving afternoon tea and Don Green and Martyn Seay for helping to clean up. Martin Spicer

Entertainment Notes A good number attended our Annual General Meeting and congratulations to all those re-elected. Sadly, however only 3 of the 6 Committee positions were filled during the meeting (although word has it another member put his hand up after the meeting). I have stood down after my second lengthy stint on the Committee and recommend anyone to give it a go. The rewards are there and you and your Branch benefit. Think on it and meanwhile if you see a Committee member needing help please step forward. Have you thought about coming to the 2021 Vero International Festival of Historical Motoring in Taranaki. These international events are always a great way not only to see some more of our fabulous country, but to meet new people and renew friendships with people who share our passion for historical vehicles. Commercial Notes The G.M. Futurliner was styled by one Harley Earl, for General Motors for that company’s “Parade of Progress” a North American travelling exhibition, promoting future cars and technologies during 1940-41. A second parade took place in 1953. The 12 purpose built vehicles visited 251 towns and small cities in North America, reaching more than 12 million people. The tour ended in 1941, with the U.S. now at war. The Futurliners were built to carry animated exhibits. Their 16 foot side panels folded out to form stage platforms and lighting towers pushed up from their tops. They had their own public address systems as well. They were 33 feet long, 8 feet wide and 11 feet tall and weighed 14 tons. Powered by a 302 cubic inch straight six petrol engine, with 4 speed Hydramatic transmission, plus a 2 speed manual gearbox. The driver climbed a set of stairs, then sat smack in the centre, staring out through a panoramic windshield.
I wonder how much credence one should give to the myriad of e-mails that find their way into our in-boxes regarding climate change and global warming, both from protagonists and deniers. A recent one I received, claims that an eminent Australian scientist, decrees that the volcanic eruption that occurred in 2010 in Iceland, delivered more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in four days, than did all of mankind in the previous five years. The Mt Pinatubo eruption of 1991 in the Philippines he claimed, spewed more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had in all its years on earth. I’m more relaxed now about running my three V8 powered vehicles and we learn that Trevor Kenworthy has decided to convert his Ford pick-up to 12 volt, mainly to get a more efficient windscreen wiper working.

Mid Week Tourers Our run to the North Shore Branch Clubrooms was a gentle 30 mile meander through Taupaki, Riverhead, Dairy Flat, then one mile on East Coast Rd before getting back into the hinterland on Wright Rd and Lonely Track Rd, finishing with an unavoidable three miles through suburbia to the clubrooms. Several regulars on their own reminded us of the value of having a “roller” type route instruction holder, so much easier for anyone without a navigator and so much safer too. But we all got to the finish, even if some might have been later than they would have liked. A BYO lunch was enjoyed in the comfort of the clubrooms, with tea and coffee courtesy of the North Shore members. Then it was time to explore the three very large sheds. One is devoted to their parts, which were well set out. Another shed was used for storage, both of the Branch vehicles and also members own cars (and trucks). The third is their workshop, where members volunteer in restoring Branch projects. Notable amongst these are the Dennis bus, a Bedford tow truck (with a life time of commercial use in the north), a rare ’38 Chevrolet 30cwt truck and an even rarer, an early ‘30’s BSA van. A four poster hoist clearly is popular on Thursdays, when members get together on projects. (We are told the morning teas are equally popular). The Branch is fortunate in having the land available to have built these sheds. Thank you to Paul Collins, their immediate past chairman, who facilitated this visit. A reminder to everyone that sometimes we miss the Bulletin deadline and “Mid-Week” information is circulated by email. Are you on our list? It’s separate to the Secretary’s “Email Tree”. Coming Events: Wednesday 17 July: Starts from the Drury Service Centre, Southern Motorway, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. School holidays, so bring the grandies along. John Cheale has plotted a run to a new attraction in Waiuku, which amongst other things has a great display of children’s toys of yesterday. All under cover and there are lots of cafes in Waiuku. A bonus still to be confirmed, is a possible circuit of a race track (optional). Wednesday 21 August: Starts from the Warehouse Carpark, Westgate, 10:00 a.m. for a 10:30 a.m. departure. Kick Start Rally On Saturday very strong winds and heavy rain hit us. I spoke to Michael O'Kane, the plotter, about maybe having to cancel Sunday's Kick Start Rally if the bad weather continued, so we agreed to run it the following weekend if we needed too. Sunday morning dawned warm and sunny. Lynda, Riley, our grandson and I set off from our farm in Pokeno to arrive at Parrs Park, Glen Eden for the start of the Rally. Assembled there were: Keith Ballagh 350 Velocette, Brian King Matchless 500 G80, Graeme Crawley Ariel 650 Huntmaster, Jack Clark Norton 500 ES2, Brian Gathercole Matchless 500 G9, Ian Bell Triumph 500 T100, Lloyd Wilson 350 Jawa, George Oliver 750 Suzuki Kantana, Derek Ashe BSA C11 and a late starter who had arrived 15 minutes after we had left, Don Green 750 Norton Commando. Don met us at the cafÊ, where the rally finished. Michael kept score when the riders left the start, counting the kicks. As our Holden didn’t have a kick-starter we carried on. The route took us up to the Scenic Drive and then we travelled onto Te Henga, Bethells and Waitakere Roads. The riders then stopped in Taupaki at Chris Clark's checkpoint, where the participants had to stop and kick start their motorcycles. From this point it was onto Nixon, Redhills, Sunnyvale, Township, Christian, O'Neills and North Candia Roads to the final checkpoint manned by Alan and Shaaran Price. After leaving them it was a short ride to the Swanson Station Cafe. All 17 of us sat outside in the warm sunshine and had our lunch. Michael and I conferred and the winner of the Kick Start Rally was Lloyd Wilson. Thank you Michael for plotting a great country ride and thank you to Alan, Shaaran and Chris for your help as marshals. Martin Spicer
