Chairman and Club Captain’s Report Well, by the time you read this it will only a matter of days till Christmas. Time flies as they say. Where did this year go? I’m sure you can all remember as kids a year would take forever to come round to Christmas. Lynda and I hope you all have been double vaccinated and are staying safe and healthy in these very strange times we are living in. Due to these times our Christmas picnic that would have been held at the farm of Dick Langridge in Brookby had to be cancelled because there were not any port-a-loos available in Auckland, due to them being used for MIQ and all the vaccination and pop up testing stations. By the time we are at the Clubrooms for the Golden Anniversary and Christmas dinner, the Clubrooms hopefully, will have been painted on the outside. In regards to the dinner, please remember that this is NOT a pot luck dinner this year as it has been combined to celebrate 50 years of being in our Clubrooms and 50 years since the Charabanc was completely rebuilt after the fire. Please see advert. Tickets are limited to 80 and the cost is $20 per person and $5 per ticket will go to our annual Cancer Day appeal. Santa will be in attendance. Regarding cancelled events: On the weekend that the Hunua100 Rally was to take place the weather was wet and windy and on the day of the cancelled Annual Auckland Motorcycle Rally the weather was warm and sunny. So many events, not just our VCC events, have been cancelled this year and some that are due early next year cancelled too. Let us hope for a better 2022 where we can get out and about again, enjoying our vehicles and attending both Auckland and regional events. The Auckland border crossings will come down on the 15 th December so we can visit family and friends for Christmas and even get away from Auckland for a few days holiday. Hopefully they are still open for those from Auckland and those north of the Harbour Bridge that want to travel to New Plymouth for the Vero Rally. And if the borders are open, some of our motorcycle members will be able to travel to Wellington for their Bi-Annual Motorcycle Rally. Looking forward to the traffic light system, we should be able to have the Veteran and Motorcycle section meetings in December and the Golden Anniversary & Christmas dinner. Check The Bulletin for information but more especially, please keep an eye out for an email on the tree as this will be our quickest way to conveying news to you if something unexpected happens. Please remember, that for any event at the Clubrooms, we will require a Vaccination Certificate. Sorry, but no certificate, no entry! If you are unable to get yours electronically, please keep abreast of what you need to do to obtain one through another means. There is lots of information on the Covid-19 Government website. Our policy statement is again in this month’s Bulletin.

Commercial Notes Sadly, the relaxation of the three months plus lockdown at the beginning of this month, hasn’t been in time enough for us to enjoy one more meeting for 2021. I suspect there will be plenty on the table, if we are not prevented from meeting in January. An email notification either way will clear this matter, I foresee. I have been starved of contact like you all, and as a consequence you’ll have to put up with my ramblings once again. On Tuesday the 23 rd of November Pat and I watched our 1955 Plymouth drive out of our driveway in the hands of its new owners. Although only having owned it for six years, we had come to love it and had spent a small fortune on getting it to its present state. The plus side of course is the room we have now created in our garage in which to put our 1949 Willys/Overland Jeepster back together. At present all the body panels, barring the body tub, decorate our lounge floor, see photo. I have been given details of “The deal of the Century”, a circa 1970 Morris FJK 5 ton flat bed truck, one owner, with a genuine 69,000 miles on the clock, from a deceased estate. The registration is currently on hold. These FJK’s were quite thin on the ground in New Zealand and this truck, for an enthusiastic commercial afficionado would be quite a steal. If anyone, or anyone you know of who might be interested, give me a call and I will steer them in the right direction. (Contact numbers are on the committee page). Keep M Rolling

Veteran Notes First up I've made a sort of decision not rescindable. The 2022 Veteran run on February the 12th will start and finish at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club, as it has done for the last couple of years. This assumes we are in a Covid level which allows it to happen. The entry form is included in this issue of The Bulletin. I should have been on the Far North Tour, but could only go as far as Te Hana, so I didn't. Instead another successful Zoom meeting was held and I was very pleased to note that Barry Robert, probably our most senior member joined it. Barry had also joined the Library group Zoom meeting on the Thursday. I shouldn't harp on about this, however, if a nonagenarian member can successfully join, it shouldn't be too difficult for the octogenarian, septuagenarian, and sexagenarian age brackets to follow suit. We welcomed Kit Maxwell joining for the first time. Kit has his 1913 Maxwell road legal again and has been testing it out. Phil Henley has been working on the fuel mixer, a form of carburetion on his 1906 Cadillac. He found the needle was worn as well as the seat and these have now been repaired. He got information about the needle and seat angle from some papers which came with the car. Barry Birchall has had a broken pushrod in the International Auto Buggy welded up, but upon reassembly he found the pushrod in tension. Further investigation showed that an end bush had been put in the wrong way so this was rectified and the car is running. He also advised that Lance Anderson has got the wheels for his 1903 Cadillac back from Vern Jensen. Barry has had more contact with the descendants of Arthur Cleave pioneer motorist and motor publisher to see if these people have surviving copies of Cleaves early publications. David Oliver has a full garage, so getting access to his Model T isn't easy. David Lane was on a garage raid and produced a very early carburettor with a well made adaptor to convert it from updraft to sidedraft. It was made in Ohio, but we couldn’t identify it but Peter LeGros suggested that one of the adjustments controlled the height of the float to allow for differing fuel densities, which made me wonder if it was off a tractor maybe running on petrol or kerosine. Grant Stott is still in the process of moving things from Whangaparaoa to Warkworth, but until he has new garaging this will be a slow process. We congratulate Roy Sharman, upon his successful cancer therapy. That's it for this month. John Stokes

Motorcycle Notes We hope all of you are staying safe and well and you have had your double vaccinations. I have recently been out on the BSA Golden Flash and the Honda XL riding around the country roads around Pokeno. I have also met up with the Howick riders at the end of their bike runs. Last week when we arrived at the cafe in Maraetai, after a great ride in the sunshine, there were 9 of us. Don Green was a late arrival on his very nice CB 350 Honda 4, which he has recently done an engine rebuild. It was good to see Ian Bell out on his Triumph Speed Twin again, after his recent new hip surgery. Coming Up: Thursday 16 December we will be having our Golden Anniversary dinner, see Bulletin advert. Fingers crossed we will be having our first motorcycle meeting since July. So take note, its on the 18th December 2:30pm. Our guest speaker will be member Don Walker. Don will be bringing along to the meeting his recently restored, immaculate 500 Rudge that Don Green has had a lot to do with. Lynda will be putting on her usual great Christmas spread after the meeting. On New Years Day we will be going to Kaiaua for fish ‘n chips. Meeting point the Jolly Farmer, Drury and we will leave there at 12 noon. Lynda and I would like to wish all of you and your family a safe and happy Christmas and a much better 2022. Mid Week Tourers Once again, what can we say, other than perhaps by the time you read this there will be more. In the meantime the team are assuming that active runs will resume soon and have plans in place. See coming events. Some more snippets from The Bulletin of 50 years ago. A 1938 Plymouth for sale, described as being in immaculate condition, $600. A 1911 V twin Matchless, no rust but needs wheels and mudguards, $50. Four Vintage Buicks, much work already done, many spares, $900. A Veteran Calthorpe complete mechanicals and lights but no body. Haggling starts at $250. Only two of the recipients at the annual awards dinner are still with us, George Mihaljevich and Murray Greig, both for their restorations, George for his BIG 1924 Renault and Murray for his 1923 Indian and both still motoring. And the late Phil Jones, Commercial Convenor, was rewarded to see five of his section turn up at the Gymnic. In round figures, those attending totalled 400 adults and 300 children on an absolutely glorious day at Murphy’s Bush.

Library Notes As I write this, Auckland is about to be told when and if, we might be coming out of total lockdown and what changes may be on the way as we go into the ‘traffic- light’ regime. Our precious collection of books and other historic material has pretty much been left to its own devices during lockdown with the de-humidifier doing its thing, night and day, keeping the collection all safe and dry. Meantime, we as the Library team have been meeting regularly as per usual on Thursday mornings, but via Zoom which, bearing in mind the average age of our members has been something that most of us have taken a little time to come to grips with! By now though, we are all pretty familiar with its, (and our own) idiosyncrasies and in some respects we may miss it (when and if), we will again be meeting in person. Our only news is that we have embarked on a major upgrade of our Library records, that is, the database system we use to record all the material stored in the Library. The current system is based on several excel spreadsheets, with a separate sheet being allocated to each section of books. It has served us well over the years, but it has now been superseded by purposedesigned systems. Richard Green identified that the system used by the RollsRoyce Club that he belongs to, would be ideal for our Library. It is called ‘TinyCat’ and has many more features which will help make fundamentals such as record-keeping and book-finding much more efficient. In particular, it will also open-up the potential for our members to search for books on the system and on-line on their own computers or other devices. This we believe will bring our members more in touch with what the Library has to offer them in their interest in the history of motor vehicles. At present and despite lockdown, we are in the process of transferring the database from the old system to the new one. Richard has done a great job and so far over 1500 books are now listed on ‘Tiny Cat’. It is a big task and we are indebted to Richard for the work he has undertaken. Understandably, while we are in the Covid environment and the Library is closed, we are unable to say exactly when ‘Tiny Cat’ will be accessible to members, but it is a top priority you can be sure of and we will keep you informed as the project progresses.

Remember these are paid to the National Office account, NOT our Branch account. If you follow the link on the emailed invoice it will take you straight there. Let me know if you have any queries. I also have entry forms for the Burma Rally in January in Wanganui. At this stage it is still going ahead, although the larger scale Vintage Weekend has been cancelled. The Committee has continued to meet via zoom for essential Committee matters, with a number of things being discussed. Graeme Crawley and Warwick Darrow have been putting together a maintenance plan and it looks like we will need to attend to a couple of these sooner rather than later, particularly spouting and barn cladding. We will get back to the toilet renovations in the New Year and the Clubrooms will be looking great with a new coat of paint to the exterior in time for Christmas. The Dave Tomkins Story Dave’s official interest in motor vehicles started in 1952, when he took his motorcycle riding test on a 1939 Harley Davidson and then afterwards took his car driving test in a 1936 Willys 77 van, passing both tests with no problems. During the school holidays he worked for Merson Brothers of Symonds Street who were agents for AJS and Harley Davidson, as well as several other makes. Dave started motorcycle racing in 1952 with a 1929 Harley Peashooter, on the beach and on grass tracks and eventually road racing. In 1956 he rode a KTT Velocette, gaining 2nd and 3rd placing at the Muriwai Beach championships. In 1967 Dave bought a 1923 Harley Davidson and sidecar from his friend, the late Barry Williams, with this he joined the Auckland Veteran and Vintage Car Club in 1967. Dave and Barry met when they were doing their compulsory military training as dispatch riders in 1955. In 1960 Dave formally qualified as a motorcycle mechanic, serving a correspondence course from Trentham. He was subsequently involved in apprentice training and received awards for this from the training college. Dave was the foreman at Len Perry Motorcycles from 1960 to 1972. He also worked at Forbes and Davies, West City Honda and Bob Anderson Motorcycles. He subsequently worked in the mechanical engineering side of the Post Office. At one stage of his life he drove buses for the eccentric Auckland Bus Company ''John Stokes’ word''. He also was a driving test examiner in West Auckland. In 1989 Dave moved to Mangonui and then joined the Far North VCC. He also carried on his job as a driving license examiner in Kaitaia while up there. Over his many years Dave has restored a number of motorcycles which were: 1934 BSA V Twin, 1929 Rex Acme and reconverted a 1948 1000 Vincent back from a speedway bike to a road bike. His last bike to be restored was a 1947 600cc Norton single, which he rode this bike on the 2020 National Norton Rally and was awarded best engineered bike. He also rode the Norton in the 2020 Auckland Annual Motorcycle Rally, where he was awarded the oldest rider trophy. In 2016 Dave was inducted into the New Zealand Speedway Hall of Fame. In Dave’s speedway career he won 14 National titles, on solos, sidecars and Dave also raced speedway midgets. Dave has always been a Vincent rider and rode his bike in the 2015 Vincent International Rally in Italy, travelling through 11 countries. Dave also favour's those other great V Twin’s from Italy – Ducati. Just recently Dave has purchased a 1947 Royal Enfield model G to restore ''Good on ya mate''. Dave is nearly 85 and is suffering some health problems, so keep fighting big feller.

Covid-19 Restrictions
COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS As Auckland has moved to the new Covid Protection Framework (traffic light system), the Committee have agreed that the Branch will require proof of vaccination to attend Branch events. This allows us to get back to a “normal calendar” as soon as we can and ensures we are keeping our members as safe as we can. At all levels (red, orange and green) we will be able to hold our events, with a limit of 100 people if we are still at red. You will need to continue to scan or sign in to all events and show proof of vaccination. The Committee is planning for the Golden Christmas Celebration Dinner this month in the hope we are at the Red Traffic light or lower. For this event, unfortunately we will have to turn away anyone who cannot show proof of their vaccination.

We are in the process of restructuring the warehousing, identifying and cataloguing the parts so that they can be easily found. Already listed in the catalogue are the gaskets, new old stock armatures for generators, starters and wiper motors.
