Chairman’s Report I don't know about you but these days the time seems to just fly by for me. It only seems that we had just got over Christmas and the New Year’s day run and now here we are six months from Christmas again. Since the last Bulletin Lynda and I have had another grandson Wyatt, he’s just turned two months old and is a real charmer. As you may be aware our Clubrooms were flooded downstairs in March after a weather bomb hit Auckland. We did carry on using the Clubrooms for a few weeks, but once we had put the insurance claim into Vero we had to close down the Clubrooms so that the contractors could start packing up the Library into boxes and then remove all the shelving, then the carpets and vinyl were taken out, plus the damaged jib board. The work will continue for a few weeks, so keep an eye on the email tree as to when the Clubrooms will be open again. I manned the Branches stand at the recent and successful New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Show, which raised money for the Rotary Clubs charities. I also recently went to Whangarei for the Northland Annual Motorcycle Rally, which was a great weekend away. For our last Branch event in May, I was a check marshal on the Experts Rally. Club Captain’s Report I hope this finds you all well and enjoying being able to get out and about with your vehicles. All our sections meetings came to a halt in May due to us having to close the Clubrooms until the major flooding repairs have been completed. Martin Spicer and John Stokes visited Fred Clifford, to present him with his 60 year award and framed certificate at his home in Milford, as he was unable to attend the 50 and 60 year Awards Ceremony, due to mobility issues. Some 25 members of the motorcycle section attended the Annual Northland Motorcycle Rally. The Committee agreed that the Annual Motorcycle Rally for 2022 be held a couple of weeks earlier than normal and that for the first time in a number of years it would be based out of town. We have secured the Children’s School Camp in Port Waikato for the base. An excellent facility. Please let Martin Spicer know your interest to attend, if you have not already done so. Numbers will be critical to cover the costs of the venue hire. Sunday 29th May, was the Annual Experts Rally. Thanks to Rodger and Val Ball for plotting this run, which was held over South Auckland roads and the winner was Russel and Jocelyn McAlpine. Many thanks to the Marshalls who helped out. Please put in your diary the Annual Vintage Muster being held on 19 June, starting in West Auckland at Morrison’s Flower Shop Carpark and is plotted by John Morrison. This event is open everyone who owns a vintage vehicle (1919-1931). If you are new to the Club and you own a vehicle in this category, then enter the event (entry form on our website or in the April issue of The Bulletin). Come along and join in. The event finishes for lunch at the Swanson RSA. Sunday 26th June we will meet at the Clubrooms from 7:30am onwards (for a cuppa) and head off at 8:30am just around the corner to Mt Smart Stadium to take part in the monthly car show event hosted by Meguiar’s. The event finishes at 12noon and we shall head back to the Clubrooms for soup and rolls. Unfortunately, as reported in March, our lower ground floor was flooded in the rain bomb. During the last few weeks the Library has been being packed up, by professional commercial movers, into labelled boxes and currently is being stored on the mezzanine and ground floor area. Also on the ground floor is all the shelving. Unfortunately, there was no option other than to strip out the Library in order to successfully remove the carpet. All floors on the lower ground area are being steam cleaned, dried and microbial sprayed. The black water that entered the Clubrooms could have caused severe health issues in the future should black mould and spores grow in the carpet in the Library, or hallway, or within the walls that had been wet. The lower jib board walls up to 60cm, door jams and skirting boards have now been removed. Shortly the removal of the shower and surrounds, urinal wall and surrounds and the vanity units will happen. What a huge job! We shall be meeting with the reinstatement contractors to choose carpet (hopefully as close to what we currently have), new vinyl and vanity units for the reinstatement to begin. AGM – We are making back-up plans for a change of venue, should the Clubrooms not be completed by that date, which is 25th June. Please keep

Plans are well in hand for the National AGM – see Tracey’s Secretary Notes. Put the date in your diary to come along to that. There is no charge. Do you have an email address, a change of email address and have not advised us of it? If so, please send this to Tracey in order that she can include you on the email tree. This tree is useful for keeping you updated, outside of “The Bulletin”, when required. We use it to remind you of Branch events. 2022 National AGM—HELP REQUIRED Auckland Branch is hosting the National AGM, Friday August 12 to Sunday August 14. We will require help on all days. Mainly in transporting delegates from the airport to the Double Tree Hilton, Karaka (just off the Southern Motorway at Papakura) on Friday afternoon and back to the airport on Sunday from the Clubrooms or the hotel. Club vehicles would be great but not essential. Help will be required in the kitchen on the Sunday to prepare and serve a lunch. We are also looking for “goodie bag” items if you have contacts or a business that could donate anything suitable. Secretary’s Notes The Branch AGM is 25th June. Watch your email in case we have to change the venue, but I hope to see many of you in attendance. If you have friends or acquaintances you are encouraging to join the Club, the on line membership form is now up and running on the National website, so all you need do is direct them to the website. The form is on line, goes immediately to Christchurch and new members will receive instant confirmation back. Another step closer to a seamless streamlined modern technological approach to all Club matters. From the Committee table: Preparations continue for this year’s Annual Motorcycle Rally, which will be based out of Port Waikato and next year’s National Veteran Rally, where the base has been settled on at Tuakau. Investigation of the cost of providing eftpos at the Clubrooms is underway. The insurance claim for the flash flooding water damage progressed and as I write this, the Library has been completely dismantled and moved and the carpet is up. Hopefully we are able to reopen the Clubrooms very shortly. We are also hosting the National AGM in August, at the Double Tree Hilton, Karaka. Please see advert elsewhere in this Bulletin for help required, but I urge you to take the opportunity to attend the National AGM on the Saturday morning. It will cost you nothing to register and attend the morning AGM meeting and it is an opportunity to not only observe and meet the Management Committee, but also have a say. Tracey Winterbottom

Motorcycle Notes Since the last report, 50 and 60 year Membership Awards were held at the Clubrooms. One of our older Motorcycle members, Fred Clifford, couldn't attend the meeting, so John Stokes and I went to Milford to spend time with Fred and present him with his 60 year membership award and framed certificate. The next motorcycle event was the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Show held for the first time at the Henderson Trusts Stadium. I maned the Branch’s stand over the weekend where we had 29 members bikes on the stand. The show was a great success with around 400 motorcycles on display. It made a profit which benefited the Rotary Clubs charities. I had a number of enquiries from people wanting to join the Club. The next event was Northland’s Motorcycle Rally, held in Whangarei, with a large number of our members taking part. A couple of months back the Clubrooms were flooded and we now have contractors repairing the damage and this has meant the Clubrooms are closed until the repairs have been completed. Therefore there was no Motorcycle meeting during May. Keep those 2, 3 and 4 wheels turning safely. Martin Spicer

2022 Northland Motorcycle Rally The weather the week leading up to the Northland Motorcycle Rally was very wintry with rain, low temperatures and strong winds. Saturday morning saw sunshine, but it was a bit chilly. Upon arriving at the Northland Branch Clubrooms what a great sight in the car park with the assorted motorcycles on display. Auckland member Rory King was not riding his WLA Harley this time, but was on his recently acquired 350 AJS. There were just over 60 bikes entered, including 25 Auckland Branch members. There were three sidecar outfits, being: Paul & Jodi Tomlin’s 1925 Harley Davidson Model J, Chris Clark & Mike O’Kane 1952 BSA Golden Flash. There was a guest rider on a 2017 Ural Tourist CT, 5 Triumph’s, 13 BSA’s, 5 Harley’s, 4 Vincent’s, 5 BMW’s, 4 AJS’s, 5 Honda’s, 4 Norton’s, 1 Douglas, 1 Royal Enfield, 3 Yamaha’s and 2 Matchless’. The first two bikes away were the veterans of Don Green 1916 Triumph model H and Robert Young 1918 Triumph model H. These two bikes looked great side by side. Dave Mayhew’s Douglas stopped about 5 miles from the start, no electrics, luckily Steve Walter stopped to help and found a broken wire that he repaired. The rally route was over some brilliant motorcycling roads, with little traffic. We stopped for lunch at the Poroti Sports Ground Complex and after lunch we visited a great collection of cars and motorcycles that were lined up outside an enormous garage. Dinner and prizegiving were held at the Clubrooms. New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Show The last New Zealand Classic Motorcycle show was held about two years ago at ASB Show Grounds, Greenlane and saw about 1200 motorcycles on display. This years show was held at the Trusts Stadium Henderson. The show theme this year was more on Classics and modified, but there were new motorcycles on display from Benelli, Royal Enfield and Indian. Motorcycles on our stand were: BSA, Triumph, Norton, Panther, Honda, Sun, Douglas, Harley Davidson, Indian, Rudge, Moto Guzzi, Manurhin, AJS and Velocette, a total of 29 bikes. Brian King who is 85, rode his 1939 BSA single and sidecar from the Maraetai coast to the show in rush hour traffic, brave man! Outside in the carpark over the weekend there were a number of demonstrations from motorcycle stunt riders and a also a swap meet. The Motorcycles on display ranged from Veteran, Vintage, pre and post WW2 and up to the 1990’s. There was a very large collection of race bikes from the NZ Classic Racing Register and also an abundance of McIntosh race bikes. There were Vintage Speedway solos and sidecars, Classic Motocross bikes, drag bikes, choppers and so many versions of customised Harley's, electric bikes. The show was busy right up to closing time at 5:00pm. Sunday morning, unfortunately saw light rain on and of all day, which cut down the number of bikes ridden there. However the crowds still came in all through the day. Don Walker was awarded two 1st places, for his 1939 Rudge Ulster and his 1947 Norton International. David Morley was awarded a few 1 st places too. Bernie Bolstad won an award for his recently finished Honda Gold Wing tilting bike and Douglas Ormrod won an award for his Sun Wasp scooter. I would like to thank members who put their motorcycles on the Branch stand and other stands, and also helped out manning our table. Member Graham Viall, the man behind all of these great motorcycle shows was very happy with this show, which made a profit and through the Rotary Club many charities will benefit. Martin Spicer

Mid Week Tourers A group of 22 cars assembled at the Drury BP before setting off on about a 35km run on May 18. The main attraction at the BP Service Centre was the large prominent sign displaying the price of “liquid gold”. The run headed up the old Great South Road and across the Bombay’s via the Razorback Road before U turning back up a short section of the motorway and heading off at Beaver Road West and out past the Buckland Hall. From here we scouted around the back of Pukekohe Hill via Ray Wright Road to come out at the Patumahoe/Waiuku roundabout before heading through to Glenbrook via Mauku to arrive at Alex and Daphne Wilson’s property in Collie Road, just past the Calendula Café. The Wilson’s collection included a brass Model T, a Model A Roadster, a collection of horse drawn traps and a well set up workshop with memorabilia galore was not only confined to the shed but also around the well maintained rural block. It was one of those sheds where many unexpected items appeared that made you think as to their origins. Most led to long explanations of their discovery and past history. Lunch was enjoyed on the deck of the house with the usual stories being told about “not being lost enroute, but merely checking out the sights”. All in all, it was a great run and thoroughly enjoyed by all the participants. Thanks again to Alex and Daphne for their kind hospitality. Did We Need a New Logo? Did we need a New Logo! We Did Not! The people that I have shown the proposed logo to have universally not seen any connection to a motoring organisation. All we need to do is look at some of our oldest car manufacturers. Almost all of them have retained the basis of their original logo making small changes over time. Look at Ford, Chevrolet, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, MG, Audi, VW, Mercedes, Renault, Citroën, Peugeot, the list goes on. However, we do need to change our name to something more inclusive of the classes of vehicle we support. Be it Classic, Collectable or something more encompassing than that of those old ‘bangers’! Our target future membership should be those that are now retiring and the vehicles of their parents, or those of their youth. Their relative youth will allow our Club to possibly survive. We have to look forward to the future, not back to the past. Failure to do this will mean our clubs are doomed!!

Delayed 2021 Ladies Rally The Ladies Rally started at the Albany Pub with Rodger and Val Ball starting the Rally. Thank you Rodger and Val. Starting with a short approximate 6 miles of timed section over some challenging roads to Riverhead. In this section were eight silent checks and a single off course check. With the timed section over, it was an interesting tour over roads that are seldom used by the Auckland Branch, including new roads that had not been used before. Sorry about the few pot holes and the short section of loose metal roads, it must have been a challenge for the Mini! The roads travelled across to Kumeu, then north to Waitoki, around the back of Orewa, meeting the sea at Waiwera before heading south to cross over the seldom used Pukeko Bridge, with its now faded pink legs over the Northern Motorway. An interesting bridge it is, as it has a steep entry and is really quite narrow, in fact it is one way. First time over is quite a challenge! The views from the far side are really interesting, as you can see back to the top of the Waitemata Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges right around, see the Gulf and on a clear day to Little and Great Barrier Island and most things in between. Would not want to be there on a windy day as it is very exposed! The run continued on to the Orewa Surf Lifesaving Club carpark for afternoon tea. We had seven entry’s, which was a pity as we put in a lot of work to organise this rally, also ensuring we kept entrants Covid safe. The entrants are what makes this all worthwhile and I remind the Branch, no entrants, no rallies! Overall winners: Tracey, Stephen and Ryan Winterbottom, Congratulations! Christine and Alan Allbon

2022 Experts Rally Well the Experts Rally is all done and dusted for another year. Starting at Ray Small Park carpark Papakura (very handy for the plotters) the route took competitors in a round about way up Red Hill where the view to the Manukau, with the tide pretty much in, could be seen. From here it was down the hill and across to Karaka where there were two Straight Line Navigation sections, (A) and (B), around the housing areas of Karaka Harbourside and Karaka Lakes should have been completed. After completing the Straight Line Navigation, timing ceased and competitors could travel at their own speed through Lifestyle Blocks and farm land at Karaka to the finish at CCT Lavender Café at 242 Urquhart Road, Karaka, where members could have a cuppa and pull the event to pieces! Unfortunately we were unable to partake in any conversation, or enjoy a cuppa at the Café, because by the time the last vehicle arrived at the finish, the Café was about to close. Prior to the 5 mile check on the northern side of Red Hill, there weren’t any tricks or traps, but once into the Straight Line Navigation there were a couple of roads you had to do something at and perhaps this may have been the “undoing” for some competitors. There was a “Panic Slip” attached to enable all participants to find the finish, even those who were “lost”. From comments heard at the final check, we understand some people tried starting with Straight Line Navigation (B), as this was on the left hand side of the page! To us the event really wasn’t hard providing competitors read and applied the overriding instructions correctly. Thank you to everyone who participated and gave it a go, in particular newer members Chris and Suzanne Hurdle. Many thanks to the Marshals on the day being: Glenn and Marion Morris who not only were start and trail vehicle but also checkers, Gavin Welch and Sophie Zhao in the second Straight Line Navigation section and Martin and Lynda Spicer who were off course in Blackbridge Road should you have missed “Muir Rd” or kept right at “MUIR RD”. Congratulations to Russel and Jocelyn McAlpine in their 1930 Ford Model A Phaeton, who clean sheeted the Silent Checks and were only 6 minutes out on time.

Chairman: Well here we are at the end of another AVVCC year. We have certainly had a mixed up year. Since last June’s AGM we in Auckland have had four and a half months of lockdowns. Once we were allowed to reopen again in December and the Branch got back to normality, we had some very entertaining speakers at Club Nights and the Motorcycle meetings. Due to the lockdowns in October we had to postpone the Annual Hunua 100 Rally, the 50 & 60 year Membership Awards and also the Auckland Motorcycle Rally. However, December saw a slackening off of lockdowns and we were able to celebrate the 50 years that the Clubrooms were opened and also 50 years since the Charabanc was restored, which was celebrated at the Clubrooms with over 80 members in attendance. The Branch meetings resumed in December, the veteran, vintage and motorcycle meetings were all well attended. The New Years Day fish n chip run to Kaiaua was again well attended. At the end of January a number of the motorcycle section went to Wellington for their Bi-Annual Motorcycle Rally. In February Lynda and I were passengers on the Branch Charabanc on the Veteran Rally, which was well attended and was a good day out for all taking part. March 12 was the National Executive Meeting and Head Office decided this would be conducted over Zoom. Tracey and I were attending from our homes. One of the main items on the agenda was the re branding of the Club Logo, unfortunately on the nation wide vote it failed by just one vote. Sunday 13 March we held the postponed Hunua 100 Rally but it was a rally only. On April 2nd I took part in the Waikato Mooloo Meander Motorcycle Rally and then the 9th was the postponed Annual Auckland Motorcycle Rally. Congratulations to all the rally winners and a big thank you to all the rally plotters and their volunteer helpers that put on these events for you. Monday 21st March a weather bomb hit Auckland. This storm caused very bad flooding in Auckland, including Fairfax Avenue and our Clubrooms. We put in a claim to Vero and about six weeks later work began on repairing the damage. The biggest part of this has been the boxing up and labelling of all the Library books which was completed by a professional commercial removal company. We were warned that as the flood waters had come in from the road, they would be contaminated from sewage, which is why all the carpets, vinyl and jib board have had to be removed. All the floor areas will be steam cleaned to dry all the floor areas and then microbial spray everywhere. Jib board, door jams and skirting have been removed, as well as the shower area, urinal surround

Annual Reports Contd.. and vanities. Such a huge job. Then hopefully, the instatement of everything will start to happen. Saturday 30 April we had a very good turnout at the Clubrooms for the 50 and 60 Membership Awards. It shows what marvellous dedication these members have for the Club 50 & 60 years on. I would like to thank all of my fellow Committee members who have served over the last five years to run our Branch so successfully in some very trying times and thanks to all of you who have helped in the running of all Branch events, be they section meetings, club nights, rallies and runs. Thanks also to the teams that look after the Charabanc, the Library, Spares and to Dave and Barbara Allbon who look after our gardens. Now one more, a very big thank you must go to our Bulletin Editor Val Ball. Val has produced The Bulletin for 19 years and has kept the Committee on its toes. Val is now standing down so she and Rodger can have a more relaxing time without thinking about deadlines. So Val, thank you from the Committee, and I and all Branch members. We have had the Clubrooms repainted outside and the entrance to the carpark has had concrete repairs done. We were in the process of getting quotes done for the Barn repairs, but this will be handed over to the incoming Committee to complete. I have been your Branch Chairman since June 2017, it doesn't seem possible that five years have just flown by. I have enjoyed being part of the Committee team that has kept the Branch going through some very testing times. Of course these testing time have affected all branches throughout the country. But I now think its time for me to stand down and let someone else take up the reins. This June I will have been a Club member for 32 years and I am currently the longest serving Committee member, having started back in 1998 when I became the Branches Motorcycle co-ordinator with the late Colin Tomkins. I will still carry on this position for as long as the members want me to. So I wish the very best to whoever takes over from me at the AGM and I will assist them in anyway I can to maintain the smooth running of the Auckland Branch. So its good bye for now, keep all your wheels turning safely.

Annual Reports Contd.. Club Captain: Another 12 months has passed since I did my last annual report. Although 2020/2021 saw some lockdowns at least we were able to hold the vast majority of events. The 2021/22 year has been a nightmare for everyone, especially our Branch being in Auckland. We had to endure watching the vast majority of New Zealand returning to a relatively normal scene and we were still locked in. Because of this, and the restrictions imposed there has only been a few events that Aucklanders have been able to take part in. After going into the Red Light setting, we were at least able to have meetings at the Clubrooms. John Stokes kicked off the ‘new year’ with a Veteran meeting at the beginning of December. We, as a whole Branch, welcomed freedom by finally having our delayed 50th Golden Anniversary Celebration dinner on 17th December. 82 people enjoyed the evening, where I served (along with my wonderful assistants, Debbie and Diane) a sumptuous 2 course meal. We also had Santa and his naughty elf giving out gifts to all the good girls and boys, plus two excellent guest speakers: Barry Robert speaking about the Charabanc coming back onto the road 50 years ago and Norm Dewhurst speaking about how we obtained our Clubrooms 50 years ago. A great night had by all. We were able to see in the New Year of 2022 by running our usual New Years Day run to Kaiaua for the traditional fish ‘n chips. A great number attended. The mid week tourers got back up and running with Ryan Winterbottom plotting their January run. Second up was John Stokes Veteran Rally. Another really enjoyable event in early February. For the club run at the end of February, I plotted a run that wended its way through parts of the Awhitu Peninsular, Waiuku, Otaua and finally finishing at Wrights Water Garden, Patumahoe. Did I mention water in the above paragraph? Well, as many of you know Auckland suffered a water bomb in March and our Clubrooms sustained black water damage in the lower ground floor. We saw October 2021 Hunua 100 finally run in March. Unfortunately we could not run either the Saturday Garden Party, or hold a prizegiving dinner, as when we set the date, we were working with the Red Light being in place. A very different Hunua 100 was well attended. It was plotted by Wayne Roberts & Gavin Welch. People were treated to roads in West Auckland that had not been used for many years and some new roads covered as well. They were able to finish at Wainui Hall for a final cuppa. Trophies for the Hunua 100 will be presented at the AGM. The Annual Auckland Motorcycle Rally that is normally held in November, was finally run in April 2022. Again, no Friday night noggin ‘n natter, nor the usual evening dinner. They did hold a prize giving, no trophies handed out, about an hour after the rally finished a light meal was provided to 13 people. A good number of our members attended the International Rally which was held in New Plymouth. The Branch Charabanc also made the journey down there. It was very much touch and go as to whether members would be able to attend and then the traffic light system changed. A huge sigh of relief, although it was still required that all attending had their vaccination passes. All those that attended had a wonderful time.

Annual Reports Contd.. Many of you have enjoyed attending a few out of town events, thankful to be able to escape Auckland. My thanks to all Rally plotters – Wayne Roberts, Gavin Welch, John Stokes, Alan Macey (Motorcycle Rally), Rodger & Val Ball and John Morrison. Thanks also to the marshals, time keepers and secretaries who have helped at these events. We have travelled over some lovely quiet roads, some new to us, enjoyed beautiful scenery and enjoyed each other’s company. Thank you to Shaaran Price who has provided the Club Night suppers and to Alan who continues to keep our Branch furniture in good repair and does a lot of general repairs around the Clubrooms. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, such as Clubroom maintenance, garden upkeep, finance, licences, attending Executive meetings and National AGM meetings, runs and rallies being plotted or overseen and all this is done on a voluntary basis. Many hours each month is spent by your hardworking Committee to ensure you have a brilliant Branch to come to and enjoy the events we put on. To that end, I would like to thank my fellow Committee members for their untiring work: Martin Spicer, Tracey Winterbottom, Don Green, John Stokes, Shaaran Price, John Morrison, Graeme Crawley, Warwick Darrow and Alastair Moffat. Thanks also to Chris Wood and the Library team, Leo Fowler & Charlotte Bovis our Bar Managers, Jack Nazer our Spares guru and finally to Val Ball, who will be handing over the keys to another Bulletin Editor this year after serving 19 years in this role. Also thanks to the small team that keep the Charabanc on the road and up to scratch. I would also like to pass on my personal thanks to Martin, who promotes this Branch wherever and whenever he can, attending other events such as large car and motorcycle shows taking along the Auckland VCC stand. It has certainly been a challenging year for the Committee, having to make decisions we never thought we would have to do, like vaccination passes being mandatory. Thank goodness that is now relaxed. Then everyone enduring the long 4.5 month lockdown but still having zoom Committee meetings monthly to deal with whatever needed to be done with the ever changing Auckland lockdown situation, revamping events to fit the traffic light settings and then finally having to deal with flood damage and everything that has entailed. It certainly isn’t dull. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 5th year as Club Captain and look forward to the next 12 months of what this Branch has to offer. Hopefully 2022/23 will see us being able to enjoy a whole 12 months of motoring in our chosen vehicles, enjoying our own events, as well as those held by other branches and of course, meeting new people along the way.

Annual Reports Contd.. Motorcycle Section: Well here we are with another end of year report for the Motorcycle section. Unfortunately we had some of the time taken up with Covid lockdowns. In July I took the monthly motorcycle run out to visit AV SPECS at Ardmore Airport to see all their air plane projects that they are working on. We had some very good guest speakers at the meetings. These being Terry Doherty who told us about the formation of the Mermere Dragway, his work for Telecom and the undersea communications cable and his collection of hundreds of pocket watches. Jack Nazer told us about his car racing days. We had lockdowns until the December meeting where we had a big turnout, with guest speaker Don Walker and his 1937 restored Rudge Ulster. Another good turnout for the New Years Day run and January’s speaker was Graham Viall with his Triumph T120 and BSA Hornet bikes. February a group of us went to Wellington for their Bi-Annual Motorcycle Rally. February’s speakers were Peter Alderdice and Marshall Corraza, debating on the merits of Harley Davidson verse's Indian. March speaker was New member and 2 nd youngest Callum Bullard (33) with his new McIntosh Manx Norton and restored 1970 Triumph Bonneville. In April we held the postponed 2021 Annual Auckland Motorcycle Rally, this event went very well and had a good turnout of riders. The April meeting speakers were Paul Downie and David Broadhead with their two Panthers. In May there was the New Zealand Classic Motorcycle Show held in Henderson, where we had 29 members motorcycles on the Branch stand. This was a great show with around 400 bikes on display. Also in May, 25 Auckland Branch members went to Whangarei for the Northland Motorcycle Rally. Back in March the Clubrooms were flooded when a weather bomb hit Auckland and because the Clubrooms have been closed due to the damage, the May meeting was cancelled. Over the past year we have had a number of new members join us, but sadly we also had a couple pass away. Martin Spicer

Annual Reports Contd.. Veteran Section: The 2021/22 Veteran Section had a number of meetings over the last year. Attendances varied between about twelve and twenty plus members, depending on the weather. It's interesting to note there was a major Covid lockdown in Auckland from May 2021 until about November 2021. This severely impacted on section meetings, however, the section started Zoom meetings. Given the age and computer hesitancy of many section members, the Zoom meetings attracted about eight and a possible maximum of nine members, which is excellent and demonstrates that some of our members are up with the play. This includes our most senior member Barry Robert who at ninety plus mastered Zoom after a couple of attempts. Other younger members got their wives/partners to set up Zoom for them and a couple of people had sufficient skills to film their projects and other stuff of interest. People have been bringing items of interest to physical section meetings, these include a Tampier fuel valve from a world war one aircraft and a canistered Dodge 4 handbook and manuals. The Annual Veteran Rally was quite well attended, given Covid issues and particular praise should be given to Don Green, the solo motorcycle entrant who rode his belt drive Triumph over the long route. Please note the May section meeting was cancelled due to the flooding in the Library due to the recent downpour and insurance work to rectify the damage from this. One book was lost along with some marque magazines. I should mention Gavin Welch who consistently drives his 1912 Ford Model T Ford to the section meetings. Planning for the 2023 National Veteran Rally is underway. John Stokes
Vintage Section: The emergence of the Omicron variant early this year once again disrupted some of our section’s monthly meetings, but as we recover, the enthusiasm for social contact with likeminded people is obvious. All the Vintage vehicles are now well into their 10th decade and the fact that so many of them are still actively on the road testifies to the quality of the original cars, but even more so to the ingenuity of their owners in keeping this very important slice of history alive. As original spare parts become ever harder to source, we are challenged to find ways to repair, or re-make new bits and our group is very supportive in providing information, and the names of people and products who can help. Modern technology often helps also, as witnessed by LED light bulbs and rubber type compounds that can be moulded to original shapes.

Several vehicles from our section travelled long distances during the year to take part in events such as the Vero International in Taranaki, the Vintage Venture in the Waikato, a scaled back Art Deco in Hawkes Bay and the Highland Fling in Taihape. The Auckland Branch’s premier event, the Hunua 100 was well represented by Vintage Vehicles. Several ladies come along with their husbands to our meetings and their support is much appreciated. We often welcome visitors from other branches. Our group is in good heart and we look forward hopefully to a less disrupted year ahead. Murray and Penny Firth
Commercial: The last twelve months has seen our little section partake of very little action, what with the Covid lockdowns and my moving an hour away from the Clubrooms, on a good day! Nevertheless, the nights we did meet were full of enthusiasm. It was unfortunate that on the January meeting night Pat and I left home bright and early, detouring on the way to our New Windsor Doctor, to have him look at a troublesome toe on my right foot. It’s as well that I did, I was shot straight into Auckland Hospital where I had it removed the next morning. Further lockdowns since then, have interrupted Branch activities yet again, and the sheer distance from Parakai, with Motorway travel only from Westgate, will severely curtail our visits to what we used to call our “other home”. The opportunity still exists though, for someone to step up and become the Commercial representative. I was quite moved in early April, when my son said he would come and help me fire up the Mighty Mite, so we could join the Anzac Day parade through Helensville, after it had lain idle for three years. Library: It could be said that this has been the year of Covid and certainly the periods of Lockdown meant that the Library was necessarily not available to members at various times. This has been reflected in the lower number of books borrowed over the year. At the same time the volume of books added to our collection has not diminished and as most of these have come via member donations, we are forever grateful. Earlier this past year Richard Green put forward a proposal involving the replacement of the existing computer-based listing of books held in the Library. Following due consideration we have installed and commissioned a webbased system which is specifically designed for smaller libraries such as ours. The Tiny-Cat system is web-based, it is very secure and now that it has been commissioned, it has proven to be as efficient and worthwhile as we could have wished for. The transfer of the existing data and re-listing of the thousands of titles and so on has been largely done by Richard himself and the Branch and its members will now reap the benefit of his work for a long time to come. Thank you Richard. In recent weeks, as the result of a heavy downpour, the Library was flooded with stormwater which had flowed from the rear carpark, then under the back door of the Clubrooms and under the Library door. It rose to about 25-30 mm. above the carpeted concrete floor. Thanks to the efforts of some members, the water was soon removed with water-vacuums and other devices. From that point the Library was closed off as usual and the de-humidifier left (as it always is) to do its job of keeping things dry. In only a few days the carpets were bone dry. None of the books came into contact with water and none were damaged. Due to the possibility of contaminated water ingress, the Branch Committee has decided that the carpets in the Library must be replaced. This entails the complete contents (29 tonnes of books, the shelves they were on as well as other material) being relocated upstairs in the Clubrooms while the shelving is removed for re-laying of the carpet. All this work to be carried out by contractors. Once the new carpets are re-laid the shelves can be re-installed and the books can be put back into their shelves. All efforts will be made to ensure the books go back where they came from. Quite how long this process will take we can’t be sure, but members can be assured that the Library team will do their best.
