Chairman’s Annual Report June 2019 HI Everyone, my thoughts go out to all those who have lost their loved ones over the past year and also to anyone that has been ill over the past year. The Cancer Society Daffodil Day was another great day with a good turnout. The Show & Shine looks like we might do this again this year, as it took nothing to put together so let’s have more vehicles this year please. The Branch has had a big year with a lot of big cost Items done over the year. First the front door was replaced on the Club Room, new vinyl put in the Club Rooms’ toilets and front porch, also new drapes in the meeting room. Painting of the Parts Shed, the front of the Museum and front gates, then shifting the gates out the drive which has put a stop to the lawns getting ripped up by some idiots that don’t have any respect for other peoples’ property. Also the purchase of the new, larger mower which has cut mowing time under half. The big event for the Branch was the National South Island Easter Rally from the 19th—22nd April 2019 and 50 years of the Branch. I would like to take the time to thank the Rally Committee and everyone else, for their time and effort they put into this event. There are too many names to mention so a’ Big Thanks’ to everyone. It was great to have the National President Diane Quarrie, the North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie, South Island Club Captain Alon Mayhew, plus Kevin Clarkson Beaded Wheels Chairman and Partners here for the weekend. I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. The Swap Meet on the 4th May was another very successful day for the Branch, with another fine day for this major fundraising event. Without this it would be hard work to keep the Branch ticking along, so another ‘Big Thanks’ to everyone for making this day such a success. 8
I would like to say a ‘Big Thank You’ to my Branch Committee for their devoted time over the past year, it has been a great pleasure to work with such a helpful team, also the Parts Shed and Museum Custodians and Assistants and anyone else who has helped over the year. Also ‘Huge Thanks’ to Business that have supplied services and things for the Branch over the year. It looks like you will have to put up with me for another term in the Chair and I look forward to working with everyone again, Thanks a lot. PARTS SHED REPORT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 20TH JUNE 2019 The Parts Shed has had another good year. Sales have been steady with donations of parts and cars to sell. The Swap Meet this year has had better sales than last year. The building has been painted and is looking good and tidy. Thanks to the staff for their support and help during the year. The Museum is going well. There has been more interest in the cars by some of the owners. The Willys has now gone (at Easter), replaced by a Bertone (Fiat) X19. David Page has also shown recent interest coming down last Saturday to clean his car and work on the flat tyre. The New Pick has been sold to John Stewart (of Stewarts Classic Cars) of Christchurch and should go in the next 1-2 weeks. Good visitor numbers during Swap meet. The LED light bulbs have now arrived and will be installed shortly. The worrying thing at present is the borer that have been discovered in the front beams of the veranda of the building. Trevor Begg is on the case with this and it will be discussed at committee. Otherwise all OK, I will get onto the signage and stands on my return. Swap Meet: A very good Swap meet this year, with approximately 4000 people attending extra sites were also sold. For 2020 ½ the sites have already been sold with an idea of increasing the number of sites for 2021 Grounds report; Grounds very tidy after the Swap meet, now just general maintenance. Club Captain; June Solstice Run is coming together. The Wheels Week Rotary run over 150 vehicles attended. July runs to be confirmed. Easter Rally report; Final report will be submitted when Colin returns from holiday Wheels Week; Has been very successful with the weather playing its part. Good numbers of participants and supporters have been recorded Health & Safety; There were no incidents or accidents reported for the month.

An idea for a future club run was tabled; a run to CHCH to look around Ronald McDonald House, to make an entry fee per vehicle and donate to Ronald McDonald House, this could be combined with another interesting visit. Garage Raid, August 10th, Ashburton to host this year. Daffodil Day, August 25th, we will again be holding a Show and Shine like last year at the club grounds Farmers Day Out, July 14th, we have been asked to display an assortment of cars for this event at the Ashburton Racecourse run by Farm Source. Annual Dinner Guest Speaker has been confirmed, Jock Ross Thank you letters to be sent to Ryal Bush and Claas Harvest Centre for the use of the grounds and tractor and also to the Guardsman. North Island Tour 2020 Expressions of interest are invited from those interested in attending a tour of the lower North Island in March 2020. The tour is intended for only Veteran class vehicles and Vintage class vehicles which are equipped with only rear wheel brakes and routes will be suitable for single cylinder vehicles. The Garage Raid is on 10th August. This year it is Ashburton’s turn to host this day, starting with a cuppa from 9am,then leaving at 10am, so please keep this day free. The Annual Dinner is on the 18th July at the MSA again. The guest speaker is Jock Ross speaking about his Rugby life etc., plus the presentation of long service awards. Starting at 6pm for Drinks and 6.30pm for meals, this will be the last one at the MSA as it will be closed for alterations. Club Night was on the 16th May with Jim Heath and his wife talking about Antiques and giving us some prices for things that we brought along. This was a very enjoyable evening with a good turnout of 35 members. Ashburton Christian School 15th May approx. 11 Vehicles went there for about 1hr for their Wheels Day, thanks to those members that went along. South Canterbury Branch PV/PWV/P60/P80 Run was held on the 19th May there was only Les & Marie Bennett, Joe Barker and his daughter and Craig & Myself there, with the Bennett’s bringing home a placing.

Veteran & Vintage Tour from Ashburton to Hanmer. There were 28 cars registered for Diane Ross’s tour, coming from Auckland, Whakatane and as far south as Invercargill with only 4 not making the grade. On 6th May we headed off from Ashburton and travelled mainly on back roads to Temuka, through Timaru and onto Gavin & Marilyn Ladbrooks, to check out their workshop and collection of cars, and our lunch stop. More lovely back roads to Waimate, and a lovely meal at the Café on Queen. Next day woke to a cool, cloudy day. Our drive took us over the Dansey’s Pass, where a couple of cars boiled, but they had time to cool down while we lunched at the Danseys Hotel, and then onto Cromwell. Once we were all settled into our Motels it was off to the Victoria Arms Hotel for Happy Hour and Dinner. At dinner Diane, being Piped in by John Campbell from Timaru, brought in Robb’s 80th Birthday cake. Robb also received some comical presents which caused much laughter. The next day was a free one to do as you wished, but happy hour and finger tea was at the Cromwell VCC clubrooms where we could view the parts sheds. A video was played of the 2001 Rally held in Cromwell and several of the folk on the tour saw themselves joining in the activities and reflecting on the fun they had. The next day was off at one’s own time and stop to look at whatever you wished to. We struck some very heavy rain just off the Pass, which made the waterfalls look great. Once settled into our Motels it was off to the Hard Antler for beautiful meals. John brought along his bagpipes again and the entertainment started. A women from the lounge got up and did the Highland fling. Later one of the Bar staff came and did a couple of Scottish dances and then played the bagpipes beautifully. It was a really entertaining evening. Friday morning was off to Hokitika in good weather. At Fox Glacier we were informed of a shed to look at with many cars and motor bikes consisting of, Model A, three Mustangs, and others. Happy hour and evening meal was at the Ocean View Restaurant. Saturday was a free morning. Meeting at the motels at 1pm we drove out to the Hokitika Gorge with a stop for a photo shoot, in Kowhitirangi, of the cars in front of the memorial for the policemen that Stanley Graham shot back in 1941. 28
It was overcast at the Gorge and the river dirty, but most people walked to the swing bridge. On the way back it was a drive through the Kowhitirangi and Kokatahi Valleys. Next meeting place was the Hokitika Heritage Park to look at all their displays and to see the big motors start up. One of the motors used to drive the Houston sawmill in Hari Hari. Sunday dawned overcast for our drive to Hanmer. It was wet at Blackball and Reefton. Many coffee and second hand shops were visited. Our final dinner was at 5 Stags Restaurant, where Rob received another 80th birthday cake from his son Ashley and family and a book “This is my Life” from some VCC members whom had been on many of Diane’s runs. Pumpkin Bake
Ingredients 800gm cooked Pumpkin 2 eggs 1/2 Cup Cream 1/2 Cup Milk 1/2 tsp Ground Cardamon (or Cinnamon) 1/2 tsp Salt Freshly ground Pepper to taste 2 Cups Grated Tasty Cheese Method Weigh Pumpkin before cooking (minus skin and seeds). Lightly mash Pumpkin after cooking and put in buttered/oiled casserole dish. Do NOT smooth the surface completely. Beat eggs, cream and milk together with a fork. Add Cardamon, salt and pepper. Pour this evenly over the pumpkin and top with grated cheese. Bake @ 200°C for 20-25 minutes or until custard is set, the mixture has puffed up and the top is brown. (Serve as soon as possible, as deflates on standing. This is a family favourite and often used when entertaining.
Nutri-Grain Nuts and Bolts
Tasty, crunchy treats that keeps well in an airtight container. Be aware that this contains Peanuts/Cashews so make sure no one is allergic. Ingredients: 250gm Butter 2tsp Worcester Sauce 1/2tsp Cayenne Pepper 500gms Nutri-Grain
2tbsp Oil 1tsp Garlic Salt 1tsp Paprika 500gms Salted Nuts
Method: Melt butter and oil together over low heat. Add sauce, garlic, salt, paprika to butter/oil mixture. Spread Nutri-Grain and nuts evenly in large dish. Pour butter/oil mixture over grain mixture and bake in slow oven 125°C for approx. one hour turning every 15mins with egg slice. Allow to cool before serving. Store in airtight container. 30
Parts Shed Report A good swap meet this year, sales were up a bit from last year. Parts sales this month, with some late swap meet sales, $195.00. We had a few lots of parts donated after the swap meet that people did not want again this year. It was also noted that people were arriving at the swap meet with no tickets, causing holdups with the flow of traffic into the grounds, we had a lot this year. Gavin Smith
