CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Well the South Island National Easter Rally and 50 year Anniversary of the Ashburton Branch is over for us now. What a weekend it was with 169 vehicles and 320 people attending it. We had the VCC National President Diane Quarrie, South Island Club Captain Alon Mayhew, North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie, Beaded Wheels Chairman Kevin Clarkson and partners with us. I would like to thank them all for attending this weekend. Also thanks a lot to Donald & Carol Williamson for accommodating some of them at Coniston, plus Colin Sweetman lending the Quarries a Daimler for the weekend. It all started on Friday at 2.pm with Registrations, then Saturday the Run, which ended at Methven at Mt Hutt College and the run home with four places to visit if they wanted to. Sunday unfortunately turned out wet so with the Field Test put off, we hatched up some questions that seemed to go down well with everyone. The main meal was on Sunday night with Peter Mac, MC for the night. Monday the Parts Shed & Museum were open, plus Colin Sweetman’s Car Collection Here are figures I put together from the Run. Short Run 38 Vehicles @ 68miles =2,584 Miles 4,159kms) Medium Run 88 Vehicles @ 88 mile = 7,744 Miles (12,460kms) Long Run 43 Vehicles @ 130 miles = 5,590 Miles (8,994kms) Total Vehicles 169 Total miles =15,918 Miles (25,612kms) At 18 miles per Gallon average =884 Gallons Fuel (3,345Lts) Also it was interesting to note with all these miles travelled there was no vehicle towed or carried in for a mechanical breakdown only one with tyre troubles and the only other incident was a broken windscreen on the way to Ashburton. That’s says something for the standards of the VCC vehicles well done. I would like to thank everyone for coming to this event and making it possible, thanks a lot. Also I would like to take the time to thank my Rally Committee for doing such a great job of this event, plus everyone else that has helped in any way, a ‘Very Big Thanks’.

Thank you to Barry Quantock for a great job as grounds convener and also Thank you to Alan Begg for all his work on the committee. David Oakley expressed his dissatisfaction with some of the membership's view of the Easter Rally Committee and it's work. It was noted that some members had raised questions as to the process of choosing the rally venue and other decisions. Motion, The Rally Committee be disbanded and a new committee nominated, Moved D Oakley/P Ralston. Discussion required. WEEKEND AWAY 24th MARCH 2019 We assembled at Oxford for lunch on Friday 22nd March and then proceeded on to visit Noel Miles ‘Nga Pari’ property inland from Oxford to view his collection of countless ( about 50) Caterpillar tractors, bulldozers, graders and traction engines in various states of repair.

At NOEL MILES’ place From here we travelled on various roads through Rangiora to our accommodation at Delhaven Motels in Amberley. In the group there were 5 top downs, 5 sedans, ( mainly model A’s) 2 trucks, and 2 moderns. Next morning which was grey and foggy in places we motored to Greta Valley township and proceeded down to Motunau Beach, a place we had always planned to visit but never had and saw a couple of boats returning from early morning fishing at sea, lots of well kept baches with great views out to sea. After a brief stop we travelled on the coastal road through the Blythe Valley and were amazed at the excellent condition of all the stock in the paddocks. We pulled in to Napenape coastal reserve for a cuppa and Roger discovered his water pump had sprung a leak. Suitable packing was produced and we were soon on our way again to Gore Bay for a lunch stop after viewing the Hurunui Mouth and Cathedral Cliffs. 14
On to Cheviot, Leamington, the Kaiwara Road and over the Lowery Peaks Road to Culverden. The roads were good, very dusty with gates to be opened and shut. Day 3 we motored to Waikari where Joe had the misfortune of a broken windscreen at the Waipara turn off from a flying stone ending his tour. At Harwarden we explored Ray Millers workshop and his magnificent collection of beautifully restored vintage cars plus his works in progress. Our next destination was via Masons Flat and Virginia Road to the Williamson’s Mt Whitnow Station. Donald and Carol made us welcome and explained the history of the property before escorting us out through some of the property where we saw the challenges of development they were undertaking. We admired the lovely countryside, native bush and scenery of the back country. A very peaceful place. Thank you to David and Marion for organising such an interesting trip. Ten years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Wetherspoon’s in Uxbridge because there was plenty of parking, they could dine in peace and quiet with no loud music, and it was good value for money. Ten years later, at age 70, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would meet at Wetherspoon’s in Uxbridge because the restaurant was wheelchair accessible and had a toilet for the disabled. Ten years later, at age 80, the friends discussed where they should meet for lunch. North Island Tour 2020 Expressions of interest are invited from those interested in attending a tour of the lower North Island in March 2020. The tour is intended for only Veteran class vehicles and vintage class vehicles which are equipped with only rear wheel brakes, and routes will be suitable for single cylinder vehicles. A Wheel and a Hubcap Early in 2018 Ollie Hurst hatched a plan. He wanted to take his fleet of cars out to a place called Barrhill for a photo shoot. But first he had to complete the latest one so this gave him a goal. Barrhill is a special place for him as he and all his brothers and sister grew up there and they all ended up with various cars, trucks, tractors, motorbikes, pushbikes and horses. Cars were really Ollies passion and he can recall probably all the cars and trucks he once owned.
One day back in 1959 he bought a 1932 Coupe for £80 from the local Ford dealer which was Gluyas Ford. Ollie took the chance to use the coupe for a truck as well by removing the boot lid and fitting a deck in its place which came in handy while moving a house from Lauriston to Methven. In those days there were different number plates for cars or trucks. The local cop questioned Ollie one day about which type of vehicle it was and asked him to take the deck out. This meant he had to come into town in the dark whenever he needed to use the truck. After selling it, it got turned into Ashburton’s first hot rod being a 1932 5 window coupe which after a lot of years he found it was up for sale but sadly missed out on buying it back. It has recently been put back on the market but it’s worth a whole lot more than £80 now. Over the years he restored a 1928 Chev 2 door sedan and a 1930 Model A Roadster. Both are still going well today in the hands of new owners. But after an out on an adventure with the late John Copland he chanced upon a wheel and a hubcap off a 1932 B4 Ford (4 cylinder) car. He turned to John and said “I’m going to turn this into a complete car”. Most people except John thought this as impossible. Well it’s early 2019 and at the end of last year Ollie had just completed his 6th 1932 Ford restoration and the date was set for the photoshoot on 30 December at Barrhill. Ollie organised his daughter Wendy, daughter in law Liz, son Andy, brother Keith, Tony, Boyd and Struan to be on hand to drive the fleet out to Barrhill with help and support of friends and relatives. A photo was recreated of some the Hurst boys and their cars parked between the two original trees which are still there. An original photo taken in the early 1950’s was on hand to compare. 18

Not far from that was a large tree that was about opposite the house that his 12 brothers and sisters and himself grew up in. Ollie’s son Andy bought out their Model T truck to recreate an event that the Hurst boys did quite regularly, which was to put an endless chain over a strong branch in the very same tree that they swapped engines out of cars back in the day. Well what a turnout with family, friends and members of the Vintage Car Club all there with cameras going flat out. This and a new opportunity for all to drive or be driven around Barrhill in these cars made for a great day which will be remembered forever and one that might well be the start of an annual event. 2019 NATIONAL EASTER RALLY Well, it’s all over now – what a great weekend and our Branch’s thanks to all who attended, helped and generally had a great time. The overall sense of camaraderie was something to be experienced. It all started back in September 2017 when the organising committee had its first meeting, it met a total of 20 times. Just looking back over the minutes, it is incredible what needed to be done and achieved. Thanks to all of our members who stepped up willingly to take on jobs when requested (and not requested). Over the preceding week, the rally committee was sweating on the long and short range weather forecasts and it turned out that for Friday and Saturday they had nothing to worry about. Friday registration was fine with entrants coming in and staying to enjoy continuous tea, coffee and hot cross buns. Although the registration was over a four day period, at one stage we had in excess of 200 people catching up and making new friends. This really set the tone for the weekend. Saturday dawned fine to a collective sigh of relief and Chairman Trevor gave the entrants a comprehensive briefing before they set off over three rally routes to converge on Mt Hutt College in Methven for lunch. The weather improved along the way and an extremely pleasant lunch was held in the school grounds in over 20 degree temperatures 21
After lunch, the rally motored to Barrhill and then to view Anthony Hampton’s impressive collection of Massey Ferguson tractors and onto Bruce McIlroy’s Bentley and Rolls Royce Service Centre. Saturday night’s dinner was a fill your own selection of bread rolls with as much as you could eat over a two-hour period. Seconds and Thirds were encouraged by the caterer who told us that the most that someone has ever managed was seven portions. We fell well short of that record. We then moved onto ‘Its in the Boot’, which drew a number of lucky entrants to an ‘Its in the Bag’ scenario compered by Bernard Egan and assisted by Anne Hart where winners won a selection of motoring related prizes. Overnight Saturday and Sunday morning, the weather broke and we recorded 32mm of rain. Unfortunately, this necessitated a slight change to the programme and the Field Tests were conducted inside as a series of questions. We were also able to maneuver the concours cars under cover and this and the Pride of Ownership judging continued as planned.
With 300 people inside the Racecourse building, we didn’t need too many heaters and at times the cumulative conversations were very loud, but it was great to see the friendliness of people meeting up for the first time. This time together, although unplanned, turned out to be one of the highlights of the rally. Sunday night dinner was well MC’d by our local radio personality Peter McQuarters (Peter Mac) who has a syndicated afternoon show on Hokanui Radio. 22
The 50 year anniversary of our branch cake was cut by Diane Quarrie (National President) and Diane Ross (Branch Patron) and members then enjoyed a piece along with their dessert. Diane Quarrie also presented our branch with a certificate to commemorate our 50 years. The major prizes were then presented including for the first time a Pride of Ownership Award; 1st place of which was presented to the owner of a 1930 Austin Post Office Van. Fittingly the owner was dressed in a full Postman’s uniform, complete with cap. It is hoped that this popular category can be continued at future rallies. Monday morning saw morning tea and the obligatory hot cross buns at our clubrooms and a further opportunity to inspect our museum and parts shed as well as a private collection. We would like to thank the 172 entrants along with their families and friends for entering our rally along with our sponsors. Noel is about to start ringing members re helping set up and help on the day. Noel will get the agreement original to you via Trevor and I have a copy in the Swap meet folder. I thought the working bee went well and was well organised Grounds report; Grounds have had a general tidy up, trees trimmed and signs cleaned, as mentioned the new mower is not far away. Club Captain; Looking at a visit to John Stewarts collection in CHCH, also as a possible winter run to look through Synlate Easter Rally report; 170 entries and still fielding calls, the cut off date was enforced as were limited to the venue size and catering numbers. All entrants will get a confirmation email or letter, Rally booklet is off to the printers and ad’s placed on Facebook. Wheels Week; Working with groups to get event details in this years brochure which is about to go to print. Health & Safety; There were no incidents or accidents reported for the month. Had an enquiry from R Galletly regarding the issue of his 60 year badge, our records show the Ron is due for the presentation next year, 2020. Mid Island Rally run by the South Canterbury branch attracted 57 vehicles, finishing up at the Gleniti Golf Club where several Ashburton Members won their classes. AGM, 20th June, books to be sent for auditing Annual Dinner July 18th, Jock Ross will be asked to speak U Hire has forwarded a proposal to the committee to display one of their signs on the front fence and in return the members will get a 10% discount from U Hire. It was thought that signage may detract from the over look from the road and another option of advertising in the Blowout will be offered in return of discounted items for future events. Radius Millstream event attracted 16 cars, a great turnout for a very enjoyable day, thank you to those that provided their time and vehicles. The Park Street event was also very successful, again thank to those that were able to help. Executive Meeting Notes, Saturday March 23rd 2019 Held at Miramar Links Golf Club Wellington It was noted there were several branches not in attendance, Waimate, Banks Peninsular, BOP, King Country, West Coast, Rotorua, Northland, South Waikato and Central Otago. George Keir from the Canterbury Branch has been appointed to the Management Committee. Horowhenua Branch is trying to confirm its southern boundary with the Wellington Branch. The Health & Safety checklists we should be using for all events may be made mandatory for all branch and national events The North Island Club Captain is working on the Highland Frolic, a similar to the very successful Irishman Creek Rally. There was another presentation from Greg Tyrall and Tony Haycock regarding the National Vero Rally in New Plymouth, apparently not enough information has been relayed to the members through their branches. Reiterating if there was not enough support from the branches future national events wont be happening. From the numbers that have already entered there were very few from the South Island. It was suggested that each branch use the skills for Tyrall and Haycock to make a presentation to branches at local events and club nights. Diane Quarrie mentioned that it may be a good idea to mention the Vero Rally at the SI Easter Rally in Ashburton A National Vintage Rally from Taihape to Napier 2020 will be run by the Central Hawkes Bay Branch. A presentation made around the amount of ethanol that was added to our fuel, there is a small amount of ethanol in most fuel and if it is less than 8% it does not have to be identified. There are accounts that the water left behind from ethanol is rotting fuel lines etc in some vehicles. The club is trying to get fuel companies to stop this practice. There is a FIVA guide of 42 pages that will have more information, a copy can be sought from head office. There is still a reluctance to change all WOF to yearly from 6 monthly VCC National daffodil Day 2019 was a success with $62,000 raised compared to $40,000 in 2018 Discussion was rather vigorous around the proposal that the National Motorcycle Rally be held in the same year as the National Rallies. Previously there was to be only one National Rally when the Vero Rally was being held. This will be amended to allow the National Motorcycle Rally to be in the sane year as the Vero rally and then be every second year after that. Wairarapa Branch will be hosting the event in 2021 The South Canterbury Branch asked for help to cover costs of a National Rally so the extra cost don’t get loaded onto the entrants. I left the meeting to catch my flight at 4.15pm and we were still not ½ way through the general business. A copy of the Executive minutes will be made available to members through head office at a later date.
