My mechanical episodes this month included replacing the rear aux. shock absorbers, rear brake rotors, changing/bleeding brake fluid etc. on the BMW. A quick search on the web indicated that it should only take ½ an hour for each corner. Yeah, right, keyboard warriors… Out of interest I found an old “flat rate manual” at the weekend and I’ll include cuttings from that at a later date. Sure I would be faster if I did this every day, and spent more time devoted to repairs instead of being “bookish”! My own result is more like this: 4 months ordered from the US some nice ESCO jack stands that help fit into BMW’s special jack locating slots. After 3 months found that the guy hadn’t ordered them, but luckily I managed to get some off TradeMe. ½ hour cutting wood blocks to drive car up onto to be able to get trolley jack under the vehicle – not enough clearance otherwise, even for doing an oil service 1 hour mucking about 1 hour figuring out how to strip out all of the boot lining to get access to the upper mounting nuts for the shocks 1 day discovered that the brake rotors were the wrong lateral dimension, returned to BNT and new ones delivered 6 hours to compete the rest of the job, including bashing the old rotors off (never changed since new and stuck on hard after years exposed to Wellington salt air) inspect parking brake, put back together, road test etc. Total time taken = 4 months, 1 day and 8-½ hours! Note: Wed Club Night & Sunday Run for June NOT HAPPENING as these are replaced by the essential and fun-filled AGM. Sat-Mon 5-7 Jun Informal trip to Fox Glacier. Meet at the car park Hawea Dam just north of Lake Hawea Motors 10am Saturday 5th June, coffee at Makarora, lunch at Haast. Proceed to Fox. It would deal only with circumstances of fatal crashes without the pathology, but there were a lot of interesting and relevant vehicle and roading issues that were discovered. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT The Arrowtown Autumn Festival Golden Times Rally went well, thanks to Allan and Alister. There was a good variety of cars both on the rally and in the parade. As usual the morning start in the main street of Arrowtown attracted a large crowd, who come specifically to see the cars. This year, with the run finishing in the lower car park, a lot of “non-car” people also took the opportunity to see the cars close up. All up good publicity for the club. Steve Gould, Manager of the Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground at Cardrona, had 35 odd members and guests enthralled on the May club night. Although I have toured around the site I hadn't fully appreciated the logistics involved managing the 17 separate test areas. It is a pretty amazing operation. John Martin and the National Veteran Rally sub-committee now have things moving and you will have received a copy of the rally poster by email. Thanks to those who have offered to help during the rally, as the committee is now full (but there will be opportunities for other helpers! Ed.) You will have received the AGM notice (is also in this issue of PnS) please get those nominations in. The Management Committee meet bi-monthly (unless urgent matters require discussion) with some items handled by email between meetings. It does not require a great time commitment and we do need some new people coming forward. It would be great if we have to have an election! Noel Hassed

Treasurers Report; Karelan presented the accounts to date, of particular note was the parts sales this year amounting to $6200 which reflects the work done by the “Wednesday” group who have made the parts more accessible. Also the increase in membership. Karelan made the point that the two formal rallies should show a financial return and that the organisers should present a rally budget to the treasurer prior to fixing rally fees. Sunday Run (16th May) – Naseby Twelve cars I think, 21 people had another good days touring. Fine weather, good roads and views. Omakau and Ophir for a coffee on the way, Lunch at the ‘Royal Hotel’ in Naesby. A walk around to view the old world streetscape, and some of us went on to St Bathans, where again another historic streetscape. A coffee at the Vulcan, and home by 6:30. All cars made it most running better for the trip, and a very sociable day. Graham

Club Night (12th May) – Steve Gould We were treated to a detailed overview of the operation of the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds up on the Pisa Range which you can see from afar when flying overhead. In normal times (obviously impacted by Covid this year and last year) the season despite being quite short (9 weeks), is extraordinarily busy with 250+ engineers, ~150 prototype vehicles, various tyre manufacturers and now also component manufacturers vying for a spot on one or more of the 17 different test areas. “Reconfirmation testing” in the real world is important part of testing. “Subjective testing” is where experienced drivers give it welly on a trail and feel how it responds. In the Northern Hemisphere testing is generally done on flat lakes, so having undulating trails here is a distinct advantage. There are a lot of snow guns to make the right type of snow. Making all that snow gobbles a lot of electricity though! The Editor

I am enquiring about hiring a car for my daughter’s wedding which is on 4th March 2022 in Clyde. My daughter wants an English theme as she and her fiance lived in London for a number of years. Also they are getting married in St Dunstan Church Clyde which was built by my Londoner great grandfather - he was a stonemason.
