Editorial It’s been a quiet month – hopefully there will be more reports next time. I went to use an aerosol can of clear coat recently and found in the fine print on the back of the can, “Not recommended for automotive use.” Rather surprising since the product is called Motortech and is sold in an auto parts shop near you! Be warned! On another subject, have you noticed that on many modern cars the front indicators are almost invisible from most angles in daylight except when directly in front? Somehow this represents an improvement. Sometimes the older stuff is better – in this case maybe from the 80’s and 90’s. Last weekend I attended what is billed as the largest annual gathering of Peugeot-only cars in the world. This was at Prescott Speed Hill Climb, Gloucestershire, established in 1938 by The Bugatti Owners' Club. A special place, and the weather was a balmy 34°C. Gerry Spencer editorCOVCC@gmail.com

Chair’s Report The turnout for the AGM was good considering there was a lot of snow around, this is important to meet the quorum requirements of our constitution. I would like to welcome new committee members Mel Wilson, as Treasurer, and Rose Grindley who has also volunteered to take our minutes. Thanks to them, the other returning committee members, and those who have made themselves available for Non Committee positions. The incoming Committee had a good meeting with representatives of Alpine Street Machines. After the successful combined swap meet last year we felt that we should look at other ways we can work together. They are enthusiastic and at this stage we agreed to share our respective magazines and event information. Parts donations continue to roll in including Vauxhall 14 running gear from Aidan Helm and a 1936? Oldsmobile from Cameron Urquhart. Donated parts form an important part of the funding for our branch and are always appreciated. I will be attending the national AGM and Executive meeting in August as our branch delegate. The only agenda item out at this stage is updating the National 5 year plan. Club night speaker Allen Hogan gave an insight into a non-car addiction, a sailing boat addiction (always wanting one that metre longer). His stories of hairraising, and more sedate, sailing adventures, including a two-handed around the world trip with his wife certainly held our interest. Allen has published a book if you missed his talk or want to know more. Gerry is still preparing Puff ‘n Stuff remotely so I will keep this short this month. Warbirds Breakfast
Our 1300 and an A35; I remember when they were new and driving them. At 35bhp they performed very well with a 948cc motor, but now this newlyrestored A35 has an 1100cc motor as does the Morris Minor and 40bhp! The 1300 is 50bhp but essentially the same motor and trans just ‘East West’. Another unusual discovery was that to get paint coverage, the Morris Minor has nearly 80% more body surface area than the later 1300, and took 4 litres more paint! Blossom Festival Rally Feedback from club members is that by tying this to the parade limits the rally. The Committee supports any improvements that Ewen wishes to introduce. Maybe a car display somewhere, as well – Clyde? Ewen to contact the lower South Island clubs to advertise the rally. 2.
Combined Rally As we are sending out invitations to other clubs for all of our runs – do we still need to hold this? Do we have a gap in our calendar? John to decide whether to proceed and, if so, decide on a date – maybe beginning of November.

Pool table The pool table is to be sold - $500.00 We will put a notice on the table, itself and on Facebook.

Planning Noel will take the material from the planning meetings to a clubnight for discussion. Ewen will project-manage closing in the ends of the porch – wait until summer, though. We will also put reflector tape on the gateway to make the access clearer in the dark.

Mailing Puff’nStuff Members at the AGM gave a clear indication that they wish mailing to continue for those members who already receive the newslatter this way. No mailing option will be offered to new members. Once Gerry returns, Rose will liase with him to investigate cheaper printing options – i.e. on a home computer. It only needs to be black and white priniting.

National Model-T visit – evening of 12 Feb 2023 We will organise a BBQ - $30.00 pp and BYO at Clubrooms. Graham to lead this.

Two significant Accounts to be paid this month: the lease payment – at $10.15 per member (160 members) is $1624.00 Insurance – invoice still to come. Mel moved that these be paid. Seconded by Gaynor. Passed. Club Captain No Sunday run in July. Speakers are lined up for July and August. General Business continued 8. Monte Targo Daffodil Day Rally Discussion about expanding this to include a Show’nShine. Would then lead into the BYO lunch with raffles and prizes with the rally participants. Helicopter trip is major prize. John will approach Highlands regarding another prize – e.g. a fast lap or similar. Graham to email Steve and Gerry with details. John to send around emails. 9.
Keys for gate A lockbox has been donated. Ewen will fit it to the gate. Keys to gate and clubrooms will be kept in it. Committee members only to have the combination.

Central Otago Branch – “Blossom Festival Rally” Saturday 24th September 2022 We have changed the format this year to hopefully increase the interest of the event! Entrants are asked to park in and around the main street area of Clyde (Sunderland St) from 8.30 am onward as a “show and shine” to let the public have a closer look at our cars. You can enjoy a breakfast or coffee at the many cafes in the area before moving on at your own time after say 10 am. The day is yours to organise as you wish. Entrants will be notified where in Clyde to pick up their rally packs and rally briefing closer to the day.
Those who want to go in the Blossom Festival Procession will need to park up at our usual spot in Enterprise Street (turn left at the top of the hill into Royal Terrace then next left into Enterprise St). The rally marshals will guide you. The procession starts at 11.45am. Parking is available at Bantry Street after the procession handy to the festival in Pioneer Park. The Rally format will be: You will be given a list of places of interest to visit (including directions of how to get there), with questions to answer at each worth points. You will choose which you want to visit to accrue the right amount of points. Points will be given to those who go in the procession and so that those who choose not to are not disadvantaged can gain points in visiting more or further afield places of interest on the list. Older slower cars will also be given points so as they are not disadvantaged. The event will end at the COVCC Litany St Clubrooms in Cromwell for a catch up and prize-giving later in the day and the opportunity to have a look through the parts sheds. The evening meal will start around 6pm at the clubrooms with “Fully Pitted” catering again this year. ֎

Nine Oldest Car Companies/Brands The first automobile was made in 1808. It was fuelled with hydrogen and ran on an internal combustion engine. Here, in reverse order, are the nine oldest car brands and companies that are around today, somewhat controversially, for as you can see there have been lots of mergers and name changes! 9. Cadillac Year founded: 1901 Founders: William Murphy, Lemuel Bowen, Henry M. Leland Country: United States In 1901, Henry Ford founded the Henry Ford Company, which was his second attempt at creating an automobile manufacturer. He left the company due to disagreements with financial backers Lemuel Bowen and William Murphy, taking his name with him. Murphy and Brown brought in Henry Leland to appraise the abandoned factory so it and its equipment could be put up for sale, but Leland convinced them to continue the manufacturing business. They renamed themselves Cadillac in 1902. The company was purchased by General Motors in 1909 but had already made a name in selling luxury vehicles by then. 8. Fiat Year founded: 1899 Founder: Giovanni Agnelli Country: Italy Fiat’s most popular cars often fall into the city car and supermini categories. They also began working on electric vehicles in 1970. Apart from automobiles, Fiat has also taken part in weapon manufacture. They have won 12 European Car of the Year awards, which is more than any other car production company has ever won. Fiat merged to form Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in 2014. Then there was one… In 2019, FCA announced its intention to merge with the PSA Group (owner of the Peugeot and Citroën brands among others), along with the new group name Stellantis. 7. Renault Year founded: 1899

Founders: Louis, Marcel & Fernand Renault Country: France Founded as Société Renault Frères, this company was launched by brothers Louis, Marcel, and Fernand Renault. Louis, an engineer, had designed prototypes prior to the company’s founding, and his brothers handled business while he focused on design. In fact, a year earlier in 1898, Louis had already sold his first car to a family friend. Renault began to produce its own engines independently in 1903. 6. Land Rover Year founded: 1896 Founders: Sumner and Spurrier families Country: United Kingdom Originally formed as the Lancashire Steam Motor Company in 1896 in England, this brand has been through many name changes over the years. The company first produced steam lawn mowers, and eventually made its first steampowered van shortly after. In 1907, they renamed themselves Leyland Motors. In 1968, Leyland Motors changed its name to British Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd (BLMC) as it merged with British Motor Holdings. It became a state-owned company in 1975 and then once again changed its name in 1986 to The Rover Group. Between those last two events, the Land Rover brand was formed in 1978. 5. Škoda Auto Year founded: 1895 Founders: Václav Laurin and Václav Klement Country: Czech Republic Škoda Auto was founded as Laurin & Klement in 1895 and manufactured bicycles, motorcycles, and cars in Mladá Boleslav, Kingdom of Bohemia. Since it began producing cars in 1905, the company quickly rose to becoming the biggest automobile manufacturer in all of Austria-Hungary. In 1925, the company was acquired by Škoda Works, and industrial conglomerate, and renamed and rebranded to Škoda Auto, now more commonly known simply as Škoda. In 2000, it became a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. 4. Mercedes-Benz Year founded: 1883 Founders: Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler

Country: Germany This famous car brand technically wasn’t officially founded until 1926, but it is the result of a combination of two other automobile manufacturers that have been around for much longer. Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) was one of these companies, its name roughly translating to Daimler Motors Corporation. It was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1890 and started by producing petrol engines. After the company saw success in small race cars, it shifted its focus producing Mercedes models. Meanwhile, Benz & Companie Rheinische Gasmotoren-Fabrik, founded by Karl Benz, Max Rose, and Friedrich Wilhelm Eßlinger, was created in 1883. It began manufacturing industrial machines and gas engines before Benz decided to focus on his true passion – automobiles, or as he called them, “horseless carriages.” He made the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, the world’s first gasolinepowered automobile, in 1886. These two companies merged to form Mercedes-Benz in 1926. 3. Opel Automobile GmbH Year founded: 1862 Founder: Adam Opel Country: Germany More commonly known simply as Opel, this car company was founded in 1862 as a sewing machine manufacturer. The company began making bicycles in 1886 and made its first car in 1899. Come 1913, they had become the biggest car company in Germany, and come 1930, the biggest in Europe. Opel has not only manufactured cars under its own brand, however, also selling vehicles under the brands Vauxhall, Buick, and Holden. 2. Tatra Year founded: 1850 Founder: Ignác Šustala Country: Czech Republic Founded as Ignatz Schustala & Comp., Tatra is owned by the Tatra Truck Company and started out manufacturing horse-drawn carriages. In 1891, the company branched out into producing railroad cars, renaming itself as Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau-Fabriksgesellschaft in the process. In 1897, Tetra’s technical director Hugo Fischer von Roeslerstamm purchased a Benz automobile from himself and used it as inspiration to make the company’s

very first car, called the Präsident, later that year. Their first truck was manufactured the following year. The company officially stopped producing passenger cars in 1999 but continues to make trucks, especially all-wheel-drives. 1. Peugeot Year founded: 1810 Founder: Armand Peugeot Country: France Peugeot first opened its doors as a family-run coffee mill company in 1810 and eventually began manufacturing bicycles in 1830, then salt, pepper, and coffee grinders in 1842. Armand Peugeot was interested in automobile manufacturing from early on and began producing cars in 1882. Peugeot’s first car was put out as a collaboration with Leon Serpollet in 1889, and it was a steam tricycle that was too unreliable for mass production. In 1890, they made a better internal combustion car with the help of a Panhard-Daimler engine. Family differences caused Peugeot to leave and found Société des Automobiles Peugeot in 1896. Peugeot Sport has won five World Rally Championships, two Intercontinental Le Mans Cups, two World Endurance Championships, and three Intercontinental Rally Challenge Championships. It is now part of Stellantis.
