EDITORIAL You will have seen the proposed new VCC tagline “Driving Our History”, which I have converted into the Latin language with the help of Google Translate and displayed on the back cover. Call it what you like: tagline, slogan, st r a pl i n e – the latter more likely to be seen on a beach, but also can be defined as “sums up the essence of a brand or company”. Of course we are used to hearing such associations from car manufacturers that tell us such things as 'Joy is Driving', or more precisely 'Joy is BMW', while others promise grace, speed, toughness, even love! I read Roy Hattersley writing in an article, “I always look at the advertisements first. They provide the easiest clues to the kind of people who read the magazine.” In doing so he discovered, for example, that “dream” was clearly what copywriters call a b u z z w o r d for most hot rod enthusiasts. If I look at the advertisements in our own Beaded Wheels, I sense that our membership is rather more practical and engaged in parts, restoration and events; however I think we can also apply the words “dreams”, “joy” and “memories” to a lot of what we do too. As I was flipping through an old magazine this week I came across an advert with “Imagine the feeling driving a car built by a plane maker”. Saab that is. “Who?” you might ask. Indeed. As I said, it was old. Not sure how well that line would work in the reverse, try this; “Imagine the feeling flying in a plane built by a car maker”! CHAIRMAN’S REPORT There was an average turnout at the AGM but it would have been nice to see some of the “invisible” members of our club take more of an interest. We welcome Gaynor and Chris Miller onto the Committee and also thank those who have made themselves available for Non Committee positions. There were a few maintenance/wish list items raised and the new committee considered those at their first meeting and will be actioning most of them. Regular speakers at our club nights have highlighted the need for a Public Address system and we hope to have this before the August meeting. The system we are considering has two remote microphones and is portable. As well as making it easier to hear club night speakers this will be useful for rally briefings etc. We have also been talking to the Council about approval to seal part the front of the yard around the clubrooms and across to the front of the tunnel barn and parts sheds. This would reduce amount of dust and leaves the blow into our buildings and also make it easier to keep the yard weed free. Roddy Maxwell has been investigating using recycled bitumen which we could get for very little cost. However it all comes down to cost/funding. We are hoping this project will meet the Council’s criteria for development funding from their lease payments account, initial indications are good. I am also looking at writing/updating position descriptions for Committee and Non Committee positions. There is always some debate as to what is involved/expected of people in the various positions and it would be good to have a brief description of each as a guide. As time allows I will have a talk to those involved and get something together. There was a good discussion on club night following the power point presentation on the proposed logo change. Together with the written responses received this has given a good indication of the feelings of our branch. I will be providing this feedback to the National Executive meeting in August. On the subject of club night, Alex Dempster proved to be another interesting speaker talking about “Crash Investigation before Crash Investigation”. He outlined his findings, as a pathologist, when investigation a number of fatal crashes in the Otago region some years ago. With today’s better road design and improved vehicle safety features many of these deaths would not occur. However it was interesting to note that the initial problem was, as it is today, usually poor decision making by the drivers involved. Take care out there! Noel Hassed

SECRETARY’S WORD VIC’s, yes it’s quite a procedure now if you do not supply all of the items requested, i.e. photo of the engine bay and of the cars ID plate and any other information; one photo of each and that can be e-mailed to me in PDF format, also the three identical pics of the car preferably from the front RH quarter, with size as in the form being 130 x 90mm (allow a 10mm boundary between car and photo edge). The car should also be viewed by your area rep (see contact details on p3) and signed off by him/her (it is a requirement that I’m pc on this)! Now as my teacher once said to me in sheer frustration, “you can get a Model T to go, why can’t I read your handwriting?” You CAN do it! We will be having a working bee to tidy up the premises looking forward to the National Veteran Rally in October. We have a small committee working on this, if you would like to help contact Murray Pryde. George Page and I went to Gore [last year] to view the field tests - it was a very colorful day! Expect to see an eye-catching Morris Minor around, as now have four BMC cars on the road. I will be bringing a trailer load of panels, guards etc. to the club parts dept. Monte Targo run 22nd August is a National Rally in support of the Cancer Society Daffodil Day. The cleaned-up version of the entry form appears in this edition, and I can e-mail you a copy on request. If you can’t work out how it goes, give me a call (evenings are best). It is different from the “normal” rally in that you get the route possibilities way in advance, and it allows you to select your own route depending on your vehicle, add-ons. I suggest you work back from the Clubrooms, sort time and distance, allow for a coffee stop and a yarn. Invite your friends, and bring something along for lunch and the raffle. Correspondence Inwards and circulated input from members on the new VCC logo, quite a discussion, the need to balance change, need to clearly identify our Club which now has 9,000 members and a wide range of historic vehicles and a wellrecognised current logo. Finance A donation of $1500 was received from Wheels into Wanaka for members’ assistance at the event led by Murray Pryde. Karelan has purchased the new door mat.

Dear Sir I have sighted an orb recently, and then subsequently I was informed that it was not a 3D ball travelling towards me, but a wheel! What I want to know is how the wheel got here – was a wheel ever invented in New Zealand? It is round. I am also round. I know that already, and I don’t want you to remind me! Also I saw an advertisement (Three Wolves) that promises that any name sounds better when sung. I have tried this (in the shower) with mixed results, setting “Vintage Car (Club)” to the tune of OMC’s “How Bizarre”, but I don’t know what key it is in. Can you help me? Club Night – Alex Demspter (14th Jul) “Crash Investigation before Crash Investigation” We were treated to an absorbing (and sobering) account by Alex of a study he did of 100 vehicle driver fatalities in Otago in the 1980s as Pathologist. The circumstances of fatal crashes were presented without the pathology, but a lot of interesting and relevant vehicle and roading issues were discovered. At the time there was no formal police crash investigation organisation but he received a lot of help from police viewing crash sites and vehicles (as in the photo below of going over a cliff). There are multiple factors contributing to any accident, and what was reiterated is what most of us know something about already, presented in three groupings. The first is that of the vehicle (type of seatbelts, front deformability, side impact strength &c.). Other factors are roading (insufficient run-off areas, etc.), and probably the main cause, that of the driver (alcohol, impatience, ignoring yellow lines, mental status, drugs, fatigue, inexperience). I think it’s fair to say that we all drove home slower afterwards! (and sober) The Ed

It is your responsibility to navigate a route for the points required. You are required to finish with 250 points, evidence of passage and places required (photo) or receipt. This is not a formal rally, other traffic will be using the roads and all road rules to be obeyed, and please be courteous. This is your route guide and scoresheet and must be presented at the finish. You can start planning your route, as soon as you get this.

What you need to get 250 points for example; you will need a road map, reliable time piece, plan this in the comfort of your own home, leaving time is at your discretion, arriving after 12:30 will be mentioned in despatches! You will need to clearly mark the route (e.g. circle Tarras) and put in your points at the brackets at the end of each line, evidence such as receipts must be attached, photo evidence of points covered may be asked for i.e. take a photo of car outside the Cardrona Hotel or beside a well-known feature or sign. This Monte Targo tour will need careful navigation as any change may result in missing or extra points the result must aim at 250 points on the nail! FOR EXAMPLE: A vintage car (100 pts) carrying an NZ Flag (20 pts), leaving from Luggate would travel to Cromwell over the Crown Range (compulsory) to Cardrona (50 pts) then Tarras (50 pts), carry one dog (20 pts), buy one coffee (10 pts) to Cromwell, giving 250 pts, around 220 km divided by average speed of say 60 kph = 3.6 hrs.

The club has 36 branches throughout New Zealand and runs a variety of events to cater for all our members: tarseal trundles, rural runs, hill climbs, swap meets and speed events as well as regular club evenings around the country for a yarn with like-minded enthusiasts. Our members share a common appreciation for fascination of age, the individuality and the functional elegance of vehicles from a by-gone era. Clubeligible vehicles include Veteran, Vintage, Post War, Post 1960, Post 1980, Commercial, Motorcycle and Historic Racing vehicles.

Central Otago Branch’s Blossom Festival Rally Saturday 25th September 2021 Rally entrants will meet at our Clubrooms, Litany Street Cromwell, at 9:00am for morning tea and rally briefing. Cars will leave for Alexandra from 10:15, where those taking part in the festival parade will park up in the Enterprise Street (turn left into Royal Terrace, at the top of the hill before the town centre) under the guidance of the parade marshals. The parade starts at 11:45. Those not entering the parade can proceed to Alexandra at their leisure. Parking is available in Bantry Street, handy to the festival in Pioneer Park (normal admission payable). After enjoying the festival and lunch you can head off on the rally in your own time. There will be some gravel roads but you will see some spectacular Central Otago countryside. There will be a shorter sealed route available. The rally will end at the Clubrooms with prize-giving and the opportunity to have a look through the parts sheds, rehydrate and catch up with other entrants. The meal will be arranged commencing at 6:00pm.
The Road Code is to be observed and all entrants are reminded to allow faster traffic to pass where can this be done safely. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle complies with applicable vehicle and safety regulations (Warrant of Fitness, Registration etc.)

National Veteran Rally Fri 29th-Sun 31st October 2021 CROMWELL, CENTRAL OTAGO This three day National Veteran Rally will be based in Cromwell, and is open to all veteran vehicles manufactured prior to 1st January 1919 including motorcycles, electric or steampowered vehicles, as per VCC Regulations. Amongst the highlights that will be on offer will be Cromwell’s Heritage Precinct, old gold working fields, vineyards, car and motorcycle collections plus many other Central Otago attractions, as well as meeting up with members of the Central Otago Vintage Car Club, and a final prize-giving dinner. You can order your lunch packs on your entry form, or alternatively pack a picnic lunch and bring it with you.

Rally Regulations This rally is open only to Veteran Vehicles as defined in the rules of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) (i.e. all vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1919). Eligible entrants must be current financial members of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.), and overseas residents who are members of an Antique Motoring Club. All vehicles must display current Vehicle Identify Certificate or Statement of Authenticity. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle is registered, has a valid WoF. Road rules apply at all times. When driving allow sufficient space for other vehicles to overtake, and pull over whenever appropriate.
