Another perspective: If say you happened to work in an office tower in Minato Mirai (Google it – its stunning) in Yokohama Japan, as I did for a couple of years, and if say you got off the train at Yokohama Station (5th fifth-busiest in the world and serving >2 million passengers a day), then the most direct way to walk to the offices is through the concourse of the Nissan World Headquarters. This acts as an event centre also with a changing display of new and old cars such as below; winning rally cars, and the evolution of the GT-R. Japan produced classic cars too!

Club run - Trip to Mandeville Fly-In Steam Festival. Family/picnic day out. $5 gate charge/adults. Aviation Heritage Museum – steam train running – vintage aircraft etc. Leave Alpine Aqualand carpark (Frankton) 9.00, travel to Five Rivers Café (about an hour from Frankton) corner Main Highway and Mossburn Rd for coffee, allow about half hour, then travel on to Lumsden brief stop to see Rogers Locomotive salvaged from Oreti River 2020, then on to Mandeville Airfield. Arriving approx. 12.15pm. Choices are Picnic Lunch, onsite café, suggest if you decide to go to Café it would pay to reserve ph 03 208 9662, or portable bbqs. At given time view Croydon Aircraft workshops along with any restorations in progress; there is a small shop onsite that sells children's ware, art and craft etc. After leaving the airfield, we will hopefully visit John Tremaine’s car collection (TBA). Travel home either by return route or via Tapanui and Rae's Junction. Everybody to wear VCC name badges to aid admittance to Resto workshop; be at workshop door at 1.30pm. This event will be on rain, hail or shine (Southland, so likely to be all three – Ed.), for train at least (air planes may be different). They will set aside an area for our cars to be displayed. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT This is my first report for the year as there was not much to report in January. We had a family Christmas in Invercargill and headed off to Christchurch via the south coast. On the way we stopped for a couple of nights in Hampden, walking along the beach to the Moeraki Boulders, and exploring the surrounding area. Talking to the Motelier as we were leaving the conversation turned to cars (as it does), I asked him if he knew who owned the nice 1960’s compact Fairlane that was in the car park the previous afternoon. Apparently it was his, and he invited me to visit his garage next door to see his other project. It was a vintage Buick chassis fitted with a Packard straight eight motor. He is doing a great job of it and intends fitting duel rear wheels and running it in hill climbs and gymkhana events. You never know what is right next door! We had a good turnout at the Christmas do; as usual it was a relaxed affair with a lot of stories told and a good meal, thanks to those that made it happen. The Wednesday group is back up and running doing great work around the clubrooms and parts sheds. The only other club event was the Sunday run, organised by John Wilson, to Como Villa Estate, interesting history, a chance to sample some boutique wines and a nice place for lunch and a chat. The only other thing to cover is about the National Veteran Rally. I was approached last year by the South Island Club Captain to see if our club would consider hosting a national event. Since then there have been further approaches, specifically about the National Veteran Rally given the lack of interest from North Island branches in hosting it. John Martin volunteered to act as Rally Director and a show of hands at the February monthly meeting indicated plenty of support. John is considering two dates in October, the 17th & 18th and 30th & 31, once a date is settled, and approved by the national body, we will be looking to appoint a rally committee to get planning underway. SECRETARY’S WORD To keep things orderly, I need to remind members to e-mail me regarding the following which I will act on over the next three months; Name Badges - will be making these larger and a bit easier to read. Vehicle Identification Certificates (VIC) applications - if not sure please ring me evenings. VCC stickers - I have a request and an offer to take this on from David Brewer, I think it could be some time before there is a new National format for the VCC logo so let’s stick with the successful one we have. Long Service awards - these are for 25, 35, 50 and 60 years. For 50 and 60 years a citation is required outlining the participation in the club, as quite a few of our members have started their history with other branches, a time Including joining dates any significant participating including committee positions and a brief summary of vehicles owned. The dates have to be checked with the National Office. (I hope to deliver Barry Wyber’s on the trip back from Scenicland.) Lastly I would like to thank our retiring National Administrator Julie Cairns, for her assistance to the club, and hope to see her and husband at some of our activities. Graham (Secretary)

Club Night (10th Feb) - Beau Trevathan We had an interesting and wellresearched talk from Beau about the development in Central and connecting areas of river crossings, wagon trails becoming roads, and later rail (and eventually its demise) from prehistoric times until now. (Remember that before proper roads and bridges, ferries and punts were necessary to cross the difficult rivers in many places, and for those that would like to do further reading I can recommend the book shown here.) It was especially interesting to hear this from a chap who grew up in Tarras, and has spent all or most of his life there. Beau recalls as a child the journey taking 1-1/4 hours from Tarras to Cromwell on gravel roads of course, crossing the Clutha at the Lowburn Ferry Bridge. There was no road for a long time from Bendigo to Northburn, but a horse-only track known as the “high road”. All that changed with the development from the Clyde Dam in relatively recent times, and now we have SH 8 speeding through there. Spare a thought for the pioneers when you drive around! The Editor

A WEEKEND OF RALLIES (Southland Rally 6th Feb / Combined Rally 7th Feb) Bernice and I headed south from Frankton on Friday morning for the Southland and Combined rallies also to see our first grandchild, born on Tuesday. It was a slow trip down with camper-vans, tractors and roadworks replacing the pre covid tourists! Saturday morning, a cuppa, natter and briefing at the Southland clubrooms and we were straight into a timed section, out through Lorneville to Kennington. We carried on through Rimu and Waituna before zig zagging across to Gorge Road, Waimahaka, Fortrose, Tokanui to Niagra and on to the lunch stop at Waikawa. Quite a distance particularly for the three Veterans: the 1908 Cadillac of Wayne Nicoll, Ashley Bell on his 1912 Renault and a couple of young people in a 1910/12? Clement Bayard (it also completed the Sunday run). Field tests were completed after lunch, with some success for Wendy and Lynne, (John had been roped in to judge the concourse). We returned to Invercargill via Curio Bay (and a close encounter with a large seal) to Fortrose then along the Southern Scenic Route, passing through my old home town, Mokotua. The day finished with a meal and prize giving at the clubrooms.

The Sunday Combined Rally was a bit more relaxed, questions at the gate (who apart from Americans would believe that Indianapolis Speedway is the largest sports stadium in the world) and on our way back on the Southern Scenic Route to Tuatapere. Following the directions to points of interest on the way, we climbed the lookout at Riverton, hunted our fortune on Gemstone Beach, looped into Monkey Island and visited Cosy Nook: what an interesting little place (I thought I had been everywhere in Southland but this was not the place I thought it was). After lunch it was across to Otautau (more roadworks!) around through Drummond to an amazing collection at Lady Barkly. The workshop had us drooling, everything from a sheet metal bead roller to a lathe and woodworking machines. He was prepared for anything from a pop up camper he was building to tow behind a four wheeler to a coffin he built for his wife! Then it was back through Winton to Invercargill for a much needed late afternoon nap before returning to the clubrooms for another great meal. After a brief prize giving there was a surprise presentation by Elisabeth and Fred Smits, Wellington members, who saw the rallies advertised on line and decided to extend a trip to Dunedin and attend. The Smits have travelled more than 180,000km around the world in their 1957 Mercedes towing a camper trailer. They avoid tourist routes, visiting some amazing out of the way places. A great weekend, fine weather and good company. The Combined Rally rotates around us, Southland, Gore and South Otago and is a great way to meet other members and see their area through their eyes. PROFILE - 1939 Chevrolet Master 85 Coupe Reprinted from July 1988
Towards the end of 1958 my parents sold out their ownership of the Danseys Pass Hotel and shifted to Enfield in North Otago. A ring from Dad one night saying one of the local engineering shops had an opening in light general engineering, with excellent pay & good overtime saw me in Oamaru the following weekend and a shift back home (after being away for 6 years) as Xmas came around. At this time I had a very nice low mileage 1939 Master Deluxe Chev Sedan and this used to sit outside the workshop on the main road every day. It wasn’t long before an old fellow called Davey Ester who lived just up the road a few doors, called in as he did quite often (as it turned out) told me after about the 3rd visit, he had in his garage a 1939 Chev Coupe which he bought new in June ‘39. Many people had tried to purchase the Coupe over the years & during the late 1940's when cars were scarce and a waiting list a mile long, he turned down offers of 800 pounds and more on several occasions as by this time he was retired and often went to the races in Timaru and Dunedin so he needed good transport. We had many a yarn at his place with Daisy his wife, she wore the pants alright and made the statement that when Davey would no longer get his licence I would have the Coupe at whatever I could afford to pay. Seven years went by and during this time I sold the ‘39 sedan & stepped up ten years to a 1949 Chev Deluxe, a very nice two owner vehicle with low mileage but had to repaint. Married at this time also & to buy a house the ‘49 had to go, I took a 1939 Chev Deluxe as part payment so almost back to square one except we had a good roof over our heads and reasonably good garage for storage. Down to the workshop came old Davey one day and announced that he was no longer going to drive as his eyesight was getting worse so "Mum said to come down tonight when it was dark and take the Coupe away". No mention of payments but this was taken care of when we did the paper work and the large sum of 165 pounds changed hands. I am sure to this day that if we had only had 100 pounds the car would have still been mine as they weren't short of cash and only wanted to see the Coupe in a good home. I sold the sedan so we were solvent once more and very proud of our investment.

This turned out to be the family car for the next few years complete with carrier on the rear and room behind the seat for the bassinet as a family started to arrive about now also. First WoF I had to replace a tyre & this was the last of the original Dunlop Royal Masters it came out with. To date I have fitted two new Firestones on the front the two rear tyres were put on in 1951 & 1961 so cannot complain about it being hard on footwear. Engine is still Std. 216 cub in. but I stripped it down at 70,000 and fitted alloy pistons and new timing gear, also checked the clearance on all the bearings and only had to remove one 0.002” shim on rear main. Diff & gearbox untouched but synchro is getting tired so may have to do something one day, time permitting. During the 1960's we had a holiday in Central Otago and liked it so much we shifted here in 1969 and so started another era in our lives. Before coming here with the family getting bigger I bought a lovely 1962 EK Holden Wagon which the girls called the Golden Holden on account of it being Yellow & White. This with trailer, a 7 ton truck and my mate driving the Coupe with the cat we shifted all our gear to Alexandra one very hot day in January. Around this time also we met up with Wilf Miller and I was talked into joining the VCC Otago Branch and the start of a rally enthusiast began. We used the Chev on many a long run through to Oamaru down to Southland etc. and eventually the time came around to do something about the paintwork, as it was very thin on the corners and there were lots of stone chips. With the help of some mates the paint was taken right back to the bare metal panel beating done and repainted as close to original as possible. Panel & paint by Bill Murphy, Cromwell at total cost $465 and fourteen years later we have the stone chips again but paint is still like the day it was done, thanks to a craftsman who knew his job. We have attended two big rallies the first being the 1980 at Rotorua with Wilf Miller as navigator and had a really great time, meeting a lot of good new blokes. Didn't do any good as far as rally position at about the middle of the field. Next big one was Pan Pacific in ChCh with John Cradock as navigator, this time we very nearly made it, in the low teen's in overall placings (buggered it up on one day.) Have attended all our own rallies with mixed results plus many in Gore, Balclutha and North Otago and enjoyed them all. Over the years the Chev has proved to be very reliable and has never let us down on the road and from memory a puncture on arriving home from ChCh isn't much cause for complaint.

Easy running at 45-50 mph will return 19 mpg average, but over that and you look for a gas station every 300 miles or so. Enough said anyway, we like it, some said they would like it too, others say it's just a "Yank Tank". "Thanks Yank". Regards John Loudon

FIRST NATIONAL VINTAGE EASTER RALLY 2-5 April 2021 ENTRIES CLOSE 19 MARCH 2021
Commencing on Friday 2nd April at the Club Rooms Redruth St, Timaru, with a Bar B Que from 11am til 2pm. Collection of Rally packs anytime from 11am til supper time. We have secured accommodation at Girls High for $50 per person, per night. They have very secure Off St parking, and offer bed and breakfast for that price. You pay for your accommodation thru your entry form. Girls High School is in the Centre of Town, Cain St, Timaru. One block off the main thoroughfare and close to the VCC Clubrooms. Friday evening we will meet at the Clubrooms from 6.30pm for an informal get together and a Welcome from your Rally Director Alistair Day, with a chance to get to know your committee. Supper will be included his evening. Saturday morning we will meet at the Clubrooms from 8.30am for a cuppa before we leave for our big rally day. We will all be together for our Saturday lunch before we travel back to Timaru and prepare for our Saturday evening. Your meals are catered for by our own South Canterbury Caterers, and they never disappoint. Saturday evening. We have a fabulous 2 piece band booked with music we are sure you will all enjoy. For those who prefer not to dance there is plenty of space for chattering, and there will be a well-stocked cash bar available. We have buses booked to take you from accommodation points in Timaru and to return you later in the evening. Please pre book. Tickets will be included in your rally packs. Sunday morning we will meet at the club rooms at 9.30 with a cuppa before we leave on our rally day including points of interest. There will be numerous places to purchase lunch at our destination, bearing in mind Easter has extra charges added on, so lunch boxes are a good option. Sunday Evening, we once again have the buses available for transporting you to and from the Evening Dinner meal, again with a cash bar. This enables you to have a drink or two without having the worry of driving home, or be concerned with your vehicle lighting. We have local entertainment for your enjoyment during the evening. If you have special dietary requests PLEASE advise us prior to the weekend. This is a non-competitive Rally weekend, but following National Guidelines, so make sure you bring your sense of humour and join with like-minded people for this, the 1st ever National Vintage Car Rally.
