EDITORIAL My participation lately has been interrupted by a box of Chevrolet parts that arrived from the States, so I’m working my way through that (amongst other things). Every working garage needs a nice oil-proof high-sheen floor, and so one of my successes for the month was acid etching my garage floor and then applying a two-part epoxy which is the “bee’s knees” apparently. This product was from family-run business in Christchurch, Regis Coatings. The result was quite good as you can see (other colours are available!) Whilst watching the drama “Goliath” this week I saw a reference to the children’s TV series and movie “Pufnstuf” from back in 1969/70, coincidentally about the same time as this branch was formed. I wonder if any of the older members remember the show? Probably not. It bears no relation to the working title of this periodical I presume! CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Another couple of interesting runs for the month; first was the Sunday “Fish & Chip” run to Jackson’s Bay. We left Frankton in dubious weather (not very confident of Graham Taylor’s forecasting skills) but it was looking better by the time we reached the muster point at Hawea. An excellent turnout, in mainly sporting cars and a couple of moderns, enjoyed a reasonably quick run to reach the bay, and beautiful weather, in time for lunch. Unfortunately there were a couple of casualties, the Elliott’s Jaguar engine management system stopped them after a stick got flicked up through the oil cooler resulting in an expensive ride home. New member Alan Baker, on his first club run, found his recently purchased Citroën light 15 was not too light on oil and ran some bearings. We picked up some whitebait before a leisurely drive home, stopping at the Thunder Creek and Fantail Falls before the 1/2 hour walk into the Blue Pools, where we were entertained by a mad Frenchman jumping in off the bridge. We got home about 8pm, thanks Bert for a great day. The second run came about after a CODC staff member saw our cars in the Blossom Festival parade and asked us to take part in the launch of the Central Otago Touring Route at Hayes Engineering. We had a good range of club eligible cars by the time we mustered at Ophir before proceeding to Oturehua township to pick up the Otago and Central Otago Mayors (Mayor Jim Boult had met us at Ophir in his wife’s Aston Martin). We were then filmed entering the Hayes site for a Maori welcome, speeches, wine, nibbles and the opportunity to see Hayden Padden’s E rally car. The engineering works and homestead were also open. It was great to see new and some not so familiar faces on both these runs, with that in mind I once again urge our “inactive” members to dust off those unused cars and get involved. If the events we currently run don’t suit you then help organise ones that do. There is still a vacancy on the Committee that we would love to fill before the AGM. Also someone to relieve Graham of the minute-taking duties (on the committee or not). A delegation from the Alpine Street Rodders brought a proposal to our last committee meeting for a joint swap meet, on our site, the day following the Cromwell Car Show. This ticked a lot of boxes for us and John Martin is going to liaise with them to work out details. I would like to thank the Management Committee for their support during what has been a messy year but one where we still managed to run one of our two major rallies and hold the 50th celebrations. On their behalf I wish members all the best for Christmas and the New Year. Remember as usual the January club night is just a casual get together. Noel Hassed

SECRETARY’S WORD The Christmas Evening was relaxing, enjoyable and there was a rush to clean up afterward! Cheryl and I along with the Katon’s, Martin’s, Pryde’s, Shank’s and Yeaman’s attended the Three Day Rally to Timaru via Dunedin. For us the first time ever to Moonlight and to Waikouaiti over the Ramrock Road. We came straight home on Monday morning as there was a lot to catch up on and no company for the gravel route either! The 1300 coped with the hills, twists and turns the gravel was mostly smooth and the corrugations little ones! If you were wondering what I’m going on about, the run was organised by Alister and Nola Day of the Timaru branch and well supported, and its good too travel new roads in good company and not having to organise it! Noel Hassed (chair), Karelan Doran, Greg Doran, Gerry Spencer, Bert Turnbull, John Martin, Graham Taylor from John Wilson MS&C Andrew Campbell and Paul Meesters (Alpine Street Machines) Discussion re a combined effort on our premises Sunday 17th January 2021 was considered to be a good move, with profits split from gate & site takings. Well worth supporting as there will be extra advertising and assistance on the day, we will run our usual pies, tea and coffee and they will have a barbecue. John Martin will be our liaison person. Set up time 8 am gates open 9 am. Previous minutes as sent out confirmed MS&C Chairman’s letter to John Loudon Site meeting with Brad McLay CODC consultant re Menz Shed Christmas Function (9th Dec); Karelan organising ham and potatoes. We will have for a raffle two Christmas Hampers. Karelan asked that more people make themselves available to tidy up and do kitchen duty. Trophies; The Tapper and Loudon Trophies, discussion around the awarding of them, cleaning the silverware, and possible engraving of recent winners. John Martin to investigate.

Noel appreciated the committee members quick e-mail responses to ongoing requests for information and assistance.

Treasurer’s Report There was a small loss on the 50th party (which is acceptable), otherwise the accounts are healthy. Karelan noted that the banks will not accept cheques anymore, from early next year! Further discussion re printing and postage costs of Puff n Stuff. Query as to whether Wheels at Wanaka could contribute towards the cost of their advert. MS&C Club Captain Bert commented on Thursday’s trip to Oturehua for the opening of ‘Touring Central’. The February trip will be to Mandeville (weekend 8) to the airfield, Moth Café, vintage steam train, visit to the DH restoration facility and a private collection. General
A new HSE checklist has been received from Head Office. To be discussed at next opportunity - Noel to investigate what is involved. A good safe ladder is to be purchased for general use John Martin will look into this. Guidelines for renting the clubrooms; discussion was around, if the renters include our members then $50 for ½ day or evening, Petanque $75. Latest use is 11pm. Hirer to leave the premises clean and tidy. Other use on a case-by-case basis. Noel to write this up to include in our club rules. (We will see how this goes). There will be more members applying for long service badges. There is quite a bit involved with 50 years, so apply to the Secretary earlier rather than later please. We will increase the size of name badges to 60x22 mm approx with largest possible lettering. The Combined Rally will be hosted by the Southland Branch February 8th 2021. Question about whether it should be free to our members as was the past practice, John Martin to investigate. It has been suggested that our branch hosts the National Veteran Rally in October 2021. To be discussed further.

CENTRAL OTAGO TOURING ROUTE – LAUNCH DAY A good day for motoring, public relations, socialising and it was organised by “someone else.” We were contacted after the Central Otago Blossom Rally by the organisers of a new Tourism initiative for the Otago Region, Touring Central, to attend their public launch at the historic Hayes Engineering facility at Oturehua in real old Central Otago. Ten cars met up at Cromwell and Ophir on the way, helped by their drivers passengers and Molly, to travel on really good smooth roads surrounded by great open scenery. There was a launching ceremony featuring the local iwi and the mayors from Central Otago, Queenstown Lakes District and Dunedin. The ceremony was to the point and presented an obvious enthusiasm to make it work. I feel that we presented the club as a whole in a very positive way. We also provided that alternative to Hayden Paddon’s electric Hyundai rally car which could raise a cloud of dust with hardly more than a whisper, but is it motoring as we know it? I had only my second outing in a Mk2 Jaguar 3.8 driven by Murray Pryde who used to be a stock agent in the area and knew the territory and families. A very good day.
