Editorial There are lots of entry forms and related material in this edition, so not much space for my ruminations sadly. Thanks to the recent contributors to “My First Car”, and I hope you enjoy reading them too. Naturally a common element is what is affordable, versus style and performance! In the total absence of any pictorial material this month, I have put one of the family pictures on the front cover, to which the following story relates: In the summer of 1935 (probably), my grandparents and family were on their way to Glendhu Bay for camping during the summer holidays (in those days there used to be only 3 families camping there!) The work and family car was the Studebaker, with a trailer was towed behind. At Roxburgh, right outside the house of a seed farm, a trailer wheel came off, the trailer flipped over, and they ground to a halt. However, the wheel rolled right up the front door of the house and “rapped” on it. Quite remarkable, yet didn’t cause any further damage. So my grandfather returned to Dunedin to borrow another trailer, and the rest of the family set up a tent on the roadside for a day or two (freedom camping!) My mother had spoken several times about this incident, but it was only fairly recently that I found the photos to tie in with it. Sat 23 Apr Arrowtown Autumn Festival - CANCELLED Sat-Sun 23-24 Apr Not the Golden Times Rally. Details in page ff. A Sutton Sun 24 Apr 10:30am Sunday Run – Tarras/Lindis. Meet at Tarras shops at 10:30am for coffee, travel via Tarras Church (a must see), then back roads to old Lindis Pass Hotel, picnic lunch, then make own way home in own time. We will not be going through the Shirlmar, Geordie Hills route, but this will still be a pleasant run; a bit dusty after the Tarras Church, but as long as we space ourselves out shouldn’t be a problem. Beau Trevathan will be advising us as well as a Tour Sheet (see page ff. to PRINT OUT & BRING). Chair’s Report Prompted by the disruption caused by Covid, the Committee took the opportunity to review where our Branch is at and consider our future direction. We decided to review our activities under several headings and to come up with some ideas to generate feedback and interest from Club Members. We now want to gauge support for these ideas (or alternatives), and some commitment to making them work if adopted. The headings were: Events, Promotion/Membership, Funding, Management, and Facilities. I will present them here in PnS over the next few months and ask for your feedback at our monthly club nights. If you are unable to attend club nights contact any Committee Member. I will cover Events first as it generated the most discussion and lead to a further heading Community Involvement. Current Events: Club night, we wanted to give Members the opportunity to raise any issues and suggest the following format; Update by the Chair Guest Speaker Open to Members’ comments on Chair update and general feedback We also suggest inviting Alpine Street Machines to join us once a year. Sunday runs, longer runs are working at present. Other suggestions: Have some shorter runs? Overnighter? Queen’s Birthday run as a calendar event? Annual Rallies - do these still meet the needs of Members, how we can improve? Note: those who volunteer to organise our rallies must be consulted on any changes. Golden Times (Arrowtown Autumn Festival) Well supported by other branches. Morning street meeting gives good public exposure for club. Maybe then go on a longer rally with those wanting to go in the parade staying around Arrowtown? The longer rally could be an overnighter? Blossom Festival Concerns that the parade has become a “truckfest” Well supported by other branches and many of them enjoy the parade. Expect a lower turnout this year (27-29 Sept 2022) Possibly combine the rally with a park up in Clyde? Moped Run John will discuss with participants and the organiser of a similar local event?

Daffodil Day - continue with the current format. This is the Club’s National Day, need to generate as much support and profile as possible. Public invited, any vehicle. A display of cars? Possible other events: Highlands event? Motorcycle rally? Night trial? Gymkhana? Hill climb?
All British day? Poker Run? Vintage only event, 1931-45 Irishman’s style event? Mid-week run?
Community involvement: Ways to raise the Branch (and Club) image. Park up at Cromwell Farmers’ Market? Cromwell Car Show? Visit rest homes? Some link-up with local Polytech and Schools (get younger people involved)? Note: Members apart from the Committee are needed to organise/help organise any Branch events/initiatives. We had an excellent speaker at the April club night, in Alistair Cook who was a logistics manager for the World Food Programme (a division of the United Nations). Alistair was usually one of the first on the ground wherever there was a humanitarian disaster around the world. The scale of WFP operations had us in awe and we could have listened to his stories all night. For me his scariest statement, about one of the areas he had worked in, was that it was the largest such disaster in the world...........until the Ukraine crisis!! Changing circumstances mean we are lucky enough to have two events on over the ANZAC weekend. Alan Sutton has organised the “Not the Golden Times Rally” at the request of some of the out-of-town people who normally attend the Autumn Festival event which was cancelled this year. You are welcome to head along to any part of this. Meanwhile Beau Trevathan is hosting the Sunday run in the Tarras/Lindis area. Thanks to both these gentlemen. Thanks also to John Loudon who has donated a couple of trailer loads of parts.

National Rally for Cancer, MONTE TARGO; $300.00 available for advertising flags artwork etc, Graham questioned the effectiveness of this in such a widely spread area it would be more effective if our members invited ‘guests’ along. Routes to be advertised in Puff ‘n Stuff. Planning meeting; ideas to be run past members at our monthly meetings. General Discussion re various media Facebook etc, frequency of Puff ‘n Stuff, discussion re the Puff ‘n Stuff name and origin, thought about a new name e.g. ‘Tale-pipe’. Graham outlined a proposed West Coast trip to Karamea, details will be emailed to members. Five year plan; facilities, repaint interior of Clubrooms, improve verandah area by closing in ends, new curtains, re-painting chairs and table, sell off pool table, dispose of bulky library double ups and magazines, do something more interesting with the posters, and dispose of old TV. No further sheds are required! Building security of tenure, too hard to replace or own our own building and land. Partnership with other compatible organisations? Club Night – Alastair Cook (13th Apr) What a speaker. We have had some very good speakers over last couple of years, but this would be the best. He is so passionate about the job, but as he took us along the journey, it was very sobering, and gave us food for thought. I lost count of the country’s he worked in, but in his words not places you would want to visit, as they are the “sh*tholes” of the world. His job entailed moving 100s and in most cases 1000s of tons of food, only ever dry food (cooking oil being the exception) - never perishable food - coordinating helicopters, fixedwing planes, and trucks. None of the products were on pallets, as most countries didn’t have forklifts, but labour always available. When a plane or heli landed it was discharged in minutes, then off again for another load. Some of the countries that come to mind were South Sudan, Ethiopia, Pakistan, but the worst of all was Liberia, rained 24/7, you were constantly wet, and he ended up with severe skin infections. Those of our members who were not in attendance missed an experience. Bert Turnbull

My First Car – The Blimp Noel Hassed My first encounter with a Hillman Imp was at secondary school. The engineering teacher, who also looked after the Harrier Team I was a member of, had an Imp. Whenever we travelled to Saturday runs he took his father’s Valiant with most of the team and I took the remainder in his Imp. The seed was sown! Our farm was about 20 minutes out of Invercargill so when I left school in 1969, I needed some transport to go in to work. I had a limited budget so had to balance age, performance and appearance within that. Faster than a Mini and more modem looking than a Morris Minor, the Imp was the car of choice. They have a rear mounted 875cc 42 bhp overhead cam engine that is based on a Coventry Climax motor. After a short search a pale blue 1965 Imp (The Blimp) with 29,000 miles on the clock was mine after parting with $950 hard-earned dollars. Well it lived up to expectations, it would do 80 mph and I tended to regard that as cruising speed (no radars back then!) It came with 155x13” radials on the rear and standard 13” cross-ply tire on front, so grip and handling were excellent. When nearing its cornering limits the bonnet would start floating, this was an indication that the inside front wheel was about to lift. The pivot point for the front wishbones could be lowered to change the camber but I never found that necessary. However I did feel the need for more performance and managed to pick up a set of twin Stromberg carbs and free-flow exhaust. The short distance to the back of the car meant the freeflow exited

forwards, connecting to the U pipe from a Zephyr 6 then back through the muffler. Driving on a frosty night with the exhaust off gave an amazing cackle as the hot gas hit the cold air!! These modifications made no difference to top speed but it revved a lot freer getting there quicker. It would do well over 20 mph in first gear before it ran out of revs. Working on the Imp was easy (unless it was a valve grind and you didn’t have a shim set to redo the clearances). The engine and trans-axle could be removed by disconnecting the half-shafts, clutch linkage and all the water, fuel and electrical connections. Then with the exhaust removed and the engine supported the back panel could be removed and the car wheeled away from the engine/trans-axle. Replacing a slipping clutch one weekend, I drove home from work on Friday night and removed the engine trans-axle then put the new clutch in Saturday morning and motor/trans-axle back in Saturday afternoon. All in time to head back into town for Saturday night! A couple of memories of things I wouldn't do now... A mechanic mate had a late (1963 I think) Morris Minor with the 1100 motor that he had hotted up, it was good for nearer to 90 mph, very annoying. I was heading in to work one morning along the “5 mile straight” (it wasn’t quite that long but that sounds more impressive) when away behind I see the Morrie coming. Now at the end of the straight was a very sharp left right S bend over the railway line, my thinking was if I am still ahead by then he won’t catch up before town. He was fairly close and I must have been still doing around 50 mph when I pulled the Imp into the left-hander, I had a quick glance as I pulled right and he was trying to follow me through, once I got straightened up I looked again and Morrie was coming through sideways. Next look and it was on its side beside the road, by the time I did a quick U turn and got back my mate and his brother were scrambling out the top door. All ok, the only damage to Morrie was a fist-sized dent on the back guard and a bent tie rod. I gave them a ride into town which gave me the opportunity to extol the virtues of Imp handling. There was a railway crossing on the outskirts of Invercargill with a steep drop on one side, it was rumoured that if you approached it at about 50 mph from the high side you could fly for a short distance, gotta try this! I did think about it before hand and decided the key to success was to keep the steering straight, so off I went, 50 mph and I hit the railway crossing. Now I can’t explain the science

behind it but it seems that cars fall faster than people and I hit my head on the roof. Before the Imp regained contact with the road the only thought I had was, ‘did I move the wheel?’ I don’t know how far it flew or if it flew or if it was just a bump but we did land safely and I didn’t go back for a rerun. Another more serious incident was in central Invercargill on the way home from work with a mate in the car. We were in the centre lane cruising along beside a row of cars stopped at the lights when two schoolboys ran out in straight in front of us. Now the bonnet of the Imp is not very wide but we managed to hit them both. Fortunately my reactions were a bit faster then and I had managed to brake and drop the nose a bit. One of them had enough momentum to bounce up over the bonnet on landed in the centre plots by my door. The other one went up against the windscreen on the passenger’s side and then slid back down in front of us. He landed on his hands and knees, looked up and saw the Imp still there and headed for the centre plots at a fast crawl. Funny looking back but not at the time! They were not badly hurt and the good thing was a Traffic Officer was in the line of cars and saw the whole thing (one of the few times I was pleased to see one). He gave them a bollocking that I hope worked, although I heard later it was the second time one of them had done the same thing. I always fancied the high performance Sunbeam Stiletto coupe version or something with one of the Rally Imp 998 motors, developing 120 hp and rumoured to pull 10,000 revs. So I owned it for a couple of years and put about 20,000 miles on it. I have many other fond memories of the Blimp, but it was time to move on and I had a low mileage Hillman Hunter in my sights… One of the fastest of the Rally Imps in action

Tour Sheet - Sunday Run 24th April 2022 Beau Trevathan Assemble at Tarras shops area where there is coffee, fuel and toilets available. There will be no formal debrief as this email covers most questions. Today’s run is relatively short and almost entirely on gravel roads which are what was common for most cars pre 1960. Take your time, stop for photo opportunities. There are some amazing views. The Tarras Church will be open, so enjoy a look through and learn some of the history. Picnic lunch will be at the historic Lindis Pass Hotel. Due to Covid restrictions and staff shortages there is no food or beverages available on Sunday at the Hotel! However BYO is acceptable. This will be the end of the formal Sunday. Make your way safely home. *** Munro Lane named after the Munro family who farmed Deer Park in the 1950s. It was bought by Matt and Audrey Cowie. They sold to Peter Jolly in the 1980s, who ran it in conjunction with neighbouring Kotiti which has been in the Jolly family since being subdivided from Morven Hills in 1910. Turn onto Church Lane. We can visit the Tarras Church, now owned by the community. The church is the home of the women suffrage kneeler collection. A visit to view this collection is highly recommended. From the church we travel onto Jolly Road. The homestead on the left is home to Peter and Debbie Jolly, who farm Kotiti. Approx 3km along Jolly Road we turn right onto Deep Creek Road. The first home on the left (not visible from the road) is Deep Creek. Deep Creek since 1955 has been farmed by two generations of the Whittlestone family and is now owned by Dennis Nyhon, who runs it in conjunction with neighbouring Long Gully Station. The next property on Deep Creek road we pass is Lindis Peaks which was taken over in 1940 by Chas Annan, a nephew of Nelson Young who acquired the property in a ballot, part of the original subdivision of Moven Hills. John Annan farmed Lindis Peaks after his father’s retirement until his untimely death. It is now farmed by John and Barbara’s daughter Lucy and her husband Simon Maling. At the end of Deep Creek Road we turn left onto Philips Road and travel over Lindis Downs. The homestead is on the right occupied by Gus and Rebecca Chapman-Cohen. Lindis Down was farmed by three generations of the Philip’s family, then Jim and Madaline Revelly who farmed until their retirement when they sold to Gus and Rebecca. At the end of Philips Road we turn left onto SH 8 for about 2km where we pass Nine Mile homestead before turning left (before we cross the Lindis River) onto Old Faithful Road. Nine Mile has been owned by Gordon Lucas for the last sixty years. Old Faithful Road was upgraded in the 1970s and used as a by-pass road during the reconstruction of SH 8. At the end of Old Faithful Road is the Lindis Pass Hotel where we have a picnic lunch. Hopefully Gerald Goodger, who has lived all his life in the Lindis Pass will join us at this stage and share some of the colourful history of this area.

“THE NOT THE GOLDEN TIMES RALLY” Sat 23rd and Sunday 24th April 2022
Hello Fellow Members, as you will be aware the Arrowtown Festival is cancelled for this year, which also prompted the cancellation of our calendar event, the normal Golden Times Rally. In the interim there has been some “normality” return to our lives and a number of normal participants have indicated they will still be bringing their cars and friends to Arrowtown to enjoy what the town and area offer. The autumn colours and general environment are as beautiful as ever so we have planned a casual / optional event for those who want to get together and enjoy our car friends, social, coffees, a nice drive, and a Sunday picnic. There is no formal entry requirement and those who don’t wish to do the tour can join for morning coffee, or the Sunday picnic at their discretion, but it would be great to put on a good show for the VCC and ourselves, so do come !! Here is The Plan: rd Saturday 23 April from about 9.45 meet and park up in Arrowtown (main street or Ramshaw lane carpark) Coffee and eats and meet at “The Postmasters” restaurant main street Garden set aside for us Percolator or Designer coffees at set prices and eats if you need Leave Arrowtown about 11 am tour through Queenstown to Glenorchy, coffee stop if needed go on to Kinloch (optional) take your lunch , Tour leader from Arrowtown is Ant Hanning . KARAMEA Trip. 16 - 20th May, COVCC This trip is taking the place of the “normal Queens Birthday Run” Organiser Graham Taylor 027 248 9942 gtml@xtra.co.nz. You can join or leave this tour when it suits you but I have to know what you are doing in case of a breakdown or getting lost, for instance if the first day is too long leave a day earlier and stop overnight at Fox Glacier or Franz Joseph. You are responsible for organising your own accommodation, again do this early, and let me know where you are staying. Make sure that you understand what’s happening, please call me well before 12th of May. Cars must be road legal, good tyres, and preferably in regular use to avoid annoying breakdowns, carry spare oil, water, fuel, first aid kit and a towrope! Accommodation is a guide only. There will be some roadworks otherwise good sealed roads. Side trips, some gravel, there are many available but will depend on time and weather!
Day one, Monday 16th May; Meet at the Hawea Dam 8:30 am Coffee at Haast 11:am Lunch Paringa. Travel to Hokitika. Bert Turnbull will lead this part of the trip 027 434 2339 (Cheryl and I will join at Hokitika).
