EDITORIAL
At the recent Club Night Bert Turnbull made a presentation of his father’s last remaining ration coupon for 2 gallons of motor spirit. There was a story attached to it as well. Unfortunately we cannot cash it in now(!), but thanks for the piece of history Bert.
As well as the Club events, we also have a couple of reports from events that members have attended; Highlands Festival of Speed and Wheels at Wanaka. Please keep the reports flowing in – it would be nice to develop some new voices as reporters. An opportunity exists for someone else to make a 100-200 word report on the Golden Times Rally this weekend – let me know. Space still is available in the magazine for advertising, either for yourself or for a business you know who you think might benefit from an advertisement. Autumn Festival Arrowtown – Golden Times Rally. (Entries already closed) Alister Stewart & Alan Sutton Tue 4 May 7:30pm Committee Meeting at Clubroom. All/any members may attend Wed 12 May 8pm Club night at Clubroom – Mr Steve Gould, General Manager of Southern Hemisphere Proving Ground as our Guest Speaker. Our club has extended an invitation to the Cromwell Street Car Club to join us to get an insight what happens up on the mountain. As you may be aware most of what happens with individual companies is kept very secretive, but we will get an overview of the general procedures etc. With a speaker like this it is important that we have as many as possible, to enjoy the inside knowledge. Please try and come if possible. Sun 16 May 10am Sunday Run to Naseby - those from Wanaka/ Queenstown/Cromwell meet at Club, depart 10am. Those from Alex/Clyde, etc. meet us at Omakau end of Springvale Rd 10:45am. Light lunch at Royal Hotel 12:30ish. Curling is possible afterwards on an individual basis. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Since last report there has been the Arrowtown Sunday run (reported last Puff ‘n Stuff), the Moped Rally, Highlands Festival of Speed and a couple of interesting club night speakers. Coming up we have the Arrowtown Autumn Festival Golden Times Rally, 24th April and our AGM in June. The AGM notice will be out shortly so please think about how you can help with the running of your club. We got through the past year with a couple of vacancies on the committee, but having a full complement of members would lighten the load and bring some fresh ideas. We now have formal approval to run the National Veteran Rally and Rally Director, John Martin is still looking for volunteers for a couple of tasks. The only other thing I have is to note is the resignation of Maryann Miguel as Social Convener and thank her for her contribution over the last couple of years. This position is now vacant and a good opportunity for someone wanting to help, let me know if you are interested. (See Part 2 – next page) Noel Hassed

Part 2 – Alcohol at the Premises Following an informal approach we have been looking at the issue of supplying liquor at the clubrooms. It is clear that selling liquor without a liquor licence would be in breach of the current alcohol licensing regulations. Penalties for such a breach are severe. This is not an option as it presents a considerable risk to the club and individual members. The committee considered the following options: 1. Obtaining a “Club” licence. This is involved, and expensive, requiring Police checks of the applicant, permission from building (property?) owner, evacuation plans, staff training, layout showing where liquor will be served etc etc. We would also need certified Manager responsible for liquor sales. Certification is another complex process, they need a Licence Controller Qualification and require experience in the alcohol industry before applying. There are costs associated with all of this and also ongoing compliance and renewal costs. Again there are penalties for any breaches of the strict licence conditions. 2. Allowing members and guests to bring their own liquor to functions at our clubrooms. Although unclear it seems that this is legal provided following factors are not present: • People gathering specifically to drink (which must be a substantial, although not necessarily the main, purpose of people attending) • Drinking that reaches a certain threshold of intensity (involving more than isolated or casual consumption of alcohol, in a passing or transitory way) • The BYO aspect being 'actively facilitated' (e.g. explicitly advertised, encouraged or managed). The Committee has decided against the first option as the cost to comply far outweighs the benefit to members. Option 2 will still meet the needs of those who wish to have a drink during functions at the clubrooms. We will also continue to have non-alcoholic beverages available. SECRETARY’S WORD National Veteran Rally 29-31st October, a committee is active now John Martin Chair, Murray Pryde - Secretary, Karelan Doran - Treasurer, John Gurney - Rally Route Organiser, and others have offered their assistance as required. AGM will be Sunday 13th June at the Clubrooms. Monte Targo (Daffodil Day 22nd August): the run sheet - which is also the score sheet - is in this issue of Puff ‘n Stuff. If you think you just want to have fun, come on and give this a go! Long Service Awards: I’ll be working on this, so if you think you are eligible i.e. 25, 35, 50 and 60 years, please apply. For those who are applying for 50 and 60 years, I need you to produce your own story when applying. VICs: When applying for a Vehicle Identification Certificate please download the latest form from the VCC website as there have been some changes and we need all the information asked for. The Area Reps need to check out your vehicle where applicable; these folk are listed in page 3 of the Puff ‘n Stuff. Membership Applications: While there is a lot of talk about on-line applications, we need to meet you in person and you need to meet us, so make the effort and attend a minimum of two club events. Fill out the application form which can be downloaded from the club website (or ask me to forward a copy) and I will attend to the rest. If you are a prospective member or know someone who is, let us get you on to the Puff ‘n Stuff e-mail list. The Wednesday guys (Midweek Muster) continue to work away quietly with another $600 in the bank from parts sales due to being able to find them. Graham Taylor

Scenicland Rally (West Coast) (18–20th Mar) Attended by members from our club: Beau Trevathan & Tony Gillespie (Armstrong Siddley), Euan Duthie & Keith Heideman (Austin A 90), Chris & Gaynor Miller (Riley), Gil & Ruth Edmunds (Mini Clubman), Graham & Cheryl Taylor (Mini 1000). Ideal small group tour, cars gave little trouble, the huge improvement was the Armstrong Siddley which is now capable of driving past several fuel stops. The weather was fine, the trip there to the Scenicland Rally via Methven was enjoyable, and all made their own way home after various visits. I’ll let the photos tell the story. Graham Taylor

COVCC Moped Rally (21st Mar) - Clyde 15 keen riders set off from Clyde, across the bridge to view the largest covered cherry orchard in CO where we listened to a very interesting talk on the technical side of the outfit. Then on down the road to the abandoned castle and soon to be planted on the surrounding land a few thousand apple trees. Also very interesting. Along the road we called into Three Miners Winery where we were also treated to an interesting talk on viticulture. Back to Lindsay’s for fulfilling lunch, then back in the saddle down the road to Alex to visit two places of interesting vehicles on display. Last stop to the Post Office café where you could wet you whistle and prize giving. Great day had by all and thank you so much for your organisation Lindsay. Yours in rallying John Martin
Highlands Festival of Speed (9-11 Apr) – Vintage Racing It was great to see the level of interest for the event this year. Fantastic that we fielded 16 which was better than Formula Libre with only 10. It was interesting to catch up and get the views of the ‘first timers’ at Highlands. Some loved it from the start although had no idea where the next corner was. Others hated it until racing Saturday morning and then thought it was a great track. Weird given the wet conditions! Club Night (14thApr) – Jason Rhodes
We had a little talk from Jason Rhodes who for the last 25 years has been curating the collection of about 600 vehicles at the Wanaka Toy & Transport Museum. This stemmed from his father, the museum's founder, Mr Gerald Rhodes, who started his career with International Harvester, and then went on to establish his own car and truck wrecking business. Jason is pushing to get the last remaining historic airframes of the Air New Zealand fleet (and its predecessors) bought and returned to New Zealand where they would be repainted in original livery branding and put on display at Wanaka. This includes a 747 in the Mojave Desert, a DC-8 in Brasil etc. The Editor

It is your responsibility to navigate a route for the points required. You are required to finish with 250 points, evidence of passage and places required (photo) or receipt. This is not a formal rally, other traffic will be using the roads and all road rules to be obeyed, and please be courteous. This is your route guide and scoresheet and must be presented at the finish. You can start planning your route, as soon as you get this. A copy will be printed in Puff ‘n Stuff.

What you need to get 250 points for example; you will need a road map, reliable time piece, plan this in the comfort of your own home, leaving time is at your discretion arriving after 12:30 will be mentioned in despatches! You will need to clearly mark the route (e.g. circle Tarras) and put in your points at the brackets at the end of each line, evidence such as receipts must be attached, photo evidence of points covered may be asked for i.e. take a photo of car outside the Cardrona Hotel or beside a well-known feature or sign. This Monte Targo tour will need careful navigation as any change may result in missing or extra points the result must aim at 250 points on the nail! FOR EXAMPLE: A vintage car (100 pts) carrying an NZ Flag (20 pts), leaving from Luggate would travel to Cromwell over the Crown Range (compulsory) to Cardrona (50 pts) then Tarras (50 pts), carry one dog (20 pts), buy one coffee (10 pts) to Cromwell, giving 250 pts, around 220 km divided by average speed of say 60 kph = 3.6 hrs. This is an official VCC Daffodil day event A suggested donation of $10.00 pp for a charity selected on the day.
