If ever there was a testament to the kind of community we live in, it’s the Island Nonprofit Directory (page 18). You have only to look at the list of 150 organizations included in the print directory this year to be gobsmacked. That number — 150 — is 50 more than what we listed ten years ago.
Leave it to Vineyarders (yes, those compassionate characters pictured in Chris Burrell’s great illustration for our cover) to jump in and lend a hand, no matter what the need.
Many of our nonprofits are dedicated to filling gaps for the underserved (read about Martha’s Vineyard Sexual Wellness, or MVSwell, on page 16). These nonprofits are even more crucial during this time of federal budget cuts to medical aid, food assistance and education. But cuts to funding for the arts, science, clean energy and conservation mean that the nonprofits which bring us knowledge and joy — music, theater, summer camp, sailing adventures, walking trails — are affected too. (WCAI’s Mindy Todd is holding strong — see page 10.)
We publish the nonprofit directory so that we can share our pride, but also to spread awareness. So that all who are able to give, in dollars or time, can be informed about the nonprofits that keep the Island humming.
The word “philanthropy” derives from the Greek words for love and humanity. You don’t have to be a big bucks donor to be a philanthropist — just a lover of humanity.

During the cold, short days of winter, warmth and light feel just out of reach. But if we pause to reflect, we also see all the ways Islanders show up and care for one another. So if you need some mid-winter inspiration for connection and kindness, consider these books:
Lisa Ridzén’s debut novel, When the Cranes Fly South (Vintage, $18), an international bestseller and winner of the Swedish Book of the Year, is a moving story of an old man who, as he nears the end of his life, takes stock of the relationships that shaped his long life. Inspired by notes the author’s grandfather’s care team left for the family, this book, with its rhythms and intimacies of end-of-life care, is a profound meditation on empathy, atonement and mortality.
Another novel, Evensong (Atlantic Monthly Press, $28) by Stewart O’Nan, shows the power of community and chosen family through the actions of the women of The Humpty Dumpty Club, who help others where they can.
From sitting vigil to baking cookies, they demonstrate the many ways one can show up for those in need.
If baking is your love language, you’ll find inspiration for the next bake sale in Baking & the Meaning of Life: How to Find Joy in 100 Recipes (Harry N. Abrams, $40), the first solo cookbook from Helen Goh, Yotam Ottolenghi’s longtime pastry chef and recipe developer. In addition to her favorite recipes, Goh shares “how baking can bring us together and add meaning and joy to both significant and everyday moments.”
When you feel you’ve maxed out your capacity to connect with people, you may want to curl up at home with your beloved canine companion and dip into The Best Dog in the World: Essays on Love (Scribner Book Company, $22, out March 10), edited by Alice Hoffman and containing 14 essays by Elizabeth Strout, Roxane Gay, Chris Bohjalian and others. It’s “a love letter to the loyal companions who enrich our lives and teach us about empathy, joy and unconditional love.” Who wouldn’t welcome more of that?!

Thanks to chef Gina Stanley, the ArtCliff is a place for us all.
BY LAURA HOLMES HADDAD • PHOTOS BY JEANNA SHEPARD
When Chef Gina Stanley arrived on the Vineyard in 2000, she didn’t necessarily plan to stay. But what started as an adventure has turned into a life rooted in food and community, both inside and outside the ArtCliff Diner.
Not only did Gina take on a beloved institution (opened in Vineyard Haven in 1943 by Art Silva and Cliff Luce), she trained many young cooks who have since pursued their own culinary ventures. “I love hearing how this person or that person is doing,” she said in a recent interview with The Vine “Every time I see a Mo’s Lunch sticker, I tear up,” she said. “I’m so happy for them.” Mo’s chef and co-owner Austin Racine worked for Gina for years, on
and off, starting when he was 19 years old.
But running the diner has been anything but easy. Staffing and housing shortages have remained a challenge, in addition to maintenance and being a solo chef/owner. She faced her first real test in 2020 when the pandemic hit. She then closed the ArtCliff in 2021 for what would become a two-year renovation.
“ The pandemic and the renovation put me behind a lot,” Gina said. “The renovation was the hardest thing I ever did.”
After the ArtCliff reopened, Gina resumed running the kitchen as well as catering private events. Her boyfriend
Vincent Patricola relocated to the Island, which allowed her to be open to another opportunity: the Martha’s Vineyard Museum asked Gina to take over the First Light Café. Since there isn’t a production kitchen at the museum, she and Vincent supply the café with a wide variety of “grab and go” items which Gina creates in the ArtCliff kitchen. She sends over baked goods, salads, quiche, soups, and pita and hummus boxes. Her homemade pita bread — baked in the diner’s pita oven — is legendary. Gina and Vincent also started a special Sunday event at the First Light Café called Sunday B-Side Bites, with Vincent spinning records while guests enjoy an espresso drink and lunch special.
But 2026 is a particularly bittersweet year for Stanley: the diner turns 83, Stanley turns 60 and it is the first year Gina is without her dad, who she misses terribly. “It was the most important thing to me to take care of my dad,” she said. And she is grateful for the community she met through caring for him.
“Island Hospice and The Center for
Living opened me up to a whole new group of friends,” she said.
Gina also managed to turn a small kitchen fire last fall — which resulted in a multi-day closure – into a muchneeded vacation. “Since losing my dad, I hadn’t been able to take time off,” she said.
Gina’s enthusiasm for the diner is irrepressible, and she has plenty of ideas she wants to implement this year. Her biggest accomplishment so far has been hiring Chef Nick Roberts to help her in the kitchen. “He’s super talented,” Gina said, admitting that his presence might help her escape the kitchen now and then.
The diner menu will remain the same aside from minor changes and daily specials, because Gina knows the regulars want what they want.
“We always try to switch things up, like put a new crêpe on or take a Benedict off,” she said. “But it’s hard because there is stuff I just can’t take off the menu, like The Bull’s Eye [codfish cake, two eggs, arugula, spicy hollandaise] and the sandwiches and
the Spicy Chicken Hash.” Gina knows her customers (many by first name), and that’s one reason no one minds waiting in line on a busy summer morning.
After a successful New Year’s dinner, Gina and Nick are planning themed dinner nights this spring. (More information will be posted in the diner and on Instagram @artcliffmsn).
Her beloved food truck will also be open two to three nights a week, parked in the diner parking lot. The temperamental truck can no longer hit

trailer in front of the diner. Gina bought it years ago, because the diner doesn’t have an espresso machine. “I want to get it open so people can have a coffee drink while they wait,” she said.
Despite the ups and downs of running a year-round restaurant, Gina has no plans to move on from the beloved Island spot.
“I feel like I’ve said I’m leaving since I came here!” she said with a laugh. But for now, her roots remain firmly planted on the Vineyard.

For more than 20 years, Mindy Todd has been one of the most trusted and recognizable voices on WCAI, the Cape Cod and Islands’ public radio station. Before arriving on the Cape, her career took her through television and radio markets from White River Junction, Vermont, and Portland, Maine, to Indianapolis and Nashville — experiences that shaped the steady, thoughtful presence listeners hear today.
As host of The Point, she guides listeners through conversations that move easily from the deeply serious to the seasonal; as the station’s news editor, she has navigated years of budget tightening without losing the journalistic depth, local focus and onair personalities listeners rely on.
On a sunny January morning, I saw that work up close from inside WCAI’s new studios near Beebe Woods in Falmouth during a live broadcast of The Point
Q: Watching you work live in the studio today, I was struck by how often guests expressed real gratitude — off-air calling you “an angel,” and on-air saying how honored they were to be part of the conversation.
A: I don’t know that I really take it in. We’ve been on for so long, and it reaches such a large audience, that I think people are just really happy to be here and talk about whatever their passion or message is.
Q: When WGBH leadership moved WCAI from Woods Hole to this beautiful location, there were lots of reactions internally and within the community. How have you settled into this beautiful studio?
A: It’s a really peaceful spot. Here the large windows look out on trees, birds, squirrels — everything moving around you. Sometimes, if you just
Q: What’s the planning and prep for the news roundup?
A: I’m reading the stories the different editors will be talking about. Sometimes I might suggest a story, but generally it’s whatever is the big news. I produce it as a giant newscast — bigger stories early in the show, and I try to end on a lighter note, a kicker, or some kind of human interest thing.
Q: You wear two hats here — overseeing the newsroom and hosting The Point. How do those roles intersect for you?
A: I’m really lucky. We have very experienced reporters, and they’re all so good at what they do. They have great ideas, their reporting is solid and we have a lot of conversations throughout the week on what everybody’s working on and how it feeds into The Point. If it screams bigger discussion, then we’ll make it into a Point program. We took Sam (Houghton) back from the Martha’s Vineyard Times and he’s on Morning Edition. It’s a solid, strong team.
Q: How have the national budget cuts affected the station?
take a minute to debrief or clear your head, even a quick walk down one of the paths helps. It’s almost like a meditative place.
Q: You’re such a strong listener — do you think that’s something you were born with or something you’ve learned over time?
A: Definitely acquired over time. In my younger years, I was probably not the listener I am today. I think you actually learn a lot by listening. We do our research, we have questions — but if you’re not listening, you might miss that little gem someone says that makes a great follow-up.
Q: You’re talking to listeners across the south coast, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket all at once. Do you keep those different communities in mind as you’re interviewing someone?
A: Not when I’m in the studio, but when we’re choosing topics we think a little bit more about that. But if you look across our listening area, we’re all coastal communities. And so there are a lot of similarities.
A: We still have financial pressures as we’re part of WGBH and we lost CPB [Corporation for Public Broadcasting] funding. There has definitely been some trimming. Our development folks have a three-year plan to address those gaps.
Q: Tell me about the pledge drives. Do you ever get pledgedrive fatigue? How do you keep it fresh over and over again?
A: The pledge drive folks lead the strategy, and we just follow along! The big bulk of our support comes from listeners, so ours is an important role. I don’t think anybody likes a pledge drive, but it’s a necessity to be able to pay the bills.
Q: NPR is often perceived as leaning more liberal. Do you think about that in your work as executive editor?
A: Coming from a news background, you want to get as many points of view as you can. People say that it leans left, but I don’t know if this is still true today. A while back NPR did a survey and it was like a third of the listeners identified as left, a third identified as right, and a third in the middle, or something like that. So, I think the audience is mixed, really.
Q: A community station like this feels especially important in a coastal place that’s a bit more removed. Does that change the way you think about your role or the work you do?
A: Well, I think there’s two things. We want to bring as much local content because people want to know what’s happening in their communities. And as far as The Point, where else do you have local conversations like this where people [in the community] are invited to join in the conversation and share their ideas and thoughts? You don’t find that a lot anymore.
Q: Covering the Jaws anniversary last year, was there anything that you discovered or rediscovered about Martha’s Vineyard?
A: I knew that [Vineyard fisherman] Craig Kingsbury was an influence on Robert Shaw’s character. But I didn’t realize just how involved he was in that movie. I never knew him. I wish I had.
Q: Looking ahead, is there a story percolating in our world that is about to break on a national level?
A: Oh, I wish I had a crystal ball to see

editor at the Cape Cod Times, we used to joke that all roads lead to Cape Cod. You give us a story and we will find you a Cape Cod or Islands connection!
Q: When are you coming back to the Vineyard?
A: We’re bringing back Pub Nights this
one on the Vineyard at The Ritz in March. It’s a listening event to meet the staff and the people who are the voices they listen to. They have ideas or thoughts they want to share about programming, or sometimes they pitch a book!
Thank you, Mindy Todd. See you at The Ritz!

The name may be new – Martha’s Vineyard Sexual Wellness (MVSwell) – but the 40-year-old nonprofit is more determined than ever to advocate for Islanders.
BY EMMA KILBRIDE
MVSwell is the little nonprofit that could.
That’s according to Suzan Bellincampi, who has been on the board of MVSwell — short for Martha’s Vineyard Sexual Wellness — for more than 20 years. Started as Friends of Family Planning in 1986, the volunteer-run, donor-funded sexual and reproductive health advocacy collective began as a group of Islanders drumming up support for a struggling family planning clinic on Cromwell lane in Vineyard Haven.
Forty years later, MVSwell is a cornerstone of reproductive and sexual wellness on Martha’s Vineyard. While it continues to finance the Island’s only sexual and reproductive
health clinic, it’s become a locus of support for organizations all over the Island, using its funds to support educational programming, training for new providers and even care for individuals.
“We are here for the community,” said MVSwell president Terre Young. “Period.”
Last year, the group decided to abandon the Friends of Family Planning name in favor of MVSwell, a name members felt was more reflective of the broad scope of the organization’s services.
“Sexual health is bigger than family planning,” Suzan said.
A common misconception is that
MVSwell is a reproductive health care clinic. MVSwell owns the building that houses the Vineyard branch of Health Imperatives, one of seven Health Imperatives locations across southeastern Massachusetts and the only clinic of its kind on the Island. MVSwell uses about a third of its budget to maintain the building and subsidize the clinic’s rent, charging only $850 a month.
With MVSwell’s help, Health Imperatives’ sustained presence on the Island increases Vineyarders’ access to birth control, testing for sexuallytransmitted infections and cancer screenings. In 2023, the clinic became the first and only provider on the
Island to offer medication abortions. Surgical abortions remain unavailable on the Vineyard.
Julia Kehoe, president of Health Imperatives, stressed that the clinic is some Islanders’ only reliable health-care access point. She said the partnership between MVSwell and Health Imperatives remains invaluable.
“ Their support is more than just financial,” Julia said. “They do a lot of advocacy, and they help us figure out what’s happening on the Island so that we can best respond to the need.”
Beyond its support for the clinic, MVSwell is interested in making sure Islanders of all ages and backgrounds have the knowledge and resources to
maintain their sexual and reproductive health. It’s long partnered with Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, often hosting a high school student on its board of directors to provide insight on gaps in young Islanders’ sexual education. Its Monthly Tide program funds steady access to menstrual products across the Island.
One of MVSwell’s more unique programs is that it funds individuals’ sexual and reproductive health care needs. Islanders can apply for MVSwell grants to travel off-Island for reproductive care, such as abortions or vasectomies.
For Suzan, individual support is crucial given the limitations of Island living.
“ These are your friends and neighbors,” she said. “It costs so much for housing and to live here that sometimes people just need help in other ways.”
Suzan and Terre emphasized that MVSwell volunteers are advocates, not educators or health care providers. But MVSwell also helps fund training for new providers, like Island doula Jesse Liotta, who completed her training with financial support from the organization.
Doulas do not provide medical care, but they provide just about every other kind of support to pregnant people before, during and after delivery. Jesse became a doula about a year ago, leaving her career in television after a difficult birth made her want to help others through their birth experiences. Now, Jesse is helping to close a birth care gap on the Island by being one of the few Island doulas to accept Medicaid.
“I saw it as an opportunity,” she said. “If more people can get access to this service free of charge, that would change the landscape of birthing here.”
Changing the landscape of sexual and reproductive health care on Martha’s Vineyard is no small task. Still, MVSwell is up for it.
“ These are people who are really dedicated and care deeply in a way that always blows me away,” Suzan said. “This group never says no. No is not in their vocabulary.”
But for those who work in the nonprofit and reproductive health care spaces, it’s getting harder to say “yes.”
Over the past year, the Trump administration has cut billions of dollars in federal funding for nonprofit organizations. The Urban Institute found that 21 per cent of nonprofits reported losing federal funding in the first half of 2025 while nearly a third
reported experiencing funding delays, pauses or freezes.
Simultaneously, the Trump administration has systematically gutted the American reproductive health care apparatus. Under Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill, clinics such as Planned Parenthood and Health Imperatives that offer abortion care are no longer entitled to Medicaid funds, which cripples their ability to provide birth control, cancer screenings and other services to vulnerable populations.
While MVSwell does not receive any federal funding, Health Imperatives relies on it. According to Julia, roughly half of patients Health Imperatives sees on-Island are uninsured, resulting in a disproportionate need for outside financial support from the government and private donors.
Though the state has stepped in to make up for federal funding lost, Julia noted the intensity of state support can’t last forever.
“We rely so heavily on government funding, which is why I’m really trying to increase the proportion of private funding,” she said. “We don’t have a lot to fall back on.”
For organizations like MVSwell, the pressure is on to help create a safety net.
“I think anyone who loses funding will be looking around to see who can provide more money, whether it’s us or it’s other organizations,” Suzan said. Meanwhile, MVSwell saw donations
Terre and Suzan think that MVSwell’s rebrand, or even its new electronic method of collecting donations, could have played a role in decreased contributions. They also noted that some people may be afraid to have their name attached to an MVSwell donation under a presidential administration that has shown itself to be increasingly hostile towards reproductive rights.
Terre and Suzan said the nonprofit space, on the whole, is only getting more challenging to navigate.
The rising cost of living, both on the Island and around the country, means people have less expendable cash to dedicate to charitable causes. On the Vineyard, an abundance of nonprofits unavoidably creates a “race for dollars” that is difficult to win.
“Our donors are locals,” Suzan said. “These are not the wealthy seasonal folks … so I think it’s becoming harder and harder, whether it’s someone trying to figure out how to buy a house or how to pay their mortgage.”
All the while, on-Island health care resources are stretched thinner and thinner as the number of providers decreases. Currently, Dukes County is federally designated as both a Health Professional Shortage Area and a Medically Underserved Population, widening the gap to be bridged by nonprofits.
For MVSwell, the goal remains
broader Island community. Last summer, MVSwell assembled a panel of reproductive health care experts at Stillpoint in West Tisbury — including Nyssa Duarte, clinic nurse and wellness coordinator for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) — to discuss the erosion of reproductive rights in America.
In April, the organization will host its annual lip sync contest, one of its biggest fundraising opportunities of the year. Also on deck is a new sexual health survey: a questionnaire on Islanders’ sexual health knowledge and behaviors, aiming to provide insight into the community’s knowledge and changing needs.
Terre said her work with MVSwell brings a very particular word to mind: affirmed.
“ To be working in this space is an honest privilege, and it’s a no-brainer,” she said.
Suzan called the Trump administration and Supreme Court’s systematic dismantling of reproductive health care “ridiculous.” She said it’s frustrating to have to engage in the same fight she’s seen fought for her entire life.
But it’s not a fight she plans to give up any time soon.
“It’s not a question of optimism or pessimism,” Suzan said. “There’s only forward. I’m going to wake up tomorrow and I’m going to try again.”

Stop for a minute and think about all the ways you interact with Island nonprofits. Make a mental list. (Cheating encouraged! On the following pages, you can scan the list of 150 – yes, 150! – Island nonprofits.)
A random list might look like this: A class at Featherstone, a ride on the Flying Horses Carousel, a membership to the Y. Child care from Martha’s Vineyard Community Services; Hospice care for a family member; an Angel Flight. Little league, sailing lessons, museum passes. A scholarship, a free lunch, a rescue pet. The Ag Fair, First Friday, The Feast of the Holy Ghost. The Vineyard’s DriveIn, MVYRadio…and so on.
It’s truly amazing when you realize how much our Island nonprofits support us, entertain us and care for us. This year, many are operating with less funding while the need for their services grows. Now hop back to your list for a minute and pick one organization. Resolve to give back to it any way you can, whether it’s in time or services or dollars. Whatever you give will come back to you in spades.
We have made an effort to be comprehensive with this directory. If you would like to add a nonprofit to the directory or amend a listing, please email thevine@vineyardgazette.com.

2,000 EGGS
SCRAMBLED. Slough Farm in Katama donated 2,000 fresh eggs to food equity programs – including the free fridge at the West Tisbury library – in 2025. A case of bird flu knocked out their 350-bird flock of laying hens in January, so 2026 will be a year of restocking.
HEAVY LIFTING. The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School’s small but mighty cafeteria crew arrives before dawn every day to begin the prep for serving both breakfast and lunch (meals are free) to about 650 students and staff members each day.

15,000
MINDING THE GAP. When school is out of session, many Island kids would go without a nutritious lunch if it weren’t for Island Grown Initiative’s community lunch program, which makes more than 15,000 meals and meal kits annually to cover school breaks.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN. Meals on Wheels, a program of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, sends drivers every weekday morning out to deliver nutritious meals to 300 homebound Island seniors, the majority of whom count the food as their main meal of the day.
1,000 Islanders lost SNAP benefits in November of 2025.
2 free farmers’ markets were held at the Ag Hall last fall, with donations from Island farms.
100 turkeys were donated by Stop & Shop for Thanksgiving dinners.
8 locations hosted free community dinners this winter.

If you ask Mike Lynch what makes a good roofer, he’ll tell you it’s not just about shingles and nails, it’s about pride in your work. That pride runs deep in the Lynch family, passed down from his father and grandfather before him.
For more than fifty years, Mike and his team at Associate Roofing have helped Island homeowners protect what matters most. From cedar and slate to copper and metal, every project is done right the first time, with craftsmanship, care, and respect for the Island’s character.
Grateful for the community that’s supported him for decades, Mike recently donated a new roof to the Chilmark School, where his children and grandchildren have studied, and continues to support local Island charities. He’s not only an excellent roofer, he’s also an equally appreciated neighbor to have!
