Brief History of the Church The history of Onna’s church is closely bound to the history of the village. Around the holy place arises and develops a community that nourish itself with popular faith and traditions embedded through time and urban space. A preexisting temple was likely present in Onna’s territory between 800 AD and 1000 AD. As an evidence, stone elements have come to light during the reconstruction work following the 2009 earthquake. To refer to a proper church, however, we need to wait until 1204, when a seal from Pope Innocent III, taking census of the possessions within the diocese of Forcona (a Roman town - later archiepiscopal seat - whose ruins lies nearby Civita di Bagno), cited the church of Santa Maria di Unda. We don’t 5
exactly know the appearance of this building, but, due to the settlement of Cistercian Monks in the area between Fossa and Ocre in 1200-1300, we assume its aspect had to be close to that of Santa Maria ad Cryptas in Fossa: a single nave and many frescoes. Later on, for unknown reasons, the church of Santa Maria di Unda becomes San Pietro di Onde. The church of Onna suffered severe damages during the 1703 earthquake, although it remained standing. The bell tower (collapsed on 6 April 2009) was built in 1754. In 1825 an adjoining space was built to host the Congregation. The 2009 earthquake almost entirely destroyed the church, which has been restored under the supervision of the Archeological Superintendence, and thanks to funds provided by the Federal Republic of Germany. Nowadays, this holy place still houses those works of art and faith that are the common thread connecting the long history of Onna’s community, with its patron Saints: Saint Peter and Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr.

Our Lady of Graces XV century Madonna and child, called delle Grazie (of Graces). Late quarter of the XV century, 51 cm x 115 cm. Author from Abruzzo. Attributed to Carlo dell’Aquila. Carved, painted and gilded wood. Venerated by the inhabitants of Onna who celebrate its religious holiday in May: the first Sunday of the month in the past, the second one nowadays. The religious ceremonies taking place during such festivity are rooted in a long tradition and testify the strong bound between Abruzzo and Puglia due to seasonal livestock migration (transhumance).

Madonna of the Goldfinch XV century Fresco of the Madonna del Cardellino, referred to by the inhabitants of Onna as Madonna dal Velo Bianco (Madonna with the White Veil). Late XV century. Author from Abruzzo. Unknown (maybe from the school of Silvestro dell’Aquila). The arched-shaped picture was discovered in 1897 on the right wall of the church - a single nave at the time - during enlargement works. It represents the Virgin Mary sitting on a faldstool, holding Jesus in Her arms. The baby Jesus holds in his left hand a spool of thread whose extremity is tied to a goldfinch perched on the fingers of the Virgin Mary; the scene refers to the salvation of Soul. On the sides there are Saint Bartholomew (on the left) and Saint Amico (on the right). Both saints are painted with their traditional symbolism: a knife for the first one; a hatchet, a wolf, and a white (Cistercian) tunic with dark scapular for Saint Amico. On the background, a glimpse of dense vegetation made up of thin trees and red poppies appearing through bushes. The artwork was severely damaged by the 2009 earthquake and has been subject to a careful restoration which almost entirely reconstructed its medium-lower part by reusing the small fragments of the pictorial decoration recovered after the quake. 11
Fresco “Muttergottes mit Distelfink” XV. Jhd.

The Crucifixion XIV century The existence of the fresco was totally unknown to the inhabitants of Onna before 6 April 2009. La Crocifissione (The Crucifixion) revealed itself after the partial detachment of the counter-facade plaster caused by the earthquake, on the left side of the church, watching from the altar. The work is probably from the XIV century, author unknown, and had to be part of a complex of frescoes representing evangelical scenes and distributed on the whole facade (see fragments on the left) and, almost certainly, on the walls of the original single nave. The fresco shows Christ with angels collecting his blood, the Virgin Mary on the lower left side and, beside her, is supposedly present (but not visible) the apostle John.

Cross XIV century The Cross used during processions, nowadays displayed on the right side of the altar, was not on public display before the 2009 earthquake. The inhabitants of Onna carried it around the streets of town every year on the occasion of parish holiday and then put it back in a secure location. After the quake, the Cross was examined by art history experts and dated back to XIV century. It’s a processional cross probably manufactured in the area of Sulmona, a sample of excellent workmanship, therefore inspiring the Archeological Superintendence, after a careful restoration, to keep it in a transparent showcase beside the altar. Towards the audience, the Cross displays the crucified Christ on the center, Our Lady of Sorrows on the left, the apostle John on the right, the prophet Elias on the bottom and another sacred icon on top. On the back side of the Cross, the blessing Christ at the center is surrounded by the Evangelists with their symbols: John (on top with an eagle), Mark (on the right with a lion), Luke (on the left with an ox), Matthew (on the bottom with an angel). 17

Canvas of Saint Emidius XVIII century It is one of the most important artworks kept in the church, among those dated XVIII century. It’s a Saint Emidius (bishop of Ascoli between III and IV century AD), the Saint who protects from earthquakes. The author is Vincenzo Damini, an artist born in Venice about the end of the XVII century, mainly a painter of historically themed works. After a period spent in England and a brief passage through Venice, he came to L’Aquila, where his activity is documented until 1741.

Tabernacle The tabernacle we admire today was abandoned during the XIX century in a garret, to make room for a more modern tabernacle. After the 2009 earthquake, it has been recovered, restored and it’s returned to its former role. It is situated on the altar, showing itself in an overall view with the Madonna of the Goldfinch. In all likelihood, it dates back to XVIII century.

Stone below the altar probably X century The small carved column was found - during the church restoration works performed after the 2009 earthquake - into a wall in the area of the former baptismal font. It was probably part of a place of worship existing before 1000 AD. We can notice a branch of grapevine, a bunch of grapes and a bird. These symbols can be interpreted in different ways.

Organ The organ - located on a mezzanine in the counter-façade - is an instrument of excellent workmanship, greatly appreciated by organists of all Italy. It was attributed to Luigi Galasso, beginning of the XX century; the date 1904 showed up during the dismantling. The organ costed around 4,000 Italian Lire, quoting more than 30,000 Euro in today’s currency. Luigi and Giovanni Galasso from Naples were so highly regarded as organs-crafters that they also realized the organ for the Chapel of the Treasure of St. Januarius.

Parish register The origin of Onna’s parish register follows the Council of Trent. It takes start in 1661, when the parish priest of the time, Don Antonio Lattanzi, signed in the footnote the first birth, marriage and death registrations. Recovered and secured after the 2009 earthquake, it is nowadays stored in the Diocese’s archive. The archive stores also documents of the Congregation of Holy Mary of the Graces, formally established in 1826 and currently active.

The sun through the rose window, April 29th The facade of the church, like almost all Cistercian facades, aims towards West so that, at the end of April, each year, when the sun sets (around 19:00 to 20:00), sunlight shines through the rose window and, in a circular shape, hits the spot right where the altar is and where once was the tabernacle. This phenomenon was unknown to Onna’s people until 2009: actually, the rose was blinded by a false window on the back side.
27
