SISTER DORIS LAVINTHAL DIRECTOR OF VILLA WALSH ACADEMY
OCTOBER 5. 2022
October 5, 2025, marked the three-year anniversary of the passing of Sister Doris Lavinthal Our hearts remain heavy with her loss; however, her spirit truly lives on in our memories and in the legacy she left behind.

Small in stature, but mighty in presence, Sister Doris possessed a quiet confidence that elicited immense respect from all who came into contact with her She was a compassionate and intelligent individual who, grounded in her faith, was an unparalleled leader.
In her 71 years as a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini, Sister Doris ministered as a classroom teacher, principal, and director Missioned in the Archdioceses of Hartford, Newark, Ogdensburg, and Paterson, Sister Doris faithfully served the community in several leadership roles: Supervisor of Schools, Provincial Councilor and Community Treasurer for three terms, and local Superior in Watertown, New York, and Pequannock, New Jersey.
Sister Doris left an indelible mark on the Villa Walsh Academy community. Using her strong business acumen, she was instrumental in the construction of Regina Pacis, Freytag Hall, St Joseph Hall Infirmary, and the Sister Doris Lavinthal Athletic Center Her daily life embodied the teachings of St Lucy Filippini, but she was not only an educator and administrator, she was also a friend and mentor to students and their families, the faculty and staff, and the Religious Teachers Filippini community. Her calm demeanor, combined with her commitment to excellence, enabled her to set and achieve visionary goals rooted in Villa Walsh Academy's mission
We deeply miss Sister Doris, but we are blessed to have known such a kind soul Of the many gifts she bestowed upon our community, perhaps the most valuable was the gift of herself.

“Thank you, Sister Doris, for sharing your life with us. It has been a remarkable journey of faith, of trust, and of abundant joy! “

-Sister Patricia Pompa
There are stars up above, so far away we only see their light Long, long after the star itself is gone. And so it is with people that we loved… their memories keep shining ever brightly though their time with us is done. But the stars that light up the darkest night, these are the lights that guide us. As we live our days, these are the ways we remember.

TTess Feury lives by a simple mantra: make your own opportunities. From her first days at Villa Walsh Academy to her life today as a professional rugby player and pediatric nurse practitioner living in London, Tess has consistently transformed setbacks into stepping stones toward success.
Tess began her Villa Walsh Academy journey in the fall of 2010. Looking back, she recalls, “Villa was unique in the best way Some things were very traditional, some were very modern, and some things only made sense if you had been a student and gone through it yourself.” A dedicated student-athlete, Tess played a school sport every season while also competing in rugby year-round. In her freshman year, the VWA soccer team won the Morris County Championship, which remains one of her favorite sports memories even to this day. Yet, athletics were only one part of her Villa Walsh Academy experience
Academically, Tess balanced a demanding course load with her rigorous athletic schedule, supported by teachers who believed deeply in her potential Educators, including Mrs Cummo Sister Laura, and Sister Mary Beth worked closely with her, offering guidance, flexibility and encouragement Beyond the classroom they urged Tess to engage in community service and explore opportunities in healthcare - early experiences that ultimately shaped her professional calling
“Their understanding, flexibility, and belief in my ability to balance multiple commitme taught me how to stay organized, discipline and purpose-driven,” Tess shares. “Those are skills I continue to rely on today, and I have them to thank for it”

Some of Tess’s fondest memories of Villa Walsh Academy are rooted in its traditions and sense of community. She recalls Field Day, Spirit Week - especially tug-of-war and the senior volleyball game - and long-standing traditions such as Mother-Daughter and FatherDaughter events, Big Sister/Little Sister, and the Junior Ring ceremony “All of these events were rooted in spending intentional time with loved ones and friends,” she reflects “I didn’t realize it at the time, but they taught me how to be fully present with the people around me.”
Upon graduation, Tess was recruited to play Division I rugby at Penn State University and was accepted into its nursing program - an opportunity that initially seemed impossible to pursue simultaneously. She was told the demanding off-campus clinical requirements made it unfeasible to combine nursing with varsity athletics. Faced with choosing between two passions, Tess did what she had learned to do: she created her own opportunity.

She began writing letters and scheduling calls with the Dean of Students and the Head Athletic Director, advocating for herself and outlining the time management and organizational skills she developed during her years at Villa Walsh Academy. Her persistence paid off. Penn State agreed to allow her to complete clinical hours at a local hospital on the main campus and offered priority scheduling to accommodate both academics and athletics Tess became the first Penn State student-athlete to study nursing while competing in a Division I sport.
“I remembered those long days at Villa, balancing schoolwork, sports, and service, and learning early how to manage my time and hold myself accountable,” Tess says. “Those lessons stayed with me as life became even busier in college”

Tess’s rugby career continued its rapid ascent. In 2016, she earned her first cap with the USA Rugby Women’s National Team. The following year, during her senior year at Penn State, she trained all summer in hopes of earning a spot on the US Rugby World Cup roster When the final selections were announced, Tess’s name was missing. Despite the heartbreak, she chose to stay for the final two weeks of training camp to support her teammates
On the last day of camp, her coach delivered unexpected news: due to roster changes and Tess’s unwavering commitment, she would be joining Team USA at the World Cup in Ireland as the youngest member of the squad Tess and the team would place 4 losing to New Zealand. th
After graduating from Penn State, Tess began her nursing career as a registered nurse in the Pediatric Department at Morristown Medical Center, later transitioning to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. While working full-time - including during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic - her rugby career slowed With a new national team coach in place, invitations to tournaments stopped coming.

Once again, Tess refused to let the moment define her. She temporarily stepped away from nursing and moved to Denver, Colorado, to train with USA Rugby, despite it being three years since her last national team call-up She reached out directly to the coach, who made it clear she was not part of the squad. Still, Tess bet on herself.
Her determination paid off. In the fall of 2021, she was once again selected to represent the United States in international competition.
With her rugby career reignited, Tess also remained committed to her vocation in healthcare She applied to Seton Hall University’s Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program and, with adjusted scheduling, completed her master’s degree while competing abroad. Today, Tess is a qualified pediatric nurse practitioner
Over the course of her career, Tess has competed in three Rugby World Cups and played professionally in three countries. She currently lives and works in England as a pediatric nurse practitioner and plays professionally for the Leicester Tigers.

Tess’s life isn’t just about successes on the field and in the hospital. She loves to hike, see live music, connect with friends and family, and travel - visiting 30 countries in just 30 years
Reflecting on her journey, Tess credits Villa Walsh Academy as a foundational force in her life. “Villa Walsh shaped me in so many ways,” she says “Academically, it taught me discipline and time management Personally and spiritually, it instilled a strong sense of purpose, compassion, and service. Most importantly, Villa taught me to leave a place better than I found it and that’s something I carry into every area of my life”
Her advice to current Villa Walsh Academy students is simple yet powerful: trust the foundation you are being given.
“You don’t need to have your entire path mapped out - I certainly didn’t,” Tess shares “Dreams evolve. Opportunities will come that you never imagined. Be willing to work hard, stay open to new possibilities, and lean into challenging days. Villa equips you with the skills and values to succeed anywhere in the world Enjoy it all”

t Villa Walsh Academy, “once a Viking, always a Viking” is more than a saying; it’s a way of life
For some, the Villa journey doesn’t end at graduation; it comes full circle. Our alumnae carry the lessons, faith, and sisterhood they gained here into the world and, in a very special way, some are called back home.
This feature celebrates four remarkable faculty members whose stories are rooted in Villa Walsh Academy. As students, they walked these halls, learned in these classrooms, and were shaped by the women who taught and inspired them. Today, they return not as students, but as educators, mentors, and role models for the next generation of Villa Walsh Academy girls.
Their paths may be unique, but they share a common thread: a deep love for Villa Walsh Academy and a commitment to giving back to the place that shaped them. Their stories are a testament to the enduring bonds of our Villa Walsh Academy community as a forever family.

Senior Theology Teacher
ked to write about VWA reminds me of the early days was a student (Class of ’70), as well as of more recent days ology teacher for the seniors. Back then, our days began entire school participating in choir under the expert of our principal, Sister Elizabeth Parente, a master and composer We were a mighty few, never imagining essful growth that would occur in the years to come
or class today outnumbers the entire enrollment of 1967! e incredible opportunities for our young women today, chnology that only appeared in past sci-fi TV shows like and Mission Impossible From green woolen blazers to weaters, we, who were once limited to classes only in Hall, now enjoy a campus of sports fields and classrooms ut into Regina Pacis and Ninetta Hall.
ess, our strong Christian identity and values never change e continued to enrich generations, enabling our young o be amazing role models, impacting people and locales wide. As I encounter our graduates in sometimes the most ted places, I am always impressed by what they are shing on behalf of others, whether in their families, es the Church, or societies around the globe. Our Media Center, dedicated to our beloved former principal, St Patricia Pompa, opened in 2023 and has quickly become a favorite gathering place on campus. Whether studying, collaborating with classmates, or enjoying a quiet moment between classes, our students feel right at home in this beautifully updated space Staffed by our librarian and communications guru, Stacey Grabowski, the Media Center is a true haven for our dedicated, hard-working girls.

On June 1, 2025, Villa Walsh Academy proudly celebrated the remarkable accomplishments of the Class of 2025.
Each graduate leaves Villa Walsh as a confident young woman whose unique gifts and contributions enrich our community in lasting, meaningful ways
The faculty, staff, and administration are deeply grateful to have accompanied these students on their journeys and take great pride in all they have achieved.
May God bless each member of the Class of 2025 and guide her in the years to come

One of Villa Walsh Academy’s most cherished traditions was beautifully celebrated on October 20 in St. Lucy Chapel. The Junior Ring Ceremony honors the deep spirit of sisterhood, faith, and connection that unites Villa Walsh Academy girls across generations.
As each student received her class ring, she joined the proud legacy of young women who have worn this symbol of unity, friendship, and Villa Walsh pride with grace and devotion. One by one, members of the junior class entered the sanctuary to receive their rings, each calling forward the next classmate and sharing an embrace - a powerful expression of an enduring sisterhood.
Following Mass, the girls and their families continued the celebration together in Mother Ninetta Auditorium, marking a joyful and meaningful milestone in their Villa Walsh Academy journey

This year’s Fall Festival & Student Fashion Show - Villa’s Voyage: Celebrating Journeys Near & Far - marked the most successful event in Villa Walsh Academy’s history Held at the Hanover Marriott on November 22, the evening brought together the entire Villa Walsh Academy community to honor the school’s rich history, celebrate the legacies of generations of alumnae, and showcase the creativity, confidence, and promise of today’s students.
The night featured the always-impressive Student-Made Fashion Mannequin Contest, the world-famous Gift Auction, the spirited Silent Auction, and opportunities to participate in the 50/50 and Grand Raffle The evening culminated in a high-energy fashion show featuring students from every grade, which concluded with a special presentation by the Class of 2026. Our seniors took to the runway in elegant gowns, each accompanied proudly by her father - a moment that drew enthusiastic applause and heartfelt emotion from the audience.

The evening was a beautiful reminder of the Villa Walsh Academy community's strength and spirit From the laughter shared among friends to the pride felt watching our students shine, Villa’s Voyage truly celebrated all that makes Villa Walsh exceptional. Most importantly, the funds raised directly support the school’s continued growth - enhancing academic programs, expanding opportunities for our girls, and enabling the campus improvements that keep Villa Walsh Academy vibrant for current and future generations.

One of the highlights of the evening was the Alumnae Lounge, a warm and welcoming space featuring refreshments, conversation, and abundant camaraderie. Alumnae from classes spanning the early 1990s through the 2000s, as well as alumnae parents, gathered to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate the formative four years they spent at Villa Walsh Academy Alumnae were invited to enjoy the evening’s pre-dinner festivities free of charge, and many also purchased dinner tickets to attend the evening’s show. The lounge was a true representation of the voyages celebrated that evening.

On Sunday afternoon, the Villa Walsh Academy Chorus came together for its rescheduled Christmas Concert, a beautiful and fitting close to the Christmas season Under the direction of Mr Paul Daher, the chorus presented music inspired by this year’s theme, Candle of Hope, reminding us that the joy and promise of Christmas extend far beyond December.
Performed to a full audience, the concert featured our talented student singers alongside an instrumental ensemble, including alumnae Kathleen (McAuliffe) Donahue ‘06, and a special cello performance by Mr Busler of the mathematics and computer science faculty
A highlight of the evening was the grand finale, when alumnae returned to the stage to sing with the chorus, accompanied by Sr Patricia on piano - an enduring tradition that unites generations of Villa Walsh Academy women through music and faith.

Each fall, Villa Walsh Academy comes alive with renewed energy as the campus welcomes both familiar faces and those just beginning their Villa Walsh journey Amid this vibrant return, our admissions team is hard at work shaping the next generation of bright, bold young women who join our sisterhood.
This season, the team - often accompanied by our everenthusiastic Student Ambassadors - visited more than a dozen local schools to share what it truly means to become part of the VWA family Back on campus, our two fall Open Houses were filled to capacity, offering prospective students and their families the opportunity to tour our facilities, meet faculty, coaches, and HSA parents, and experience the warmth of our community

Following the entrance exam, aspiring Villa Vikings engaged in interviews with Sr Elaine and Mrs Manley and enjoyed shadow days alongside our seventh graders and freshmen, gaining an authentic glimpse of life at Villa Walsh Academy Personalized notes have now been sent to each accepted student, along with an admissions packet and an invitation to our Accepted Student Night on Wednesday, February 4

Villa Walsh Academy is proud to celebrate an extraordinary achievement in its AP Capstone program Thanks to the dedication, curiosity, and perseverance of our students and the expert guidance of Mrs. Julie Oliveros (AP Seminar) and Mrs Kristina Pasko (AP Research), every student who completed the inaugural two-year AP Capstone cycle (2023–2025) successfully earned either the AP Seminar and Research Certificate or the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma
This accomplishment represents far more than successful exam scores The AP Capstone program challenges students to think critically, conduct college-level research, and engage meaningfully with complex issues. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar, AP Research, and on four additional AP exams receive the AP Capstone Diploma™, while those who score 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™
Meanwhile, our 2024–2026 AP Research students have already immersed themselves in their chosen fields of study On September 26, the group traveled to the Alexander Library at Rutgers University, where Dr Thomas Glynn generously shared his time and expertise Students learned advanced strategies for navigating academic databases and locating peer-reviewed studies relevant to their individualized research topics - skills that will serve them well throughouttheiracademiccareers
Beyond their work in the classroom and library, our AP researchers are learning how to collaborate with the broader academic community Through professional outreach, they have connected with scholars at institutions including Virginia Tech, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, and the University of Barcelona These experts have generously shared data sets, survey instruments, and guidance, demonstrating that academicinquiryistrulyaglobalconversation
As our students are discovering, bold questions often open remarkable doors. They are living out the wisdom of Steve Jobs, who once reflected on the value of simply reaching out: “Most people never pick up the phone, most people never ask. And that’s what separates the people who do things from the people who just dream about them.” At VillaWalshAcademy, ourAPCapstoneresearchersarechoosingtobetheoneswhodo

Villa Walsh Academy’s Sisters 1st FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 8513 has become a defining and dynamic part of campus life since its founding in November 2020 by math teacher Lee Anne Nugent and co-coach Carol Forte FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a world-class, team-based global robotics community that prepares students for the future through hands-on STEM programs. Competing at the FRC levelthe highest level of FIRST competition - Villa Walsh’s Sisters 1st team designs, builds, and programs industrial-sized robots weighing up to 125 pounds to compete in high-energy, arena-style challenges alongside teams from around the world
Sisters 1st is proudly the only all-female FRC team in New Jersey The team’s journey began humbly, working out of a hallway and kitchen in Mother Ninetta Hall, and has since grown into a nationally recognized program With the addition of teacher Owen Busler in 2022, the team’s technical expertise and competitive success accelerated. An alumnus of FRC Team 303, Mr Busler joined as a Technical Mentor and later became an assistant coach Since beginning official competition in 2022, Sisters 1st has quickly built an impressive record. In 2022, the team earned the FIRST Mid-Atlantic All-Star Award and has competed at the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas, for the past two years Today, the team ranks in the top 7% of FRC teams worldwide and is the second-highest-ranked all-female team
Now in its fifth season, which kicked off on January 10, Sisters 1st continues to grow in both size and impact Approximately 25% of the Villa Walsh student body participates on the team, contributing through five technical subteams - including design, programming, electrical, strategy, and fabrication - and four business subteams focused on program management, fundraising, and community outreach
Sustaining a program of this caliber requires significant support, and Sisters 1st actively fundraises while building strong partnerships within the community The team is currently supported by nine corporate sponsors, including Johnson & Johnson, R Seelaus, and Comcast To further support their mission, Sisters 1st will host a Trivia Night Fundraiser for parents, alumnae, and friends of Villa Walsh Academy on February 20 in Mother Ninetta Hall We hope you will join us to celebrate and support these remarkable young women as they continue to lead, innovate, and inspire

In continued support of Villa Walsh Academy’s commitment to innovation and scientific excellence, the school introduced a new Fundamentals of Engineering Honors course this year Drawing upon Villa’s robotics resources and laboratory facilities, the course is taught by Owen Busler, teacher and assistant robotics coach
The year began with units in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, providing students with a strong foundation in core engineering principles As the course progresses into the new year, students will explore Electrical Engineering and Software Engineering, culminating in a comprehensive final project that requires multidisciplinary integration and real-world problem solving
In addition to Fundamentals of Engineering Honors, Mr Busler teaches two different AP Computer Science courses The two sections of AP Computer Science Principles, with 24 students enrolled, introduce learners to the broad field of computer science, emphasizing problemsolving, creativity, and the societal impact of technology, not just coding. He also teaches AP Computer Science A, which focuses on objectoriented programming in Java. This rigorous course develops students’ problem-solving, data structure, and core programming skills through hands-on coding and a comprehensive end-ofyear exam.
This December, Villa Walsh students across all grade levels participated in an Hour of Code, engaging the entire school community in computer science. The initiative included an AI and machine learning demonstration and a presentation on the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence. Through these programs, Villa Walsh Academy continues to inspire young women to lead with curiosity, confidence, and purpose in an ever-evolving scientific world.

On September 20, the Villa Walsh Academy community gathered on a perfect autumn day for our annual Septemberfest, celebrating VWA athletics and strengthening our cherished Villa sisterhood Students, alumnae, parents, and fans enjoyed a full day of competition and connection across campus

Festivities began with the annual Middle School Munchkin Invitational, followed by a community-wide 5K run/walk led by our cross country team. Both junior varsity and varsity tennis and soccer teams showcased their talents on the courts and fields, and all three levels of volleyball opened the day with early matches at the Sr. Doris Lavinthal Athletic Center and Mother Ninetta Gym, hosting the annual Septemberfest Invitational
The excitement continued with the competitive varsity volleyball matches filling the gym with enthusiastic cheers and school spirit

It was a wonderful celebration of athletics, community, and tradition - bringing together current families and alumnae in true Villa spirit once again!

for a cure!
In addition to the fierce battles and victories on
the fields, courts, and courses, Villa Walsh
Academyʼs fall athletic teams shone with purpose
and service. Throughout October, our volleyball,
cross country, and soccer teams led meaningful
fundraising and awareness-raising efforts for
breast cancer research. Showcasing our teamsʼ
commitments to the community inspires genuine
respect and admiration from all who see their efforts.
The VWA Cross Country team sponsored a tag
day and ice cream sale, rallying the school
community to support the cause. Our soccer
team hosted a spirited “Kicking Cancer One Goal
at a Timeˮ game on October 14, featuring custom
pink VWA soccer T-shirts.
On October 27, volleyball closed the month with
the tenth annual Dig Pink game, a beloved
tradition at Villa Walsh Academy. The school day
kicked off with a surprise Rock-Paper-Scissors bead tournament, while the afternoon brought a
pink-themed spirit competition, a bake sale,
merch tables, and a big divisional win over
Pequannock in two sets!
Together, our fall teams raised over $3,000 - a
testament to the compassion, leadership, and
heart of our student-athletes. These efforts foster
a sense of community pride and show how our schoolʼs athletic programs serve a greater
purpose.

Our Varsity Soccer team delivered a solid season, finishing 12–6–1 and reflecting consistent performance against top teams in New Jersey, highlighting their competitive strength and dedication. The offense produced 48 goals, and the defense allowed only 16 - a testament to their balance and determination. Villa Walsh Academy’s seven seniors anchored the team with leadership and composure, helping secure victories in seven of the final ten matches The combination of 8 varsity underclassmen makes for an exciting future for VWAGS!
P O R T S

The VWA Tennis team had a competitive season, finishing 6–7 against strong opponents in the Liberty Division of the NJAC, beating divisional rivals Madison and St. Elizabeth both times they met during the season. Guided by six exceptional seniors, the team earned two decisive shutout wins over Morris Catholic and Vernon Township High School. The high-level competition in the regular season helped the first doubles team advance in the Morris County Tournament, which Villa Walsh Academy is proud to co-host on our premier courts with neighboring Delbarton School.
The VWA Cross Country team delivered a remarkable season despite graduating state-recognized runners in 2025. With a 5–1 record in the NJAC Liberty Division, the team opened its championship run on October 14 by winning the NJAC “Small Schools” Championship, finishing first out of 15 teams. This victory marked the program’s fifth consecutive and tenth overall NJAC title in just 15 years. Standout runner Blythe Dudley ’26 claimed her third individual NJAC championship. The team’s momentum continued at the Morris County Championships on October 21, where they placed fourth overall, and Blythe earned her second individual county title with a time of 18:33.23. On October 29, the team traveled to Blair Academy for the NJISAA Prep B Championship, where three runners - Blythe Dudley ’26, Catherine Azares ’29, and Amelia Kleinle’26 - finished in the top ten, securing VWA’s third consecutive Prep B title The team concluded its extraordinary season by winning the NJSIAA Non-Public B State Championship

Villa Walsh Academy continues its rise as a volleyball program, capturing the Independence Division title of the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference and fielding strong varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams The varsity squad - led by seven senior standouts - enjoyed a spirited and competitive season marked by powerful serving, dominant net play, and infectious team chemistry With key wins over conference rivals, Villa Walsh Volleyball went 8-2 in the division, clinching the title with an exciting victory over Morris Catholic in late October. The team advanced in the Non-Public B State Tournament with a 3–1 victory over Hawthorne Christian, forcing a fourth set under the newly adopted NJSIAA best-of-five format They then battled through a thrilling second-round match against St Benedict’s, narrowly falling 2–3 after pushing it all the way to five sets

"HER JOURNEY BEGAN AT VILLA WALSH, BUT HER LEGACY NOW REACHES CHILDREN ACROSS THE WORLD."
Melanie Karen Allerot ’93 holds a cherished place in the story of Villa Walsh Academy and in the hearts of all who knew her.
Raised in Morristown, New Jersey, Melanie’s faith-filled foundation began at St. Margaret of Scotland School and continued at Villa, where she formed lifelong friendships and developed a deep connection to the Religious Teachers Filippini and the mission of St Lucy Filippini
As a child, Melanie faced extraordinary medical challenges after being diagnosed with advanced Ewing’s sarcoma. Through years of treatment, steadfast faith, and remarkable resilience, she became one of the first children to survive the disease, a journey many lovingly describe as a St Lucy miracle That experience shaped the compassionate and purpose-driven life she would go o

Guided by empathy and understanding born from her own story, M supporting children and families as a Certified Child Life Specialist She brought comfort, calm, and even moments of joy into hospital rooms during life’s most difficult seasons When health challenges led her into early retirement, Melanie embraced a new chapter filled with creativity, art, design, and meaningful time with family and friends.
Melanie’s deep faith remained at the center of her life, and her legacy now reaches across the world In a beautiful tribute to her spirit, Sister Marybeth Lloyd and the Religious Teachers Filippini have named a new kindergarten building at St Lucy School on the Bishop’s Compound in Adigrat, Ethiopia, in her honor.
Melanie’s Place, currently under construction, will be a vibrant space where young children can learn, play, grow, and begin their educational journeys It is a living reflection of Melanie’s nurturing heart and her lifelong devotion to the mission of education and care Through the laughter of children and the gift of learning, her light will continue to shine for generations to come
