NOTES
Welcome to Villa Walsh Academy’s production of Annie.
The character of Little Orphan Annie was introduced in a 1924 comic strip by Harold Gray and published in New York Daily News. Running for many decades under Gray’s artistic view, Little Orphan Annie was a celebrated regular showcasing a resilient and optimistic young girl that faced many trials and hardships. In the next decade, during The Great Depression, Annie's resilient character became a hopeful example to others that were greatly suffering. Her positive attitude was encouragement to the readers on how to persevere through what seemed like impossible circumstances. Annie the musical by Strouse, Charnin, and Meehan first debuted on Broadway in April of 1977. The musical won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical; it became a huge success and kept its run for 2,377 performances. The movie adaptation in 1982 brought the story to mainstream America and had many young children singing Broadway tunes by heart.
I grew up during the height of Annie’s popularity. In fact the song “Tomorrow” was always the closing of my dance school performances. Each performer onstage would sing it with gusto, possibly imagining themselves as the star of the show, or much like the main character, as someone brave enough to save any situation. It seemed to us that Annie could do anything just by staying positive. Perhaps it is that resilience that was so appealing. Through this show of extremes: the poverty of the Hooverville shantytowns versus the excess of the Warbucks mansion; the cynicism of adults versus the relentless optimism of a child; the greed of the Hannigans verses the generosity of those who truly loved Annie, we see someone survive it all with each set back.
Mr. Daher, Mr. Wohlgemuth and myself are so proud of all of the performers in this production. They are brave enough to not only put themselves in front of an audience - but to do it with a love for telling stories and sharing what could be. We hope that one day they look back upon this experience and always carry forward an optimistic view.
Enjoy the show!
