On Monday, October 17, 2022, the Guidance Department sponsored a College Night, for all interested9-12thgradestudentsandparentstolearn more about the college application process. OnOctober12th,studentsingrades11and12were offered the opportunity to take SAT School Day Testing.CollegeBoardhasindicatedthatthesescores should be available by November 3rd. Students shouldbe abletoaccesstheir scoresviatheir College Board account.

On October 18th, students in grades 11 and 12 were offered the opportunity to take ACT School Day Testing. ACT has indicated that scores will be availableintwotoeightweeksfollowingthetest.Students who have created their MyACT account should be able to access their scores digitally earlier than the papercopysenttotheschool.

On Wednesday, October 19th, the Villa’s Freshman Class of 2026 traveled to e Church of St. James in Basking Ridge to participate in their day-long retreat. is retreat was an opportunity for the students to “withdraw”fromtheir usualschedule, toengagein

prayerandre ection,andtoconnectmoredeeplywith their peers. With this in mind, the girls began their day in Eucharistic Adoration, also receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation if they desired. e students attentively listened to a talk from Sr. Luciana D’Cruze, M.P.F., a temporary professed Filippini sister, about her vocation and her relationship with God thus far. In addition, the students played ice breaker games and engaged in small group sessions to build community and to share their re ections on adjusting to high school.e dayconcluded withHoly Mass,anda joyful bus ride back to Villa! On October 19, 2022, Villa Serves enjoyed a visit from Teresa Prendergast and one of our own graduates, Suzanne (Luecke) Toscano ’86. ey were both here as representatives of Mary’s Hands at St. Margaret’s Church in Morristown and came to speak to the girls about the work theydo,the people they help, and how Villa can contribute. Aer background stories and some of the issues facing immigrant populations, the conversation turned to babies, Christmas, and the ways that Villa Serves can assist in the work of Mary’s Hands.

Students from Villa Walsh’s Class of 2024 received their class rings in a special liturgy celebrated in St. Lucy Chapelon Tuesday, October 25. is longstanding Villa Walsh Academy tradition honors the friendship, bond, and sisterhood that has grown for these young women, who are now halfway through their high school careers. To celebrate with each other and with their parents present in the sanctuary was a great blessing, as the students received their rings and their pinkroses,tosignifygratitude,admiration,andappreciation. Kudos to the senior daughters for their moving presentation in tribute to their moms. And we applaud the moms of the Class of 2023 for the talented quiz show and presentation in honor of their senior daughters. Look for Villa Walsh’s annual All Souls Remembrance outsideoftheBusinessOfficeinBrowneHallthroughout the month of November. Students, faculty and parents are invited to write the names of deceased loved ones or family members and place them on the Wreath of Remembrance, which reminds us to pray for our loved ones who have gone on before us, but who are never far from our hearts. As October comes to an end, so does the regular season for VWAGS. e team continued to battle all month long against some of the toughest teams in Morris County. e team faced a tough opponent – Roxbury – in the rst roundoftheMorrisCountyTournament.Playingone of their best halves of the season, the team held them scoreless through halime. Roxbury ultimately ended upwinningthegame3-0,buttheteampulledtogether andbattledtotheveryend,provingtothemselvesand fansthattheyarecapableofhigh-levelplayagainstvery tough opponents. is mindset would prove valuable, especially come the last regular season game against a tough Whippany Park team. e team, already shorthandedduetoseveralinjuriesincurredduringthepast few games, went down 0-1 in the rst half. However, the team knew the game was only half over, and they hadtimetoturnthegamearound.Pressuringfromthe kick-off, the attack earned a corner kick. Mary Bowers’23sentabeautifulballintothebox,which Colleen Walsh’24 headeddirectly intothe goal to tie the game at 1-1. e team continued to battle through double overtime periods. e mid eld line of Clodagh Bateson’26, Margaret Boler’25, Colleen Walsh’24, Grace Mesce’24, and Kayley Bascom’26 kept running at the WhippanyParkdefense.Intheend,VWAGSranoutof time,andthegameendedasa1-1tie.

Despite many injuries, VWAGS remained strong and dedicated to each other and the season. As October turns to November, the team is looking to make a strongrun in the NJSIAA state tournament.On Saturday,October29th, VWAGS#9seedupsetthe#8Hawthorne Christian in the rst round, shutting them out 4-0.

JVVWAGSwrappedupourseasonwithour nalgame at Whippany Park. Although the season was challenging, the athletes proved to be a strong group of young womenwhorefusedtogiveup!eyallshowedgrowth throughout the season. e obstacles they faced never diminishedtheir ame,butonlyfueledthe retopush themselves even harder. We are all extremely proud of how far these athletes have come and look forward to the2023season.

October-Madnesswouldbeagooddescriptionofwhat life has been like for the Villa Volleyball Varsity team for the last few weeks. In the Prep Tournament, the team won against Morristown Beard in the rst round andwasdefeatedbyatallandstrongNewarkAcademy squad in the second round. On October 8 the “minions,” aka the Villa volleyball team, earned a bucket of candy forwinning the costumecontestattheJefferson Spooktacular Halloween tournament. e highlight of October was the senior day match versus Morristown Beard. Aer losing the rst set and being down 17-21 in the second set, the players used their homecourt advantage - a gym full of Western-themed Villa Volleyball Fans - to turn the match around and winset#2andset#3.Aerthematch,the underclassmen celebrated the seniors on the team with an emotional and heartfelt presentation of speeches and gis. e JV Volleyball team has moved into the end of the season with determination and high spirits. ey defeated AOSE for the second time this season during our Dig Pink event on Tuesday, Oct 25th. is fundraisersupportsefforts forbreastcancerresearch.

e VWA freshman volleyball team has continued its winning ways by improving its record to 13- 1. ey also participated in the Madison Freshman Tournament on October 15 and nished in third place. eir nal game is on October 26th against Jefferson. Each player has continued to improve their skill level throughouttheseason.

ere’s something about the annual Morris County TennisTournamentthatbringsoutthebestinourVilla Walsh Varsity Tennis Team, and 2022 did not disappoint. Almost every position knocked out their rstround opponent and gave the very best teams in the county a run for their money. Despite long odds and a series of injuries, the tennis team still shined when it mattered the most. Villa’s rst singles player, Katrina Eagan’24, embraced her new role at rst singles with a determination and ferocity that will be remembered for years to come. At second singles, Sarah Chambeau’24 worked hardto stay in every match and made positivestridesallseasonlong.KellyO’Reilly’23hada tremendoussecond-halfcomebackwinning veofher last six matches with steady nerves and an aggressive net game. Villa’s rst doubles duo of Avery Walsh’23 andfreshmansensationAngelinaSantorelli’26ledthe team,rackingupaseason-highninewinstogether.

At second doubles, Malia Nugent’25 and Cameron Shull’26 banged out eight wins together, even though they didn’t join forces until the h match of the season. eir re and prowess at the net le their opponents shaking their heads. Cameron Shull’26 nished the season with a team-best winning percentagescoring8winsinjust11matches. OlivaChang’25 and Kaitlyn Pavagadhi’25 stepped up when the team needed them the most, scoring a pair of wins for the varsity squad. Tatiana Bedelian’23, Alison Wilbur’23, and Lauren Dion’23, played with heart and helped the Villa Walsh Tennis team secure another terri cseason.

We wrapped up the season by having a fun parent/ daughtertournamentonOctober 21stwiththeVarsity team and JV and Varsity parents, followed by a team dinner and awards ceremony in Grace Ann Cafe. It was great to see the girls playing doubles with their mom or dad on the court, and everyone had a great time! Somenewrivalrieswerealsostarted,andweare alreadylooking forwardtothe rematchesnextyear!

Post-season awards earned by the JV team included a CoachesAward,giventoSusannaBuonaiuto’23,Most ValuablePlayerAwards,giventoour rstdoublesteam of Lynette Gao’25 and Olivia Parrillo’26, and Most Improved Award, given to Alexandra Rezza’25. We wish the girls the best of luck in the winter and spring sports seasonsand therestofthe schoolyear.

e Villa Cross Country team has continued its phenomenal record of success throughout the month of October.emonthstartedwithanimpressivevictory at the prestigious Shore Coaches Meet, with the varsityrunnerstakinghome rstplaceandbeingawarded New Balance backpacks as a result of their efforts. e girls then completed their NJAC batch meet season with a perfect record of 5-0 by defeating a powerful Parsippany Hills team. Just over a week later, they returned to NJAC competition by taking the team title at the Conference Championships with Blythe Dudley’26 and Erin Aroneo’23 taking individual titles in thevarsityandJV racesrespectively.

eteamcontinuedtheirmarchtovictorybywinning, in HISTORIC fashion, the Morris County Championship for the rst time in Villa history. e Middle School Cross Country Team had a solid season with many new faces and everyone improving throughout the month of October. Knowing that there would be 3 races at the Central Park course in Morris Plains, the team enjoyed an outing there to familiarize themselves with the course and went on to Scoop Station for a team bonding experience. Eighth graders Azariah Andrews’27, Olivia Barsemian’27, Alexa Barravecchio’27, Isabella Orosz’27, Isabella PropperStuehr’27,PeytonSimmons’27,andMaeson Honan’27guidedtheteamthroughoutpracticeswhich includedsomeYogainstruction,manyintensestrength and conditioning workouts along with several campus and course runs. e accumulation of this training helped the seventh graders, Galina Dangler’28, Samantha Innella’28, Layla Vreeling’28, and Mary Cafasso’28,performwell in all of theirmeets throughout theseason.eteam nishedin4thplaceattheCounty Championships for the Group 1 Division.
