“The End of Oak Street” is a creature feature about a seemingly-idyllic suburban family going through some hard times. Greg (Ewan McGregor) and Denise (Anne Hathaway) Platt raise their teenage children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery) on Oak Street in the sickeningly sweet suburb of Flowervale, MI in 1982. The parents’ marriage is hanging by a thread and the kids hate being caught in the middle. But all that family drama is about to be interrupted by a most outlandish danger. Bright lights flash in the middle of the night. Pets go missing. Giant piles of dung appear in neighbors’ backyards...

HEMET — Firefighters reached 95% containment of the 77-acre Taffle Fire southeast of Hemet by Monday, Aug. 17. The wildfire was first reported Aug. 14 near Taffle Ranch Road and Louis Lane, approximately 5 miles southeast of Hemet. The fire initially grew to 55 acres with 5% containment before increasing to 77 acres. By Aug. 15, firefighters had reached 50% containment. Containment increased to 75% later that day and to 85% by Aug. 16. All evacuation orders and warnings associated with the fire have been lifted. During the height of the incident, evacuation orders were issued for Riverside County. Those orders were later reduced to warnings before being lifted. Fifty ro 200 personnel were assigned to the fire during the

A man is taken into custody after a chase and standoff in Hemet. Valley News/Robert Carter photo Julie Reeder-Robert Carter HEMET — A man was taken into custody Saturday afternoon, Aug 15, after a standoff with Hemet police outside the Mother’s Nutritional Center at 199 N. State St. The incident began at approximately 3:30 p.m. after officers located the man sitting inside a parked vehicle. Earlier in the day, the driver allegedly led officers on a brief pursuit near Stetson Avenue and State Street, but police

terminated the pursuit. Officers later found the vehicle on North State Street. Police were advised that the man, who reportedly has a history of contact with the department and a mental health condition, had a knife inside the vehicle. Employees were evacuated through the rear of the business as officers established a perimeter. American Medical Response personnel and Hemet firefighters staged outside the perimeter while police attempted to persuade the man to leave the

vehicle. The driver initially refused officers’ commands to get out. Officers eventually approached the vehicle and took him into custody without further reported incident. The man was transported to a hospital for evaluation. He was later placed in a holding cell pending transportation to the Riverside County jail. His identity and information about any potential criminal charges were not immediately available.

Carlson is a member of the Machine Knitters Guild of San Diego and participated in demonstrations at the county fair June 11 and June 12. The members and fairgoers who participated knitted approximately 160 beanies for the project. “We teach the public about what our machines are capable of doing,” Carlson said. “This year we did it with a focus on making the beanies.” see CARLSON, page A-6

Soboba Tribal members who recently graduated from high school are honored at Soboba’s student awards ceremony. Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians At the end of each school year, the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians takes time to recognize young Tribal members who have excelled in their educational endeavors. Tribal Council hosted the 2025-2026 Academic Achievement Awards ceremony at the Soboba Casino Resort Event Center on July 26. Ninety-six students were celebrated at a luncheon buffet that began with a video presentation featuring all students honored. The final slide had the message: “Congratulations! It is because of you that we are a proud nation!” Soboba Chairman Isaiah Vivanco then welcomed everyone to the event. “We really want to recognize our Elders, parents, aunties and uncles and everybody out there supporting our youth through this journey and their educational goals,” he said. “I think it’s really important that you stand by their side and make sure they get the opportunities they need.” Bird singers and dancers performed many social songs while guests made their way to the buffet, which featured a variety of Mexican food, an omelet bar, and a pasta station. After that, each student was invited on stage by Tribal Executive Officer Steven Estrada, who served as emcee for the event and provided the blessing. Students in grades 6-12 were divided into categories based on their overall GPA with each receiving a certificate, olla and check. Each was congratulated by Tribal Council Chairman Isaiah Vivanco, Vice Chairwoman Geneva Mojado, Secretary Monica Herrera, Treasurer Adona Salgado, and Sergeant-at-Arms Daniel Valdez. The following Silver Award recipients demonstrated Outstanding Achievement by earning a GPA of 3.0-3.4 during the 20252026 school year. I always encourage them to do their absolute best and never give up; mostly to do better than me, top all of my accomplishments because the only thing that can really stop them is themselves.” She said it was nice to have everyone’s hard work be acknowledged with this type of ceremony. “It made the kids feel important,” Valenzuella said. City of Temecula releases performance bond, accepts warranty bonds for Ronald Reagan Sports Park rink Joe Naiman for the Valley News The improvements to the Ronald Reagan Sports Park ice rink have been completed, and the Temecula City Council approved the release of performance bonds while accepting maintenance and warranty bonds for the rink. A 4-0 vote on August 11, with Matt Rahn absent, approved the actions associated with the completion of the rink in the 30800 block of Rancho Vista Road. The city council accepted the construction of the rink as complete and directed the city clerk to file and record the Notice of Completion. The action also approved the release of the performance bond and accepted one-year maintenance and warranty bonds. In July 2024, the city council awarded a design-build contract for the design and construction of the rink improvements to De La Secura Builders, Inc. The contract award was for $2,957,062, and the city council also authorized the city manager to approve contract change orders cumulatively of up to $295,706.20, creating a total authorized expenditure

amount of $3,252,768.20. The project included upgrades to the existing facility, including installation of sports tiling on the playing surface and replacement of the dasher boards, kick plates, and safety glass around the rink. The work also constructed a new roof structure over the existing rink featuring new lighting, a scoreboard, and a fan ventilation system. Improvements to the bleachers and pedestrian pathway from the parking lot to the facility and landscape allowed for better disabled access. Eight change orders were issued. Those changes increased the contract by $292,073.39 to create a final contract amount of $3,249,135.39. The improvements other than the roofing and panels were completed in early January, and the patrons were able to use the upgraded rink on January 20. The roof structure and panels were ready for city and patron use on June 6. The warranty for the improvements other than the roof structure and panels is for a one-year period from January 20, 2026, to January 20, 2027. The one-year

Temecula City Council approves time EMWD awards design extension for Fourth Street hotel contract for SJVRWF aeration blower Joe Naiman for the Valley News

The Temecula City Council approved a time extension for public improvements associated with a planned four-story hotel on Fourth Street. The city council voted 4-0 August 11, with Matt Rahn absent, to approve the time extension. The public improvements must now be completed by April 18, 2028. The time extension covers roads, water

and sewer facilities, and other infrastructure; the hotel or other lot improvements themselves are not required to be completed by that date. The hotel’s four stories do not include underground parking. The city’s Planning Commission approved a development plan application for the hotel in the 41900 block of Fourth Street on April 18, 2018. In October 2021 a modification altering the layout, relocating the garage entrance to the back

of the building, and revising the elevation was approved administratively. A September 2023 administrative approval revised the courtyard elevation and added windows in the fitness center area. The Temecula Municipal Code allows five one-year time extensions to be granted administratively. Any additional time extensions must be approved by the city council at a public hearing.

Wildomar City Council approves tribal agreements for Bundy Canyon Road realignment Joe Naiman for the Valley News

The City of Wildomar will realign a segment of Bundy Canyon Road, and the August 12 Wildomar City Council meeting included approval of tribal agreements to provide cultural resource monitoring during grading. A single 5-0 vote approved agreements with the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians. The agreements formalize with each tribe the procedures for the treatment of Native American

human remains, grave goods, funerary objects, ceremonial items, and cultural items in the event any are found in conjunction with the work. The Bundy Canyon Road Improvement Project will realign the road both vertically and horizontally between Oak Canyon Drive and just east of The Farm Road. Due to the large quantities of excavation and grading, an Environmental Impact Report rather than a Mitigated Negative Declaration was used to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act. The EIR was

approved in September 2014 and an addendum was approved in July 2020. The EIR mitigation measures include cultural monitoring during ground-disturbing activities. The agreements specify the scope of work, the duties and responsibilities of the city and of the tribes, the procedures for handling discovered artifacts and other cultural resources, the geographical area over which the tribal monitoring crew will oversee, statutory compliance, and compensation by the city for the tribal monitoring crews.

The Eastern Municipal Water District awarded a design contract for a new aeration blower at the San Jacinto Valley Regional Water Facility. The EMWD board’s 5-0 vote August 5 authorized the award of a $427,241 preliminary and final design contract with Carollo Engineers, Inc. The board action also authorized EMWD general manager Joe Mouawad or his designee to issue other contracts for consultants or supplies related to the design of the aeration blower and approved total appropriations of $539,000 which will also cover $72,700 for EMWD engineering branch labor, $25,000 for field exploration, $2,000 for permitting, $5,059 for the final preparation of plans and specifications, and $7,000 for bid and award phase labor, advertisement, and material expenses. The San Jacinto Regional Water Reclamation Facility in the 700 block of North Sanderson Avenue has a capacity of 14 million gallons per day. The treatment process includes the four existing aeration blowers, which promote the growth of microorganisms that break down organic matter. Although the facility currently only has four aeration blowers, the building was designed to accommodate a fifth blower when such expansion became necessary.

Recent process modeling has identified aeration air limitations due to continued regional growth and ongoing water conservation efforts which have resulted in higher-concentration influent, the replacement of obsolete panel aeration diffusers with tubular diffusers, and the anticipated commissioning of the Cawston Lift Station which is currently in the final design phase and is expected to be in service by 2028 and will reintroduce westerly Hemet wastewater flows and loads to the San Jacinto Regional Water Reclamation Facility. EMWD staff determined that the facility will soon need the additional aeration air capacity provided by the proposed Blower No. 5 which will be installed within the existing blower building utilizing the space reserved for Blower No. 5 and integrated with the current four blowers and all components of the aeration system. On May 14 EMWD staff issued a request for proposals for the design services. Three companies provided bids. The California Government Code requires professional services agreements to be awarded based on demonstrated competence and the professional qualifications necessary for the satisfactory performance of the services required rather on the lowest price. Carollo, which is headquartered in San Diego, had the highest-ranked proposal. Carollo has previously completed similar EMWD projects to the district’s satisfaction.

Temecula Creek Golf Club hosts SpeedGolf U.S. Open

The U.S. Open tournament for SpeedGolf took place July 25-26 at the Temecula Creek Golf Club. “It went phenomenally well,” said SpeedGolf USA Temecula chapter founder and president Jon Flietstra. SpeedGolf scores add the 18hole golfing score to the time consumed from the start to the finish. “It’s speed plus your golf score,” Flietstra said. The spectators are allowed to use carts, but the players must run at some pace when they are not positioned to hit the ball. The golfers run between holes as well as between shots on a particular hole. The running pace slows prior to a shot. Following the 18th hole, a sprint to the finish line occurs before the golfer’s final time is added to the score. “It’s a fun way to play,” Flietstra said. SpeedGolf also allows a round of golf to be played in the morning before work or before activities of the golfer’s children. “It’s

a fun way to get the golf in,” Flietstra said. Flietstra was on the golf team at Mayfair High School in Lakewood. He has lived in Temecula for nine years. His son, Joah, is now nine and attends Vintage Hills Elementary School in Temecula. Work and family issues kept Flietstra off the golf course for a time. “I ran a marathon,” Flietstra said. “I never want to do that again.” Temecula Creek Golf Club has three nine-hole courses, and the SpeedGolf U.S. Open used the 3,348-yard Creek course and the 3,436-yard Oaks course. Those distances do not include yardage between the hole and the next tee, and an errant shot increases the running distance. An 18hole SpeedGolf round typically involves running just under five miles. “It really depends on how straight you’re hitting it,” Flietstra said. Although Flietstra has no desire to run another 26.2-mile marathon, he decided to use his running for golf while also reducing the time spent on his

rounds from what had been approximately a six-hour commitment. The Temecula chapter of SpeedGolf USA first played on the Temecula Creek Golf Club courses in May 2023. The chapter plays rounds on Wednesdays and Sundays, and approximately 15 golfers participate on a given morning. The Temecula chapter hosted a tournament in 2024. SpeedGolf USA president Scott Dawley attended and made the decision that the 2025 U.S. Open would be held at the Temecula Creek Golf Club. Last year’s U.S. Open was deemed successful, and Dawley notified Flietstra that the 2026 U.S. Open would also take place in Temecula. “Temecula Creek is just set up so perfect for it,” Flietstra said. Approximately 50 volunteers helped with various aspects of the 2026 tournament. “It’s really cool getting the community buyin,” Flietstra said. “The staff at Temecula Creek is awesome,” Flietstra said. “This doesn’t happen without them.” The adult competition con-

sisted of two 18-hole rounds. The junior division golfers only played nine holes. Joah Flietstra won the Junior 8-10 division with a score of 65:41 obtained from 40 strokes and a time of 25:51. Temecula’s Kyle Peyton was seventh in the Open Division with a 251:59 score, which included rounds of 76 and 83 strokes along with times of 46:19 and 46:40. Peyton placed third among Americans in the Open Division; Nic Goodin of Missouri had a score of 250:52 to place fifth and Phoenix golfer Gatjeak Gew had the sixth-place score of 251:53. Golfers came from not only throughout the United States but also from throughout the world for the SpeedGolf U.S. Open. England’s James Hardy won the Open Division with a score of 233:33. Lauren Cupp of Upstate New York was the Women’s Division winner and had a score of 289:17. Oregon’s Steve Vancil won the Legends 60+ Division with a score of 258:05, Bob Vietas made the trip from San Antonio and won the Seniors 50+ Division with a score of 296:10,

and Bermuda golfer Chris Parry had the low score of 257:35 in the Masters 40+ Division. John Haimes lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and went to the other side of the nation to compete in the Amateur Division he won with a score of 279:50. The Team Division was a nine-hole event with Goodin and Garrett Holt of Missouri taking first and having a score of 54:32. FlingGolf is also a variation of golf in which some shots are hurled rather than taken from the ground, and the 36-hole FlingGolf competition at the SpeedGolf U.S. Open was won by Morgan Montano of Albuquerque, whose score was 263:43. A nine-hole score of 68:30 gave Oregon’s Abram Rankin the Junior 11‑14 Division championship. A total of 43 golfers participated in the various divisions. “It’s neat having these people come to Temecula,” Jon Flietstra said. “It’s a fun thing to be a part of and see it all come together.” Flietstra is also involved in regular pace golf as an instructor. He is also the Linfield Christian golf coach.

Hemet to use Ambulance Service Contract Penalty Funds for paramedic training Joe Naiman for the Valley News If a private or contracted ambulance company does not meet contractual performance standards such as response time or minimum staffing it is subject to fine penalties. The City of Hemet will be using Ambulance Service Contract Penalty Funds to train paramedics. The Hemet City Council voted 5-0 August 11 to approve up to $130,000 of Ambulance Service Contract Penalty Funds for Hemet Fire Department paramedic training. The action also approved a

memorandum of understanding with the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee for participation in the Paramedic Upgrade Academy. The Cal-JAC Academy provides a comprehensive paramedic education program. The Paramedic Upgrade Academy is designed specifically for firefighters currently certified as Emergency Medical Technicians and provides comprehensive instruction including classroom education, laboratory training, clinical rotations, examinations, and field internship experiences required for National Registry certification

and California paramedic licensure. The academy curriculum consists of approximately 644 instructional hours beginning in August 2026. Tuition, books, licensing examinations, and required educational materials are funded through the Cal-JAC program, which receives grant funding for those expenses. The participating agencies are responsible for employee compensation, scheduling accommodations, and operational coverage during training. The Hemet Fire Department has enrolled three EMTs in the training course. Although the

course schedule is designed around shift rotations, allowing students to complete much of their training on off-duty days, certain mandatory class sessions directly overlap with scheduled duty days. The need to provide shift backfill during those overlapping periods represents the primary cost for the city, and the $130,000 appropriation will fund overtime backfilling which will be necessary on the various duty days each student is in class. Under the memorandum of understanding participating fire departments are responsible for sponsoring qualified personnel,

providing scheduling accommodations, maintaining workers’ compensation coverage, coordinating field internships, and ensuring adequate operational staffing throughout the training program. Any unused funds will be placed back under the Ambulance Penalty Fee fund balance to be used for future projects. When the Hemet firefighters complete the program they were be eligible for an additional 15 percent of their base salary, and that will be included in future year budgets.

Miller joins panel at ACWA Region 9 meeting in Temecula Joe Naiman For the Valley News Western Municipal Water District General Manager Craig Miller participated in a panel during the Association of California Water Agencies Region 9 conference July 17 at Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula. Region 9 encompasses Riverside, San Bernardino and Imperial counties. The conference, titled “Leading with Influence: Water Policy & Advocacy in a Changing Landscape,” focused on water policy and collaboration. I think it was a really interesting topic for our ACWA Region 9 members and our ACWA members in general,” Miller said. The discussion focused on building statewide support for water projects and policies. “We wanted to share how to develop coalitions to really move initiatives in a bigger environment than your own district,” Miller said. “I think the three panelists were all able to share very good examples of how we’ve been able to initiate change in processes and initiatives that have been stalled for a really long time.” Miller discussed Senate Bill

72, which passed the state Senate and Assembly last year without opposition. The legislation requires the California Department of Water Resources to develop a comprehensive strategic plan for the sustainable management and stewardship of the state’s water resources. “The state needs to be developing longer-term water supply for the benefit of the entire state,” Miller said. “That concept has not been happening for decades.” Miller said individual water agencies cannot independently develop projects or storage capacity to meet needs throughout California. SB 72 gained support from Democrats and Republicans, Northern and Southern California interests, urban and agricultural agencies and water districts of varying sizes.

“It’s for all water users in the state, not just water supply,” Miller said. Specific projects have not yet been selected and will be subject to review under the California Environmental Quality Act. “The job is to make sure that we figure out a list of projects to meet that goal, and that list of projects has to be supported by everyone so it doesn’t get bogged down in CEQA,” Miller said. Dyer discussed San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District’s strategic plan, which brought approximately 30 projects together under one framework. Miller said the approach also allows environmental mitigation to be coordinated among stakeholders. Denham addressed collaboration that led the San Diego

County Water Authority to approve water-transfer agreements with Western Municipal Water District and Eastern Municipal Water District earlier this year. “It really moved San Diego County Water Authority into this collaborative arena,” Miller said. “That was kind of a monumental shift in water supply management.” ACWA’s fall conference will be held Dec. 1-3 in Anaheim. Miller said he hopes the Region 9 panel will be replicated there. “I think we want to take what was presented at the local Region 9 conference and grow that into a statewide conversation,” Miller said. “We can’t do it without the state being involved and without partnerships that include all interests.”

sadly-orphaned neighbor girl Jeannette (Jordan Alexa Davis), are going to have to work together to survive, despite their strained relationship. I wasn’t digging the “nearly-broken family” dynamic in “The End of Oak Street.” Action and disaster movies have been milking this trope for decades, and the uninteresting Platt family storyline costs this movie my recommendation. But I was digging the dinosaurs. We get nice, long, well-lit shots of the creatures, and the harrowing action sequences are some of the best I’ve seen in a long time. I can completely understand someone else thinking that all the dino-action saves the movie for them, it just doesn’t for me. Grade: C “The End of Oak Street” is rated PG-13 for some strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language and suggestive material. Its running time is 99 minutes.

Greg (Ewan McGregor) and Denise (Anne Hathaway) Platt raise their teenage children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery) on Oak Street in the sickeningly sweet suburb of Flowervale, MI in 1982. The parents’ marriage is hanging by a thread and the kids hate being caught in the middle. But all that family drama is about to be interrupted by a most outlandish danger. Bright lights flash in the middle of the night. Pets go missing. Giant piles of dung appear in neighbors’ backyards. The neighborhood, thanks to a series of unexplained wormholes, is gradually switching places with land from 200 million years ago. Soon the area is infested with dinosaurs, and the new residents are less pleased to “meet” their neighbors as they are to “eat” them. The family, along with

Lauren Lopez graduated from Tahquitz High School in 2016. In January 2018 Lopez and the other occupant of a car were murdered at an intersection in San Jacinto, where Lopez lived. The Lauren Challenge was created to provide projects helping community members. “It’s been an outlet for us to redirect our grief,” said Lopez’s mother, Christina. The Lauren Challenge is providing backpacks for needy Hemet Unified School District high school, middle school, and elementary school students as well as for area foster children. The backpacks were delivered August 10 and included 251 beanies provided by the Machine Knitters Guild of San Diego. “The table was just covered with beanies,” Carlson said. “It’s a blessing, and I’m looking forward to the kids receiving that,” Christina Lopez said. The county fair demonstration allowed first-hand participation by those not in the guild. “It gave the public a chance to also be involved even if they just did a couple of lines of knitting, a couple of rows of knitting,” Carlson said. “They were able to be a part of our philanthropy, a part of our mission.” Carlson was raised on a dairy in San Jacinto and graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1984. She moved to Hemet in 1987 and her property now includes a ranch of rescue animals. Carlson has been hand spinning since she was 11 and machine knitting since she was 17. She purchased her first knitting machine when she was 17. In past years, Carlson has shown llamas and alpacas in the San Diego County Fair’s livestock breed competitions and has also used wool from her animals in the fair’s Home Made (previously Home and Hobby) exhibit competitions. This year the San Diego County Fair added a honey competition.

Honey had previously been part of the preserved foods competition and didn’t even have its own category, so Carlson entered her honey in the Other Than Listed class of the Other Soft Spreads division while also entering a preserve made from homegrown passion fruit and homegrown honey in the Other Than Listed, Fruit Base category of the Jellies division. fully next year it will be even a better show.” Carlson won six of her ribbons, including five first-place awards in the honey competition. She won all four Beeswax division categories: Purified Beeswax Block, Candles, Lip Balm, and Handcrafted Soap. Carlson also took first in the Raw Creamed Unflavored Honey class. Her Light honey entry placed fifth. The Beeswax division didn’t have a category for her beeswax melt flower arrangement, so Carlson entered that in the Decorative Crafts division of the Home Made exhibit. That did not place in the Other Decorative Crafts not listed category. Her three entries in the Home Made exhibit’s Machine Knitting division resulted in a first-place Baby and Children’s Items ribbon for her layette set and a third-place Best Beanie Ever award. Carlson also entered three items in the Fiber Arts division, and her dyed llama yarn placed first in the Fiber Dyeing class. “I was excited,” Carlson said of two first-place Homemade awards. “I can’t complain. There were a lot of entries this year,” Carlson said. “The numbers were up.” The llamas and alpacas arrived at the fair June 12. The performance classes were judged June 13, and the halter class competition was June 14. Carlson brought Sneakers, a four-year-old alpaca, and Admiral, a yearling llama.

The June 12 preparation with Sneakers kept him from being shown. “He spooked,” Carlson said. “It threw me head-on into a brick wall.” Carlson was taken to a trauma center. “The next day I came back to show performance,” she said. The performance competition has three components: the obstacle course, the public relations course (mimicking activities which would likely occur if a llama or alpaca is brought to a public event, on a visit to a school or other facility, or to the filming of a television segment), and the pack course. “I didn’t show Sneakers because of the accident,” Carlson said. Admiral was one of 19 llamas in the performance competition for llamas of all ages. He placed sixth, eighth, and tenth. “He’s not doing all that bad,” Carlson said. “He wasn’t even two years old.” Carlson added that she had a concussion when she showed Admiral. “I can’t say that I was on the top of my game, either,” she said. The injury forced Carlson to leave the fairgrounds prior to the June 14 showing. Admiral placed first in the yearling male class of the medium wool llama division. He then was named reserve champion for all medium wool males. “I needed something uplifting,” Carlson said.

Mt. San Jacinto College Welcomes More Than 400 StudentAthletes Back for the 2026-2027 Academic Year

San Jacinto —As Mt. San Jacinto College Eagles returned to classrooms across the district this week, more than 400 student-athletes representing 13 sports landed at the San Jacinto Campus Theater today for the annual Athletics Welcome Forum. The event brought together student-athletes, college leaders, coaches, and Athletics staff to celebrate the start of the 202627 academic and athletic year, connect students with resources, and reinforce the importance of success both in the classroom and in competition. MSJC Superintendent/President Dr. Tawny Dotson encouraged student-athletes to take advantage of the people and resources available to them and emphasized that asking for help is an important part of their success. “You have support systems at MSJC to help you succeed. Your coaches and faculty want to make sure that you can compete in the classroom and on the court. They are here to help you do that along the way,” Dotson said. “Here is my advice: If you have a question, ask. Do not fear the question. We have incredible, caring people everywhere at this institution who are here to answer that question for you; all you need to do is ask.” Dotson, who also serves as vice chair of the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A), told students they can expect to see her supporting the Eagles throughout the year. “You are going to see me cheering you on because I believe deeply in what this institution does,” Dotson said. “I believe deeply in the work you are doing as student-athletes, and I’m all in on your success.” Mt. San Jacinto Community College District Trustee Brian Sylva, who represents Trustee Area 1, recognized the perseverance required of student-athletes and reminded them that their responsibilities and potential extend well beyond athletics. “Thank you for pushing through one more rep and the late nights in the library; you’ve proven that you have the grit and dedication to get to this point,” Sylva said. “You are student-athletes, but also future leaders and community builders. The Board expects you to remain eligible, healthy, and successful. Success starts in the classroom and carries over into competition.” Sylva also recognized the behind-the-scenes work supporting MSJC student-athletes. “I’m deeply grateful to all the coaches and staff who work tirelessly to keep these programs running for you,” Sylva said. “Your coaches and staff sacrifice more than you’ll ever know to make your athletic experience possible.”

Patrick Springer, dean of Athletics & Student Life, said the forum helps establish a shared sense of purpose among student-athletes as they begin the academic and athletic year. “Our student-athletes bring tremendous energy, discipline, and pride to MSJC, and today is about reminding them that they are part of something bigger than any one team or season,” Springer said. “We want every Eagle to know that we are invested in their success as students first, as athletes, and as members of our community. Our coaches, faculty and staff are committed to giving them the support they need to reach their goals at MSJC and wherever their journey takes them next.” Competition for the 2026-27 year will soon get underway, including the Eagles football season at the HCN Bank Stadium at the Menifee Valley Campus. Since DeChon Burns became the Linfield Christian head football coach in 2013, the Lions shared the 2014 Ambassador League championship and won the 2024 Mesquite League championship outright. The Lions placed third in last year’s standings with a 3‑2 league record. Linfield entered the CIF Division 13 playoffs with a 4-6 record for the regular season. A first-round win and a 27-25 loss in the quarterfinals finalized the Lions’ 2025 record at 5-7. The number of returning players from the 2025 team doesn’t

Linfield will not have a junior varsity or freshman team this year. The varsity has 37 players. “Every year it’s a work in progress because you have a new team,” Burns said. Practice for the CIF season

began August 31. Linfield also had a spring practice session and a summer practice session. The Lions did not compete in a summer league. “Our core is good,” Burns said. Some coaches prefer a tough pre-league schedule to prepare players for league and CIF competition rather than easy victories. Linfield will travel to Perris for the August 21 season opener against Orange Vista. A Saturday home game against Mountain Empire, which is in Pine Valley east of San Diego, is scheduled for August 29. That will be followed by a Thursday home game September 3 against Wenatchee, which is in Washington about

150 miles east of Seattle. The Lions will return to Southern Section opposition September 11 at Ocean View in Huntington Beach and September 18 at home against Carter of Rialto. Imperial County is in the San Diego Section, and an October 1 home game against Brawley will conclude Linfield’s pre-league play. “I think we’ve got a good cross-section of competitive opponents,” Burns said. “It’s all about continued progress, doing things the right way,” Burns said. “If we do what we’re supposed to do the W and L column will take care of itself.”

Reflecting on her own educational journey, while being a busy mom and working full-time as the Soboba Preschool Director, Mojado said balancing everything has been a real challenge. “I often had to focus on finishing papers instead of letting the boys celebrate with their teams after a soccer tournament win,” she said. “They understood, and I’m grateful to have two amazing boys who support me.” Mojado said the recognition event truly motivates kids to work hard. “I was amazed by how many college graduates are pursuing teaching,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see so many future educators, especially at a

time when we need more Native teachers for both the preschool and Noli.” Vivanco said since they were celebrating academic achievement, the Tribal Council felt it was an appropriate time to focus on higher education, highlighting the many high school and college graduates. “We want to promote that as best we can and make sure we are giving our kids the opportunity to go on in whatever career paths they choose,” he said. “So today we have two ceremonial signings that we will be doing.” The first was with California State University, San Bernardino. Vivanco explained that the Memorandum of Understanding will allow graduating students to get automatic acceptance if they meet the minimum requirements for eligibility set forth by the school. It also allows the students to transfer admission. “What it does is, it opens that door,” Vivanco said. He then invited Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs A. Rafik Mohammed and Admissions and Outreach Specialized Recruiter Alex “Panda” Armendariz as well as Tribal Council Vice Chairwoman Geneva Mojado, Secretary Monica Herrera, Treasurer Adona Salgado, and Sergeant-atArms Daniel Valdez, to witness

University of La Verne Vice President for Enrollment Management Alaina Dunn was invited to sign the MOU that guarantees admission for enrolled Soboba Tribal members and Noli Indian School students who meet the university’s standard admission requirements. The school is also offering ongoing admission and enrollment training for teachers, counselors and parents, financial aid and scholarship workshops. The longterm partnership will expand access to higher education for Native American students while creating new educational and professional development opportunities for the Tribe’s workforce. “We know many times our youth are going to big colleges and sometimes it’s a culture shock, but these colleges have committed to helping our youths to make sure they can stay in a place that’s comfortable for them,” Vivanco said. “I think these two signings today will help guide our youth into the kind of future leaders we need. So again, on behalf of the Tribe, thank you to them.” Soboba also has existing MOUs with the University of Redlands and California State, San Marcos. Vivanco recognized

Soboba TANF and Noli staff for working on all the MOUs for the future success of Soboba’s youth. There were some spectacular prizes to be won by all the students as each had received a raffle ticket when they arrived and there were enough gifts to go around. From PS5 game systems and Apple iPads to 55-inch televisions, Dick’s Sporting Goods’ and Starbucks’ gift cards, there was much to get excited about. In closing, Chairman Vivanco reflected on the fact that over the years, this ceremony has grown from a small venue at the Soboba Springs Golf Course clubhouse where about 100-200 were in attendance. “Today we expected almost 600 people here to help celebrate our youth and all our graduates,” he said. “We know the event will continue to grow and that’s exactly what we are looking to have happen. The Tribal Council will continue to do the hard work to make sure that we can continue to support our youth, making sure they have every opportunity to attend college and achieve their career goals. Hopefully one day they will come back and be a productive member of our own community. Students, strive for your best; we’re here to support you. And thank you.”

Redshank Riders to host Obstacle Challenge Diane Sieker Staf f Writer

The Redshank Riders, a unit of Backcountry Horsemen of California, will host an Obstacle Challenge Sunday, Sept. 6, at the Stumblin L Ranch in Anza. The event will test partnership between horse and rider as teams navigate natural obstacles, with an emphasis on challenge rather than speed. Check-in begins at 8 a.m., with the first rider on course at 9 a.m. Divisions include in-hand, novice and open. Entry is $50 per rider and division with early registration by Aug. 30, or $70 the day of the event. Entries include a hamburger or hot dog meal. First-place winners will receive Dale Chavez buckles. Space is limited, so riders are encouraged to sign up early. The Stumblin L Ranch is located at 58331 Bailey Road in Anza. The Redshank Riders are a unit of the Back Country Horsemen of America, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving 194 local and state chapters across the country. BCHA chapters are active in 31 states and consist of about 13,000 members who are dedicated to keeping trails open for equestrians, hikers, cyclists and others on public lands. These groups work with trail partners and land management agencies to clear and maintain trails all over the United States. Birds, Brushes & Brunch offers creative morning at Dorland Mountain Arts Diane Sieker Staf f Writer Nature and creativity will come together Saturday, Aug. 29, when Dorland Mountain Arts hosts Birds, Brushes & Brunch, a morning designed to inspire participants through birdwatching, art and community. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon at Dorland Mountain Arts, 36701 Temecula Parkway in Temecula. Participants will begin with a gentle hike, observing Western Bluebirds and other local birds in their natural habitat. Following the hike, participants will capture their discoveries through simple art journaling using watercolor, sketching and words. No previous art experience is necessary. The morning will conclude with brunch, providing an op-

portunity to share inspiration, conversation and community. The cost is $65 per person and includes supplies. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars if desired. The event is open to those 16 and older, and space is limited. Registration is requested by Aug. 20. All proceeds will support Dorland Mountain Arts’ new Artist Cottage, a planned space where artists can create, connect and find inspiration.
