The Anza Phantom Artist has done it again the AVO has an exclusive preview of the next Anza sign. It is not quite done yet; the finishing touches are being added and soon it will appear on the scene. Can you guess who this is for? Watch for its appearance along a local roadway soon. If you have not heard, the reason the Phantom’s Anza signs have a rearing horse on them it is because he/she wanted to remember the herd of free roaming wild horses that once roamed in the southeastern part of the valley around Coyote Canyon Road were the Anza Borrego park lands roll up to meet us. Many remember them, though I believe sometime around 2003 they were removed to Montana then some were returned – not our horses but a small herd of wild horses. The past owner of the AVO, Carl Long, who died in the fall of 2010, housed these horses and cared for them at his ranch for many years. They are in someone else’s care now, but none roam free like they use too.
For those of you old enough to have voted before, there is nothing like the thrill you get when the candidates and issues you supported and voted for win. This is especially true for a presidential election. see page A-3

A Random Act of Kindness I was just thinking about how what the Anza Phantom Artist is doing for the community is an example of “A Random Act of Kindness.” I checked the Phantom’s Facebook site here and there and found two more signs have been placed; one for Hill Street up at the end of town and one down in Wilson Valley close to the dog training and boarding place, on Gene Road.

Anza Valley Artists have chosen a new leader in President Rosie Grindle. You may have seen Grindle around town, her big smile is hard to miss even under her cowboy hat she often wears. Five years ago, she moved to Anza to pursue a few things she loves best; horses and art. It is these passions that merge reflected in her art. Most of her artwork encompasses horses and western themes. But her life once was spent in the service of others solely as a custodian of some of Riverside County’s most prized public places. She served as a park ranger over Lake Skinner, Bogart Park, Gilman
Springs Ranch and two museums just to name a few. The last few years she spent at headquarters. All those years while pursuing her career, she had it in the back of her mind to actively pursue her painting when she retired. She joined the Anza Valley Artists right after she moved to Anza in December 2011 and the Redshank Riders too. There were only eight members in the AVA back then and Grindle served as VP for three of those five years. She is very excited at all the new members and how the group has grown in size and talent. She says each has a unique talent and story to share. During her career as a park ranger, many

The planned Anza High County Boys & Girls Club complex took a step closer to reality Oct. 15 with hundreds of residents and visitors enjoying the annual Renaissance Faire fundraiser off Highway 371 and Kirby Road. “What can I say,” said Renaissance Faire promoter Robyn Garrison, “Awesome, it was awesome. We had more vendors participating this year than last and almost all the churches.” It was the second year the Renaissance Faire has been held to help raise money to build the High County Boys & Girls club facility. Offering fun and games to the
Anza boys and girls and their parents were bagpipers, archery range, music by the Hamilton K-8 band, staged stick fights, costume contests, game quests for the youngsters, delicious barbecue food by the Fun Club and churches, bounce houses and a very special opening ceremony conducted by Anza VFW Post 1873 honoring the flag and VFW member Michael Mosley who was given the Thimble Club’s Quilt of Valor for his dedicated service in the U.S. Navy. Particularly enjoying the festivities were the honored Renaissance Faire Queen Teri Crutchfield and Princess America Daniels who were escorted throughout the faire by their royal court.

Will you answer the cry? Get out and vote! Jodi Thomas ANZAEDITOR@REEDERMEDIA.COM For those of you old enough to have voted before, there is nothing like the thrill you get when the candidates and issues you supported and voted for win. This is especially true for a presidential election. My first presidential election race was memorable. It was between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan in 1980. A lot was happening then. I was young in my early 20s, my husband and I had been married a year and a half and I was now a new mom. By then, the economy had tanked under President Jimmy Carter the evidence of which was all around us. One thing I will never forget are the long gas lines. In some places, people would wait for hours and the line would wrap around the block. When you finally got your turn at the pump, chances were good you were on fumes. All too often, the gas station would just run out of gas by the time you got your turn. You would drive your car to another line at another station and pray that you would make it to get gas this time. Can you imagine? True story; this scenario was prompted by a gasoline shortage (so we were told) that we as a nation have not seen since. We were self-employed and work was hard to come by and Carter’s then famous speech that “we will all just have to tighten our belts because nothing will be getting better anytime soon” did not sit well with us, nor most of the nation at that time. Add to that, Carter’s giving away of the Panama Canal, the Iran Hostage crisis was going on and with a botched rescue attempt after a diplomatic breakdown just furthered the country’s general feeling of hopelessness. Then Ronald Reagan came on the scene. Believe it or not during his run for president during 1979-1980, Ronald Reagan was vilified and held in contempt by the Democrats and not much more revered by the Republican Party, but the common
man loved him. They loved his common sense and go-to attitude and that fact he was not willing to settle for mediocracy like, President Carter had done at that time. I was told by someone recently that they did not think it was good to learn from our past, from history because we may get tied to it and repeat it. In my opinion, just the opposite has proven true. When a generation has experienced something traumatic, stood up and did the right thing in the face of great turmoil, those who experienced it firsthand did not forget the principles that brought them out from the turmoil and what saved them. But when generations to come are removed from the knowledge, the history of the victory over that great turmoil, without that guidance of the past, they soon forget the lessons learned. Now the world and our country again is in crisis, and it is time to weigh in and vote one’s conscience. With the upcoming elections and the precious right of being able to vote ahead of us, I am reminded of a story my dear grandmother wrote back in the mid-1970s. It shares what it was like for her as a young girl back in 1920 when women finally got their right to vote. Though she has since departed, her words still ring true. “Today, thanks to Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and many other leaders of the Woman Suffrage Movement, I, too, as a woman have the right to vote; and regardless of my economic status, property ownership, or religion, I can exercise that right which I consider not only a privilege but a duty and essential to intelligent voting, to keep myself informed about social issues and to seek to acquire knowledge regarding the qualifications of candidates; especially, those in positions of leadership.” - Gladys Phipps My grandmother was an amazing woman, brilliant, one might say, as she was afforded only a fourth-grade education growing up as a child, the rest was self-taught.
She was one of seven children born to a couple who loved them, yet struggled economically all her childhood. As a young woman, she worked as a seamstress working in a shirt factory. During the war, she became a machinist for an aerospace firm called Lundgren’s where she worked until she retired. During the mid-1970s she entered adult school to get her high school diploma. She finished in eight short months. This story along with a few others are some of my most prized possessions. They are a product of her quest to get her diploma. By Gladys Phipps It was in early November of 1920 that I was a child of five, that I had my first exposure to the world of politics. The Nineteenth Amendment has just been ratified, and Women Suffrage became national. In my home state of Missouri, the 1920 Presidential Election would be the first time that my mother and grandmother could exercise that precious right and privilege of participating in the election of our National leaders and other public officials; thus helping to determine governmental policies. Several days before Election Day, feverish preparations were underway for the “BIG PARADE, celebrating Women’s right to vote”. It was to take place in the small town where grandmother lived. I was thrilled that I was to have a small part in the celebration. The big day arrived! My sisters, Edna, Mary and I, in our crisply starched white dresses, with red, white and blue ribbons in our hair, along with many of our friends, rode on a large hay “rack” beautifully draped with bunting and towed by an Apperson Jackrabbit, which had huge, shiny

Industrial lighting design and artist Michael McEwen’s ‘Light Years Retrospective’ will shine at Park Exhibition Center IDYLLWILD – The Light Years exhibit is a retrospective of industrial designer Michael McEwen’s lighting designs from 1990-2016 and will be open from Oct. 21 through Nov. 17 at the Parks Exhibition Center on the Idyllwild Arts Campus, 52500 Temecula Road. Along with many early pieces made from assembled found parts
collected in salvage yards and thrift stores, the retrospective includes designs created since 2000 and built by McEwen’s studio, and two new pieces McEwen built this year representing new directions. Machine Age, Jules Verne’s futuristic Victorian contraptions or the Hoover Dam. The third-generation Californian and Pasadena native was drawn to all things mechanical at a young age from his skillful finagling of erector-set gizmos to dismantling and resurrecting bicycles and cars. The artistry inherent in these childhood pursuits incited McEwen’s subsequent creative endeavors when he performed classical ballet in the late ’70s and early ’80s and later studied textile design at University of California, Davis. As part of a screen-printing assignment, McEwen embarked on a field trip to photograph masses of tangled scrap metal at a junkyard. The fortuitous excursion reawaked McEwen’s
captivation with the intricacies of machinery. After further studies in jewelry making, silver smithing and sculpture, the industrial designer assembled his first found-object lamps and chandeliers, artfully integrating such forgotten cast-offs as optical lenses, aircraft fuel filters and cast iron furnace elements. He established McEwen Lighting Studio in 1990, initially creating custom pieces available through art galleries and private commissions. Eventually, the constraints of found objects gave way to the freedom of fabricating in metals, blown and kiln-formed glass, and hard woods. McEwen Lighting Studio’s current custom pieces and ready-made editions are more modern, emphasizing cleaner silhouettes than their
neoclassical antecedents. Through McEwen’s collaboration with prominent architects, McEwen Lighting Studio lighting can be found illuminating high-end private residences across the country, and shedding light on offices and commercial establishments, such as Pixar, DreamWorks Records, Chaya Brasserie restaurant and Silver Oak Cellars. The Special Deputy Frank Hamilton Highway dedication planned Thursday, Oct. 21, was postponed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s office and will be rescheduled for a later date.
The late Special Deputy, while not a recorded Cahuilla tribal member, has family married into the tribe. The postponement was a disappointed to the Rose Ann Hamilton a member of the Cahuilla tribe and the other Hamilton family members who have long looked forward to the Highway 371 me-
morial dedication to their relative. The dedication was to take place at tribal headquarters in Paui Park. A new date for the dedication has not been announced. Frank Hamilton was a special Riverside County Sheriff “Special Deputy” who was killed on April 8, 1895 in the line of duty. He is
believed to be the first sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty. To honor Special Deputy Hamilton a Senate Concurrent Resolution 51, authored by Sen. Jeff Stone (RRiverside), passed the Legislature on Jan. 27, 2016, and was enacted into law on Feb. 1. Part of the honor was to have a
portion of Highway 371 between Howard Road and Tribal Road dedicated to Special Deputy Hamilton. Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department Master Investigator Robert Masson, president of the Riverside Sheriff’s Assn. worked with the state, county and tribal leader to make the honor possible.
sleeping, watching out my bedroom window constantly, wanting every coyote dead that walked into my yard, then I realized that there is not a whole lot I can do. Nature is nature and who am I to be judge and jury. I have a bird feeder, a squirrelinator and a field camera. One morning I delighted to see a coyote being chased off by a great horned owl. Unfortunately my camera got the coyote in one picture and the owl in another. I have a friend who found a coyote, days later, with her chicken in his mouth and his leg caught in their perimeter fence. Poetic justice, I say. My philosophy is, we need the coyotes, it is the circle of life, they
keep our rodent population down, but if they could please eat more squirrels and rabbits and leave our pets alone. It is up to us to keep our own pets safe. Chicken coops should have wire or cement on bottom, make sure your gate is secure, bobcats and other animals can actually pull open or bend any regular gate with their brute strength. A roof on top is a must and a dog to protect them is always a good idea. Small pets should never be left without supervision, and cats should be in a cattery where they can have fresh air and be able to chase bugs and mice. My fight with coyotes is a fight we all share in a place called Anza, my home, my town.

This story revolves around the coyote. Who in Anza cannot say that they have heard a pack of coyotes howling in the distance or have had a favorite dog, cat or your chicken coop raided by this pesky critter? I could say, without
a doubt, each and every one of you. I myself have had many, I repeat, many loved pets taken by these stealthy animals. When I was young, living on Kellogg’s Ranch, Hap Kellogg, my brother and I would make what we would call a coyote potion, made to kill any coyote that drank it. Well this concoction was made with
rotten eggs, grain and dirt, milk and any other thing that we could think of that was readily available. Fortunately there was no poison involved, otherwise our ranch dogs would have been killed, but to us we were helping the ranch fight off the menacing coyote. Recently I have had my 15-yearold cat, piece by piece pulled through a chain link fence covered by 3-feet of poultry wire, (to keep rabbit and squirrels out of my yard). I thought that the 6-foot high fence along with hot wire inside and out, top to bottom was enough to keep my cats safe from them. But one morning I discovered a terrifying sight, I won’t go into the full details but I can tell you from the crime scene what had happened. Two or more must have had his interest, probably wagging their tails back and forth until he stuck his paw out in play. Bam! That was all it took. From that day point on I was on a coyote hunt. I have a field camera that I set up. I was so amazed on how many coyotes are coming through my yard right up to my back door. I was obsessed, not

‘Babes n’ Broncs’ ladies ride for charity at Lake Hemet Tony Ault TAULT@REEDERMEDIA.COM
Lake Hemet Campgrounds for the third year in a row welcomed the hard riding, sweet natured ladies who call themselves “Babes n’ Broncs.” This selective lady equestrian group from Norco horse country love to ride the trails around Lake Hemet and the Thomas Mountain all for their favorite charity, the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital neonatal clinic. The by invitation only ladies equestrian group, while not a 501(c)(3), pulls out all the stops to help premature children being cared for at the Loma Linda Hospital. Friday, Oct. 21, the ladies, driving horse trailers containing their favorite horses and mules, arrived at the campgrounds and with their husbands and male friends quickly began setting up large tents that will protect them from the weather. Tables with fresh tablecloths and settings were set up awaiting the Champagne dinner to celebrate the occasion, all in the outdoors. Leading the ladies was Sara Parker from Riverside who directed the setup operations while trail boss Judie Luce from Norco made sure

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors approved a rezone and a conditional use permit for a 7.61-acre property at the northwest corner of Anza Road and State Route 79. The supervisors’ 5-0 vote on
Sept. 13 changes the zoning from Rural Residential to Scenic Highway Commercial and grants a permit for a commercial building, an outdoor sales area and a parking lot. The change in zoning makes the property consistent with its Community Development: Commercial Tourist land use designation. The residential unit currently on the
property will be demolished. The conditional use permit allows for a 21,702 square foot commercial building to house a feed and grain store, a hardware store, a gift shop and a nursery-garden supply store. Years ago, in Anza, California, there began some strange occurrences. Right at first these strange happenings were so unrelated that no one really took notice. I think it began in October of 56. At that time, there were several farmers in Anza that had lost a number of pumpkins from their fields. It was felt that maybe Halloween had something to do with it. The next morning after the holiday many of the outhouses (which were commonly used back then) had mysteriously been turned over. Again, it was written off to pranksters. Later, in Anza a number of the more enterprising inhabitants began raising turkeys. The turkeys were raised in open pens and as expected some of them came up missing due to forages of what was thought to be the local coyote population as well as bobcats and other predators. the months of October and December. Later, in Anza the apple growers came and thrived for a while. I will say now that the apples grown in Anza were the tastiest that I have ever eaten. Now the apples began to come up missing and again the most of them began missing around October. Apples, pumpkin, watermelon, and even potatoes have come up missing in Anza. Growers of all plants beware! Even more bizarre occurrences began several people came up missing. They seemed to vanish overnight. Whoever or whatever was taking them seemed to prefer people that had recently gotten divorced. The whole thing came to a head in the late 70s It was discovered that there was a possibility of space aliens landing
on Cahuilla mountain. That along with several sightings of rather large foot prints in the valley led to one inescapable conclusion. Space aliens had abducted a Yeti from the Himalayas years ago and deposited him on Cahuilla Mountain and he made his way to Anza. It all became perfectly clear. Soon it was figured out that the Yeti was like a human in that it ate meat as well as the proper amount of vegetables and fruit. To this day the Anza Yeti roams this land, although no one has ever seen him (or her) These strange happenings still occur. And as it is now October again I thought it best to give the community the heads up. P.S the Yeti is mischievous and has been thought to have a sense of humor.
