We’re meticulous with the maintenance of our cars and tools, yet when it comes to our own engine, many men adopt a ‘wait until it breaks’ mentality. This June, with Men’s Health Week front and centre, it’s time to check-in with your GP and yourself. All it takes is one conversation to make a big difference.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that men are significantly less likely than women to see a GP over the course of a year (77.4% compared to 87.2%). When men do have a concern, research also shows three in four avoid the GP all-together, with more than half believing their problems will simply go away on their own. As a result, Australian men live, on average, four years fewer than Australian women.
As we move through our 40s, 50s, and 60s, the ‘invisible’ risks increase.
High blood pressure and cholesterol don’t always have early symptoms yet they are key drivers of cardiovascular disease. Thankfully, they can be monitored and managed when caught early.
