Người tù 27 năm, Thi sĩ-Ngục sĩ Nguyễn Chí Thiện sinh năm 1939 tại Hà Nội, mất năm 2012 tại Mỹ. Ông là em ruột của ông Nguyễn Công Giân, Trung Tá QL VNCH, sống ở tiểu bang Virginia. Ông bị cộng sản Bắc Việt bỏ tù 3 lần, tổng cộng 27 năm qua nhiều nhà tù miền Bắc, đặc biệt là nhà tù khét tiếng giết người Cổng Trời (Hà Giang). Trong tù ông bắt đầu làm thơ, lột tả cảnh tù tội và sự giả dối, tàn ác của cộng sản. Ra tù năm 1964, đến năm 1966 ông bị bắt lại vì những bài thơ chống chế độ thật độc đáo được nhiều người truyền nhau. Ông lại bị giam tù không án qua nhiều nhà tù, từ Phú Thọ, Yên Bái, Lào Cai đến năm 1977. Năm 1979 ông chạy vào Tòa Ðại Sứ Anh Quốc ở Hà Nội đưa tập thơ này, gồm 400 bài do ông ghi lại thơ đã làm trong tù và xin tị nạn chính trị. nhưng người Anh chỉ nhận tập thơ để chuyển ra ngoại quốc mà không giúp ông tỵ nạn chính trị. Bước ra khỏi Tòa Ðại Sứ Anh, ông liền bị bắt lại và bị tù tiếp cho đến ngày 28 tháng 10, 1991 mới thả, vẫn không có án.
