Celebrating Our 20th Year We are officially celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Viera Vision magazine as a legacy publication. It all started with Scott Miller, Executive Vice President Sales, Marketing & Community Development, and his vision of a community publication in 2005. I took over the magazine in 2012 and I find myself reflecting on just how rewarding, creatively fulfilling, and – at times- challenging this journey has been. Being part of something that has spanned two decades, documented historical events, and captured the heartbeat of our community is professionally satisfying. The Viera Vision has always been more than just pages to me personally – it’s been a mirror to the people, places, and progress that has made our area thrive and grow continually over the years. We celebrated the vision of the community’s founders and leaders, spotlighted school principals and the inspiring achievements with their students and watched with pride as our beloved zoo evolved into a regional treasure. We welcomed new business owners and enjoyed capturing the excitement and promise that comes with life-changing moments of their professional and personal lives. We’ve had the unique opportunity to share stories from a famous golf pro, a renowned chef, and even a TV personality, each revealing their favorite places and styles within their homes. Duda Farm Fresh Foods has graciously shared some of their top recipes using its ‘Dandy’ brand products, Urban Prime contributed their popular mushroom soup ingredients and instructions, and one of our fellow employees offered a favorite holiday cookie recipe. Our features and covers, many of them award-winning, would not be possible without the exceptional talents of local artists, writers and dedicated editors, designers and other team members collaborating with me for the publication. They continually bring their best ideas and passion to every issue we produce. Todd J. Pokrywa, COO, Real Estate Group and President of The Viera Company, is one of them and he shares our progress with each issue as we continue to grow and fulfill the vision of the master planned community of Viera.

Throughout the years, we’ve embraced every season with a fresh lens – highlighting art, culture, and the community events that bring us together. Living centrally coastal means that you are continually encouraged to head outdoors to enjoy the trails, parks, and various amenities in Viera and we highlight them as often as we can. Two unique covers stand out as creative highlights that I’m particularly thankful for. One invited each reader to slow down and de-stress during the busy holiday season with a special colorable cover and insert – an interactive nod to self-care and creativity. The other captured the strength and power of athleticism, featuring a standout player from USSSA’s Pride team midswing, giving us the opportunity to understand the speed and force behind every movement. These are just two examples of the imagination and inspiring moments that have made the publication journey so rewarding. Our loyal advertisers play an essential role in the life of the magazine. Their faith in our mission and the value of storytelling helps ensure that the voices, achievements and milestones of our community continue to be shared, celebrated, and remembered. We reach more readers throughout the year with their support. I’ve had the honor of being the Editor-in-Chief for twelve years and it’s been one of the most meaningful projects I work on each year at The Viera Company. We have an official designation in the Library of Congress and as we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate you – all the smiling residents, visionary builders, small businesses, essential services, students, educators, and the incredible individuals who share their time for a moment and allow us to tell their stories. TOWN CENTER PARK Q: What is behind the fence? There are two parts to the park, the food and beverage area is called Lakeside Social, operated by the owners of the highly successful 4th Street Fillin Station Gastrobar & Grill. Lakeside Social will feature premium food truck restauranteurs with an architectural centerpiece open air beverage pavilion. Adjacent to Lakeside Social is a park area with a new stage and performance area with an open lawn for events and bring-yourown-chair seating. This park will be named Lakeside at Viera Town Center, which will be managed and operated by the Central Viera Community Association, Inc. Q: What Inspired the creation of this new park? Viera’s master plan has always envisioned purposeful communal places where residents and guests can gather for their enjoyment and relaxation. After multiple iterations and a few economic cycles, we are very pleased to fulfill the long-standing promise of this important element of the vision for Viera. The Viera Town Center has grown organically over the last few years and this park is a culmination of our vision and input from residents and stakeholders alike. The end result is a park with elements drawn from other successful gathering places such as Celebration Park in Naples and Boxi Park in Lake Nona. 8

We have combined the food truck element with the entertainment element to create Lakeside Social and Lakeside at Viera Town Center. Q: What makes this space unique? Located on a lake overlooking the Duran par 3 golf course and Development Center, this park is at the heart of the Viera Town Center and the entire master planned community. Lakeside at Viera Town Center and Lakeside Social are walkable for many residents of the surrounding luxury apartments, homes, and hotel guests and really delivers that quintessential casual Florida experience in a fun and clean family-friendly setting. Lakeside Social is a complementary use to Urban Prime Marketplace + Restaurant by offering additional entertainment and premium food truck options which will further enhance the experience for visitors and residents of the Viera Town Center. Q: Will there be regular events or live performances at the pavilion? One of the primary purposes of Lakeside at Viera Town Center stage and open lawn is to enjoy local and intimate performances in a casual and clean setting. There will be regularly scheduled events and performances in keeping with the family-friendly theme.

Q: .What kind of food and drinks can visitors look forward to? Lakeside Social will feature a full-service bar with craft cocktails, beer and wine and a curated selection of the area’s best food truck offerings. Q: How do you see this park bringing the community together? Anytime we create a place that allows residents and guests to gather in well thought out space, we enhance the social fabric of Viera and provide a venue where new friendships can form, existing ones can grow, and family bonds can strengthen. Q: What type of family-friendly features like seating areas, lawn games or shaded zones will there be? There will be covered dining areas with tables by the food truck park, a central covered outdoor bar area, a lakefront deck area with tables, and a lawn area by the stage.

David Weekley Homes is joining Viera as the community’s 10th Authorized Builder. Founded in 1976, this national homebuilder is known for its commitment to energy efficiency, personalized home design, exceptional customer service, and its signature CARE program. With their new development, Encore, set to begin next year, we spoke with Sam Abruzzo, Division President in Orlando, to learn more about their home offerings and company philosophy. Q. How would you describe the company’s overall philosophy or mission? David Weekley Homes was founded in 1976 in Houston, Texas, with a purpose of making a difference in the lives of others. What types of community and homes will you be constructing in Viera? We are bringing Encore by David Weekley Homes, our 55+ lifestyle division, to Viera. Our homes will be open-concept, single-level floor plans with options for personalization. They will range from approximately 1,520 to 2,800 square feet of living space. Q. How many homes will be part of your project and when will construction begin? David Weekley Homes will have a total of 221 homesites. Construction is expected to begin in Q4 2026 with the anticipation of opening for sales in spring 2027. Q. How much customization can customers expect to make with your floor plans? One of the most exciting parts of building a new home is personalizing it

to fit your style. The process begins with selecting your homesite and floor plan, any architectural FlexSpaceSM options, and finally your finishes and other design selections. Q. Can you tell us more about your energy efficiency elements with every home? All David Weekley homes are not only constructed above code requirements, but they also follow building science standards and principles to understand the physical behavior of the building as a system and how this impacts energy efficiency, durability, comfort and indoor air quality. Our David Weekley EnergySaver homes feature the latest energy-efficient building science techniques, and our construction practices include: • Advanced wall framing, which reduces the lumber usage and waste while creating walls 50% wider than standard framing, allowing 50% more insulation. • State-of-the-art windows and insulation materials to minimize heat from the sun keeping your home cool and minimizing air leakage through advanced air sealing techniques in the walls. • Right-sized air conditioning along with fresh air systems and advanced filtration, which avoid air leakage resulting in improved comfort and lower utility bills. It is the most important question. I first ask the customers how many bedrooms and baths they need, and whether they want a formal living room and dining room. Possibly, they just want a large great room and informal dining room. In addition, I ask which rooms get the best view, since most of our homes are backing up to the water or preserve. In Aripeka, we also have to consider how the trees are going to be preserved. That may force the customers to reprioritize their room locations. 22

From maternity to cardiology, new facilities, equipment, and programs geared toward meeting the needs of local community. The adage “Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening” could very easily replace the traditional “Pardon our Dust” construction signs at Viera Hospital. Over the next 18 months, Viera Hospital will roll out a series of ambitious projects designed to expand access, reduce wait times, and deliver more specialized care from maternity and cardiology - to gastrointestinal and surgical services. “It has certainly been no secret to anyone that the closure of Orlando Health’s Rockledge Hospital in April has been challenging for our community – our patients, their loved ones, EMS, transport teams, and hospitals and provider offices across the Space Coast,” said Victor Vargas, MD, Health First Chief Medical Officer – Hospital Division. “We’re immensely proud of and thankful for the Health First Medical Group OBGYN physicians and Brevard Physician Associates’ Emergency physicians, and the care teams that have managed the incredible surge in volumes over these past few months. This challenge is not over, but we are working to support these teams and alleviate the surge.”

More Beds/More Space After the 2024 opening of the Labor and Delivery unit, half of the hospital’s fifth floor is primed for expansion and usage.

To further support maternal care, Viera Hospital has launched an OB Hospitalist Program in July 2025, providing 24/7 in-hospital physician coverage for obstetric emergencies — a significant upgrade in responsiveness and continuity of care. “We saw explosive growth in the Mother/Baby unit, which opened in August 2024 — greater than 30% more deliveries than we had previously at Cape Canaveral Hospital,” Mullowney said. That increase, along with the closure of Orlando Health Rockledge’s labor and delivery unit, created challenges for OB-GYNs juggling both hospital and clinic responsibilities. “Physicians are constantly coming to the hospital from the Birth Suites to take care of the emergent needs,” Mullowney explained. “It’s really tough to be in two places at one time taking care of everything. The OB Hospitalist Program will allow in-house physicians to manage emergencies as they happen. This will allow Viera to triage every patient immediately, handle urgent needs on the spot, and focus on the quality and safety of the program — giving our community timely care they can rely on.” Beyond maternal care, Viera Hospital is also addressing growth in other key service areas. To meet increasing surgical demand, the hospital is expanding its operating suite with two additional rooms.

“We’ve been waiting for the right time and purpose for that space, and now we’re moving forward with construction to add at least 20 inpatient beds,” said Mike Mullowney, president, Health First Hospital Division. “Given the growth in our Mother/Baby services, we’re also designating four of those beds to support that program - allowing us to continue meeting the needs of our community as well as the continued demand in women’s health.”

Viera currently has six operating rooms, and Health First is adding two more for a total of eight that will be completed and estimated in December of 2025.

Construction on the new inpatient unit is expected to be completed by spring 2026. Once open, the added capacity will help ease pressure on the emergency department, where patients have at times faced delays waiting for inpatient beds.

Cardiac care also is entering a new chapter at Viera with the introduction of advanced heart rhythm services — a major step forward for local patients.

Gastroenterology services are also expanding with the opening of a newly built endoscopy suite this July. The upgraded space features three procedure rooms and is designed to support both elective and inpatient GI care. The added GI space is essential to keeping up with the growing volume of both elective and inpatient procedures.

Enhanced imaging capabilities are also planned. A state-of-the-art CT scanner will be installed at the nearby Viera Medical Plaza by March 2026, expanding outpatient access while freeing up in-hospital imaging for emergency and inpatient needs. “We are adding a new state-of-the-art CT scanner to the Viera Medical Plaza, which will allow us to continue to give really good outpatient access for everybody that needs CT scans, while allowing the two CT scanners we have in the hospital to be better used for supporting our emergency department and inpatient needs,” Mullowney said. Outside the hospital, Health First is expanding access in Rockledge with the development of a new freestanding emergency department, expected to open by the end of 2026. “The freestanding ER in nearby Rockledge will provide an additional access point for emergency department care and also an opportunity for things that are not life threatening to give them another avenue of access versus coming into the hospital,” Mullowney said. With several major projects already underway, Health First is also exploring additional opportunities to meet community needs. “We’re working through future development opportunities, and we want the community to know we’re committed to growing alongside them — to meet the needs of our friends, neighbors, families and colleagues. These plans and investments are not just about infrastructure – they are part of our ongoing commitment to this community,” Mullowney said. “Being able to support our community in meaningful ways is part of our mission.”

5-Stars … AGAIN! For the third straight year, Viera Hospital has been awarded the highly-coveted 5-star overall rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Each year, CMS assigns star ratings to U.S. hospitals based on 46 hospital quality measures, which are divided into five quality categories: patient experience, safety of care, mortality, readmission rates, and timely and effective care. In August, CMS released its Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings for 2025, and Health First’s Viera Hospital was one of only 290 U.S. hospitals (and one of only 10 in Florida) to earn the top 5-star rating.

“

This recognition ties a celebratory bow around the package of our many ongoing projects – and I could not be prouder of the hard work, dedication, and passion each and every one of our physicians, nurses, associates and volunteers bring to Viera Hospital’s patients and community each day,” said Mullowney. “This incredible work could not be recognized any better than with a third straight CMS 5-Star rating - placing us among only 10 hospitals in the state of Florida.

“

“We are upgrading all of our equipment to be able to offer electrophysiology procedures, which will be opening in September 2025,” Mullowney said. “Right now, patients have to travel to other facilities in the county for these services, so this marks an exciting beginning as we bring advanced cardiac care right here to Viera.”

Though Reckless survived the incident, she needed care. Both mother and calf were rushed to SeaWorld Orlando, where Reckless underwent multiple major surgeries, and Churro received an abundance of tender loving care. Around two years later, back in good health and with satellite tracking devices provided by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute, mother and child were released at Port Everglades, where Reckless had been previously sighted on several occasions. The tracking devices would help their rescuers to keep tabs on the little family as they re-adapted to living in the wild. Things didn’t go as expected for Churro, however. The SeaWorld team had hoped Reckless would teach her daughter proper manatee behavior, but because Churro was now older and big enough to be weaned, Reckless’ mothering instincts did not extend as far as pampering her now teenaged daughter. Immediately upon release, Reckless swam away, leaving Churro to fend for herself. Churro didn’t follow Reckless but remained in the same area where she had been released. Members of the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP), a group of non-profit, private, state, and federal entities that participate in the rescue, rehabilitation, release, and post-release monitoring of manatees, quickly discovered Churro needed manatee mentors to learn behaviors critical to

Churro was rescued again, this time in February of this year, and transported back to SeaWorld, though this time for a shorter period. She needed extra care, but she was not critical, making her a perfect candidate for the new Manatee Rehabilitation Center at Brevard Zoo. Churro was off to Viera, becoming one of the first two patients at the newly opened facility, made possible by a $2 million grant from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Research Institute. Traveling alongside her was Randa, patient number two at the zoo. The pair arrived on April 2. “We picked up both Churro and Randa on the same day from SeaWorld,” Downey said. “Due to their size, they could both fit in the truck together.” Churro is currently tipping 600 pounds, and should be released in the next few weeks, as long as she gets the all-clear in her next physical. Randa, on the other hand, will remain at the Brevard Zoo at least through this winter possibly longer - since she weighs only 400 pounds. Adult manatees typically weigh 1,000 pounds or more. While Churro is quickly catching up in the weight department, Randa still has a long way to go before reaching a healthy size. “She will likely stay with us into early 2026,” Downey said. “At 400 pounds, she still has some 39

growing to do before returning to her natural range.” Randa’s backstory illustrates how vulnerable these formidable-looking animals can be. On a cold January day in 2025, Randa was rescued from the DeSoto Canal in Satellite Beach. Manatees, like humans, don’t do well in cold weather; cold stress is the manatee version of hypothermia in humans and can be as equally devastating with manatees. “She was thin and showing signs of cold stress,” Downey explained. “Manatees like the water nice and warm. Anything below 68 degrees is too cold.” Manatees affected by cold stress become lethargic and don’t eat as well. Whitish spots appear on their face, flippers and paddle-shaped tail. They become vulnerable to diseases and suffer from severe malnutrition. The good news is that since Randa has been in the Zoo’s care, she has perked up and her appetite is back. The fact that the water in her tank is meticulously kept at 80 to 81 degrees helps keep her toasty, just as manatees like it. Manatees eat eight to 10 percent of their weight a day, which in terms of romaine lettuce---manatee food of choice while in rehab---translates into five cases of the green stuff every day. Brevard Zoo is working on securing permits for native seagrass to provide the animals to better prepare them for their return to the wild. Randa and Churro have bonded at the Zoo, waking up together to their romaine breakfast after a night of sleeping side by side. They may squabble over a particularly attractive head of lettuce, but they otherwise are best buddies who are finally enjoying the good life, thanks to senior conservation manager Downey and conservation zoologist Kylie Lawson, who work together with the Zoo’s veterinary team in realizing the treatment plan for each patient. “We are both full-time staff with duties split between manatees and our other conservation projects,” Lawson explained. Both Downey and Lawson are well experienced in the care and feeding of this special species. “I was on the SeaWorld Rescue Team 40

for over 20 years and Kylie was with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Manatee Rescue and Research Team for over three years,” Downey said.

cases, allowing SeaWorld staff to focus on animals needing critical care. The facility can handle up to six manatees, depending on size and weight.

A day in the life of a manatee

“Brevard County has a large population of manatees,” Lawson said. “This center will provide space for non-critical manatees to move from critical care facilities to free up space for more critical animals. Currently, there are two critical care facilities in the state, so capacity is limited. Having a local facility available helps with the urgent care they need with shorter transport times for the animals.”

Caring for manatees or “sea cows,” as they are lovingly called because of their slow-moving nature, is an all-day job. “A typical day starts with feeding breakfast and opening up the space for the day,” Lawson explained. “Then we start on our pool system duties to make sure they are running smoothly and correctly. This includes backwashing the filters to make sure we have clean water flowing through, emptying out the filter baskets, and netting out and scrubbing the pool to keep it clean. Feedings happen throughout the day, with another round of pool maintenance in the afternoon. The last feeding happens around 4 p.m. and we clean up and lock everything up for the night.” Caring for manatees is also a long-term--and expensive---commitment. “When an animal is struck by a boat, it can take several months or even years to fully recover,” Downey said. “As for manatees that are emaciated, it also takes several months for them to put on the weight that was lost. That’s where Brevard Zoo can be a key facility to help out.” The Zoo’s Manatee Rehabilitation Center dovetails SeaWorld’s critical care facility by helping with the acute care

The Manatee Rehabilitation Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide immediate care to stable, non-critical manatee patients that need additional monitoring, weight gain or better weather conditions before they can be released back into the water. The complex includes a 20-foot round tank, which can hold two subadult manatees, and two 40x20 oval tanks, which can each hold two to four manatees. The Center is equipped with a walkin cooler to store manatee diets, a life support system to keep the pools operating efficiently, and a transport truck at the ready for rescues and releases. Several cameras allow the animal care team to monitor patients 24/7. All patient care at the Center is administered with the oversight of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the MRP, which will

ultimately decide when a manatee is ready for release, as well as on an optimum release location. Zoo staff will continue to be involved with manatee releases. Brevard has long been a go-to destination for manatees, thanks to the 72 miles of shoreline shallow waters once awash with seagrass. In recent years, the Space Coast has been at the center of a troubling increase in manatee deaths, largely linked to algal blooms caused by human activity. These blooms have severely reduced the seagrass that manatees rely on as their primary food source. The situation became so concerning that in 2021, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared an Unusual Mortality Event, following the loss of 1,100 manatees statewide—358 of them in Brevard County alone. This federal designation helped unlock critical resources to support rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation efforts for these gentle marine mammals. The Zoo has been helping with manatee rescues, releases, and transports since 2016. The transport truck used is lined with soft foam so the animals can be comfortable. Sprayers keep them wet and blankets keep them warm. Large stretchers and slings help hoist the animals into the truck. In the recuperation tank, a small crane assists in lifting the animals in and out of the water for weights and physicals. To bring seagrass back into the Indian River Lagoon, the Zoo’s Restore Our Shores initiative engages staff and thousands of volunteers on living

shoreline solutions that include planting and monitoring native seagrass species to provide natural habitats and food source for marine life. The team has been using seagrass grown at its own nursery, a built-in partnership with the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute Nursery in Melbourne Beach. Beyond manatees In between manatee duties, Downey and Lawson also focus on other species within the Zoo’s conservation projects, including the Florida grasshopper sparrows, the Perdido Key beach mice and frosted flatwoods salamanders. The Florida grasshopper sparrow, considered this country’s most endangered bird species, is found in only a few areas of Central and South Florida. In 2021, approximately 100 of the birds were estimated to exist in the wild. Such a significant decline is due primarily to habitat loss. Fortunately, Brevard Zoo's conservation breeding program, started that year with resident sparrow pairs, has significantly increased their numbers. The 2024 nesting season alone resulted in 81 of the tiny birds successfully hatching and being released into the wild. The Perdido Key beach mouse, like the sparrow, faces critical challenges for survival because of habitat loss, yet the species is essential for the integrity of the coastal ecosystem. Seeds stored by these miniscule rodents grow into adult plants that help stabilize dunes and thus provide greater protection to the local infrastructure during hurricanes. The Zoo’s breeding program has produced many offspring that have been

released in Perdido Key to help the wild stock rebound. Frosted flatwoods salamanders are also at imminent risk of extinction in the next decade, again because of habitat loss and irregular weather patterns caused by climate events. Brevard Zoo has partnered with the Amphibian Foundation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited institutions to create a safeguard population that could supplement the wild population as needed. “It’s always a busy day at the conservation department!” Lawson said. Manatees, as well as sea turtles, will figure prominently in the Zoo’s sister campus, the future Bowen Aquarium and Conservation Center. “We will have both sea turtles and manatees in an area for guests to see at the Aquarium, and we will also have a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital with live feed to the procedures,” Downey said. The Bowen Aquarium will be equipped to handle both acute and critical cases and will do so while keeping visitors informed and updated on new patients. Brevard Zoo continues to build upon its already significant reputation for conservation efforts by lending a muchneeded hand to ensure the future of these gentle marine mammals that are an iconic Florida species.

Bowen Aquarium and Conservation Center It’s not easy to build a world-class aquarium, particularly during our volatile times. When the Bowen Aquarium was originally on the drawing board, the estimate was $85 million for the hard costs associated with the project. That was in 2021, but only two years later, construction costs have increased significantly, fueled by economic uncertainty, labor shortages and supply chain issues, as well as by the addition of new components such as the manatee critical care center. “It turned what essentially felt like a water park element into a more appropriate nature place space,” said Zachary Marchetti, community engagement manager. “We also confirmed which elements could be in the first phase and which we wanted to reserve for future growth. As expected, construction costs continue to grow and there is uncertainty in the market right now.” Earlier this year, the Zoo contracted

a firm to conduct an updated cost estimate for the project. No hard bids for construction have been requested yet and no construction contracts have been awarded. “We are working on financing and setting a hard date to break ground,” Marchetti said. In addition to the manatee rehabilitation complex, changes since the campaign launched in 2021 include reengineering the filtration systems to increase sustainability of the entire site and replacing the original waterplay area with a mission-focused adventure play area. To fund the project, the original five-year campaign aimed to raise $100 million, $85 million for the aquarium and $15 million for the Zoo. “In just over three years, we have raised over $87 million with over $70 million committed for the aquarium,” Marchetti said. “The great majority of

the funding is coming from individuals but there is a corporate and public element as well.” The Space Coast Tourist Development Council has allocated $15 million toward this transformational project. “The design team estimates construction will take between two and three years after groundbreaking, putting 2028 as the target date for welcoming the community to what will truly be a celebration of the irreplaceable waterways we are so fortunate to live alongside,” Marchetti said.

Luke Rodgers and Elizabeth Youngs, Teacher of the Year at Viera High School

Many of us remember that one special teacher, that special individual who helped us navigate the bumpy trek into adulthood. The lessons that memorable educator taught us went above and beyond the subject matter he or she was supposed to cover, and through their guidance we learned what it took to accept patience as a means of reaching our goals, to play fair, to seek answers to questions, to work with others and to care for each other.

Such a teacher is Elizabeth Youngs, chair of the science department at Viera High School. “She’s a great teacher and a great leader,” said Viera High School principal Heather LeGate. Youngs was among the recipients of the 26th Annual Exemplary Science Teacher Award, presented by the Space Coast Science Education Alliance (SCSEA) at the end of last year. The SCSEA, an affiliation of diverse education and science agencies, includes organizations such as Brevard County Natural Resources Department, Brevard Public Schools, the City of Melbourne Public Works and Utilities, and others. Each year they officially recognize the efforts of science teachers who demonstrate best practices in the field of science instruction. Youngs is one of only four teachers selected for the honor in 2024. “These are teachers who go above and beyond,” said Kevin Smith, SCSEA president. “Elizabeth is a great mentor of students and of other teachers.” The SCSEA award is the latest in a list of recognitions Youngs has earned. She was named Teacher of the Year from 2001 to 2002 at DeLaura Middle School in Satellite Beach and Teacher of the Year at Viera High School from 2019 to 2020. She also holds national board certification in middle school science. SCSEA member Guytri Still worked closely with Youngs for many years and knows how she touches the lives of her students. “She is committed to seeing her students succeed and has been willing to put the extra time above and beyond the classroom to make sure her students have every opportunity to succeed,” Still said. “She has done an exemplary job. However, for her, teaching is not a job. It is a commitment to help every one of her students.” What is surprising is that teaching is Youngs’ second career. A former environmental engineer for a NASA subcontractor, the Rockledge resident entered the field of education 29 years ago, 13 of which have been at Viera High School. She never looked back.

“Teaching is a passion,” she said. “It’s heartwarming to see the light bulb light when students understand the concept being taught. I continue looking forward to each school day.” Youngs must indeed love her job, because she seems to be always at school. “She gets here early and she leaves late, and she works through the summers,” LeGate said. Youngs directs science research at all high school grade levels and teaches forensic science classes to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Her science research students routinely win county science fairs and advance to state. One student this year will be participating in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. Her forensic science classes teach scientific concepts, but just as importantly, instill the importance of time management, finding trusted sources, collecting and analyzing data, communicating with peers and superiors, and writing clearly, all lessons that will serve her students well in the years ahead.

A Teacher To Remember

Viera High graduates, some of whom have gone on to become doctors, PhDs and researchers, enjoy reconnecting with their former teacher and mentor, and Youngs always loves to hear what her former students have achieved. Current senior Avery Johnson knows she will not forget Youngs. “She has been so supportive over my four years in high school and she has always been willing to spend extra time to help us,” she said. “She has been willing to help me in all aspects of life. She always wants the best for all of her students and pushes us to do our best always.” Youngs is also always on the lookout for professional opportunities to pass along to the faculty, making it a point to get together with teachers in other departments to discuss their needs and concerns and to offer suggestions. “Doing this gives me an added insight into what is being taught in other disciplines, plus it allows me to transfer information from one area of science to the other,” s he said. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and Youngs, who admits entering “Medicare age,” plans to retire from Viera High in four years. However, while she may not be in the classroom every day, she will not stop teaching in one form or another on a volunteer basis. “I can’t imagine not being involved with teaching,” she said. “I hope to continue in some way.” 57

VIERA'S BIG YEAR SOARS The inaugural Viera’s Big Year officially wrapped up on December 31, 2024, and it proved to be an extraordinary celebration of Brevard County’s rich birdlife. Over the course of twelve months, local birders—from seasoned experts to first-time enthusiasts— took to Viera’s wetlands, forests, and grasslands to record sightings and compete for the top spot. Using eBird. com, participants not only tracked their own tallies but also contributed meaningful data to global bird research and conservation. The results were nothing short of impressive. A total of 27,453 birds were documented, representing 193 unique species. The most commonly spotted feathered residents included the Boattailed Grackle, White Ibis, and Anhinga, while the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands stood out as the competition’s birding hotspot, yielding nearly 15,000 sightings alone. In the end, four talented birders claimed top honors. First place went

to Ethan Landreville, who identified an astounding 184 species and took home the $1,000 grand prize. Michael Blomquist followed in second place with 126 species ($500 prize), while Alex Albaugh and Camille Merrell shared third place, each documenting 106 species and splitting the $250 award. Beyond the numbers, Viera’s Big Year showcased what makes Brevard County a true birding paradise. With its diverse habitats and its prime location along the Atlantic Flyway, the area offers birders unparalleled opportunities to observe both resident and migratory species. The competition brought the community together in appreciation of this natural wealth while spotlighting the important role birding plays in conservation. To learn more about the experience from a champion’s perspective, we sat down with Ethan Landreville, the 2024 Big Year winner, to hear his insights on what it takes to compete, his favorite moments in the field, and why Viera is such a special place for birdwatchers.

also applies to photography: if you're searching for a particular shot and know where the bird will likely emerge from (such as a heron rookery), then being patient and staking it out are a must.

Tell us a little about yourself.

How do you handle difficult lighting conditions or unpredictable movements?

What is your favorite bird species to photograph, and why?

Photographing birds can be extremely difficult depending on how far away the bird is, how fast or unpredictably it is moving, or how good the lighting is. Generally, it's good to always be ready for quick action. Having my shutter speed high (~1200-2000) allows for me to yank the camera up and fire off a series of shots while the bird is in view. However, a great deal of skill is also needed for shooting some birds that are particularly swift (such as swallows or shorebirds in flight). This simply requires lots of practice focusing in on a bird and anticipating where it's going to go next.

Although it's a difficult feat, the most exciting type of photography for me is birds in flight, particularly warblers: minute little migrating birds that fly very fast. Oftentimes right after sunrise any time in the fall, soft high-pitched calls can be heard from high overhead as warblers in active migration fly down from high altitudes to forage in trees for the daytime. It's already extremely hard to pick out the little dots against the early morning sky, but focusing on them is even more frustrating, and I always end up with many blurry shots. However, with lots of practice I'm usually able to walk away with some sharp photos of warblers in mid-flight. Although shooting warblers almost never produces many high-quality shots, it is quite fun and a good photography challenge.

I have been birding/photographing birds for over 5 years now across Florida and the country. Additionally, I volunteer routinely at the Brevard Zoo and lead guided birding tours for Orange Audubon Society and the Florida Young Birders Club.

What are some of the most memorable moments you've experienced while photographing birds? My favorite birding and photography experience from Viera last year was looking for migrant birds just after hurricane Milton at some local parks. The heavy rain and wind forces migrating birds to gather in the calm eye of the storm and wait for a good time to land on the ground. Suseda Park is a small island of habitat amongst numerous neighborhoods, so it acts as a good magnet for desperate birds. I saw numerous warblers and several tanagers, flycatchers, and thrushes in just an hour of birding. The light spittle of rain made for some unique shots as well, as seen below.

What role does patience play in bird photography, and how do you manage long waits for the perfect shot? Birding and photography share a similar demand from those who partake in them: patience. Waiting for just the right moment is crucial, oftentimes if I'm staking out a particular spot. However, much of the time, I look for birds by going along slowly and methodically to see every species in a small area. This
