Lola submitted by Pat Meek. After a year as a VHS shelter dog, Lola found her forever home in Canada. She loved every season, from swimming in the summer to making snow angels in the winter! Lola earned her place as a St. John’s Ambulance certified therapy dog, visiting seniors with dementia every week until crossing the rainbow bridge.

Hachi submitted by Matthew Reininger and Alysa Thornley
Hello my name is Hachi! I’m a Sato born on Vieques. I was born with medical challenges, including a heart condition that makes my heart enlarged. But I don’t mind, my bigger heart means I can give and receive more love! Read more about me in the “Dear Friends” letter.

Tangi submitted by Kathy Gannett Imagine...a tiny kitten left alone on the road. Blessings to the friend who brought him to VHS and to his adopter who found LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT! Tangi paid it forward. He adopted a street-kitty brother for himself, creating a happy family of three!

Sophie submitted by Amanda Limongi. Sophie was rescued by VHS and transported to our rescue partner in Florida, where she found her forever family. She’s smart, sweet, silly, and obsessed with peanut butter. She howls at sirens, and her lifelong dream is to chase a squirrel and catch it!

Didi submitted by Jerri Parks. Didi found her forever family in 2017. She’s a princess who deserved all the spoiling she gets. She loves sausage and her own pillows, but she will also take yours if you have any - sausage or pillows. She is our soul dog.

Rico submitted by Mary Kay Lee.
Rico showed up and adopted us! When it was time to leave Vieques, leaving Rico was not an option. VHS helped us with all his travel needs. Now he’s living his best life in Wisconsin.

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day
Fanny submitted by Mary Anne Mather. Fanny was a VERY shy special-needs dog who spent 5 years at VHS. Understanding social workers heard about her and knew they HAD to help. Through gentle coaxoing. Fanny overcame her fear and knew real love with her people and 3 family dogs. We honor her transformation by featuring her on our calendar.

Dear Friends of Vieques Humane Society—
Hachi is our 2026 calendar-cover pin-up. Why? Because his small (but important) story embraces our BIG story at the heart of VHS as an essential resource on a small island. The secret ingredient to both success stories is people who care and take action —people like you.
Htchi was discovered abandoned and alone in a private yard—a very tiny, very young, very sickly-looking puppy with a severe and concerning head tilt. So many people cared and took action to save this helpless boy…
• The property owners brought him to VHS.

• Our vet detected a heart murmur, requiring CT scans and cardiac diagnostics not available on our small island.

• A VHS sta member took him home each night to provide round-the-clock monitoring.

• Two small-business owners brought him to the main island for diagnostics, at their own expense. Then they volunteered to become his forever family!

So many people cared and took action: the property owners, VHS sta , fosters, and his adopters. The result: another innocent life saved!
Hachi’s adopters are obsessed with him. And VHS is obsessed with all supporters who nominate their pets in the calendar contest, purchase calendars, donate, volunteer, foster, and adopt. This array of dedicated generosity creates happy endings on our small island—just like Hachi!
Thank you on behalf of the animals we have served and those yet to arrive.
Sincerely,
Board Members & Leaders of Vieques Humane Society
