ABOUT ME

Hello,

I’m Victoria Castillo, an aspiring Interior Designer with a foundation in technical theater design and costuming, where I curated my skills in creativity and attention to detail. My experiences with companies such as The Walt Disney Company and William-Sonoma have supported me in understanding immersion, and forming my life goal of transforming spaces into functional, aesthetic environments that create that feeling of wonder and whimsy.

I believe that design is about caring for the human mind and our emotions, as what we create has a profound effect on how we feel and behave. This drives me into creating spaces that provide feelings of warmth and thoughtfulness, but also functionality that fits every client’ s desires.

Thank you for joining me on my journey of creation !

filipino residence

DESIGN BRIEF

"Design a residential space based on your own culture."

The intention of this space was to create a home based around Filipino culture. The island of the Philippines is surrounded by an abundance of natural materials, a wide variety of color, and vegetation. The Filipino culture is all about community, family, and large gatherings.

DESIGN CONCEPT

For this design I wanted to embrace Filipino architecture and textiles. The windows are inspired "Capiz," a window they make out of seashells. It incorporates woodworking, showcased as wall art, arm chairs, mullions and wood paneling in the bedroom. On the armchairs and bathroom wall, there are traditional Filipino weaving textiles. Most of the colors are warm tones of green, blue, creams, and woods to replicate the warmth of Philippines weather.

DESIGN CONCEPT

This luminaire is to be used for both task lighting and decorative. The luminaire will began as a bud, but when someone walks near it, it will create a "blooming" affect by having it's petal move up towards the sky.

The color LED provides a 2700K white light that could be used for task lighting when eating, or reading. It also has the option to change color to create a focal point in the room, and even creates a whimsical affect.

Software: Sketchup, Sewing

INITIAL SKETCHES

These sketches came with the idea that I wanted to do something biophilic. Was I going to create layers? Asymmetrical? Task or decorative? CONCEPT

Construction

I began by sewing two fabrics together in a shape a petal, then I used the craft wire to stick inside those petals. I then attached the petal and wire combination to a 4" wide embroidery hoop and then stacked those embroidery hoop/fabric combination. I staggered them and it creates that floral look. I then attach a gold chain and iridescent gem to the bottom embroidery hoop to create a decorative stamen. I then create the luminaire by adding a color LED in the middle.
