Sustainable Material Grammar in Cultural Curating
Field Research on German Exhibition Spaces and
Narrative Space Prototyping
SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL GRAMMAR IN CULTURAL CURATING
FIELD RESEARCH ON GERMAN EXHIBITION SPACES AND NARRATIVE SPACE PROTOTYPING
Through the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative, I wrote a field research plan for Germany, Weimar, and Leipzig. The project investigates how sustainable materials can function not only as technical or decorative elements, but also as part of a curatorial landscape, shaping the spatial narrative and visitor experience.

FIELD RESEARCH ON GERMAN EXHIBITION SPACES AND NARRATIVE SPACE PROTOTYPING
The research focuses on three questions:
How can recycled materials be designed as narrative devices in contemporary exhibitions, rather than being used only for function or symbolic “green” representation?
How do materials interact with circulation, visitor participation, and site context in exhibition design?
Can these observations be translated into a material-based spatial narrative framework applicable to Taiwanese cultural contexts?

FIELD RESEARCH ON GERMAN EXHIBITION SPACES AND NARRATIVE SPACE PROTOTYPING
Rather than documenting sites only as visual references, I used fieldwork as a method to analyze material decisions, spatial sequencing, and visitor experience in relation to curatorial intent.

Methods
On-site observation
Photo/video documentation
Spatial mapping
Narrative sequencing analysis
Interviews (if applicable)
Daily reflection notes

Post-Fieldwork Translation & Contribution:
Comprehensive Museum Observation Report:
I compiled a report summarizing key observations from museums and exhibition spaces in Germany as a reusable reference for later research and design work.
Short Summary Video for Rapid Understanding:
I produced a short summary video to translate the fieldwork findings into a clear and shareable visual format.
Campus Lecture and Media Coverage:
I gave a public sharing lecture at my university and received media coverage, extending the project’s educational and public impact.
