A Taste of Home in Chatham
Sunil Kumar, owner of Sonny’s Indian Kitchen in Chatham, understands how a single dish can evoke powerful memories. For many guests, his famous butter chicken does exactly that, bringing a sense of nostalgia and comfort.
Kumar’s menu reflects the remarkable diversity of Indian cuisine, featuring dishes inspired by regions across the country rather than just familiar staples. Because India’s culinary traditions vary widely, he takes pride in researching and preparing authentic flavors that reconnect diners with foods they grew up and introducing others to regional specialties they may be tasting for the first time.
Finding New Life for Old Furniture in Madison
Michelle Richards of Madison has a knack for seeing potential where others see worn out furniture. Through her venture ReFIND DESIGN, she refinishes vintage pieces, restoring their natural beauty and giving them a second life.
What began during the pandemic as a hobby, refinishing her own and family pieces, quickly grew into a side hustle as neighbors began asking for help with items.
Photos of loyal customers line the restaurant’s walls, a tribute to the diners who return often for their favorite dishes and the warm hospitality that has become part of the experience.

Richards especially loves working with vintage furnituresanding, staining, and waxing pieces so the original wood can shine through.
Besides tackling client requests, she finds many projects at estate and garage sales, online marketplaces, or even by the curb. To Richards, rescuing and restoring wellmade furniture is both practical and meaningful.
“These pieces were built to last,” she says. “They just need a little care.”

More Than Cookies for Madison Resident
For Jennifer Pressman of Madison, Girl Scout cookie season is about much more than Thin Mints and Samoas. As Service Unit Cookie Manager for the Madison-Harding Girl Scouts, she oversees the complex logistics behind the local program, helping coordinate cookie sales for about 25 troops and 280 girls.
Each year, roughly 1,400 cases—about 16,800 boxes—pass through her hands as she organizes distribution, supports troop leaders, and runs a cookie rally that helps girls set goals and prepare for the season.
Jennifer has been a Girl Scout herself for 38 years and still remembers the excitement of selling cookies as a child. Now she enjoys watching the next generation grow, which includes her children.
Through the cookie program, she says, girls build confidence, learn leadership and money management, and discover the power of teamwork.

Millburn Author Releases Second Novel
Millburn resident Dur e Aziz Amna will release her second novel, A Splintering (Dzanc Books), in the United States on April 14.
Set in late-1990s Pakistan, the story follows a young woman who leaves her rural hometown for the capital city, determined to become wealthy and willing to push past moral boundaries to achieve it. Blending literary fiction with elements of psychological suspense, A Splintering is the story of political and individual upheaval, tracing the class struggle of a woman stuck between province and metropolis, between motherhood and ambition.
Amna is also the author of the award-winning debut novel American Fever (Arcade), which received the 2023 South Asian Book Award and the APALA Award for Literature. A Splintering was selected as a BBC book club pick following its U.K. release. Both are available wherever books are sold. For information, visit: dureazizamna.com.

Set in Leadville, Colorado, the book follows Boomer as he proudly takes on what he sees as his responsibility to help and protect his owner and best friend. Through Boomer’s eyes, everyday moments become part of his mission as a hardworking dog, adding humor and heart to the story.
Frommer is the author of several other books, including the Tailgunner trilogy, the cookbook Annie Cooks, and the holiday story Christmas in Her Heart
Olympians Inspire Students in South Orange and Maplewood
Students in South Orange and Maplewood recently had the opportunity to learn from Olympic athletes during two RunJumpThrow events sponsored by USA Track and Field as part of “Hazel Clark Day.”
Held at South Mountain Elementary School in the morning and Maplewood Middle School in the afternoon, the programs welcomed Olympians Hazel Clark, DeeDee Trotter, and Sharrieffa Barksdale. District leaders opened the events before Clark, a three-time U.S. Olympian in the 800 meters who grew up
in South Orange and attended Columbia High School, shared her journey of perseverance, discipline, and developing a performance mindset.
Students then joined the Olympians for interactive activities focused on running, jumping, and throwing, building fundamental skills through fun, noncompetitive exercises.

A Boutique With a Bigger Purpose
IThe Love You Girl Foundation Boutique, Events and More in South Orange is much more than a boutique. Filled with new and gently used clothing generously donated by supporters and community members, the welcoming space invites people to shop, gather, and give back. But its true purpose reaches far beyond fashion.
The boutique is an extension of the Love You Girl Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Betty Neal after the tragic loss of her best friend, Alice M. Jenkins, who was killed by her husband after enduring domestic violence. Before her death, Jenkins had confided in Neal about what she was experiencing, opening Neal’s eyes to the realities of abuse and the many misconceptions that surround it. In the wake of that loss, Neal turned grief into action, building an organization focused on education, awareness, and support.
Today, that mission lives inside the South Orange space at 76 South Orange Avenue, South Orange, NJ, where every purchase helps fund the foundation’s work. After expenses, proceeds from the boutique support programs that educate the public about domestic violence, assist shelters and community organizations, and help women and children affected by abuse.
The boutique also provides direct support. Women referred by agencies can receive clothing for job interviews, work, and other essential needs at no cost. If the right item is not in stock, Neal and her team work to get it. It is one more way the foundation helps women move forward with dignity and confidence.
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
The space itself is designed to serve the community in multiple ways. In addition to shopping, it hosts fundraisers, trainings, self-care gatherings, and small events. There is even a relaxation lounge where visitors can step away from the stress of the day, sit quietly, and recharge.
That mix of warmth and purpose is what makes the boutique stand out. It is a place where style meets service, and where a storefront becomes a vehicle for healing.
Betty Neal has created more than a shop. She has created a mission-driven space where compassion is put into action every day, and where one woman’s loss has been transformed into hope for others.
For more information, visit: loveyougirl.org.
Love You Girl Foundation co-founders Betty Neal and Mattie Crowley accept a donation from the organizers of Praise and Laughter in December, supporting the organization’s mission to uplift and serve the community.
Betty Neal, co-founder of the Love You Girl Foundation, receives a community service award from the East Orange Senior Volunteer Corporation, recognizing her dedication to serving and uplifting the community.
Cherished Creations is Turning Wishes into Moments That Matter
BY JACKIE SCHATELL
IIn Berkeley Heights, a nonprofit is quietly creating extraordinary moments for families facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.
Founded in 1997 by David and Angela Grande, Cherished Creations was built on a simple but powerful belief: when a child is seriously ill, moments of joy can matter just as much as medicine. The organization grants wishes for children from birth through age 21 across the United States, helping families find light during incredibly hard times.
Today, Cherished Creations fulfills roughly 100 wishes each year. Some are unforgettable experiences such as trips to Disney or tickets to a favorite concert. Others are deeply practical, including specialized wheelchairs, adaptive bikes, or medical equipment that insurance will not cover. Many children also request musical instruments, gaming systems, or computers to help pass the time during treatment or stay connected to school while homebound.
“What we tell the kids is simple,” says Executive Director Suzanne Grande. “If you can wish it, we will do everything we can to figure out how to make it happen.”
Unlike many wish-granting organizations, Cherished Creations supports children with serious illnesses even if they are not terminal. The nonprofit also helps young adults up to age 21 and, in some cases, grants second wishes, ensuring families continue to receive support when they need it most.
A unique model allows nearly every dollar donated to go directly toward fulfilling wishes. The Grande family’s company, Vitusa Products, covers administrative and fundraising expenses, meaning ticket sales, donations, and event proceeds directly benefit the children.
Community support plays a major role in sustaining the mission. Each year, the organization hosts fundraising events including a wine and spirits tasting and a golf outing. In Berkeley Heights, fourth graders have raised more than $160,000 through an annual walk-a-thon over the past 25 years. Longtime supporter Dave Wagner of Adelphia Wine Market in Bernardsville also helps sustain the wine tasting fundraiser by coordinating donated vendors and samples.
For the team behind Cherished Creations, the most meaningful moments come when families share photos and videos of their children experiencing their wishes.
In those smiles, the impact is unmistakable.
To learn more, apply for a wish, or support the mission, visit cherishedcreations.org.

Exhibits for the 250th Anniversary of America at METC
TThe Museum of Early Trades & Crafts in Madison is marking the nation’s 250th anniversary with two new exhibits exploring the history, ideas, and people connected to the American Revolution. Through historical artifacts, interactive displays, and contemporary student artwork, the exhibits invite visitors to reflect on the meaning of freedom and the events that shaped the birth of the United States.
The American Experience — The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts and the Morristown Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution present the American Revolution Experience, a traveling pop-up exhibition developed in collaboration with the American Battlefield Trust and the Daughters of the American Revolution. The exhibit features display panels and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling, illustration, technology, and primary accounts to connect modern audiences with the people and places that shaped the birth of the nation.
A special guided tour and lecture will take place Tuesday, April 28 at 7pm, led by Carrie Efinger, First Vice Regent of the Morristown Chapter, NSDAR, who will discuss the founding of the DAR, the local Morristown chapter, and its ties to the American Revolution. On display April 26–May 9, 2026 in the Main Gallery.
We the People — The Revolutionary War united many people around the cause of freedom, though not everyone agreed on what that freedom meant. Beyond the Numbers: Financial Planning Built on Trust and Relationships
FFor Egan Wealth Advisors in Madison, financial planning is about guiding people through life’s most important moments with clarity, strategy, and trust.
Senior Wealth Advisor Patrick J. McCahill Jr., CFP®, is part of the practice’s next generation of leadership, continuing a legacy that began more than 30 years ago. Today, the team serves families, business owners, retirees, and young professionals with a comprehensive, relationshipdriven approach.
“We’re not just investment managers,” McCahill says. “We’re looking at the full picture including retirement planning, estate planning, taxes, and insurance, and building a plan tailored to each client’s goals.”
All advisors hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® designation and operate as fiduciaries, meaning every recommendation is made in the client’s best interest. The result is a more integrated, thoughtful experience.
While many advisors focus primarily on investments, Egan Wealth Advisors takes a broader approach, helping clients navigate both expected milestones and unexpected life events. Clients often reach out during times of transition such as the
loss of a loved one, a career shift, preparing for retirement, or planning for children’s education, but just as often, they come simply seeking structure and professional management.
“There’s never a wrong time to start,” McCahill says. “It begins with understanding where you are today and where you want to go.”
One of the biggest surprises clients encounter is the cost of healthcare in retirement, an often overlooked factor that can significantly impact longterm financial security.
At its core, the practice is built on relationships. Advisors meet with clients regularly, often working with families across generations. The goal is not short-term transactions, but long-term partnership.
For McCahill, the most rewarding part of the work is simple.
“It’s about helping someone reach a goal they’ve been working toward for years,” he says. “Being part of that journey, that is what matters most.”

Dr. Meeta Grewal
A Dental Home, Not Just a Dentist
Dr. Meeta Grewal is reshaping pediatric dentistry in Livingston
BY JACKIE SCHATELL, PHOTOS BY DAN EPSTEIN
FFOR MANY CHILDREN, VISITING THE DENTIST CAN SPARK ANXIETY OR FEAR. BUT STEP INTO CANOE BROOK DENTISTRY IN LIVINGSTON, AND YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING DIFFERENT: A WARM, LIVINGROOM-LIKE SPACE WHERE COMFORT, TRUST, AND PREVENTION COME FIRST. AT THE HEART OF IT ALL IS DR. MEETA GREWAL, A BOARD-CERTIFIED PEDIATRIC DENTIST WITH 17 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, WHOSE MISSION IS SIMPLE YET PROFOUND: TO MAKE EVERY VISIT FEEL LESS INTIMIDATING AND MORE LIKE HOME.
My practice is my dream, and teaching is my purpose. Together they make me a better doctor and mentor.
Dr. Grewal’s path began at New York University’s College of Dentistry, where she graduated in the top 10 percent of her class. She launched her career as a general dentist, but her perspective shifted after a high-risk pregnancy with her son. The experience deepened her love for working with children and inspired her to return to school for a two-year specialty in pediatric dentistry. “I liked being a dentist, but I fell in love with being a pediatric dentist,” she says. Today she holds licenses in NJ and NY, is affiliated with leading dental organizations, and serves as associate program director at NYU Langone’s pediatric residency program.
She says, “My practice is my dream, and teaching is my purpose. Together they make me a better doctor and mentor.”
After more than a decade with prestigious practices in VA, NJ, and NY, Dr. Grewal opened Canoe Brook Dentistry in Livingston a year ago. Now raising her 14-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter in the local community, she designed the boutique-style practice to support every stage of a child’s growth, from six months through college. Services range from routine exams to advanced treatments such as digital X-rays, laser dentistry, crowns, and extractions.
– DR. GREWAL
Preventive care is always at the forefront, with options like sports mouth guards and desensitization programs for anxious or special-needs patients. By blending modern technology with a gentle, personalized approach, she ensures that children receive comprehensive care in a stress-free environment. “Dentistry for kids is really about prevention and coping skills,” she explains. “We are not just filling cavities; we are teaching habits that last a lifetime.”
Her team also works closely with speech therapists and lactation consultants to address challenges related to speech and breastfeeding, further reflecting her whole-child approach. Rather than defaulting to sedation, Dr. Grewal prioritizes trust and patience, often succeeding where others could not.
Her philosophy extends to parents as well. She sees her role as a partner in their parenting journey, offering trusted advice and multiple options rather than one-size-fits-all directives. This personal touch has kept families with her for over a decade, many following her from her previous office. Some of her earliest

patients are now in college, and one even volunteers at her office. “It’s come full circle,” she says with a smile. “Watching these children grow up has been one of the greatest joys of my career.”
Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Grewal has dedicated herself to giving back both globally in Tanzania and locally, where she sponsors local sports teams and participates in cultural and community events.
For Dr. Grewal, dentistry is not just a profession. It’s a calling. Her vision
extends beyond fixing teeth to shaping healthy habits, strong relationships, and confident smiles that last a lifetime. At its core, her work is about trust, relationships, and the lifelong confidence that comes from a child who is not afraid to open their mouth and their heart in the dentist’s chair.

Friendships That Stick
The
Social Benefits of Summer Camp
TThere’s something uniquely powerful about the friendships formed at summer camp. Removed from the pressures of school, social labels, and daily routines, children are free to connect in more authentic and meaningful ways. Camp creates an environment where shared experiences—whether it’s learning a new skill, tackling a challenge, or simply laughing around a campfire—become the foundation for lasting bonds.
Unlike the structured social settings of school, camp encourages organic interaction. Kids meet peers from different towns, backgrounds, and perspectives, helping them build stronger communication skills and a broader sense of empathy. Without the distractions of screens, they engage face-to-face, learning how to navigate conversations, resolve conflicts, and collaborate as part of a team.
These connections often deepen quickly. Spending full days together fosters a sense of belonging that can be harder to achieve during the school year. Campers learn to support one another, celebrate successes, and build trust—key components of healthy relationships.
For many children, these friendships extend far beyond the summer months. Letters, texts, and reunions keep those connections alive, reinforcing the idea that meaningful relationships can be formed anywhere.
In a world where social interactions are increasingly digital, summer camp offers something refreshingly real: the opportunity to build friendships that are genuine, supportive, and lasting.
Give the gift of clay to your child to explore their inner creativity. Future Antiques’ summer camps run in the morning (9am-12noon) and afternoon (1-4pm) from Mon-Fri. The camps are found on www.futureantiques.studio under kid workshops and classes. We will be hand building and wheel throwing our way to some fantastic creations. Be sure to pack snacks and a water bottle. Glazing will take place a few weeks after camps end.

Wrapped in Walnut Kitchen Renovation
PHOTOGRAPHS BY – JULIA D’AGOSTINO; CONTRACTOR – HOFFMANN DESIGN BUILD
NNestled within a charming New Providence home, this kitchen renovation invites you to experience the warmth of natural materials and the artistry of tailored craftsmanship. The space centers around expertly crafted cabinetry by Plain & Fancy Custom Cabinetry, blending the rich, organic grain of walnut with deep gray painted finishes. This harmonious pairing creates a palette that is both inviting and refined, while the interplay of textures adds a dynamic visual appeal and enduring elegance.
Every element of the kitchen was carefully considered to enhance both form and function. Clean lines, purposeful storage solutions, and well-planned workspaces ensure that the kitchen performs as beautifully as it looks. The walnut cabinetry brings warmth and texture to the room, while the dark gray accents ground the design and provide a modern edge without overpowering the space.
Thoughtful touches— like custom hardware, seamless cabinetry, and perfectly balanced proportions—elevate the kitchen to a haven of understated luxury. The result is a welcoming, highly functional space that invites gathering, conversation, and everyday enjoyment.
This renovation embodies Robinwood Kitchen’s philosophy: that exceptional New Jersey kitchens are born from a blend of fine craftsmanship, inspired planning, and premium materials. The result is a kitchen not only beautiful for today but destined to inspire for years to come.

Hanging Egg Chairs
A Stylish and Functional Outdoor Favorite
HHanging egg chairs are popular in patios, porches, and indoor spaces for their unique blend of comfort, style, and versatility. One of the biggest benefits of a hanging egg chair is comfort. The gently curved, cocoon-like design supports the body and creates a sense of privacy. Many chairs come with plush cushions that cradle the back and legs. This makes them ideal for reading, napping, or simply unwinding. The subtle swaying motion adds a calming effect that helps reduce stress and promote relaxation.
Functionality is another major advantage that sets hanging egg chairs apart from traditional seating. Their flexible installation—suspended from a sturdy stand or securely mounted to a ceiling beam—means they fit spaces that standard chairs cannot. These chairs are
just as at home outdoors—on decks, patios, and under pergolas—as indoors in sunrooms, bedrooms, or cozy corners. Additionally, many models feature weatherresistant materials, such as powder-coated steel frames and synthetic wicker, which help them withstand changing climates and make them a long-lasting investment.
Hanging egg chairs act as focal points in design. Their sculptural shape adds dimension and are space-efficient without overwhelming the space. Their suspended design frees up floor space while still offering ample seating. Whether as a quiet retreat or a social piece, they unite these benefits in one inviting design.
FFor more than 20 years, Expert Chimney & Roofing has been helping New Jersey homeowners protect and maintain one of their most important investments: their homes. The family owned company was founded by a dedicated father and is now proudly run by his sons, continuing a tradition of quality workmanship, reliability, and customer care.
Expert Chimney & Roofing offers a wide range of services designed to keep homes safe, functional, and looking their best. Their roofing work includes repairs, maintenance, new roof installations, and detailed inspections to identify issues before they become costly problems. The company also specializes in chimney cleaning, repairs, restoration, new chimney construction, and safety inspections to ensure proper ventilation and reduce fire hazards.
In addition, the team provides masonry and exterior home improvement services such as brick and stone installations, steps and walkways, decks and porches, stone veneers, siding, and skylight installation and repair. Each project is completed with a strong focus on durability, safety, and craftsmanship.
According to owner Toni Iseberi, customers say they appreciate the company’s professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail. The team prides itself on clear communication, dependable service, and standing behind its work with warranties. They also offer 24-hour availability for urgent repairs and emergencies.
Weather in the region can take a toll on homes. Long winters, heavy rain, and seasonal temperature changes often contribute to aging roofs, damaged shingles, and deteriorating chimney bricks. Tony says, “Homeowners should watch for warning signs such as missing shingles, cracked masonry, or moss buildup on the chimney”
Since many structural issues are not easily visible from the ground, regular inspections are important. While chimney and roof work can be done year round, Toni recommends calling a professional as soon as a concern appears. Early inspections can prevent minor issues from becoming major repairs.
Expert Chimney & Roofing offers free inspections and estimates and is fully licensed and insured, giving homeowners peace of mind that their homes are in experienced hands.

The Art of the Glow
Why Professional Expertise Matters in New Jersey Landscape Lighting
AAs the sun sets over the Garden State, the true potential of a home’s exterior is often left in the shadows. For New Jersey homeowners, landscape lighting is no longer just about visibility; it is an investment in security, lifestyle, and architectural beauty. However, achieving a “wow” factor that lasts requires more than just high-quality fixtures—it demands a level of professional mastery found only at the intersection of certified design and licensed technical skill.
When considering a transformation for your property, here are five essential pillars of a professional lighting project.
1. Award-Winning Design Expertise
A truly exceptional lighting system is an art form. Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting of North Jersey has set the gold standard in the region, known for their award-winning projects that treat light as a creative medium. For instance, their «Morristown Estate» project was recognized with a prestigious Award of Merit from the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP). Choosing a firm with a portfolio of nationally recognized work ensures your home’s architectural features, from grand facades to delicate garden textures, are highlighted with a sophisticated touch that DIY solutions simply cannot replicate.
2. The Value of Certified Professionals
Not all installers are created equal. Working with a Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD) and a Certified Landscape Lighting Technician (CLLT) is vital for long-term success.
Designers (COLD) focus on the “emotional” impact and artistic placement, ensuring the system enhances the property’s natural beauty while adhering to advanced lighting principles.
Technicians (CLLT) are rigorously trained in the technical precision of installation, voltage management, and system maintenance, guaranteeing your investment performs as beautifully on year ten as it does on day one.
3. Legal Compliance: The NJ Electrical License Requirement
In the state of New Jersey, safety and legality go hand-in-hand. It is a legal requirement for professionals to hold a New Jersey Electrical License to install low-voltage landscape lighting systems exceeding 10 volts. While some may view low-voltage work as a minor task, the NJ Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors strictly mandates that this work be performed by a licensed contractor to ensure all installations meet the Uniform Construction Code (UCC). Hiring a licensed professional protects you from potential liability, code violations, and safety hazards.
4. Precision Engineering for Safety and Security
Beyond aesthetics, professional lighting is a critical safety feature. Strategically placed lights eliminate dark corners that could hide intruders and illuminate potential trip hazards like steps or uneven walkways. A certified designer understands how to balance these functional needs with glare-free illumination, providing a secure environment without creating “crime-scene” floodlighting.
5. Seamless Smart Integration
Modern luxury living in 2026 relies on integration. Professional systems now offer seamless smartphone control, allowing homeowners to manage lighting “scenes” for entertaining or security at the touch of a button. These smart systems are designed to be energyefficient and durable, using architectural-grade LED technology that offers a much longer lifespan and better color quality than retail-grade alternatives.
Illuminating your New Jersey home is an opportunity to extend your living space and celebrate your property’s unique character. By partnering with a licensed, certified, and award-winning team like Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting of North Jersey, you ensure that your home doesn’t just have lights—it has a masterpiece.

Allergy Season Survival
Staying Well Through Spring Triggers
A
As spring arrives in full bloom, so does allergy season— bringing sneezing, congestion, and fatigue along with it. For many, these symptoms go beyond simple discomfort, affecting sleep quality, energy levels, and overall wellness. Understanding how to manage seasonal allergies can make a meaningful difference in how you feel day to day.
Pollen is the primary culprit in spring, and it can easily find its way indoors, settling on clothing, hair, and surfaces. One of the simplest ways to reduce exposure is by changing clothes and washing up after spending time outside. Keeping windows closed during high pollen days and using air purifiers can also help maintain cleaner indoor air.
Your daily habits play a role as well. Staying hydrated helps thin mucus and ease congestion, while a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables may support your immune system. Some people find relief with local honey or saline nasal rinses, though results can vary.
It’s also important to recognize when symptoms are more than just a nuisance. Persistent congestion, sinus pressure, or disrupted sleep may signal the need for medical guidance. Over-the-counter antihistamines or prescribed treatments can provide effective relief when used appropriately.
Spring should be a season to enjoy—not endure. With a few proactive steps, you can minimize allergy symptoms and stay energized, focused, and well throughout the season.

A Daily Strategies for Living with Parkinson’s
A diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease can feel overwhelming, but with the right daily strategies, individuals can maintain independence and a strong quality of life. Thoughtful lifestyle choices play a powerful role in managing symptoms and supporting overall well-being.
Regular exercise is one of the most effective tools. Activities such as walking, stretching, yoga, and strength training can improve balance, flexibility, and mobility while also boosting mood. Even small amounts of consistent movement can make a meaningful difference.
Nutrition is equally important. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps support brain and body health.
Staying hydrated and timing meals appropriately—especially when taking medication—can also enhance effectiveness and reduce side effects.
Managing stress is another key component. Mindfulness practices, deep breathing, or simply setting aside time for relaxing hobbies can help ease anxiety and improve mental clarity. Social connection also matters; support groups, family involvement, and community engagement can reduce feelings of isolation.
April, recognized as Parkinson’s Awareness Month, serves as an important reminder to educate, support, and advocate for those affected by the disease.

II’ve addressed the topic of fear many times over the years, but if there’s one person, I would turn to for insight on how to embrace it—and ultimately use it to your advantage—it would be my good friend and mentor, Dr. Mark McLaughlin.
Dr. Mark R. McLaughlin is a neurosurgeon, author, youth coach, and philanthropist dedicated to neutralizing the paralyzing impact of fear in our society. He’s the author of Cognitive Dominance: A Brain Surgeon’s Quest to Outthink Fear
Barry Farber: What are some of the situations you’ve dealt with over the years when operating under life-and-death circumstances?
Dr. Mark McLaughlin: When I speak to my students or cadets at West Point—or anyone about performance enhancement—I emphasize that it’s a process. You’re not going to come out of the gates completely fearless. You have to give yourself a break. It’s taken me over 20 years to approach surgery the way I do today. You need rules, routines, and rituals. In neurosurgery, we have principles like don’t cut what you can’t see, always leave a drain, never worry about a patient alone, and if you’re struggling, get more exposure. These are technical rules, but they’re also powerful allegories for life.
Take “don’t cut what you can’t see.” Before I make any incision, I need to understand everything between those two blades. It’s the same with decision-making. Interestingly, the word decision comes from the Latin word “to cut.” Every decision requires as much clarity and information as possible. Don’t act unless you can truly see what’s in front of you.
Barry Farber: I agree—but there are times when you can’t possibly have all the information. I see people in business stuck in endless meetings, never making a decision. At what point do you take action?
Dr. Mark McLaughlin: Absolutely—life throws curveballs, both in the operating room and beyond. That’s why you fall back on fundamentals. Be yourself. Don’t worry about what others think of your decisions. Anchor yourself in your core principles. When I face a tough decision, I remind myself: I’m a servant. That’s my purpose. So, I ask: How can I serve in this moment? Will this help? Will it ease suffering? Will it improve the situation? I strive to be useful. The second key is presence. You cannot operate— literally or figuratively—while worrying about the future. You must focus entirely on what needs to be done next… right now.
Barry Farber: William Danforth, founder of Ralston Purina, wrote in I Dare You: “Be your own self, at your very best, all the time.” That’s difficult for many people who feel the need to adapt or seek approval. What does “be yourself” really mean?
Dr. Mark McLaughlin: I love that book. Life is a series of interruptions. You have a plan—and then something disrupts it. That interruption often creates anxiety because it introduces the unknown. We think it’s getting in the way of where we need to go. In those moments, you have to fall back on who you are.
Let me share a personal story. I was preparing for a difficult surgery at the end of a long day. I was exhausted. The procedure had already been delayed, and I had just received troubling news—my father was seriously ill. I questioned whether I was in the right state of mind to proceed.
I decided I needed to postpone the surgery. As I walked toward the patient’s room to tell him, something shifted. I thought about my father—who had just been diagnosed with cancer—and how much I wanted to be with him. I asked myself: What would my father want me to do right now? The answer was clear— he would want me to take care of the person in front of me.
So, I made a decision. I would dedicate the surgery to my father. Instead of retreating, I would turn the moment into something meaningful… a tribute to him. The surgery went incredibly well. Later, I told my father what I had done, and it became one of the greatest gifts I could give him. What I realized in that moment is this: fear lives in the future. It doesn’t exist in the present. By shifting my focus… by grounding myself in purpose and love— I dismantled that fear. I removed it entirely.
And something powerful happened. I felt more love … for my father, for my patient, and for my work. That’s why fear is the enemy of performance. It is the opposite of love. It prevents us from fully engaging—not just with people, but with what we do.
And when you truly love what you do… you become unstoppable.
Barry Farber: I love that.
