Contest Turns Art Into Winter Food for Wildlife

Creativity and care for wildlife were on display at the Essex County Environmental Center during the annual Forest Friends Feeder Contest, where residents designed edible feeders for wetland animals. Participants were challenged to design festive wildlife feeders that were both creative and edible for animals. The finished entries were displayed outdoors throughout December, offering visitors a fun and educational look at how art can support local wildlife.

County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. honored winners across several age groups. Andrew Fernandez of West Orange received the People’s Choice Award. Young artists from Livingston, Parsippany, and West Orange earned top honors in the Pre-K through fifth grade divisions. Students from Essex Junior Academy in Fairfield were also recognized for their entries. In the middle school category, winning teams came from Liberty Middle School in West Orange. The professional division featured entries created by students from the Essex County West Caldwell School of Technology.

A Daughter’s Gift of Time

April is National Donate Life Month

For Caldwell realtor Jennifer Szwecyk, donating a kidney to her father was the natural thing to do. But the story behind the transplant is anything but ordinary. Her father, Leon Szwecyk, received a heart transplant at Columbia Presbyterian in 1983, when the procedure was experimental and patients were expected to live only a few years. Remarkably, that heart lasted two decades. In 2003, he underwent a second heart and kidney transplant. More than 20 years later, when his kidney function began to fail again, Jennifer was tested and was a perfect match. Following surgery in October, both are recovering well. Today, Jennifer is back at work, while Leon remains active and grateful as the longest living heart transplant recipient in the U.S., and possibly the world, according to Jennifer.

National Donate Life Month is observed every April to raise awareness for organ, eye, and tissue donation, encouraging Americans to register as donors and honor those who have saved lives. Register at registerme.org, the DMV, or at donatelife.net.

West Essex Roboters Level Up in First LEGO League

Six fifth grade boys from Roseland and North Caldwell, Vincent K, Decker FC, Weston S, Kyle G, Jack D, Gabe C, are proving that innovation has no age limit. Competing as the West Essex Roboters, the team participated in multiple First LEGO League competitions this fall, earning strong results at both the regional and state levels.

At the regional qualifier, they scored 270 points in the robot competition and successfully presented their innovation project, “ArchaeBook: A Website to Connect Archeologists with Locals.” Their performance advanced them to the state competition, where they improved their best robot run to 280 points.

Beyond competition, the Roboters recently offered a custom demonstration for Roseland Free Public Library’s Makers Day and will showcase their work at the Menlo Park Mashup at the Menlo Park Mall on May 16.

Grass Gurus and Growing Goals

Oliver Super of Livingston is already thinking like an entrepreneur. A junior in high school, he launched his lawn mowing business, Grass Gurus, as a sophomore after getting his start shoveling snow and doing spring cleanups in his neighborhood. What began as seasonal work has grown into a steady clientele and a flexible operation.

When colder weather slows the mowing season, Super pivots. He offers clients snow removal and small engine repairs. By providing reliable service, he has built trust and long-term relationships within the community.

Focused on building his own financial independence, Super hopes to scale his business and pursue an entrepreneurial path in the future. He is also exploring ways to give back, including helping senior citizens in the community. He can be contacted at: 201-452-4348 or oliver.super123@icloud.com.

Finding Connection in the Chaos

West Orange resident Erin Rose Bloom knows motherhood, especially in a new community, can sometimes feel isolating. While looking for ways to connect with other parents and find easy, fun activities for her littles, she created Coffee and Chaos, a relaxed weekly meetup where parents can connect while their kids explore.

Open to anyone and hosted at Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston, the laidback social hour features sensory activities, crafts, and space for kids to explore while parents bond over coffee and conversation.

Bloom says, “It’s so important for moms to normalize the chaos and find their people. Just come as you are, grab a coffee, and let the kids explore while you enjoy a little community.” To stay up to date, follow @jstart_jplay on Instagram.

Connecting People and Possibilities

West Orange native CC Minton has built a reputation as a natural connector who thrives at the intersection of community, conversation, and opportunity. Known for bringing people together through networking and collaborative projects, Minton describes herself as a “conversationalist,” someone who believes meaningful dialogue can spark ideas, partnerships, and new ventures.

Her path has included nonprofit volunteer work in Essex County, helping residents and organizations connect resources and support. That same instinct for collaboration has carried into a wide range of initiatives, from facilitating local events to launching a podcast focused on relationships and storytelling for Harlem World Magazine, where Minton serves as president.

Neighbors Nourishing Neighbors and Nature

IIn Montclair and several neighboring towns, a quiet but powerful movement is growing, powered almost entirely by volunteers. Through the Northeast Earth Coalition (NEEC), founded by Montclair resident José German Gomez, residents are working together to protect the environment, support neighbors facing food insecurity, and build a more sustainable community one small action at a time.

Founded in 2016 by a team of longtime local volunteers, the NEEC now leads four major initiatives: environmental initiatives that include environment restoration projects, community outreach and environmental and sustainability education, community composting, and the Community Food Network.

One of the organization’s most visible efforts is its network of “The Free Little Pantries,” small outdoor food stations modeled after Little Free Libraries. Located outside churches, schools, and community spaces, the pantries operate on a simple philosophy: take what you need and donate what you can. In addition, volunteers deliver fresh organic food each week to about 300 low-income seniors in Montclair.

Today there are 18 locations across Montclair and neighboring towns including Bloomfield, Clifton, Cedar Grove, and East Orange. The program runs 24 hours a day and is maintained by more than 250 volunteers who monitor supplies, share updates, and help keep the pantries stocked. Last year alone, the network distributed more than 300,000 pounds of canned and dry food to neighbors facing food insecurity.

Environmental stewardship is another major focus. Volunteers have helped Montclair earn certification from the National Wildlife Federation as a wildlife habitat community by encouraging residents, houses of worship, parks, and local organizations to plant native species that support birds, butterflies, and pollinators. The group has also helped expand pollinator pathways, restore green spaces, and promote pesticide free gardening practices throughout the region.

The coalition also runs a community composting program, helping reduce waste while producing rich nutrient compost.

Despite operating without public funding, the NEEC continues to grow through small donations and a volunteer base that now exceeds 750 people each year.

Driven by unwavering dedication, Gomez has ignited a movement that inspires countless volunteers to join the cause, living up to the NEEC mantra of acting locally for a more sustainable world.

A demonstration garden at Crane Park showcases pollinators and native plants, highlighting the Northeast Earth Coalition’s efforts to promote sustainable landscaping and support local ecosystems.
A vibrant display of tomatoes, peppers, and other fresh produce highlights the Northeast Earth Coalition’s garden harvest, showcasing the bounty grown through sustainable, pollinator-friendly practices.
Volunteers Estefany Almonte, Amanda Regan, David Wasmuth, José German Gomez and Paul Najemian, gather at the community garden at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, supporting the Northeast Earth Coalition’s mission to foster sustainability, food access, and community connection.
Volunteers David Wasmuth, Amanda McCabe and Mary Hiers tend raised beds at the First Congregational Church garden, part of the Northeast Earth Coalition’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, community gardening, and local food access.

The Power of Yes: How Friendship Circle and LifeTown Are Changing Lives

More than two decades ago, Rabbi Zalman and Toba Grossbaum made a promise to families raising children with special needs: they would create a place where the answer would always be yes.

MAt the time, Toba was teaching special education and saw firsthand how isolating life could be for families navigating autism and other developmental differences. The couple was also deeply involved in Jewish educational programming throughout Essex County. When they learned that New Jersey had one of the highest concentrations of autism in the country and saw the impact of a Friendship Circle program started by friends in Michigan, they realized there was an opportunity to meet an important community need close to home.

They began with a simple idea. Teen volunteers would build friendships with children with special abilities through home visits, social programs, sports, and holiday activities, creating inclusive opportunities for families who often struggled to find them.

Since its founding in 2000, Friendship Circle has grown into a vibrant community network. More than 14,000 teen volunteers have participated over the years, with nearly 1,000 adult volunteers contributing their time annually. Many say the experience has shaped their lives, influencing careers in education, healthcare, and advocacy while deepening their understanding of inclusion and community.

As the organization expanded, so did its vision.

Pictured here from left are: Toba Grossbaum, Assemblywoman Rosie Bagolie, Senator John F McKeon, and Zalman Grossbaum.
Children enjoy the indoor zero-entry pool at LifeTown.
Volunteer Meghan Henderson engages visitors at the LifeTown Shoppes pet shop.

That vision led to the creation of LifeTown, a 53,000-square-foot inclusive center designed to help individuals with special needs build confidence, independence, and connection. At its heart is “Life Village,” a simulated indoor town where participants practice every day experiences such as shopping, banking, and social interaction. The center also includes recreation programs, arts activities, therapy spaces, and sports facilities that bring people of all abilities together.

About 15,000 students visit LifeTown each year, and more than 40,000 visitors pass through its doors annually.

The work continues to grow. The organization, which is open to all New Jersey communities, is now developing a new facility next door called the Soul Center, which will focus on job training, employment opportunities, and social programs for adults with special needs.

From its early days as a small volunteer effort in Livingston, the organization has grown into a powerful community force where thousands come together each year to learn, connect, and support one another — a place where friendship truly changes lives.

IF YOU’VE BEEN TOLD THERE’S NO REAL SOLUTION -

Most neuropathy patients are being treated for the wrong thing.

Chasing pain is not the same as restoring nerve function.

PATIENTS WHO CAME TO US AFTER EVERYTHING ELSE FAILED:

MARY SUE

From pins and needles so severe it felt like walking on broken glass with every step to walking her dog again every morning. No pins and needles for the first time in three years.

RON BILL

From feet so numb he was afraid to drive and had already lost a toe to driving again without fear. Back to being fully independent.

From hands too weak to open a jar, button her coat, or hold a pen steadily to cooking her own meals again. Writing cards to her grandchildren.

From burning so intense it woke him every night. Three doctors told him to just manage it. To first full night of sleep in two years. Off his sleep medication entirely.

This is not standard acupuncture. It is precision-based nerve restoration.

If You’ve Been Told There’s No Real Solution - Read This.

Neuropathy is a breakdown in cellular and nervous-system communication - not just pain. Our Vital Repair Method™ restores nerve health by calming inflammation, improving circulation and oxygen delivery, supporting cellular energy production, and normalizing nerve signaling. We treat the root, not the symptom.

It started 10 years ago researching the best neuropathy protocols for my own aunt. We became pioneers of integrative neuropathy solutions in New Jersey — 7 years ago, before any other acupuncture clinic. Those protocols never stopped evolving and now include our proprietary AMS Advanced homeopathics and herbal formulas.

EARTH DAY 2026

A Healthier Planet, A Healthier You

CCelebrated every year on April 22, Earth Day serves as a powerful reminder that caring for the planet is deeply connected to caring for ourselves. In 2026, the global theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights how individual and community actions can create meaningful environmental change—while also improving personal health and wellbeing.

At its core, Earth Day encourages habits that benefit both the environment and the body. Spending time outdoors— whether walking, gardening, or simply enjoying fresh air—has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and support overall mental health. Clean air and water, two pillars of environmental protection, are also essential to preventing illness and promoting long-term wellness.

Simple lifestyle shifts can have a lasting impact. Choosing locally grown foods not only supports regional farmers but also provides fresher, more nutrient-rich options. Reducing plastic use and minimizing household toxins can limit exposure to harmful chemicals, creating a healthier home environment. Even small actions like conserving energy or walking instead of driving contribute to both environmental sustainability and physical fitness.

Since its founding in 1970, Earth Day has grown into a global movement involving more than a billion people. Its continued relevance reflects a growing understanding that environmental health and human health are inseparable. Earth Day 2026 offers an opportunity to reset and refocus. By making mindful choices that support the planet, individuals can also nurture their own well-being—proving that a healthier Earth truly leads to healthier lives.

Friendships That Stick The Social Benefits of Summer Camp

TThere’s something uniquely powerful about the friendships formed at summer camp. Removed from the pressures of school, social labels, and daily routines, children are free to connect in more authentic and meaningful ways. Camp creates an environment where shared experiences—whether it’s learning a new skill, tackling a challenge, or simply laughing around a campfire—become the foundation for lasting bonds.

Unlike the structured social settings of school, camp encourages organic interaction. Kids meet peers from different towns, backgrounds, and perspectives, helping them build stronger communication skills and a broader sense of empathy. Without the distractions of screens, they engage face-to-face, learning how to navigate conversations, resolve conflicts, and collaborate as part of a team.

These connections often deepen quickly. Spending full days together fosters a sense of belonging that can be harder to achieve during the school year. Campers learn to

For many children, these friendships extend far beyond the summer months. Letters, texts, and reunions keep those connections alive, reinforcing the idea that meaningful relationships can be formed anywhere.

Camp friendships also help children build confidence in social settings. When kids feel accepted and valued, they are more likely to express themselves, try new things, and step outside their comfort zones. These positive social experiences often carry over into school, extracurricular activities, and future environments, shaping how they approach relationships later in life.

Additionally, summer camp teaches children important life skills through friendship. Navigating disagreements, sharing responsibilities, and working toward common goals help campers develop emotional intelligence and resilience. Being part of a close-knit group encourages accountability and respect, showing children how their actions affect others.

In a world where social interactions are increasingly digital, summer camp offers something refreshingly real: the chance to unplug, connect deeply, and build friendships that are genuine, supportive, and lasting—memories and relationships that often remain a meaningful part of childhood well into adulthood.

Unlock the Potential

of Your Backyard!

Do you wonder how to unlock the potential of your backyard?

We asked this question to our local expert, Rich Cording, Sr., a New Jersey licensed landscape architect with over 50 years of experience, and his answer was insightful. “My advice is to call a licensed landscape architect,” he says. “They have been trained to ask the specific questions, listen to your goals, analyze your site conditions, and then provide you with options to meet both your goals and your site conditions.”

continued on the next page

Unlock the Potential of Your Backyard!

Some homeowners may think that their yards are too small to do much, but Rich Sr. and his team of landscape architects can work magic! “You’d be amazed at what we can do. One of our clients had a small backyard in northern New Jersey. They wanted a deck, a fire pit, new fencing, and a parking area. We got everything in there, and it won first place in the New Jersey Landscape Award competition hosted by the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association.”

The homeowner shared their enthusiasm for CLC in this Google review: “From the very first phone call with Rich Sr.—who told me that every project, big or small, is treated with the same care—we knew we were in the best hands.”

Other clients want very formal yards to match their stately homes. “Some wonderful clients of ours, who had a fairytale home in Montclair, New Jersey, had an overgrown courtyard with a well-worn fountain,” says Rich Sr. Working with an exceptional landscape design prepared by Lisa Mierop of Montclair, the talented craftsmen at CLC installed this beautiful backyard. Rich Sr. continues, “With the fountain renovated, we installed a new fountain base, a pea-gravel walking path with a bluestone border, and lush plantings to complement the architecture of the home.”

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans must be modified when faced with the unexpected. “One example,” Rich Sr. shares, “is a project that took place in Livingston, New Jersey. We knew there was some ledge rock on the property, but once the overgrowth was removed, we realized there turned out to be a 50-foot-long cliff of solid rock! We could have suggested hiding this; however, we saw the beauty in the stone face, and after discussing it with the homeowners, we washed the ledge rock and allowed it to become a feature of the overall landscape. The cleaned ledge rock turned into a beautiful, sculpted feature, and we integrated it with all the other homeowner goals: a deck, a pergola, an outdoor kitchen, an outdoor fire pit, lush plantings, and landscape lighting.”

“In my 50+ years of experience, during which our team has been faced with many challenging sites, we have always been able to find creative ideas for each one,” adds Rich Sr. “I have project managers who have decades of experience in landscape project management, so with that kind of experience, when they’re on site, they can easily pivot, finding ways to make each landscape project better.”

Of course, one of the big factors in any design and installation is budget, but CLC has a way to work with that, too. After listening to a client’s goals, studying site conditions, and reviewing town requirements, the landscape design team will develop a master plan that incorporates and balances all these factors. If the initial design does not meet a client’s budget, then alternate design ideas are discussed, while still honoring the goals and aesthetic style the homeowner desires. In other scenarios, CLC will advise how to phase the installation to spread the budget out and still achieve all the features of the design the homeowners fell in love with.

“Most fundamental at our company,” Rich Sr. adds, “we love what we do! We love working with varied homeowners, with diverse goals, and using our expertise and experience to help each client experience the joy of outdoor living! I cannot tell you how honored I am that CLC is the most awarded landscape design/build company in New Jersey!”

Declutter and Recycle Clean Out for a Greener Tomorrow

When it’s time to clean out unwanted items and debris from your garage, attic, basement or any room in your home, don’t get overwhelmed—get organized.

First decide what you need to get rid of and what you want to do with your items– donate, discard or recycle. Purchase a package of colored dot stickers at an office supply store, and use them to color-code the items by category. This simple procedure will help get you started.

Research your donations to see if local charities accept your items. Also, find out if they pick up or you have to transport them.

Recycle what you can. Champion Waste recycles cardboard, paper, magazines, copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, cast-iron and car and truck batteries. Champion Waste generally discounts removing recyclables, especially appliances, since there is no dumping charge for them. In May and September/ October, Essex County runs an electronics drop off day if you want to purge outdated home electronics.

Finally, determine if you can put your discards out for curb collection, if you want to rent a dumpster or you need to hire a clean-out service to take full control of your project.

Champion Waste can access your needs, give you advice and an estimate for your clean-out project. They offer container services with smaller trucks so they can fit dumpsters in places where the bigger trucks can’t. They also do live loads with a truck and crew to remove everything on the spot. They service clients that are just purging during the spring and fall, and those that are putting their house on the market.

Choosing the Right Stone for Your Outdoor Spaces

SSpring is the ideal time to upgrade your outdoor kitchen or BBQ area so it is ready for summer gatherings and to avoid the peakseason rush. The trend in outdoor surfaces continues to be durable, natural materials that can withstand UV exposure and temperature fluctuations.

Granite: Widely considered the top choice for outdoor surfaces. It is an igneous rock that has already survived extreme natural forces. Note that darker granites can absorb significant heat in direct sunlight.

Quartzite: A natural stone (not to be confused with engineered quartz) that offers soft veining like that of a marble but with characteristics of granite in that it is resistant to weathering and UV rays…although the price tag will be more than that of granite.

Soapstone: A non-porous natural stone that is naturally resistant to heat and chemicals. It develops a unique patina over time, is softer, and may scratch.

A final note on natural stone: remember that they are earth’s art, and no two stones are alike. They require upkeep, including periodic re-sealing, over time.

Quartz: Another surface option that has become available in recent years is “outdoor” quartz, which is manufactured and specialized to withstand the elements, unlike regular quartz, which can yellow and degrade in natural sunlight. It doesn’t require sealing but is more sensitive to high grill heat than natural stone.

Apex is here to guide you through your options—so you can make the best decision with confidence.

Hanging Egg Chairs

A Stylish and Functional Outdoor Favorite

HHanging egg chairs are popular in patios, porches, and indoor spaces for their unique blend of comfort, style, and versatility. One of the biggest benefits of a hanging egg chair is comfort. The gently curved, cocoon-like design supports the body and creates a sense of privacy. Many chairs come with plush cushions that cradle the back and legs. This makes them ideal for reading, napping, or simply unwinding. The subtle swaying motion adds a calming effect that helps reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Functionality is another major advantage that sets hanging egg chairs apart from traditional seating. Their flexible installation—suspended from a sturdy stand or securely mounted to a ceiling beam—means they fit spaces that standard chairs cannot. These chairs are just as at home outdoors—on decks, patios, and under pergolas—as indoors in sunrooms, bedrooms, or cozy corners. Additionally, many models feature weather-resistant materials, such as powdercoated steel frames and synthetic wicker, which help them withstand changing climates and make them a long-lasting investment.

Hanging egg chairs act as focal points in design. Their sculptural shape adds dimension and are space-efficient without overwhelming the space. Their suspended design frees up floor space while still offering ample seating. Whether as a quiet retreat or a social piece, they unite these benefits in one inviting design.

Keeping New Jersey Homes Safe from the Top Down

FFor more than 20 years, Expert Chimney & Roofing has been helping New Jersey homeowners protect and maintain one of their most important investments: their homes. The family owned company was founded by a dedicated father and is now proudly run by his sons, continuing a tradition of quality workmanship, reliability, and customer care.

Expert Chimney & Roofing offers a wide range of services designed to keep homes safe, functional, and looking their best. Their roofing work includes repairs, maintenance, new roof installations, and detailed inspections to identify issues before they become costly problems. The company also specializes in chimney cleaning, repairs, restoration, new chimney construction, and safety inspections to ensure proper ventilation and reduce fire hazards.

In addition, the team provides masonry and exterior home improvement services such as brick and stone installations, steps and walkways, decks and porches, stone veneers, siding, and skylight installation and repair. Each project is completed with a strong focus on durability, safety, and craftsmanship.

According to owner Toni Iseberi, customers say they appreciate the company’s professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail. The team prides itself on clear communication, dependable service, and standing behind its work with warranties. They also offer 24-hour availability for urgent repairs and emergencies.

Weather in the region can take a toll on homes. Long winters, heavy rain, and seasonal temperature changes often contribute to aging roofs, damaged shingles, and deteriorating chimney bricks. Tony says, “Homeowners should watch for warning signs such as missing shingles, cracked masonry, or moss buildup on the chimney”

Since many structural issues are not easily visible from the ground, regular inspections are important. While chimney and roof work can be done year round, Toni recommends calling a professional as soon as a concern appears. Early inspections can prevent minor issues from becoming major repairs.

Expert Chimney & Roofing offers free inspections and estimates and is fully licensed and insured, giving homeowners peace of mind that their homes are in experienced hands.

Landscaping Upgrades to Make Your Home Stand Out

AAs spring arrives, it’s the ideal time to refresh your property. “Spring is all about giving your landscape a fresh start,” says Kevin Macken, owner of K. Macken Landscape. Months of snow and cold often leave lawns and landscape beds looking tired, but a few smart improvements can quickly transform your home’s appearance.

Start with a thorough spring cleanup. “Clearing away winter debris is one of the most important things you can do for a healthy yard,” notes Macken. Cut back perennials and trim ornamental grasses before new growth. This not only creates a tidy look but also encourages healthy growth for the season.

Redefine bed edges. Clean, sharp lines between turf and planting beds make the landscape look well-maintained and intentional. Refresh mulch for color and

protection. New mulch gives beds a clean, unified appearance while helping soil retain moisture and preventing weeds.

Spring is ideal to address bare spots and damage from winter. Fertilizing, overseeding, or soil prep can help create a lush, healthy lawn that boosts your home’s appeal.

Add seasonal color near the entrance. Annual flowers brighten porches or patios, making your home feel more welcoming. Thoughtful placement complements your home’s style—just a few colorful spots can make a big impact.

Spring landscaping is the foundation for a healthy, beautiful property all year. “A wellmaintained landscape not only looks great, but adds real value to your home,” says Kevin Macken. Addressing cleanup, lawn care, pruning, and seasonal upgrades early

prevents bigger problems and keeps your home looking its best. Combining smart maintenance with visual improvements ensures your home stands out.

A Refresh Your Home with Indoor Plants

As spring and summer bring longer days and abundant natural light, it’s the perfect time to refresh your home with indoor plants that support both wellness and style. Beyond their beauty, many plants can help reduce small amounts of airborne pollutants, increase humidity, and boost mood and focus— making your living space feel lighter and more vibrant.

Popular warm-weather choices include the beautify Bromeiad, hardy snake plant, fast-growing spider plant, and trailing pothos, all known for being lowmaintenance and adaptable to bright, indirect light. For a touch of elegance, peace lilies offer soft white blooms while helping to maintain comfortable humidity levels. If you prefer something sun-loving, aloe vera thrives in bright windows and adds a practical element with its soothing gel.

During spring and summer, plants are in their peak growing season, meaning they naturally release more moisture into the air through transpiration. This can help counteract dryness from air conditioning and create a more comfortable indoor environment. At the same time, the presence of greenery has been shown to reduce stress, enhance focus, and elevate overall mood—ideal for busy households or home offices.

The Art of the Glow

Why Professional Expertise Matters in New Jersey Landscape Lighting

AAs the sun sets over the Garden State, the true potential of a home’s exterior is often left in the shadows. For New Jersey homeowners, landscape lighting is no longer just about visibility; it is an investment in security, lifestyle, and architectural beauty. However, achieving a “wow” factor that lasts requires more than just high-quality fixtures—it demands a level of professional mastery found only at the intersection of certified design and licensed technical skill.

When considering a transformation for your property, here are five essential pillars of a professional lighting project.

1. Award-Winning Design Expertise

A truly exceptional lighting system is an art form. Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting of North Jersey has set the gold standard in the region, known for their award-winning projects that treat light as a creative medium. For instance, their «Morristown Estate» project was recognized with a prestigious Award of Merit from the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP). Choosing a firm with a portfolio of nationally recognized work ensures your home’s architectural features, from grand facades to delicate garden textures, are highlighted with a sophisticated touch that DIY solutions simply cannot replicate.

2. The Value of Certified Professionals

Not all installers are created equal. Working with a Certified Outdoor Lighting Designer (COLD) and a Certified Landscape Lighting Technician (CLLT) is vital for long-term success.

Designers (COLD) focus on the “emotional” impact and artistic placement, ensuring the system enhances the property’s natural beauty while adhering to advanced lighting principles.

Technicians (CLLT) are rigorously trained in the technical precision of installation, voltage management, and system maintenance, guaranteeing your investment performs as beautifully on year ten as it does on day one.

3. Legal Compliance: The NJ Electrical License Requirement

In the state of New Jersey, safety and legality go hand-in-hand. It is a legal requirement for professionals to hold a New Jersey Electrical License to install low-voltage landscape lighting systems exceeding 10 volts. While some may view low-voltage work as a minor task, the NJ Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors strictly mandates that this work be performed by a licensed contractor to ensure all installations meet the Uniform Construction Code (UCC). Hiring a licensed professional protects you from potential liability, code violations, and safety hazards.

4. Precision Engineering for Safety and Security

Beyond aesthetics, professional lighting is a critical safety feature. Strategically placed lights eliminate dark corners that could hide intruders and illuminate potential trip hazards like steps or uneven walkways. A certified designer understands how to balance these functional needs with glare-free illumination, providing a secure environment without creating “crime-scene” floodlighting.

5. Seamless Smart Integration

Modern luxury living in 2026 relies on integration. Professional systems now offer seamless smartphone control, allowing homeowners to manage lighting “scenes” for entertaining or security at the touch of a button. These smart systems are designed to be energyefficient and durable, using architectural-grade LED technology that offers a much longer lifespan and better color quality than retail-grade alternatives.

Illuminating your New Jersey home is an opportunity to extend your living space and celebrate your property’s unique character. By partnering with a licensed, certified, and award-winning team like Lighthouse Outdoor Lighting of North Jersey, you ensure that your home doesn’t just have lights—it has a masterpiece.

NAN RING

A Creative Life

G

Growing up at the Jersey Shore, Nan Ring would tell anyone listening that she would be an artist when she grew up. Her mother would then hand her some crayons. Private art lessons at 8 years old led to winning an art award in high school, and then on to majoring in art at Syracuse University, followed by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

As many young adults interested in a creative career do, Ring moved to New York City after college. Her creativity found expression in many ways in the city. At first she spent 10 years working in restaurants at night so she could paint during the day exploiting natural light. She became the pastry chef at the famed Gotham Bar & Grill. After the New York Times published an essay she wrote in the “Hers” column in its Sunday Magazine, Ring was offered a book deal, and subsequently Bantam published Walking On Walnuts-A Culinary Memoir while writing freelance for periodicals.

Choosing to focus on painting she moved to New Jersey in 2001, and in 2006 began teaching art in a private high school. And at the same time in 2010 finished an MFA program in painting remotely through the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Now one of the artists working out of the Manufacturers Village where she maintains a studio, she continues to teach and paint.

Ring often addresses women’s political issues and has done so here in A Mighty Woman #1, a 75x59 inch oil on canvas. While in a kitchen doing what Ring refers to as “women’s work,” the subject’s face is based on the face of the Statue of Liberty and the title references a line in the Emma Lazarus poem on its base. Note that the pot she attends to is boiling over, referencing, Ring says, the melting pot our population is often referred to as. Outside the window: a storm is brewing.

Here She Is #6, a 40x30 oil on canvas, finds three young women at the seaside, where we remember that Ring grew up. Ring likes to work in series and this is also part of a group of related works, one in which she addresses the brief aspect of life. These are young, ordinary women who are painted from a photograph. Struck by the tight grouping of the three women at the edge of the ocean, Ring has contrasted, she says, the intimate inside the vast.

Again, working from a photo of real life, Two Gentlemen On The Subway, a 19x13 oil on canvas finds her son and a friend. She likes, she says, the way that light defines forms, and the tension between drawn lines and painted colored shapes. We love the softly defined, yet definite edges and get especially lost in this painting.

Nan Ring’s paintings always seem to stop us in our tracks. You can see more of them on her website, www.nanringstudio.com

FROM DESPAIR TO HOPE: Conquering Peripheral Neuropathy with Rose Gold Wellness

“It’s as though I’m stepping from razor blade to razorblade.”

“It feels like my feet are under attack by fire ants.”

“Like I’m walking on wet paint with rolled up socks.”

And you’re in this kind of pain all the time.

“It’s relentless, keeping you up at night and preventing you from doing even the most mundane tasks. Things that I used to take for granted, like wearing shoes and going grocery shopping. Two of my three children were getting married last year and I wasn’t even sure I was going to be able to attend their weddings,” shares Nancy W.

Nancy was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2015, a degenerative condition affecting almost 5% of people over the age of 55.

“My doctor sat me down and said, ‘Nancy I’m so sorry to tell you this, but you have peripheral neuropathy. I’m going to prescribe you gabapentin to manage the discomfort but overall, neuropathy is untreatable.’ My first thought was, ‘we can cure cancer but you can’t stop my feet from hurting?’ It felt like a cruel joke.”

While neuropathy can be caused by a number of things including diabetes and chemotherapy, over 23% of neuropathy cases are classified as idiopathic. In layman’s terms, the cause is unknown. This was the case with Nancy. “Basically every question I had was met with an ‘I don’t know. ’ It was depressing to say the least.”

Eventually, Nancy was forced to quit her job because the numbness had started to set in and prevented her from driving.

Fortunately for Nancy, she went to a talk Rose Gold Wellness gave on what they were doing to treat peripheral neuropathy.

“I thought it had to be a sham. After so many specialists told me there was no hope here was this Doctor on TV saying she had a 90% success rate in treating neuropathy! I just had to call and I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am that I did.”

Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, founder of Rose Gold Wellness, says that cases like Nancy’s are incredibly common. “Almost all of my neuropathy patients have been told at one point or another that there is no hope. I like to think I specialize in offering hope.” To quote the New York Times, “Chinese medicine proves itself where Western medicine fails.”

“Acupuncture has been treating complicated, chronic conditions like neuropathy for thousands of years,” shares Dr. Rosie.

“I start with a foundation based on this time-tested science and my two decades of clinical experience. I then tailor treatments based on a number of factors including the severity of your neuropathy, how long you’ve had it, whether or not there are any underlying factors, things of that nature. It’s because of these personalized treatment programs that we’re seeing such incredible results!”

Four months after treatment, Nancy is back bat work and thriving. “Being back at work isn’t even the most exciting part,” exclaims Nancy. “Not only was I able to attend my son’s wedding, but I could walk down the aisle! It was the most magical moment and I have Dr. Rosie to thank for it. To think, I might’ve missed that.” Nancy held back tears.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its cause, it’s time to call Dr. Rosie and the staff at Rose Gold Wellness. Call (862) 622-6289 to schedule your very own comprehensive consultation and visit RoseGoldWellness.com to learn more.

Skinsplendid: Where Aesthetics Meets Thoughtful Care

Located in Upper Montclair, and New York City, Skinsplendid is redefining aesthetic medicine with a personalized, patient-first approach rooted in both safety and natural results. The mother-daughters run practice, led by Christine Adams, MBA, MSN, NP-BC, has spent the past five years building a loyal following, offering a full range of skin health services including injectables, lasers, and advanced facials. Adams is joined by her daughters, Eliza Adams and Emma Adams, BSN, RN, who play integral roles in both patient experience and business operations.

Known for its conservative philosophy and meticulous attention to detail, the practice prioritizes natural, refreshed results over overdone transformations. Their signature technique, “SprinkleTox,” reflects that mindset. Rather than treating wrinkles alone, the focus is on strategic placement to create a subtle lift. As Christine explains, “I don’t do Botox for the wrinkle. I do it for the lift.”

At Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle Specialists, we provide innovative and compassionate care to get our patients back on their feet.

What truly sets Skinsplendid apart is its commitment to safety and innovation. The practice offers ultrasound-guided assessments, a rare service in the industry that allows providers to locate existing filler and map facial anatomy before injecting. This added layer of precision enhances outcomes and provides peace of mind, especially for patients seeking correction of previous treatments.

Dr. Matthew F. Wachtler, DPM, FACFAS is board certified in Foot Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons.

Fresh Look at Dry Eye Treatment

MMaison De Vision, led by optometrist Dr. Anuradha Rana, is redefining eye care with a boutique, patientcentered approach that blends medical expertise with a modern, spa-like experience. While the practice offers comprehensive services for patients of all ages, from routine eye exams to contact lens fittings and disease management, one area of growing focus is advanced treatment for dry eye.

Dry eye is more common than many people realize, and often misunderstood. Symptoms can include redness, blurry vision, eye fatigue, discharge, or even excessive tearing. “Watery eyes are actually a sign of dryness,” Dr. Rana explains, noting that environmental factors, hormonl changes, and seasonal allergies can all play a role

At Maison De Vision, patients benefit from advanced diagnostic testing that evaluates tear quality, gland function, and inflammation. From there, customized treatment plans are created based on individual needs and budget.

Among the most innovative offerings is IPL, or intense pulsed light therapy, a multi-session treatment designed to reduce inflammation and improve tear production. Unlike traditional methods like eye drops or warm compresses, IPL addresses the root cause of dry eye, providing longlasting relief. Many patients see significant improvement after a series of four sessions, with only occasional maintenance needed.

Beyond function, IPL also offers aesthetic benefits, helping to reduce fine lines and improve skin tone around the eyes.

Additional treatment options include punctal gel inserts that help retain moisture for several months, as well as other inoffice therapies that support overall eye health.

Maison De Vision accepts both vision and medical insurance, making high-quality, advanced eye care accessible. With its personalized approach and commitment to innovation, the practice is helping patients not only see better, but feel better in their everyday lives.

A Doctor Who Heals From Experience

WWhat shapes a truly compassionate doctor? For Dr. Rosie Strelnick, DACM, LAc, of Rose Gold Wellness, that answer comes from lived experience.

As a teenager and young adult, Dr. Rosie battled dysautonomia, a complex condition that disrupts essential functions like heart rate, digestion, and blood pressure. Her symptoms were severe and relentless. She experienced frequent fainting spells, debilitating migraines, and gastroparesis that left her stomach essentially paralyzed. She was unable to eat normally and relied on a feeding tube for three years.

It was a painful, isolating experience that took over her life and, in many ways, defined her high school years. While others her age were focused on friends, sports, and milestones, she was managing constant symptoms, doctor visits, and the emotional weight of being so physically limited. Even attending prom meant figuring out how to hide her feeding tube just to feel somewhat normal for a night.

Everything began to shift when her uncle brought her to an acupuncturist. For the first time, she experienced real relief. That moment didn’t just improve her health; it completely changed her direction.

“Acupuncture quite literally saved my life,” she says. That experience led her to pursue a doctorate and dedicate her life to helping others find the same kind of relief she once needed.

Today, she describes her practice as “The Last Resort With The Best Results,” a place where patients often arrive after exhausting every other option. Many have been told there’s nothing more that can be done, or that they simply have to learn to live with their symptoms. Dr. Rosie approaches those cases differently.

What truly sets her apart is perspective. She understands what it feels like to be

dismissed, to live with uncertainty, and to have your life put on hold by your health.

“I’ve sat where my patients sit,” she says. “I know what it feels like to not be heard, and to be told to just deal with it.”

That experience drives her work every day. Dr. Rosie specializes in treating autoimmune conditions and fibromyalgia, and she has a particular passion for helping patients with complex, hardto-diagnose cases that other providers haven’t been able to figure out. She is deeply committed to working with people who feel overlooked or stuck, helping them finally make sense of what’s going on in their bodies.

Her goal isn’t just symptom management; it’s helping people get their lives back, regain function, and feel like themselves again.

At Rose Gold Wellness, care is personal. Patients are seen, heard, and taken seriously. Dr. Rosie combines clinical expertise with genuine understanding, creating a space where healing feels possible again.

The Future of Vision Breakthroughs in Comfort and Protection for

Every Age

EEyecare has entered a new era—one that goes far beyond simply correcting vision. In 2026, protecting long-term eye health is just as important as seeing clearly. Thanks to FDA-cleared innovations, today’s treatments can slow disease progression, improve daily comfort, and preserve vision from childhood through the golden years. Whether you’re a parent worried about a child’s rapidly changing prescription or an adult struggling with tired, irritated eyes, modern eyecare now offers proven medical solutions—not just temporary fixes.

For children, one of the most important advances addresses myopia, or nearsightedness. Progressive myopia in childhood isn’t just an inconvenience; it increases the risk of serious eye diseases later in life, including retinal detachment and glaucoma. New spectacle lenses

developed by **Essilor** are the first FDAcleared lenses clinically shown to slow myopia progression in children as young as six. Using advanced lenslet technology, these lenses help signal the eye to grow more slowly, reducing myopia progression by an average of more than 70% over two years compared to standard glasses.

Adults, meanwhile, are benefiting from significant breakthroughs in dry eye care. Chronic dry eye is often linked to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, a condition that causes tears to evaporate too quickly. Treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy help reduce inflammation and restore healthy oil flow, while punctal occlusion—tiny, comfortable plugs placed in the tear ducts—helps retain natural tears. Used together, these treatments can dramatically improve comfort and visual clarity.

Your eyes work harder than ever in today’s digital world. A comprehensive vision evaluation can identify which advanced treatments are right for you and your family. Schedule a consultation with Dr. S. Rustagi and see better, feel better, and protect your vision for the future.

Understanding FEAR

II’ve addressed the topic of fear many times over the years, but if there’s one person, I would turn to for insight on how to embrace it—and ultimately use it to your advantage—it would be my good friend and mentor, Dr. Mark McLaughlin.

Dr. Mark R. McLaughlin is a neurosurgeon, author, youth coach, and philanthropist dedicated to neutralizing the paralyzing impact of fear in our society. He’s the author of Cognitive Dominance: A Brain Surgeon’s Quest to Outthink Fear

Barry Farber: What are some of the situations you’ve dealt with over the years when operating under life-and-death circumstances?

Dr. Mark McLaughlin: When I speak to my students or cadets at West Point—or anyone about performance enhancement—I emphasize that it’s a process. You’re not going to come out of the gates completely fearless. You have to give yourself a break. It’s taken me over 20 years to approach surgery the way I do today. You need rules, routines, and rituals. In neurosurgery, we have principles like don’t cut what you can’t see, always leave a drain, never worry about a patient alone, and if you’re struggling, get more exposure. These are technical rules, but they’re also powerful allegories for life.

Take “don’t cut what you can’t see.” Before I make any incision, I need to understand everything between those two blades. It’s the same with decision-making. Interestingly, the word decision comes from the Latin word “to cut.” Every decision requires as much clarity and information as possible. Don’t act unless you can truly see what’s in front of you.

Barry Farber: I agree—but there are times when you can’t possibly have all the information. I see people in business stuck in endless meetings, never making a decision. At what point do you take action?

Dr. Mark McLaughlin: Absolutely—life throws curveballs, both in the operating room and beyond. That’s why you fall back on fundamentals. Be yourself. Don’t worry about what others think of your decisions. Anchor yourself in your core principles. When I face a tough decision, I remind myself: I’m a servant. That’s my purpose. So, I ask: How can I serve in this moment? Will this help? Will it ease suffering? Will it improve the situation? I strive to be useful. The second key is presence. You cannot operate— literally or figuratively—while worrying about the future. You must focus entirely on what needs to be done next… right now.

Barry Farber: William Danforth, founder of Ralston Purina, wrote in I Dare You: “Be your own self, at your very best, all the time.” That’s difficult for many people who feel the need to adapt or seek approval. What does “be yourself” really mean?

Dr. Mark McLaughlin: I love that book. Life is a series of interruptions. You have a plan—and then something disrupts it. That interruption often creates anxiety because it introduces the unknown. We think it’s getting in the way of where we need to go. In those moments, you have to fall back on who you are.

Let me share a personal story. I was preparing for a difficult surgery at the end of a long day. I was exhausted. The procedure had already been delayed, and I had just received troubling news—my father was seriously ill. I questioned whether I was in the right state of mind to proceed.

I decided I needed to postpone the surgery. As I walked toward the patient’s room to tell him, something shifted. I thought about my father—who had just been diagnosed with cancer—and how much I wanted to be with him. I asked myself: What would my father want me to do right now? The answer was clear— he would want me to take care of the person in front of me.

So, I made a decision. I would dedicate the surgery to my father. Instead of retreating, I would turn the moment into something meaningful… a tribute to him. The surgery went incredibly well. Later, I told my father what I had done, and it became one of the greatest gifts I could give him. What I realized in that moment is this: fear lives in the future. It doesn’t exist in the present. By shifting my focus… by grounding myself in purpose and love— I dismantled that fear. I removed it entirely.

And something powerful happened. I felt more love … for my father, for my patient, and for my work. That’s why fear is the enemy of performance. It is the opposite of love. It prevents us from fully engaging—not just with people, but with what we do.

And when you truly love what you do… you become unstoppable.

Barry Farber: I love that.
