Software-defined vehicles: Industry insiders liken cars to ‘smartphones on wheels’ MOBILITY IS INCREASINGLY BEING SHAPED BY SOFTWARE: AT THE RECENT BERLIN STOP OF THE AUTOMECHANIKA ROADSHOW, EXPERTS FROM ACROSS THE TECH AND AUTOMOTIVE SECTORS HIGHLIGHTED HOW THIS SHIFT IS TRANSFORMING VEHICLES, THE AFTERMARKET, AND THE SERVICES INDUSTRY

T

he automotive world is standing on the edge of its next major transformation, and the conversation is already well underway. In September 2025, Automechanika’s organisers partnered with mobility platform HEY/PIONEER to host a series of international roadshows leading into Automechanika Frankfurt 2026. The Berlin reception became the focal point of this global dialogue. Moderated by Hans Hamer, CEO of HEY/PIONEER, the forum gathered leading voices from both tech and

automotive industries to discuss how artificial intelligence, software-defined vehicles (SDVs), and new digital business models are reshaping mobility. “The HEY/PIONEER Reception showed how software-defined vehicles, automated mobility solutions and new digital business models are already rewriting the rules of the automotive industry,” said Hamer, reflecting on the event. “It is already clear which innovations are establishing themselves in the marketplace and which issues will be decided in future.”

For Olaf Musshoff, Director of Automechanika Frankfurt, the roadshow offered crucial input for the flagship 2026 fair. “In-depth dialogue with tech entrepreneurs and start-ups delivers decisive momentum for the continued development of our Automechanika trade fairs around the globe,” he said. “The automotive aftermarket has the potential to play a pioneering role in the technological transformation — and that is precisely what we are aiming for here with our road show.”

CARS AS ‘SMARTPHONES ON WHEELS’ So what exactly is a software-defined vehicle? Put simply, it’s a car in which hardware and software are separated, allowing software to govern most functions.

Updates can be delivered over-the-air, meaning safety features, infotainment, and even driving performance can be altered long after a vehicle leaves the factory. The analogy used repeatedly by insiders is that cars are becoming ‘smartphones on wheels’. This shift brings profound implications for both manufacturers and the aftermarket. For the customer, it means vehicles can be continuously upgraded. For workshops, it introduces new layers of complexity requiring fresh expertise.

Technology partnerships also featured heavily in Berlin. Tobias Liebelt, CEO of Benteler Mobility, stressed that progress depends on collaboration: “Our experience has shown that autonomous driving can only succeed when numerous components work together. That is why we are not building a single vehicle, but rather an entire mobility ecosystem — by working together with partners who help to design the infrastructure, operation and financing.” This broader view underscores the aftermarket’s evolving role. Workshops and parts suppliers are no longer just service providers; they are becoming part of a larger ecosystem where infrastructure, financing, and software platforms all intersect.

Speaking at the Berlin forum, Wencke Schmidt, Director Automotive, Manufacturing & German Mittelstand at Google Cloud, described the scale of the change: “The transition to softwaredefined vehicles requires companies to rethink everything. We are supporting this transformation with Google Cloud because it is a comprehensive platform that not only accelerates vehicle development and improves the customer experience, but also facilitates the optimisation of sales and aftersales operations.” For an aftermarket increasingly tied to digital platforms, the message was clear: the vehicle business is no longer just about engines and components. Data, connectivity, and customer-centric services are now central pillars of competitiveness.

Auto Channel Issue #82 August 2025

THE AI PERSPECTIVE Closing the Berlin panel was Roy Uhlmann, CEO & Co-Founder of Motor AI, who presented emerging AI approaches for autonomous driving.

He praised the forum’s diversity of perspectives, while also pointing to the responsibilities tied to innovation: “Open dialogue is essential if we wish to achieve a shared understanding of transparency, accountability and applicable European standards for autonomous driving. In my opinion, this is the only way that we can continue to drive forward the greatest innovation the automotive industry has seen in recent decades.”

IMPACTS ON THE AFTERMARKET For workshops worldwide, including in New Zealand, Uhlmann’s comments underline a reality: servicing tomorrow’s vehicles won’t just be about tools and diagnostics but also about compliance, standards, and trusted data practices. The implications of these shifts are already visible. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), with their reliance on cameras, sensors, and software, are making routine repairs more complex. Calibration after even minor workshop interventions is becoming mandatory. As Musshoff explained, this is both a challenge and an opportunity. New diagnostic tools and continuous training demand investment, but they also allow independent workshops to specialise and differentiate. Overthe-air updates may reduce some traditional maintenance work, but they also open doors to predictive maintenance, software services, and cybersecurity expertise.

PREPARING FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER The Berlin roadshow underlined that the automotive sector is no longer defined solely by steel, gears, and grease. Software is now a core component of the vehicle lifecycle, reshaping how cars are built, driven, and maintained. For New Zealand’s automotive aftermarket, these developments carry clear signals. Preparing staff for new competencies in IT and electronics, investing in diagnostic tools, and building partnerships with tech providers will be essential steps. Changing skill sets will be required for the aftermarket: sensor calibration, advanced diagnostics, and the integration of predictive data into everyday service operations. The roadshow set the scene for next year’s Automechanika Frankfurt 2026, where a new format — HighTech4Mobility — will be unveiled to provide a platform for delegates and attendees to explore SDV-related topics.

WHAT IS A SOFTWARE-DEFINED VEHICLE? A software-defined vehicle (SDV) is one in which much of the vehicle’s functionality — safety systems, driver assistance, infotainment, and performance features — is determined and updated by software rather than fixed hardware. Like a smartphone, an SDV can receive new capabilities after purchase via over-the-air updates, subscriptions or feature activations. For workshops this shift means more than new diagnostic tools: technicians must add software skills, data access and cybersecurity awareness to their toolkit. Calibration after repairs — especially for ADAS sensors and cameras — is increasingly mandatory, while predictive maintenance, remote diagnostics and software services create new revenue streams. SDVs also mean new suppliers and platforms (cloud providers, AI firms and software vendors) are becoming central players in mobility. SDVs are not limited to luxury or high-end cars — major brands are increasingly using this approach across their fleets. In short, cars are evolving into ‘smartphones on wheels’, where software is as important as the engine itself. For the trade, the key takeaway is simple: workshops that invest in diagnostics, training and data workflows can turn the software shift into an opportunity rather than a threat.

DIGITAL SOLUTIONS, PRACTICAL BENEFITS Some mechanics may wonder whether digital solutions are designed to replace the knowledge and expertise that define great workshops. The reality is the opposite. These tools are not about replacing know-how, they’re about removing friction from the process. A mechanic’s skill lies in diagnosing problems, carrying out repairs, and keeping vehicles safe on the road. Digital ordering tools simply clear the path, making sure the parts, consumables, and essentials are there when they’re needed.

WHY EFFICIENCY DRIVES REPEAT BUSINESS

How workshops are saving time with digital tools IN A BUSY WORKSHOP, TIME IS MONEY; EVERY EXTRA STEP IN THE PROCESS, WHETHER IT’S SOURCING A PART, FILLING OUT AN ORDER, OR CHASING STOCK, CAN SLOW DOWN JOBS AND EAT INTO PRODUCTIVITY

T

hose minutes quickly add up, affecting the number of vehicles you can service in a day and ultimately impacting profitability. That’s why more workshops across New Zealand are turning to digital tools to remove friction from the ordering process and keep their bays moving.

THE POWER OF BARCODE SCANNING One of the most powerful tools now available to trade customers is the barcode scanner feature on the Supercheap Auto Trade website. Instead of manually searching for part numbers or typing out descriptions, simply scan the product barcode and add it directly to your cart. It’s quick, accurate, and eliminates the risk of ordering the wrong item. Accuracy matters in a trade environment. With multiple jobs often running at once, mechanics need confidence that the right part will be on hand at the right time. A small error, like ordering the wrong filter or gasket, can result in costly delays. The barcode scanner feature ensures that what you see is what you get, saving workshops from unnecessary downtime and frustration.

STREAMLINED ORDERING FOR EVERY JOB But barcode scanning is just the beginning. The Supercheap Auto Trade website has been built with efficiency at its core, giving trade customers access to a suite of features that simplify everyday ordering, such as — Bulk order upload: For larger jobs or

6

Auto Channel Issue #84 October 2025

workshops stocking up across multiple categories, uploading a bulk order file saves time and ensures nothing is missed. Reorder function: Many workshops have go-to products they use time and time again like oil, filters, or workshop consumables. The reorder function allows you to save and repeat your most common purchases in just a few clicks. Super Essentials: Everyday consumables like rags, gloves, and sprays can be sourced quickly, ensuring you never run out of the basics that keep a workshop moving. By making these tools available in one place, Supercheap Auto Trade removes the hassle from the ordering process. Whether you’re managing a single bay or a larger workshop, the difference these features make in day-to-day operations is tangible.

ORDERING MADE SIMPLE, COLLECTION MADE EASY The Supercheap Auto Trade website is designed to make ordering fast and stress-free, but the convenience doesn’t stop online. With a national network of stores, key items can be ready for Click & Collect in 30 minutes, giving workshops confidence that parts are close at hand when they’re needed. It’s another way the Trade program helps keep jobs moving, easy online ordering supported by quick access to stock, so workshops can focus on servicing vehicles and customers without unnecessary hold-ups.

Customers trust workshops that respect their time. Delays caused by missing or incorrect parts don’t just disrupt workflow — they impact the customer experience too. When a vehicle is off the road longer than expected, it’s not just inconvenient for the customer, it can harm the trust that keeps them coming back. By embracing digital tools, workshops can ensure smoother operations, quicker turnarounds, and more satisfied customers. That efficiency becomes a competitive advantage, helping to build repeat business and long-term loyalty.

A BETTER WAY FORWARD Across New Zealand, workshops are navigating increasing demand, more vehicles on the road, tighter timelines, and higher customer expectations. Digital solutions like the Supercheap Auto Trade website are a practical way to meet those challenges head-on. The combination of barcode scanning, bulk order upload, reorder functionality, and rapid Click & Collect makes the process of sourcing parts faster and simpler than ever. It’s not about adding more technology for technology’s sake, it’s about practical improvements that free up time, reduce stress, and keep workshops focused on the job at hand.

PUT THESE TOOLS TO WORK IN YOUR WORKSHOP If your workshop hasn’t yet taken advantage of these digital solutions, now is the time. With every order, you’ll save time, reduce errors, and keep your bays moving. Ready to make ordering easier for your business? Sign up today at trade. supercheapauto.co.nz and put these digital tools to work in your workshop.

A legacy of precision: Harman Motors and the spirit of a generational workshop BUILT ON FAMILY COMMITMENT AND AN EYE FOR INNOVATION, HARMAN MOTORS HAS BEEN PART OF CHRISTCHURCH’S MOTORING LANDSCAPE FOR MORE THAN 75 YEARS, ADAPTING ACROSS GENERATIONS — NOW STRENGTHENED FURTHER THROUGH ITS MEMBERSHIP WITH BLACKFERN COOPERATIVE

I

ts story, still unfolding today, mirrors the spirit of Blackfern Cooperative — built on a vision of legacy, collaboration, and long-term success. The journey began in 1947, when founder Lawrie Harman opened a modest workshop down a muddy driveway. By the late 1950s, he purchased land on Colombo Street but needed family support to build on it. A father-in-law produced £1,000 in a paper bag from under the seat of his Studebaker, and another relative chipped in. With that, Lawrie constructed the first dedicated Harman Motors building in 1960. In the 1970s, Lawrie’s sons John and David joined the business, helping it grow through mechanical repairs and fuel sales. By the 1990s, with their father retired, the brothers built a strong reputation for precision engine tuning, specialising in European cars and earning loyal customers from across the South Island.

Technology changed quickly, and Harman Motors kept pace. A dyno and tuning bay were added, but by the 2000s, traditional tuning was fading as electronic control units (ECUs) restricted access. Instead of stepping back, the workshop adapted. In 2005, HP Tuners software unlocked new possibilities, and Harman Motors invested in training, equipment, and ECU-based performance tuning. They discovered tuning was about more than speed — it could also deliver efficiency and better fuel economy, depending on how vehicles were driven. Today, under second-generation owner David Harman, the workshop continues to evolve. One of Lawrie’s sons has since passed away, but the family ethos of precision and forward thinking remains. David describes the approach as keeping the “binoculars out,” always watching for industry shifts and staying

hands-on with the cars they specialise in. Looking ahead, David sees a future where petrol, diesel, hybrids, hydrogen, and EVs all play a role, rather than a single technology dominating. For now, the business continues to provide full mechanical repairs, servicing, WOF inspections, upgrades, and advanced tuning. Membership with Blackfern Cooperative has added further strength. As David explains: “Being part of Blackfern offers far more than just membership — it’s a strategic advantage. The cooperative’s collective strength creates real value for automotive professionals. For me, these benefits translate into stronger partnerships, smarter purchasing, and the confidence that my business is backed by a community built for success.” From a puddle-filled driveway in post-war Christchurch to a fully equipped modern workshop, Harman Motors shows how legacy and adaptability can sustain a business across generations.

CAPRICORN SOCIETY FOCUS

Capricorn in New Zealand: A journey of trust, tools and togetherness CAPRICORN’S STORY IN NEW ZEALAND BEGAN IN 1997, NOT WITH A GRAND LAUNCH, BUT WITH A SIMPLE IDEA SHARED IN A SINGLE ROOM: ONE MEMBER, FOUR SUPPLIERS, AND A BELIEF THAT INDEPENDENT WORKSHOPS COULD THRIVE BETTER TOGETHER

T

hat humble beginning in Auckland laid the foundation for what would become a strong, enduring community of nearly 6000 members today.

“When I joined Capricorn in 1997, there were only four suppliers to choose from. Today, there are hundreds. It’s been incredible to see how far we’ve come.” John O’Connell, Morrin Road Automotive, Capricorn’s first NZ Member

are its owners, meaning the success of Capricorn is shared with members through dividends, trade rebates and reward points. In 2025 Capricorn is celebrating its first-ever $20million trade rebate — a milestone the Group CEO, Brad Gannon, is very proud of. “Capricorn’s proud to have its highest-ever trade rebate this year, rewarding our members who support Capricorn with spend through their trade account. The more members spend, the more that is returned to them — it’s a simple concept which makes a big difference to small businesses.”

TOOLS THAT FIT THE NEW ZEALAND WAY STARTING SMALL, THINKING BIG The early years were about listening. Capricorn didn’t rush to blanket the country — it stayed close to Auckland, learning from the workshops and suppliers who were willing to give the model a go. That proximity helped build trust, and trust-built momentum. By the early 2000s, hundreds of members had joined, and New Zealand members were able to elect a New Zealand Director to the Capricorn Board. The cooperative model resonated with New Zealand businesses, many of which were already familiar with the principles of shared ownership and mutual benefit through New Zealand’s strong dairy cooperative tradition. Capricorn’s members

As Capricorn grew, so did its understanding of what worked in New Zealand. The Trade Account simplified admin with one monthly statement and predictable supplier payments — practical relief for busy workshop owners. It wasn’t just about convenience; it was about giving members back time to focus on their customers and their craft. Capricorn Rewards added a layer of value, shaped by how members actually used it. The program evolved based on member feedback, ensuring that the rewards were meaningful and relevant — providing tangible benefits for being part of the cooperative and the strength of the model in delivering real value.

“Capricorn saves us a lot of time by centralising our bills into one account. On top of that are the extra discounts and the rewards points we earn. Capricorn has been super beneficial to our business and a benefit to the automotive industry as a whole.” Neil Hunnibell, Autolab (Auckland)

Then came CAP ezi-parts, a tool born from the real-world challenge of sourcing tricky parts. It was launched in New Zealand, refined through member feedback, and proved its worth. It’s a reminder that innovation often starts with listening. CAP ezi-parts allowed members to filter searches and direct-message preferred suppliers, making the process of finding parts faster and more transparent. The Fuel Card followed a similar path — built around local fuel providers like Mobil, Allied Fuel Stops, NPD and Waitomo. It wasn’t just about discounts; it was about making sure the solution matched the map. The savings, combined with seamless integration into the Trade Account, made fuel management simpler and more cost-effective for workshops.

“Capricorn has made everything easier, with one main account, great deals and friendly, helpful representatives. I just think that anyone out there who isn’t a member is missing out on an awful lot.” Andrew Beccard, Beccard Motors (Hāwera)

NAVIGATING RISK, THE LOCAL WAY Capricorn also launched Capricorn Mutual in New Zealand, providing discretionary protection for members, with Capricorn Risk Services launched later brokering insurance

CAPRICORN SOCIETY: A HISTORY IN PICTURES

The precursor to Capricorn Society, called Group 11, was established in 1970 when Golden Fleece service station proprietors met at a conference in South Perth, Western Australia.

16

Auto Channel Issue #84 October 2025

Capricorn Society began in 1974 when the then 17 Golden Fleece service station owners in Western Australia formally registered a cooperative buying group. It was to grow from an informal alliance focused on pooling purchasing power into one of Australasia’s largest automotive aftermarket cooperatives.

Tim Peters, the first Liaison Officer in New Zealand (front, left) and Kevin Hamer, former Liaison Officer (front, right), were presented with the Capricorn Sales Achievement Award for their zone in 1999. Steve Barraclough, previous Group Business Development Manager (back, left) and Bob Jenkinson, previous Membership Development Manager (back, right), presented the award.

CAPRICORN SOCIETY FOCUS locally. The key is clarity — Capricorn members know what’s available, how it works, and where it fits within New Zealand’s legal framework. Capricorn has a team of Risk Account Managers who support members in New Zealand. This personalised service with local representatives is what Capricorn is known for, with a team of Area Managers also supporting members with their trade accounts.

“Capricorn Risk Services is proud to have a team on the ground in New Zealand providing personalised support and building relationships with members to make sure we’re there for them in the moments they need us.” Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

LISTENING, LEARNING, PUBLISHING In 2024, Capricorn released the first New Zealand-specific edition of its State of the Nation report. It wasn’t just data — it was a mirror for members and a map for the industry. The data reflected both optimism and the challenges workshops face. It gave voice to the realities of cost pressures, skills shortages, and the resilience of New Zealand operators. “Capricorn has been a trusted partner throughout our journey. During COVID, they provided timely information and advice on staff retention and customer safety. After the first lockdown, the business has continued to grow and is still going strong.” Marcel Preisig, Spillman Automotive (Auckland)

The Capricorn State of the Nation report provides a common fact base for policymakers, partners, and the wider industry. The 2025 Report is due to be launched in October.

A SEAT AT THE TABLE “The State of the Nation report doesn’t just give us numbers, it gives us a pulse check. It’s how we know what’s really happening in workshops across New Zealand. When members tell us they’re optimistic but stretched, we listen. That’s the kind of insight that helps us shape better tools, better support, and better outcomes for our members and the automotive industry.” Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS In 2025, Capricorn marked its 50-year anniversary. The celebration wasn’t just about numbers — though they were impressive: nearly 6000 New Zealand owner-members and 420+ suppliers. It was about relationships. Area Managers who’d worked with the same workshops for decades. Suppliers who’d grown from transactional partners to strategic allies. And members who’d helped shape the cooperative’s direction with their feedback, ideas and referrals and grown their workshop off the relationships and benefits.

“50 years is an incredible milestone, and Capricorn has been in New Zealand for more than half of that period. Working with our New Zealand members and preferred suppliers has been an absolute privilege. We’ve seen businesses, families and communities grow over the last couple of decades, and it’s the best part of our jobs to be part of those journeys.” Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

The anniversary was commemorated with celebrations, including events, social media throwbacks, and member recognition. It was a moment to reflect on how far Capricorn, its members and preferred suppliers had come — and to look ahead to the future.

New Zealand’s voice in Capricorn has been there since the early 2000s. Today, James Candish, a local workshop owner, represents that voice on the board. James joined the board in 2023 and, in addition to sitting on the board, also sits on a number of subcommittees. His presence is a reminder that Capricorn’s decisions are grounded in the lived experience of its members. Board representation ensures that New Zealand’s unique needs and perspectives are considered in strategic planning and decision-making. It’s not just symbolic — it’s structural. The cooperative model means members have a say in how the organisation is run, and that includes having a seat at the table.

THE ROAD AHEAD Capricorn’s journey in New Zealand has never been about flashy launches or one-size-fitsall solutions. It’s been about steady growth, practical tools, and a community that keeps shaping the future. When members say parts procurement takes too long, CAP ezi-parts gets another tweak. When fuel reconciliation is a pain, the Fuel Card gets smarter integration.

“We are committed to providing products and services to support the needs of our Members, no matter where they are based. We’re proud of our continued growth and commitment to ensuring the long-term success of our cooperative, and our members.” Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

The most telling moments aren’t in the stats — they’re in the conversations around workshop tables, the candid chats at events, and the quiet support from Area Managers who know their members by name. Capricorn’s field teams made over 17,100 member site visits in 2025, with 1400 phone calls from Area Managers and 90,480 contact-centre calls. These touchpoints are the heartbeat of the cooperative.

CAPRICORN SOCIETY FOCUS TRADE SHOWS AND GALAS: WHERE THE CAPRICORN COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER One of the most vibrant expressions of Capricorn’s cooperative spirit in New Zealand is found at its annual Trade Show and Gala event. These gatherings are more than just dates on the calendar, they’re cornerstone experiences that bring members, preferred suppliers, and the Capricorn team together in a shared space of connection, celebration, and collaboration. Held annually across key regions, Capricorn’s Trade Show and Gala Dinner in Auckland consistently sells out, a testament to its popularity and value. These events are eagerly anticipated by members who use them to explore new products, meet suppliers face to face, and discover tools and services that can help their businesses thrive. The Capricorn Trade Show offers a more social setting where members and suppliers can relax, share stories, and build relationships that go beyond business through an evening event. Whether it’s a formal dinner or a regional expo, these events are designed to honour the people who make Capricorn what it is.

“We always sell out in New Zealand and that’s because these events matter. They’re where Members meet the people behind the brands, and where suppliers get to hear directly from the workshops they support.” Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

deals, educational sessions, or simply the chance to connect. As Capricorn looks ahead to its next chapter, trade shows and galas will continue to play a vital role in strengthening the cooperative’s culture.

committed to helping members navigate these changes with confidence. The cooperative’s leadership team, including Capricorn Group CEO Brad Gannon, continues to invest in innovation, member support, and strategic partnerships.

A COMMUNITY IN MOTION Capricorn in New Zealand is more than a business model; it’s a community. The members in New Zealand are owners of the cooperative. Members swap notes on scan tools and apprenticeships. Area Managers connect people. These interactions build a network of support and shared knowledge. Events like trade shows, golf days, and conventions bring members and suppliers together in meaningful ways. They’re not just social, they’re strategic. They foster collaboration, spark ideas, and strengthen relationships. Capricorn’s conventions, including those held in Rotorua and Queenstown, have become bi-annual institutions that celebrate the cooperative spirit.

INNOVATION WITH PURPOSE Capricorn’s innovation is always purposeful. It’s driven by member feedback and grounded in real-world needs. Whether it’s launching a new digital tool, refining a rewards program, or expanding supplier networks, the goal is the same: to help members run better businesses. In 2025, Capricorn processed nearly $4 billion in member purchases from preferred suppliers. That scale gives the cooperative leverage to introduce new services and invest in technology that benefits everyone.

“Standing still is not an option. We must learn and explore these new technologies and be ready for the opportunities that come our way.” Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

From one workshop in Auckland to thousands across the country, Capricorn’s journey in New Zealand is a story of trust earned, tools built together, and a community that keeps moving forward. It’s a story of listening, adapting, and growing, one member at a time. As the cooperative looks ahead to its next chapter, the values that shaped its past — trust, transparency, and togetherness — remain its guiding principles. Capricorn in New Zealand isn’t just a success story. It’s a blueprint for how cooperatives can thrive by putting members first.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: BUILT TO LAST The success of these events reflects Capricorn’s commitment to creating meaningful experiences for its members. They’re carefully planned, professionally executed, and always focused on delivering value — whether that’s through exclusive

As Capricorn celebrates 50 years since it first began, the focus remains on growth, relevance, and member success. The automotive industry is evolving — electrification, connected vehicles, and changing consumer behaviours are reshaping the landscape. Capricorn is

In May 2002, the Capricorn Convention went to Queenstown for seven days of networking, learning and socialising. At that point, Capricorn New Zealand was still a young operation — having launched in 1997 — and was rapidly expanding its membership and supplier base, as workshops across both islands came on board.

CAPRICORN SOCIETY FOCUS

Q&A with Brad Gannon, Capricorn CEO BRAD GANNON LEADS CAPRICORN GROUP, ONE OF AUSTRALASIA’S KEY PLAYERS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET — HERE HE SHARES INSIGHTS INTO CAPRICORN’S ROLE IN SUPPORTING WORKSHOPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FACING THE SECTOR, AND HIS PERSONAL APPROACH TO LEADING A DIVERSE AND GROWING ORGANISATION Auto Channel: Your career has taken you from practising law to corporate governance, then into leadership roles at Capricorn, including CEO of the Automotive division, before stepping into the Group CEO role this year. How have those experiences shaped your approach to leading Capricorn today? Brad Gannon: I have worked at Capricorn for the past 17 years in a number of different leadership roles. These experiences have shaped my approach to leadership and how I lead the organisation. I know the organisation really well, and have a clear understanding of value creation, which when you’re a member organisation, is one of your clear deliverables. I think that knowing who your stakeholders are, and how you deliver value for them, is one of the most important parts of leading any organisation. At Capricorn we measure our success by how much value we return to our Community. That’s why I am really proud to announce a $20million trade rebate for Capricorn members this year and a 7 cents, partially franked in NZ, dividend for shareholders. These returns represent us delivering on our promise to members to deliver real value which will make a difference. What drew you to lead a cooperative, which is quite different from a traditional corporate structure? At Capricorn, I talk a lot about us being cooperative in philosophy and commercial in approach. This means that we keep our members, our owners, front of mind in everything we do, but we recognise that as custodians of members’ money we should use it in the most efficient and effective manner possible so we can maximise delivery of returns, services and benefits to them. The automotive aftermarket has changed significantly over the past decade. From your perspective, what have been the most transformative changes, and how is Capricorn adapting? Technology is the number-one driver of change in the automotive aftermarket, both in terms of the vehicles themselves and the technology that is part of the business. It also touches all parts of the customer journey, from how they interact with the business to how businesses deal with suppliers. And it’s changing, quickly. At Capricorn, we face the same challenges; we need to make sure we are adapting to new technologies and supporting our members to do the same. That’s why I’m pleased that Capricorn is investing in our

22

Auto Channel Issue #84 October 2025

core systems, we’ve introduced a new phone system and are looking at how AI can support our members, appreciating how time-poor and busy they are. With all change comes opportunity and there are plenty of really exciting opportunities to use technology for the benefit of our community. With EVs, hybrids, and advanced driver assistance systems becoming more mainstream, how do you see these technologies reshaping workshops in Australasia — and what role does Capricorn play in preparing members for this future? We know from our State of the Nation report the challenges that come with running a business — our Members are time-poor, they struggle to take a break or a holiday, and they’re struggling with an ongoing skills shortage. So keeping up with the latest technology is a challenge for them. But we’re also hearing from apprentices and some of our younger members just how excited they are about the technology in the industry, so like everything, it’s about balance. Balance between learning about the future and training apprentices on the technology to help keep them in the industry, without losing sight of the customers who members are looking after right now and the technology they are using. I think one of the key challenges we’re facing is the increasing number of new brands entering the market, adding to the number of parts and suppliers that workshop owners need to have access to. This can add to the stress of running a workshop, and is something that Capricorn is working on. Our role is to make sure our Members are connected to what they need to do their jobs as efficiently as possible. So we’re always considering new preferred suppliers to adapt to new technology — this doesn’t just mean parts suppliers, but also training providers to support the changing industry. Global supply chain disruption has affected every corner of the industry. How has Capricorn responded to ensure its members maintain access to the parts and services they need? Our business model is about having the right partners and preferred suppliers for our members. We work closely with these suppliers and partners, including new ones to ensure they have insights into our members and their challenges, so we can adapt and evolve as we need to.

Capricorn’s strength lies in its cooperative model, serving both small independents and larger businesses. How do you balance the needs of such a diverse membership base, sometimes with competing priorities? Being a cooperative means we’re supporting all our members, regardless of their business size. There are still a lot of similarities between small independents and the large workshops. They both expect Capricorn to meet their needs, deliver value and be as efficient and effective as possible. They both want the parts and services they need on time, so they can get the cars back out on the roads as quickly as they can — so in that respect their interests align. What feedback do you hear most often from members, and how does it shape the services and initiatives you roll out? One of my favourite bits of my role is meeting and hearing from our members, whether this be when I visit a workshop, via our field team, or through our research. We have an extremely strong Net Promoter score, meaning our members are advocates for what we do, and the benefits we provide. It’s something we continue to monitor, and are very proud of. Feedback from members is critical to how we work and what we prioritise. One ongoing challenge we’re hearing about is the skills shortage and work-load challenges of being a small-business owner. This is an area of focus for us, and one we’re supporting with increasing advocacy efforts. I’m so proud of the State of the Nation report, which we produce every year, it’s great to have the data from the industry, celebrating all the great things happening and highlighting key challenges. Sustainability is becoming a hot topic for the automotive trade. How is Capricorn approaching this challenge — both in terms of environmental responsibility and ensuring long-term business resilience for members? Sustainability and resilience go hand in hand and are really important topics. I’m really proud that Capricorn has recently launched our second Environmental, Sustainability and Governance (ESG) report, which covers what we’re doing in this area. Ultimately, we see operating in a sustainable and resilient way good business. Minimising our consumption of resources means we can return value to our members. A big part of our business is having the right preferred suppliers, which we do, which helps our members operate sustainably. Looking ahead, where do you see the most exciting growth opportunities for Capricorn Society? Are there new services, industries, or geographic regions that hold potential? While we have been operating for 50 years, we still see a strong opportunity for growth in member numbers. Last year, we had a record number of new members joining the cooperative, and we will continue to welcome anyone working on an engine, no matter what industry they’re in, to join Capricorn. We’re also looking at what services we can provide to make it easier to run a business. One in particular I’m really looking forward to launching is our tech store, which will

CAPRICORN SOCIETY FOCUS offer members targeted technology for the automotive aftermarket to address a variety of needs including the important issue of cyber security. When you look back at your time with Capricorn so far, what stands out as a moment or achievement you are particularly proud of — either personally or for the organisation as a whole? I am really proud to be announcing the $20million trade rebate in my first year of Group CEO — I am so passionate about ensuring our members see value in their membership, and this is a really tangible example of this. The other thing I am very proud of is being a part of the decision to increase the number of reward points which were returned to members quite a few years ago. Again, this increase in value is something that members still see the benefit of today. When making tough calls, do you lean more on instinct, data, or member feedback? I use all of those things when making a decision. I like to think of being data-informed, not data-led, using the data to inform the decision, not to make the decision. Member feedback is also critical; however we need to ensure the feedback is representative of a group of members, not just a singular view. I also rely on my experience and expertise over the course of my career. Ultimately, I make decisions based on the best interests of the cooperative, and while this sometimes may be challenging personally, I try to live by our values

of courage and trust. And that sometimes means making the tough decisions, which are in the best interest of our community. Beyond the financials, how do you personally define success for Capricorn? I look at our retention rates, how successful our members are and what they say about their Capricorn membership — are they advocates for us, are they enjoying being a part of our cooperative because that’s the biggest determinant of our success as an organisation, and more importantly, we hope their success. If there was one value you hope every member would say is reflected in how you lead, what would it be? Courage — the industry is undergoing transformation that does require us to continue to adapt and evolve. The way in which we operate and work, the way we’ve done things will not necessarily set us up for success in the future, and so continuing to adapt and evolve and making those courageous decisions so that we continue to be successful. Looking ahead, what legacy do you hope to leave when you eventually hand over the reins? That our cooperative and community is better off for my time in leadership. That I can say that during my time at Capricorn I improved the organisation for the benefit of our community and in

Donovan Le Roux named Capricorn’s Rising Star for New Zealand FROM ASPIRING LAWYER TO DIESEL DIAGNOSTICS EXPERT, DONOVAN LE ROUX IS CARVING A PATH IN NEW ZEALAND’S AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY THAT BLENDS TECHNICAL SKILL WITH INITIATIVE AND LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL

L

e Roux was named the New Zealand Region Winner in Capricorn’s 2025 Rising Stars Awards, an accolade recognising apprentices who demonstrate outstanding skill, initiative, and commitment to the trade. His journey into automotive began with a love for cars inherited from his grandfather, a racecar driver. That early interest led him to exchange textbooks for toolboxes, and he has remained dedicated to the trade ever since. Currently an apprentice at Parkway Motors in Rosedale, Auckland, Le Roux handles a wide range of technical work. His responsibilities include engine swaps, camshaft replacements, and major diagnostic projects. At Cummins Diesel, he rebuilt a 15-litre ISX-15 truck engine solo, a task that demonstrates both skill and confidence in handling complex diesel systems. Le Roux’s contribution extends beyond technical expertise. He has helped bring new

clients into his workshop, including a major fleet account, and is recognised for his initiative, communication skills, and leadership potential. Outside work, he is building a high-performance turbocharged Honda Civic, highlighting his passion for performance engineering. “I believe success in this trade isn’t just about turning spanners, it’s about communication, trust, and delivering quality under pressure,” Le Roux said. “Being recognised by Capricorn and the sponsors means a lot. It shows that taking initiative and backing yourself really matters.” His recognition reflects broader trends in New Zealand’s automotive industry. Capricorn’s 2025 State of the Nation Report notes that 80% of workshops plan to grow or improve profitability, and apprentice employment is increasing. These trends signal a commitment from the sector to develop the next generation of skilled workers. Capricorn Group CEO Brad Gannon

challenging times their Capricorn membership was valuable and meant a lot to them. But it’s early days, I’ve only been in the role for nine months, and I’ve got a lot I want to achieve for our members and community. Finally, drawing on your journey from law and governance through to leading Capricorn, what advice would you offer to young professionals or workshop owners who aspire to leadership roles — whether within the automotive trade or in business more broadly? Be passionate, be curious and continue to reflect on what you do. Those people who step forward and genuinely try to make a difference really stand out, and you’ll find people are more than willing to offer their support and advice if you’re willing to listen and learn.

Brad Gannon, Capricorn Group CEO

emphasised Le Roux’s qualities as representative of the industry’s future. “Donovan exemplifies the qualities the Rising Stars Awards were created to celebrate,” Gannon said. “Donovan’s technical skill, leadership mindset, and passion for the trade are exactly what the industry needs. He’s not just learning the ropes, he’s setting the pace.” The Rising Stars Awards are supported by Castrol, Repco, and The Workshop Whisperer and recognise outstanding apprentices across Australia and New Zealand. The awards celebrate individuals who go above and beyond, take initiative, and show a genuine commitment to the long-term development of the automotive industry. Le Roux’s story highlights the combination of skill, initiative, and enthusiasm that the sector is seeking, illustrating how apprentices can make an immediate impact while also preparing for future leadership roles in workshops nationwide.

New model just landed: Automaster AM-6246TD A PRACTICAL TWO-POST HOIST, THE AM-6246TD HAS CONTROL BOXES MOUNTED ON EACH SIDE OF THE HOIST AND HAS BEEN DESIGNED WITH FLEXIBILITY, SAFETY, AND EASE OF USE IN MIND, WITH THE OPTION TO POSITION COLUMNS EITHER SYMMETRICALLY OR ASYMMETRICALLY

T

he NEW AM-6246TD uses twin threebutton control boxes — one on each post — so technicians can operate the lift from either side. The controls are straightforward: ‘Up’ to raise, ‘Lock’ to secure, and ‘Down’ to lower. Importantly, there is no timer delay; the hoist lowers immediately without rising first. This small feature translates into faster, smoother operation over the course of a working day. One of the strengths of the AM-6246TD is its adaptability to different workshop layouts, with flexible installation options that allow the columns to be installed either asymmetrically or symmetrically. Asymmetrical configuration provides better access for vehicles by allowing wider door openings. Symmetrical configuration offers greater drive-through clearance between the posts, which can be useful when handling larger vehicles. The hoist can also be set up in either a narrow or wide configuration, making it suitable for workshops with space restrictions. With the motor mounted high on the front of the column, the

unit can be positioned close to walls without losing functionality. A choice of high or low top cross-bar positions allows installers to match the hoist to the available roof height. The AM-6246TD is built for strength and long-term use. Reinforced double-S bend columns provide rigidity, while full-length hydraulic cylinders, balance cables, and premium-grade components — including pumps, seals, cylinders, and motors — help ensure reliable performance. Installation requires a minimum 100mm concrete floor, aligning with standard workshop flooring. Rubber pads on the arms protect vehicle doors, and the ultra-low arm design helps with lifting a wider variety of vehicles, from low passenger cars to SUVs and light commercial utes. The AM-6246TD is designed with workshop efficiency in mind, featuring three-stage telescoping front arms and two-stage rear arms for versatile lifting points, along with adjustable screw-up feet and four 80 mm extensions with U-adapters to accommodate different vehicle

types. Each arm includes a built-in tool tray for easy access to small items, while a safety shut-down bar runs across the top of the hoist for added protection. Free 4x4 adapters are supplied as standard, and with a lowering time of just 30–40 seconds, the hoist keeps workflow smooth and efficient. Safety compliance is an essential factor for any hoist. The AM-6246TD meets European CE standards and holds Australian WorkCover registration, giving workshops assurance that the equipment aligns with recognised safety benchmarks. Automaster also provides local support, including a full inventory of spare parts for all equipment sold and the hoist is backed by a three-year warranty. For detailed information on the AM6246TD, see automaster.co.nz, or call Automaster on 0800 214 604.

Optional jacking beams enhance performance and safety, making them suitable for a variety of applications. These models provide innovative, space-saving solutions ideal for urban environments.

AUTOMASTER BRANDED HOISTS Automaster’s own branded hoists provide excellent value and a broad range of lifting solutions, covering single-post, two-post, fourpost, and scissor lifts, as well as mobile truck columns.

With an automatic electric locking system, dual hydraulic cylinders, and protective rubber pads, these hoists are designed for durability and ease of use, backed by a three-year warranty. The AM-6246R Clearfloor Design (4500kg) offers both asymmetric and symmetric column setups, maximising either door access or drive-through width. Equipped with a safety shut-off and CE certification, it requires 100mm of concrete for installation and comes with a three-year warranty.

FOUR-POST LIFT MODELS In the four-post category, the AM-6745L Four Post Service Hoist provides a 4200kg capacity, suitable for low-profile cars and light commercials. It includes automatic locking mechanisms and emergency cable breakage locks. Protecting your most valuable tools: Your body EVERY MONTH, THOUSANDS OF MECHANICS AND AUTO ELECTRICIANS ACROSS NEW ZEALAND SPEND LONG HOURS ON THEIR FEET, LEANING OVER BONNETS, CRAWLING UNDER VEHICLES, AND TWISTING INTO AWKWARD SPACES; IT’S REWARDING WORK, BUT IT ALSO TAKES A TOLL ON THE BODY

W

hile tools and equipment can be replaced, your health cannot. Looking after your posture, wearing the right footwear, and being mindful of how you move on the job are some of the most important investments you can make in your career longevity.

WHY FOOTWEAR MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK Mechanics can spend eight to ten hours a day standing on hard concrete floors. That constant pressure on your feet doesn’t just cause fatigue; it can create long-term issues like plantar fasciitis, lower-back pain, and even knee and hip problems. Proper workshop footwear should tick three key boxes: • Support: Choose boots or shoes that provide arch support and cushioning. A flat-soled pair of cheap steel caps may meet safety standards, but without support your feet and joints will pay the price. • Safety: Oil, coolant, and other fluids make workshop floors slippery. Non-slip soles are essential, along with toe protection. Steel or composite caps are still the industry standard. • Fit and Comfort: Don’t put up with uncomfortable boots. Ill-fitting footwear causes blisters, calluses, and altered walking patterns that put strain on joints. Consider footwear part of your toolkit. Just like you wouldn’t skimp on a torque wrench, don’t skimp on the boots that carry you through the day. And remember—replace them

30

Auto Channel Issue #84 October 2025

regularly. Worn-down soles and broken insoles can undo all the benefits of a good pair.

THE POSTURE PROBLEM We’ve all seen it: a mechanic bent over an engine bay for hours, or lying awkwardly on a creeper under a car. These positions put enormous strain on your back, shoulders, and neck. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and, in some cases, forced early retirement from the trade. Key posture tips for the workshop include: • Raise the vehicle when possible. Don’t bend unnecessarily if a hoist can bring the work to a more comfortable height. • Use creepers and stools. They might feel like a luxury, but they prevent repetitive strain. • Engage your core. Keeping your abdominal muscles active while lifting or bending helps protect your spine. • Avoid twisting. Pivot with your feet rather than twisting at the waist when moving parts or tools. It’s worth remembering that poor posture isn’t just about comfort in the moment — it’s about avoiding the long-term injuries that can take you out of the workshop entirely.

STRENGTH, STRETCHING, AND RECOVERY Mechanics are athletes in their own right. The constant lifting, pushing, and reaching puts the body under similar demands as a physically active sport. And just like athletes, mechanics benefit from conditioning and recovery.

• Stretching: A simple five-minute stretching routine at the start and end of the day can help keep muscles flexible. Focus on hamstrings, shoulders, and lower back—these areas often bear the brunt of workshop work. • Strength training: Building strength in your core, legs, and upper body can make daily tasks easier and safer. Even two short strength sessions a week can make a noticeable difference. • Recovery: Don’t ignore aches. Regular massage, physio check-ups, or even just rolling out sore muscles with a foam roller can prevent small niggles from becoming chronic injuries.

LOOKING AFTER THE LONG GAME One of the challenges of the trade is that wear and tear doesn’t always show up straight away. A sore back at 25 might be brushed off, but at 45 it can become a serious limitation. Thinking long-term is key: • Rotate tasks when possible. Spending all day in one posture accelerates fatigue. • Use mechanical aids. Engine cranes, hoists, and lifting devices exist for a reason—protect your back by letting them do the heavy lifting. • Take micro-breaks. Even a 30-second pause to straighten up, roll your shoulders, or walk a few steps can reset your body.

THE BOTTOM LINE Cars may be getting smarter, but they still need skilled, hands-on people to keep them running. Mechanics, technicians, and auto electricians are the backbone of the automotive industry, but too many suffer from avoidable injuries and chronic pain. By investing in proper footwear, maintaining good posture, and looking after your body like the vital tool it is, you’re investing in a longer, healthier, and more sustainable career. Your spanners, sockets, and diagnostic gear are important — but your body is the most valuable asset in the workshop. Look after it, and it will keep you moving for decades to come.

New AS-PL alternator A01188S joins Standard line for popular Audi models AFTERMARKET PARTS SUPPLIER AS-PL HAS ADDED A NEW ALTERNATOR TO ITS STANDARD PRODUCT LINE: MODEL A01188S — THE UNIT FITS SEVERAL AUDI MODELS, INCLUDING THE A4 B8, A5 COUPE, A5 SPORTBACK, AND THE FIRSTGENERATION Q5

T

he addition further broadens the choices in the AS brand portfolio, offering workshops and vehicle owners more options for familiar European applications. The A01188S is part of the Standard line, designed to provide reliable performance at more accessible pricing. It’s suited for Audi enthusiasts or repairers needing replacement alternators for the A4 B8, A5 variants, or Q5 models — common vehicles in many workshops. Key features include: • Application-specific fitment for Audi A4 B8, A5 Coupe, A5 Sportback, and first-generation Q5 • Built-to-Standard line tolerances and performance levels from AS-PL • Quality assurance via full testing on specialist equipment • Backed by the AS brand’s reputation in the European aftermarket, supported by wide product range and adherence to ISO standards

For workshops in New Zealand, having alernator units that match common European models matters. A reliable, affordable Standardline alternator can fill gaps where premium or OEM units may be costly or delayed. The A01188S offers a balance of cost and performance, making it useful for daily repairs, part replacements, or fleet work. AS-PL, founded in 1992 in Gdańsk, Poland, specialises in electrical components — alternators, starters, parts for passenger cars, lorries, agricultural and marine vehicles, and more. The company currently offers nearly 30,000 product lines representing almost 1,000,000 reference numbers, under its Standard and Premium ranges. All AS-PL alternators and starters undergo strict testing using specialist machinery; test results are included with the product packaging. The firm holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, which governs its quality

Navigating New Zealand’s new WOF rule on TPMS warning lights SOLUTIONS FROM REPCO TO KEEP YOU COVERED

R

ecently, an amendment to section 10-1 of the Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM) means Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspections now include stricter enforcement of Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning light compliance. This important regulatory update means vehicles must not display active TPMS warning lights to pass their WOF inspections, ensuring safer road conditions through proper tyre pressure monitoring.

WHAT’S CHANGING WITH THE WOF AND TPMS? Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems are designed to alert drivers when tyre pressure falls outside the recommended range, helping prevent accidents caused by underinflated tyres. The new WOF rule mandates that any vehicle presenting an illuminated TPMS warning light at the time of inspection will fail the inspection. This change reflects New Zealand’s commitment to vehicle safety and environmental responsibility by promoting proper tyre maintenance and fuel efficiency.

Auto Channel Issue #84 October 2025

COMMON TPMS ISSUES AFFECTING A VEHICLE’S WOF • Battery failure in sensor units leading to constant warning lights • Sensor damage or wear due to road debris, corrosion, or improper repair techniques • Sensor incompatibility after tyre replacement or repair • Removal of TPMS Sensor prior to rule change • System recalibration needed following tyre service or rotation

management system, ensuring processes meet customer and technical requirements and are repeatable in production. AS-PL’s size and scope — near a million reference numbers, wide range across vehicles and markets — lend scale and supply reliability, and the company’s ISO 9001:2015 certification confirms ongoing quality control, to improve confidence when selecting aftermarket electrical components The A01188S alternator is now available through AS-PL’s distribution network in New Zealand. Workshops can source it through their usual parts providers. As with other AS-PL products, it’ll come in Standard line packaging with test verification, plus technical details for fitment.

Repco’s range of tools help service professionals program and activate replacement sensors perfectly matched to the vehicle’s system. • Diagnostic Equipment: Quickly identify faulty sensors or system errors before WOF inspection. Repco products are backed by expert technical support from both Repco Equipment Specialists and NZ-based engineers, making Repco a trusted partner. TA2: A new era for V8 touring cars in NZ THE GAP THAT’S BEEN LEFT IN NEW ZEALAND’S MOTORSPORT LANDSCAPE FOR A CONTROLLED V8 SALOON CAR CATEGORY SINCE THE END OF THE NZV8S AND V8 SUPERTOURERS IS ABOUT TO BE FILLED BY THE ARRIVAL IN LATE-OCTOBER OF THE TA2 NZ CHAMPIONSHIP; WE SPEAK ABOUT THE UPCOMING SEASON WITH CATEGORY MANAGER, GARY LATHROPE Auto Channel: What was the driving force behind bringing TA2 to New Zealand? Gary Lathrope: Since the demise of both the NZV8s and V8 SuperTourers, New Zealand has been missing a totally controlled V8 saloon car category. When we first met Peter Robinson [the mastermind behind the development of TA2 in Australia] seven years ago, it was a no-brainer that the TA2 concept and car was exactly what we needed here in NZ; a cost-effective, simple design with plenty of horsepower, based on very cool modern-day American Muscle Cars — it ticked all the boxes for us. For fans hearing about TA2 for the first time, how would you describe the spirit and style of this category? They should expect raw V8 quality and close racing, second to none! The TA2 Championship is designed to cater for both aspiring young drivers wanting to take the next step up from the likes of TR86 and Formula Ford to the more mature drivers who just have a total affection for V8 muscle car racing; the category has a great feel of camaraderie to it with a lot of knowledge sharing, banter and fun in the pits, then when the racing starts the gloves come off for some clean and fierce competition on track, everyone wants to win no matter how old or experienced they are. How do TA2 cars differ from other series in New Zealand in terms of performance, sound, and spectacle? The TA2 is a spaceframe custom-built race car — not a road car trying to be a race car. These cars are used in various Trans-Am–based racing series, such as the TA2 Muscle Car Series, and utilise a controlled platform with a spaceframe chassis, a controlled V8 engine package, and interchangeable bodyshells that can resemble a Ford Mustang, Chevrolet

Camaro, or Dodge Challenger. The sound of a TA2 car is unique, more like a NASCAR, and when you have 20 of them coming along the straight at full-noise there’s nothing quite like it here in NZ. As a spectacle, with the cars on a high-profile slick tyre, they move around more and look pretty spectacular with some decent oversteer at times. Who can we expect on the grid? Our line-up of drivers features quite a variety of age groups, with the youngest driver being 16, and our oldest being in their late 60s. The category is also attracting a number of wellknown dirt competitors from ex-NZ Sprint Car and Super Saloon Champions, along with some well-known, highly experienced circuit racers, making up a really good mixture of drivers. We also have some strong interest from Australia, with some very well-known up-and-coming drivers expressing their desire to come and take on the Kiwis. What can fans look forward to trackside at the opening round in October? The opening round on 30 October to 2 November is going to be a very cool event, with the final round of the Australian GT World Challenge and GT4 Series with over 45 cars coming from Australia, and for TA2NZ we just can’t wait to showcase an amazing grid of around 20 cars for the first ever TA2 Championship Round, we’re all so excited as its V8 motorsport history in the making! Finally, what’s the one thing you’d say to a motorsport fan who’s never been to TA2? Quite simply, if you like the sound of real V8s and you like door-to-door racing with a bit of rubbing, then you need to get along to round one and experience the revolution that has taken Australian motorsport by storm — it’s now right here in New Zealand for you to enjoy! 180 cars Australasian-wide can’t be wrong!!
