E
die’s sixteen-year tenure as a scientist at Harbor Branch elevated her to the pinnacle of the study of bioluminescence, the light chemically produced by many ocean organisms. Working with some of the world’s finest oceanographic engineers at Harbor Branch, Edie helped to invent new submersible instrumentation and equipment, enabling deep-sea observations deemed unimaginable just a couple decades earlier. “I’ve always loved gadgets,” Edie joked. “This was a lot of fun.”

O
ne of the unique devices Edie conceived of and developed was an advanced bathyphotometer known as the HIDEX, which became the US Navy’s standard instrumentation for measuring bioluminescence in the ocean—important information for keeping submarines hidden from above. Edie also built LoLAR, an ultrasensitive deep-sea light meter that measures light in the deep ocean, both dim down-welling sunlight and bioluminescence—important determinants of animal distribution patterns. This phenomenon is used by animals to communicate, find prey and avoid predation in the dark. “Bioluminescence is extremely common in the deep depths of the ocean,” said Edie. And believe it or not, it’s “snowing” down there. “Tiny flakes of animal poop and decaying tissue known as ‘marine snow’ falls from surface waters to the bottom producing a spectacular array of bioluminescence. When you shine a light out the window of a submersible, the marine snow glows. If you flash a strobe, it becomes Van Gogh’s Starry Night: everything lights up…but soon fades out.” The phenomenon of marine snow still baffles scientists. Many speculate that the bacteria in the fecal pellets glow to attract predators, allowing the bacteria to remain in the open ocean instead of sinking to the bottom. Another great mystery is the reason for the elaborate light shows put on by certain deep-sea jellyfish like Atolla wyvillei. These are animals without eyes, so it’s thought their brilliant displays are used as a kind of “scream for help” when they are attacked. All that light reveals their attacker to larger predators that may attack their attacker and thereby afford an opportunity for escape. Edie reasoned she could copy this approach to create an optical lure. After inventing an “electronic jellyfish” to attract predators for those great “close-ups,” Edie “wanted to see in the dark with no lights on in the submersible.” So, she invented a camera system known as the “Eye-Inthe-Sea,” which uses a red light that deep sea animals can’t see. Let’s just say the results were amazing…and they didn’t take long. Not even a minute and a half after pressing the “on” button, Edie’s state-of-the-art camera recorded a six-foot long squid! And not your ordinary six-foot squid either; it was a previously unknown species. Since that expedition, the Eye-In-the-Sea and similar equipment have made other spectacular sightings. Years later, while off the coast of Japan, Edie captured the first video ever recorded of a giant squid in its natural habitat. “That was a fantastic thrill,” said Edie. Edie has spent hundreds of hours in the deep sea, much of it in submersibles like the Johnson Sea Links, but also using a WASP diving suit. Of course, this kind of thing involves taking risks. Was there ever a close call? “Once when I was in a Deep Rover someone mistakenly opened a saltwater intake valve, but I was rescued quickly. I was shaken up a bit but got back on my horse,” Edie joked. In 2005, after sixteen years, Edie was looking to move on. “It was an incredible experience, but Harbor Branch was closing down its submersible program. So, I was looking for a new opportunity.” Then came the “wake up call.” “Two reports had just come out from the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and the Pew Oceans Commission on the state of the oceans. They contained startling information detailing threats to the oceans. I was determined to make a difference.” Edie then founded the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) in 2005 “to lead the effort of translating complex scientific issues into technological solutions, and to foster greater understanding of ocean life as a means to better, more informed stewardship.”

Apparently, Providence was on her side, too. “Not long after, I received a MacArthur Fellowship.” The prestigious grant, commonly but unofficially known as the “Genius Grant,” would sustain ORCA for the next several years. “Those two reports called for advanced monitoring to protect and restore ecosystems. I had spent a great deal of time with some of the world’s finest oceanographic engineers. I knew I could help.” ORCA quickly became the first technology-based marine conservation organization in the United States. “Most pollution in aquatic ecosystems comes from the land, so our team decided to focus on the 156-mile-long Indian River Lagoon—right in our very own backyard. The lagoon was for many years a spectacular showcase of marine diversity, but it had become very polluted. We were determined bring this wonderful ecosystem back to what it was not so many years ago.” Edie wanted to explore new ways of doing things. “We wanted to bring scientists and everyday people together. So, we developed our citizen science program, which aims to educate and engage all members of the community, regardless of age, gender, education, race, or religion, to find solutions to restore the health of the Indian River Lagoon.” Come back next month for Part Three to learn how Edie and ORCA are restoring the health of our beloved Indian River—and how YOU can play a part. Angel Run A True Story of Boxes and a Thanksgiving Blessing by Pam Proctor
F
ifteen years ago this month, 450 gift boxes from Indian River County reached U.S. soldiers and marines in Iraq. Since then, U.S. troops around the world have received tens of thousands of boxes from local residents through the Military Moms Prayer Group’s Holidays for Heroes program, which runs through December 15. Each box has a story, and the one I’m about to share will give a glimpse of how God worked through a particular group of boxes that traveled from Vero Beach to Iraq over one Thanksgiving holiday. In November 2006, a few months after the Military Moms Prayer Group was founded, member Linda Colontrelle – whose son Danny, a West Point graduate, was stationed with the Army in Baghdad – awoke one night with a vision. “We need to send packages to the troops,” she told her husband John. Linda recruited fellow Military Moms and friends, and we packed and shipped 450 boxes to Danny and other servicemen. About 50 boxes went to Marine Corps infantry Major Trane McCloud, son of Roma Anderson, and another 50 went to the “Raiders,” a unit of C-130 pilots that my son Mike was joining. Trane’s unit was stationed at Haditha, northwest of Baghdad on the Euphrates River, while the Raiders were about 50 miles south of Trane’s unit. A few weeks before the packages were mailed, Trane sent his mom a photo of himself by Haditha Dam, along with this email: “Sorry I haven’t written more. I’ve been busy, and most things I do besides eat and sleep I can’t talk about. I can say the Marines are doing phenomenal things every day. Thanks for all your support to me, my family, and our troops. Semper Fi, Trane.” That was the last email Roma received from her son. On December 4, 2006, Trane was killed in a helicopter accident at Haditha Dam – the very spot where he had posed so proudly for a picture. Meanwhile, just after Trane died, our gift boxes reached the C-130 pilots, the Raiders. The commanding officer was impressed and requested names of moms involved in the outreach so that his pilots could thank them. We sent a list, leading with Roma Anderson and mentioning that her son, Major Trane McCloud, had just died at Haditha Dam. What we didn’t know was that God had special plans for that list with Trane’s name on it. On December 10, the Military Moms received this email from a Marine Corps captain who was a pilot with the Raiders: “UNCLASSIFIED: I want to thank you … for your thoughtfulness and 8

selflessness you have shown with these gifts you are sending us ... To be given this clear reminder that those at home care about our morale and well-being means more than you know. “Also, I want to tell you that I flew Maj. McCloud and others who died in the helicopter crash out of Iraq into Kuwait for their trip home yesterday. There is so much I could say about this. I don’t even know how to put it into words. My heart hurts for every family member of every fallen patriot that I send home in this way. I pray for them. May God bless you and your friends.”

A vintage car buff, Trane picked this 1959 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner retractable hardtop to drive his family around in safety. The car had seatbelts for everyone, including his youngest, Meghan, who was not yet two years old. “The best family ride was to Krispy Kreme,” says his mom Roma, pictured below right with Trane and kids. “Everyone there knew them and loved the car.”

o this C-130 captain, who requested anonymity, flew Trane’s body to Kuwait in what the military calls an “Angel Run,” and we forwarded his email to Roma. This email was the first news she had that Trane’s body was on its way home. The captain’s message gave her a few brief moments of peace on a difficult road that she is still travelling to this day. “I know that if Trane had a choice, he’d do it again because he cared so much for his country,” says Roma. Trane McCloud was posthumously promoted to lieutenant colonel and buried in Arlington National Cemetery – with Roma, his wife Maggie and his three young children looking on. Following his full military funeral, an eagle soared over his flag-draped coffin, just as the sun burst through the clouds. “This experience has drawn me into a closer relationship with God,” says Roma. “Whenever I’m in a crowd of people, I try to see them through God’s eyes of love. “There’s No Business Like Show Business” Riverside Theatre Returns! by Barbara Yoresh
I
rving Berlin composed many show tunes, and among them was a number that perfectly embodies the sensibilities of stage performers past and present. “There’s No Business Like Show Business” wasn’t just an Ethel Merman-belted homage to those who “tread the boards” sung in the 1946 musical Annie Get Your Gun, but was also a mission statement by entertainers. When the worldwide pandemic erupted in 2020, it required Riverside Theatre’s stages to go dark during the crescendo of its 2019-2020 season. Cancelling the Mainstage performance of the brilliant musical comedy La Cage Aux Folles was a bitter decision, but safety and health concerns allowed no other choice. Since that sad decision there have been no professional theatrical shows on the Stark or Waxlax stages. Mercifully, with effective vaccines and other safety precautions, there is a re-awakening to those soul-stirring joys of life that differentiate what it means to fully “live” versus merely “exist.” Theatre is back! And if ever there were a balm for bruised and hungry souls, then perhaps Centers for Disease Control officials would agree that there is no better medicine than to partake of live performance. Indeed, there is “no business like show business” – for performers and audiences alike. Cancelling what had been a stellar, successful season was disappointing and costly. The financial ramification of lost revenue was daunting, to say the least. Riverside Theatre employs approximately 100 people and has about a $10 million annual operating budget. But thanks to the community at large and the unfailing generosity of Riverside Theatre supporters, the previously-darkened stages of Riverside Theatre will once again sparkle with bright lights and superb performances. Yes, Riverside Theatre’s new season commences in January, only days after the New Year arrives. Applause, laughter and cheers will once again reverberate within the theatre. It can’t come too soon. Riverside Theatre officials are excited by the prospect of a new season, and for all their enthusiasm (and lots of hard work to make it all happen), there is also an equal dose of gratitude to those theatre lovers whose loving and lavish financial support assured the solvency and continuum of the theatre’s day-to-day operations. Without them, the theatre may not have survived. Riverside Theatre employees retained their jobs throughout the protracted Covid-19 hiatus, and

that was no small feat – especially considering that annual fund-raising galas and other special events had to be cancelled because of the pandemic. If there is anyone who knows how much that largesse meant, it may be Riverside Theatre Development Director Kate Gill who works closely with theatre supporters. Ms. Gill noted everyone at Riverside is “giddy grateful” for what she termed the “stunning response” to the theatre’s needs during the pandemic. “It’s an exceptional community and we’re lucky to be in it. It’s completely humbling and it’s honest altruism,” Ms. Gill said of those who gave so generously when there were not shows, galas or other events for them to enjoy in return. While the theatre’s most generous supporters gave exceptional sums to keep the theatre viable during the shut-down, Ms. Gill said, “Many folks truly touched my heart with their smaller gifts of support. Everyone gave what they could.” So the show must – and will – go on. Because truly, there is no business like show business!

W
hile not an avid golfer, I began my hospitality career with Doral Resorts of Florida in 1992 and had the benefit of learning how to play on Doral Country Club’s Blue Monster golf course by Jim McLean who had just set up shop in Miami. The Blue Monster remains to this day, as do many famous golf courses and resorts in the USA that you probably know of, but in this month’s article I’m going to focus on a different way of experiencing some of the famous courses around the world, as well as some golf resorts that are off the beaten path, but well worth a visit. I’ll begin with a trip to Tuscany. One of the most romantic golf resorts I’ve experienced is Poggio de Medici Golf Resort and Spa just outside the medieval town of Scarperia. When I visited, the resort was newly-built on a course already created a decade earlier featured on the European PGA Tour with our hotel company set to manage. You might think describing a golf resort as romantic odd, but when approaching the boutique 70-room resort through a field of sunflowers surrounded by the rolling hills of Tuscany to an old farmhouse in the Mugello Valley, you will understand. The resort would be perfect for a honeymoon and not even touch the course, but that would be a shame since it is both challenging and beautiful. One of the oldest and most remote golf resorts in Western Canada, on the larger side with 400+ rooms and suites, is Fairmont’s Jasper Park Lodge. The 4-hour drive from Banff may seem long, but it is spectacular. With some of the greatest scenery in the Canadian Rockies, the resort is worth the trip. Not only does it boast a worldclass rustic lodge one expects in this part of the world, an extensive spa and pool, and activities on a pristine lake, but it also has one of the top golf courses in Canada that many people don’t think of because of its remote location. If you want to get away from the crowds, this is one resort you’ll want to make plans for following the Spring thaw! Why wait until Spring to golf, though? Make plans now to head south…way south to Argentina. You’ll want to refresh yourself when first arriving in Buenos Aires by staying at one of several fantastic hotels. My favorite is the Sofitel in the Recoleta District. From there, you can head to the Olivos Golf Club for a round arranged by the concierge, since it is one of the country’s best courses. Once you have gotten over the jet lag and experienced this vibrant city, head to beautiful Patagonia to the Llao Llao Golf Resort. You’ll experience not only another of Argentina’s top golf courses, but some of the most beautiful scenery and five-star accommodations in the country. This boutique resort is as remote as they come to help you unwind and forget about any problems up North! Head back to Buenos Aires for your flight home, but before heading home, skip the city all together and head to Sofitel Cardales, a resort just outside Buenos Aires with full-service spa, tennis, pool, other activities, and of course great golf. A perfect Argentine golf getaway combining city and country is closer than you think! inally, for a journey to experience some of the finest and most famous golf courses in the world without the hassle of traveling from town-to-town, a sailing on Azamara Luxury Cruises golf experience is a must. In a word: S0S (“Same old…uh…stuff”) his review can be summed up in two words: James Bond. That says it all. That’s all that matters. As I began writing the review, I thought about researching more background data: actors, directors, scenery, violence, travels to foreign lands, or casting the right proportioning of whites, blacks, males, females, bullets, bombs and car crashes. After all, it is a James Bond movie. Was there anything new, unique, exciting or daring? Probably. I’m still mulling that over. It’s tough to answer when the question asks for anything “new.” What about the plot? That’s an important item in creating storylines. Plot? What plot? There was no plot. Somewhere in the dialogue, the actors posed as allies and/or villains, making sure there are at least two gorgeous, gun-toting women among the pack. But the basis for the story was as clear as a London fog. In truth, the movie was a carbon copy of other James Bond movies – just an excuse for blasting more sprays from guns, bombs, crashes, and violence in general. For film buffs who have always loved James Bond, they will enjoy this movie about as much as they enjoyed the 24 previous Bond movies because it is close to a carbon copy, offering lines, scenes, characters and French horns for background music so we can pretend we saw a new movie. Was it done well? Actually, yes. About as good as any other. But I’d suggest future Bond releases be titled by the numbers – 26th Edition, 27th Edition, 28th Edition, and so forth. As Bond actors are concerned, Sean Connery still remains in a world by himself.

Some recipes are by guess and by golly – no measurements, just knowing what ingredients to use and putting it all together. INGREDIENTS 2 heads Belgian endive* Small container whipped cream cheese spread Approximately 1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese, to taste Chopped apples Chopped walnuts
INSTRUCTIONS • Remove any outer leaves from the endive that are ripped or bruised and cut off the bottom. • Mix the cream cheese and blue cheese. Remember, blue cheese is strong. You don’t want it to overpower the other ingredients. • Top with equal amounts of apples and walnuts. * Fresh Market usually carries endive. You get 10-16 leaves per medium head. This recipe lends itself to improvising with ingredients. Try pears, dried cranberries, pecans or pistachios.

INGREDIENTS 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1 egg white 2 1/2 tablespoons water 8 cups pecan halves INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 275°F. • In a medium bowl, combine first 8 ingredients; stir well. • Add pecans and stir until evenly coated. • Spread on a lightly greased foil-lined 10"x15” jellyroll pan. • Bake 50 to 55 minutes, stirring occasionally. • Remove from pan and cool on waxed paper. Store in airtight container.

The holidays are coming, and so are guests. I end up making the same appetizers, thinking each year I’ll find that delicious new simple something to serve…but it never happens. So, I’ve enlisted the help of friends and neighbors who have been kind enough to share their recipes.

Both the rumaki and sauce can be prepared in advance. Keep in mind cooking time is 60 minutes total. INGREDIENTS: 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup chili sauce 1 pound bacon (thin sliced) 2 cans whole water chestnuts
INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a cookie sheet with foil or parchment paper; set aside. • Combine brown sugar, mayo and chili sauce; set aside. • Cut each slice of bacon in thirds. Wrap water chestnut and pierce with toothpick to hold together. (You won’t use all the bacon.) • Place on cookie sheet and bake approximately 40 minutes, until bacon is crisped. • Pour the sauce over cooked water chestnuts and bake until bubbly, an additional 20 minutes. They’re VERY hot, be careful!

INGREDIENTS 1 brie round, 8 ounces, rind removed 24 frozen mini phyllo pastry shells 1/2 cup whole-berry cranberry sauce 1/3 cup roasted salted pistachios, chopped INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat oven to 400°F. • Cut brie into 24 small pieces. • Arrange phyllo shells on a rimmed baking sheet. Place 1 brie piece in each phyllo shell. • Top each shell with 1 teaspoon cranberry sauce and sprinkle evenly with pistachios. • Bake in preheated oven until cheese is melted and bubbly, about 6 minutes. Serve immediately.

OR Don‘t Believe Everything Software Reps Tell You
T
his article is for those who still use an AOL email account and are accessing that mail on an iPhone and/or iPad. A good friend has run into an issue so I assume others are, too. This is a very specific article from me because I know a lot of folks out there still have AOL email accounts and are using iPads and iPhones. Rather than get lots of calls I wrote this article. AOL is making a change to how you can receive email on an iPhone or iPad. For many, that change recently discontinued the ability to use the email app that comes with the iOS software. The work-around is going to Safari or another web browser app on the device and going to aol. com, then logging in that way. The other option they give you is to download and install their “new and improved” AOL app. My friend has been frustrated since everything worked as usual for her until the latest iOS updates came out. Then she could no longer get email the old way. AOL’s response? “We’ve been telling you you’ve had to change for a year.” I know my friend. She reads her emails, especially notices from AOL about changes or issues. She also knows how to tell if something is a phishing email – meaning fake hacking – designed to get you to provide private info that allows someone to hack into your identity, financials or

healthcare accounts. If you don’t know how to tell real email from phishing, send me a note and maybe I’ll make that next month’s article. Back to the topic at hand. My friend read all the emails and even went back and looked and there was nothing from AOL about the change. She knew she was stuck. She installed the AOL app on her iPhone but it couldn’t on her iPad because it was too old. After install, she finds she hates the app because it is small, looks completely different, and doesn’t let her navigate her mail as easily as the built-in email software did. Enter me. I decided to do some research and discovered that basically AOL went to two-factor authentication (you need to confirm you are really you, basically) on their apps and that third-party software, meaning non-AOL software, requires you to take a few extra steps to make their apps work with AOL mail. Basically, you now need to generate a special “app specific” password from within AOL that will allow other apps to work. Not for the faint of heart, though, because AOL also recommends you delete your account from the device and then reinstall it. When my friend talked to the AOL rep they told her that she would lose access to her AOL Notes and other things when she deleted the app from her phone. Normally deleting your email account
from your device does not delete any content from your actual email account, but it potentially can remove items from your iPhone Notes account. So always make sure you back things up before you remove local accounts to re-add them, and if you need to know how to migrate the Notes account shoot me an email. The fix? We moved her AOL Notes from inside her Apple Notes app to iCloud, deleted the AOL email account from Settings on her devices, re-added her AOL email account as a New Mail account, and all is working without using the AOL app she didn’t like. She’s happy and I’m happy she’s happy. hat’s the takeaway? Don’t believe everything a service rep at AOL or other provider tells you. Have a backup of your data just in case, and use Google or other search engine to look for solutions to your tech problems if you don’t have a friend like me. If you’ve got the problem, then someone else does, too, and there will be a solution out there!

WORDS Thanksgiving Contemplation

O
ften when you meet someone new the first question asked is, “What do you do?” Perhaps this question is designed to give quick information in hopes of finding common ground to continue the conversation. What would happen if instead you asked, “Who are you?” You aren’t what you do, after all. When you define yourself by what you do, you lose your authenticity. God created you to be unique and gifted in personal ways. Defining yourself by your work ethic can create a pattern that is hard to break. Being driven is demanding and stresses the real priorities in a person’s life – relationships. Those closest to you will always feel second in your race to achieve. What if the initial question when meeting someone new was, “What do you believe?” Would they answer about politics? Would they tell you about their faith in God? Would they look at you askance and walk away shaking their head? Even though you don’t share this information casually, your beliefs are foundational to the way you live. When you are true to them, you will feel less stress. When they get lost in the shuffle of the busy-ness of life, you will feel tension and worry. To live authentically, you must live according to what you believe. This is a key marker for the truly genuine. What do you believe? Is it based on experience and faith, or is it a hand-me-down given to you from another? If your beliefs have been handed down to you, have you taken the time to examine them? Imagine your beliefs are like garments owned by someone else and given to you to wear. Inspect them. Will they flow with your movements and let you feel free and energetic, or will the garment of belief restrict and confine? Is it the right size or so big that you trip over it regularly? If your beliefs were clothing, would they show others who you are or show them who raised you? Live what you believe, but first find out what that is. So many issues in the news lately would be lessened if each American sought his own belief system based on his own conscience. So often, identifying as a member of a group, a person can run headlong with information that was never inspected against his inner knowing. Perhaps he really does agree with the tenets that were presented. Sometimes,
however, he may find that portions of those tenets don’t ring true in his heart. “I am right, and you are wrong” becomes the mantra instead of “What is right and what is wrong?” Each individual must make that determination based on his own beliefs, not convictions that were handed to him by another. This Thanksgiving, when you bow your head and consider the many blessings you have, don’t allow the distractions of the holiday to pull you away from what is most important. These distractions can be fun. Food, football, and holiday sales are meant to be enjoyed, but when they override your consideration of this holiday’s true meaning, you lose an opportunity to connect with what is honest and good. These distractions can be serious. Politics, race relations, pandemic strategies are topics of interest, but when conversations become arguments, they can rob you of quality time with loved ones. In the battle of “who is right,” many are often left alone and resentful. Choose to love instead, especially when surrounded by those most important to you.

ecognize the abundance and blessings in your life. Connect with the God who provides and ask Him to be present at your gathering, whether it’s in person or over a phone call or Zoom camera. Be thankful, and suddenly you will know quiet and assurance that comes from authentic relationship. Live your priorities.

We offer praise to the Lord Jesus as a sacrifice that is pleasing to Him. During this season of giving thanks, there is no better time to offer praise to His Name. We have much to be thankful for. We need to count our blessings. The Bible says that “…in everything give thanks…” (1 Thess. 5:18). Let us thank the Lord Jesus for what He has done for us in giving His life for our sins.

race is one of the most wonderful things available to us when we become a Christian. Personally, I am so grateful to the Almighty God for making this available to us. God gave His only Son so that we could be saved and have eternal life.

EPHESIANS 2:8–9 (NKJV) 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, Grace is something that we need not just for a moment; it is something we need on an ongoing basis. We need it daily! The fact is as humans we sin and make mistakes continually, even though our deepest desire is to live righteously and to please God in all we do. Many people have not come to understanding the magnitude of what took place at the cross, when Jesus died for you and me. When you truly grasp how unbelievable and amazing this occurrence was, you will begin to understand to some extent what true grace really means. The Bible tells us that:
TITUS 2:11 (NKJV) 11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, You see, in the above part of verse 11 it tells us that grace that comes to us when we get saved teaches us something. We must ask ourselves the question, what does the grace that brings salvation teach us? It teaches us that the price was so great, and if we understand all that Jesus did for us, it will empower us to change the way we live. Let’s look at the following verse:
TITUS 2:12 (NKJV) 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, Once you truly understand the power of grace, it will change the way you approach the way you live. This grace is the greatest gift that God gave us and the immensity of it empowers us to begin to walk in the light. I hope this encourages and blesses you! Remember, God is not looking for perfect people; He is looking for surrendered people. Grace be to you!
