D
uring simpler times getting to your destination was, well...simpler. You would pack your bags, head down to the airport a half hour before your flight, and maybe even mingle with the pilot prior to takeoff. Once there, you would show the person at the counter your ticket and you were off to your destination. With more complicated times, however, came more complicated procedures. Security checkpoints had to be installed to ensure safety, and you may miss your flight if you don’t arrive early enough. Anybody leaving Vero Beach for another major city already knows about the hassle and travel time involved in getting to your destination. The Orlando airport is a solid hour and a half drive from our community, and one must consider how to get to and from the airport or where to park your car. When factoring in travel and wait times, it’s safe to assume that you must leave home three to four hours before your flight departs. Weighing your luggage at the counter and deciding what you can and cannot bring with you is always a hassle. With Covid now being a major factor, one must also consider the risks involved with traveling in a crowded space with a few hundred other passengers. Travel just isn’t what it used to be, and the “friendly skies” aren’t so friendly these days. This begs the question, if the travel industry has gotten so much more advanced, why has getting from A to B gotten so much more complicated? Steve Clements is the Senior VP of Operations of VeriJet in Vero Beach and he says that it doesn’t have to be. in high school here in South Florida. He is a former Army helicopter pilot and commercial airline pilot. Over the course of 45 years he has logged over 18,000 hours of flight time. Given his experience as one of the founding directors of Virgin Airlines on the west coast in 2004, he saw a prime opportunity to bring the ease of travel back to the skies, and Vero Beach as the perfect base of operations to do it. ust over two years ago, Clements had a discussion with Richard Kane, the CEO of VeriJet, about starting an airline that would be a perfect alternative to the larger commercial airliners. Kane, who comes from a background in artificial intelligence and is also an avid aviator, had been working on this idea for almost a decade. “What if the same algorithms that were used to call an Uber could be applied to booking a flight?” In calling an Uber, you choose where you’re going and when you leave. Getting dropped off at an out-of-the-way location and picked up by a different car to take you to your destination would seem ridiculous. Why then should airline travel be any different? The idea was there, but for this idea to take flight, VeriJet would need two things: the right location and the right airplane. The latter would come in the form of the Cirrus Vision SF50. The private jet boasts a luxury interior not unlike a luxury sedan. The cabin comfortably seats up to four adults and two children and will even allow your family pet to sit comfortably at your side instead of being made to travel in a crate. The customer responses have been overwhelmingly positive, particularly when speaking on the visibility from the cabin.

owever, the Cirrus Vision SF50 is not ideal simply for its spacious cabin. “It’s the most advanced plane I’ve ever flown in over 45 years as an airline pilot,” Clements says. “It has more tech, more advanced systems than anything you’ll find on any commercial airliner.” VeriJet’s aircrafts reduce the carbon footprint of travel. Whereas a commercial jet will routinely burn up 900 gallons an hour, the Cirrus Vision SF50 reduces that number to about 60. It also has the ability to burn five types of fuel, including biofuel, leaving a “positive” carbon footprint. VeriJet’s planes are equipped with an industry-first AI system called “Safe Return.” In the unlikely event the pilot cannot land the plane themselves, passengers can activate Safe Return from the cabin. The AI will then determine the closest airport, contact air traffic control, and land the plane safely. For passengers who would be dissuaded from flying due to Covid, VeriJet can put you at ease, knowing that every safety precaution is taken. Not only is every cabin routinely cleaned and sterilized, but a special UV light is used to kill any bacteria that may have been left behind from the previous flight. Clements explains that on a commercial airliner you are likely to touch up to 700 points of contact during the course of your flight. Through VeriJet, that number plummets to less than 100. Simply put, your risk is decreased dramatically. Every VeriJet pilot is routinely tested for Covid. Safety features notwithstanding, the VeriJet team have brought the idea of ease of travel to fruition. Simply by accessing the mobile app or going on the website, flyverijet.com, you can type in the address – not the airport – of where you would like to travel and VeriJet can bring you much closer to your destination than a large airport. Since VeriJet began operating six months ago, the demand has been unprecedented. Currently, VeriJet typically flies within 600 nautical miles outside of Vero Beach, but has the ability to travel much further. VeriJet will begin chartering flights to the Bahamas next month, while the next target for expansion will be the west coast. here are eight jets total with six of them flying out of Vero. With three more jets being added to the fleet in the next 45 days, and another 10-15 scheduled to be added by the end of next year, VeriJet is bringing fast, aggressive expansion to our community, and with it, career opportunities. “The target was to democratize the travel industry to provide reliable, safe transportation.” Clements says, “We’re booked solid, and that’s a good problem to have.” VeriJet has brought something special to our little beachside community. With its home here in Vero Beach, we can all look forward to a return to a simpler time: a time when flying was easier and faster, right here in our own backyard.

Interview by et’s talk about Facebook. I’ve gotten addicted as an older guy to Facebook, and you said there are studies that show that people who spend too much time on Facebook are actually lonelier instead of feeling comforted by the “supposed friends.” Yes, they are. And Rhett Palmer Facebook depression is what it’s called, and one of the biggest culprits causing it is people are comparing themselves. On social media we only tend to post the glamorous side of life, all the good things. We all have problems but we hide it. We don’t typically get out there and talk about the bad days that we have or the horrible things that happened this week; we only show our best sides. So people look at that and go, “Well, my life stinks. Everybody’s life is great but mine.” Of course it’s a lie. And so they end up depressed and it pushes you into isolation, you feel like, “Well, if they knew that I had those kinds of problems they wouldn’t like me, they would think less of me.” But the truth is, everybody lives life and has problems; we just don’t show it.
Everybody, that’s right. Everybody, and without exception. And so what’s the antidote? Well, in the natural, stay off of Facebook. But the truth is, the satisfaction is only going to be found first in God, and then secondly with God’s people, face-to-face, minus the technology. This satisfaction comes with having people that you know really love you, really care about you. When you’re down, they are actually there for you with their undivided attention. God is like that for us. We don’t always give that to Him, but He’s always there for us like that. And when you can find humans who are like that and it reciprocates, then there’s an emotional safety net, a spiritual and mental safety net that only comes human-to-human, face-to-face, when it’s really based in God’s love. We’ve got quite a war going on here with this whole thing. I remember my former engineer, Jodi, she goes, “You think those people on Facebook are your friends? They’re not your friends.” She’s right. But obviously a handful would be. Right, a handful. Some of them are. I’m your friend on Facebook. But I know what she’s driving at. It’s narcissism, Rhett. Basically, everybody wants to post something to get those likes, because that “like” button, as you know from The Social Dilemma documentary, was developed to generate dopamine to give you a good feeling, so everybody’s after the good feeling. It becomes selfish; they’re not really interested in what you just posted. Now, there might be a couple, but really nobody’s interested in what you just had for dinner or success in the bathroom or whatever it is you just posted.

I don’t think they’re doing that as much anymore, but I do notice this. A lot of local young ladies that were posting pictures out there, pictures of themselves, had no idea how narcissistic...They had fallen into that hole of narcissism. You know what I mean? Yes, I do. And look, social media, I don’t want to make it sound like it’s all bad; it can be a great repository for some really good things. Like I’ll post a scripture every morning, no pictures with it. And my desire, as is God’s desire whenever you read His word, is that something will be read from Him that will build you up and encourage you, and you can read that on a screen and be built up. t has been a tough year for those of us that love travel to Europe in the summer, and I’m pleased that Greece was the first country to announce they will be welcoming all international visitors beginning May 15th as long as they are vaccinated or have a negative Covid-19 test within 72 hours of traveling. Of course, the US still requires a negative test within 3 days of returning to the US so you’ll need to understand that process if you aren’t vaccinated. Details can be found at cdc.gov. The good thing is that if you plan to cruise through Greece this summer, cruise lines are taking care of the test for you complimentary prior to your return home. Speaking of cruising the Greek Isles, cruise lines from large to small are taking advantage of this great opportunity with fantastic itineraries. You can cruise medium to large ships with value pricing on Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises or Royal Caribbean, or luxuriate in small ship sailing with Crystal Cruises or Silversea. Some stay within the Greek Isles and some also have stops in Israel for a full Eastern Mediterranean adventure. Whether you choose to cruise or wish to explore Greece by land, you’ll want to research the country to ensure a wonderful trip. Greece and its islands are so diverse that you need to know how you wish to travel (see my April article). If you want to stay off the beaten path and enjoy the locals, try the small villages on Chiros and Ikaria. Looking
to explore nature and enjoy seclusion, try Kalymnos, Samothraki, and surprisingly close to Athens, Skyros. These islands are often quite affordable and you can expect quaint small inns/hotels for your stay. I mention that Skyros is surprisingly close to Athens because for the most part, the more secluded and local the island, the more difficult to get to. Schedules to these remote islands whether by ferry or flight is sporadic, so be sure to check transportation before you make any plans, and always opt for the pricier but much faster and more enjoyable hydrofoils/high-speed ferries – then enjoy! If you are a history buff, then a stop in Crete or Rhodes is a must, and finally to mingle with the jetsetters and go first class, you must go to Mykonos and Santorini which will cost you three to four times the amount you will spend on the lesser-known islands, but where you will find amazing hotels, fabulous restaurants, nightlife and beach clubs with services with a drag-show thrown in for good measure. ne of my favorite beach clubs is Jackie O’s on Mykonos. A great pool deck and bar leads down to the beach and is definitely a great place to people-watch. Go early to snag lounge chairs by the pool overlooking the Aegean. If you plan on spending time on one island and exploring, besides renting a villa instead of a hotel (almost the same cost), you’ll rent a car since taxis are scarce, and purchase insurance since many credit card companies don’t cover the Greek Islands. Going to the popular islands, head there in shoulder season to avoid the crowds. If you travel in May/June or September, you will have space to move, the ability to secure restaurant reservations and beach chairs for a much more wonderful experience. Your first time visiting Greece? Cruising is the way to go. With the huge number of wonderful options this summer, you can have a taste of several islands and plan to head back to spend more time on your favorite. Trust me you will. Greece is a country you’ll want to return to. As for Athens? One day is fine. While the police have done a great job in curbing crime in recent years, and the government has spent some money on infrastructure, my tip is to hire a private guide, or arrive a day early for your cruise to explore the must-see Parthenon, Olympic Stadium, Acropolis and other famous sites and then head to the islands. Greece is open and ready … what are you waiting for? Speak to a travel professional today to plan the perfect trip.

REVIEWS Godzilla vs. Kong Rated PG13 HBO Max by Chuck Cannon
I
wanted to do this review so I could have a good time trashing it. It was going to be too easy. I have invested in my media room a new SONOS surround-sound system with two subs. Godzilla vs. Kong was the type of movie that I knew would deliver the sound and visual satisfaction that I wanted to take my system for a ride. In addition to this, I could have fun trashing this plotless train wreck. While watching the movie, it struck me that most of us didn’t really need or want a plot, or at least a strong plot. We wanted to see the Titans do battle! The human actors, including Millie Bobby Brown, were the filler. They were the typical characters that made bad jokes while mayhem is happening. They were the characters that could effortlessly break into government-secured areas. They were the characters that could hack into government and corporate computer systems as the countdown clock was reaching zero and miraculously figure out a complex code

to stop the disaster from happening. They were the characters that could command soldiers to stand down simply because they were just so cute and demanding. Yes, this was going to be an easy trashing. I grew up with the classic Creature Feature Friday Night doubleheaders. I had Godzilla and King Kong Aurora models in my room as a kid. They were glued together, badly painted, and scattered around my bedroom. I started going down memory lane while watching and found myself not hating the movie. None of the classics were done very well, but we loved them as kids. Now as a functioning adult I stand on my mighty throne and demand quality of my monster movies? How dare me! Think of this through a kid’s mind...Godzilla battling King Kong. Sh#@*oot – that’s all you gotta say! o my review was thought up one way and turned out this way, a mess. Don’t expect a great plot with well-written characters; just hang your head out the window and enjoy the ride like you did when you were a kid. With all that being said, I’m still only going to give it a generous 2 Stars. If you’re not testing out your audio/video system, it’s a dud. You can fast forward to the last half hour for the big fight scene and save yourself some misery.

his month I’m sharing recipes from a friend, Carole Walsh, who currently lives in New Jersey. The pudding recipe is her grandmother’s that she came across in an old church cookbook. Both of these recipes are perfect for Mom this Mother’s Day. She’ll love the creamy coconut with raspberries and dense fudgy brownies … yum!
Snowflake Pudding with Crimson Raspberry Sauce Dorothy Daube
Lovely for company. INGREDIENTS For the pudding: • 1/2 cup sugar • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin (1 tablespoon) • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 cup milk • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3 1/2 ounce can sweetened coconut flakes (1-1/3 cups) • 2 cups cream, whipped For the sauce: • 10 ounces frozen raspberries • 1 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch • 1/2 cup red currant jelly

INSTRUCTIONS • In a saucepan combine sugar, gelatin and salt. Add milk, and over low heat stir until gelatin and sugar are dissolved. Remove from heat and chill until partially set. • Add vanilla and stir in coconut, then gently fold in whipped cream. • Pour into a well-oiled 1 1/2-quart mold and refrigerate at least 4 hours. (Or you can pour directly into pretty dessert dishes or glassware.) • Crush raspberries and place in a saucepan. Add cornstarch and stir well; add jelly. • Place over low heat and cook and stir until mixture thickens slightly. • Strain and chill for 1 hour before serving.
Fudgy Flourless Brownies Carole Walsh
Rich and delicious, gluten-free, and uses just one bowl to prepare. INGREDIENTS • Nonstick cooking spray, foil, 8x8” baking pan • 1 stick of butter, cut into 8 pieces • 3/4 cup (4.8 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 cup sugar • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed • 3/4 cup unsweetened natural (not Dutch) cocoa (I used Ghirardelli) • 3 large eggs • 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 1/3 cup cornstarch • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 cup walnut or pecan pieces (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS • Preheat the oven to 350. Line an 8x8” baking pan with foil (by turning it over and covering the bottom and then inserting inside pan), allowing overhang for removal. Lightly spray the foil with nonstick spray. • Combine the butter and chocolate chips in a deep bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each 30 seconds, until the butter is melted and well combined with the chocolate. • Stir in the eggs, one at a time, until each egg is fully incorporated. Add vanilla, stir in the salt and then the cornstarch. Add nuts, if desired. • Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and bake in the upper 1/3 of the oven for about 30 minutes. Check to see if the center looks cooked and the extreme edges are just a little more set than the center. Cook an additional minute or so if they don’t seem done. (Mine were perfectly done at 30 min.) • Cool completely in the pan on a rack. Lift the brownies from the cooled pan and transfer to a cutting board.

Latest Apple Privacy Update by Laura Steward
T
here has been a lot of press lately around the upcoming version of Apple’s operating system. Mostly around a new privacy feature that Facebook and other app developers are complaining about hurting their business. I thought this worthy of an article because it gives visibility to a larger issue: that of your data privacy. Currently app developers like Facebook bury permission deep in the minutia of user agreements. It is embedded deeply, and for many it doesn’t matter. They want to use the app so they are willing to just agree to a contract they don’t even read. Apple is going to require developers to create a pop-up that alerts you to how they want to use your data. You can agree or not and still have access to the app. Currently using the app implies they have full access to your data in the app and on any other app on the device. Meaning once you open the app, they can track your movements to and from other sites. Ever wonder why, when you do a search on your phone or computer, all of a sudden ads for that product or service begin appearing in Facebook, Google, or other places? Blame it on the tracking piece called IDFA or “identifier for advertisers.” Apple wants to make sure you know when an app wants to track you and wants it to be transparent.
Why should you care? Data is the biggest currency that apps like Facebook and even games have in their arsenal. Especially if they are “free” to use apps. I put free in quotes because nothing is free. They are getting something from you, whether it is in-app purchases or tracking data that tells what you search for and buy online. That data is sold for significant sums of money. Having that data allows them to target ads to you that will increase their chances of you buying the product they place in front of you. It can also help them personalize your experience while using their app. That is priceless to them and a potential threat to you because it is an opportunity for hackers to target false “phishing” ads or emails to you to install ransomware, malware, or even to hack your financial accounts and steal your identity. It is a convenience to you because you will have less ads about things you don’t want. I personally just ignore the ads that pop up in Facebook and assume they are mostly linked to malware. ntil Apple comes out with the new release, you can go into your iPhone settings >privacy>tracking and turn it off. And if you see an ad, consider googling the product outside of the app to see if it is legit. Always a good idea. As my dad always said to me, don’t believe everything you read.

What happens if your property taxes become delinquent? P roperty tax payments become delinquent April 1st of each year, and a 3% penalty (interest for April and May) is assessed to each delinquent real estate tax bill. On May 1st, the Tax Collector will prepare for the tax certificate sale that will be held on June 1st, and additional advertising and auction fees are added to the outstanding tax bill. Prior to the sale, the list of delinquent properties will be advertised once a week for three consecutive weeks. The tax certificate sale is a one-day online event that allows individuals and companies to bid an interest rate on the outstanding taxes due. The lowest interest rate bid wins. The interest bids on a certificate range from 0% to 18% and may be entered in 0.25% increments. Tax certificates sold against unpaid taxes convey no property rights; they are simply an interest-bearing lien.

The Record
T
he therapist told me to “look at my record” to discover where the problem began. It didn’t make sense. I was battling a contemporary foe, not some past-tense phantom. The pain was real now, and I wanted relief today. Why must I sift through past injury? It would only increase my distress. I scoffed at the suggestion. Laying in bed that night, I had no choice. Sleep wouldn’t come and my mind was racing. “Look at my record.” What did that even mean? This current relationship issue had torn me in two, so I started there. Had I ever felt so hurt before? Is it possible I would have ever allowed myself to be this wounded? The memory swept in and erased my musing. I was only a teenager, but I remembered feeling the same pain. Some girls had handed me a false measure of myself, and instead of rejecting their conclusion, I put it on and wore it like a badge that read, “I am not enough.” My fifteen-year-old dreams were dashed, and with them, my self-esteem. A gentle tear fell to my pillow as the memory of the girls laughing at me faded and was replaced by another. In it, I was standing in my boss’s office. It was my first real job and I was proud when I had landed it right after finishing school. In this recollection, however, I had been exposed as the imposter I believed myself to be. “I wasn’t enough” to handle the client appropriately. I had failed. The tears multiplied but never became sobs. They came softly, like the tide comes in on a quiet beach. My mind continued to replay the same emotion wrapped in different memories. Slowly, my record unfolded before me. Over and over, I replayed the same feeling. “I was not enough.” The record was clear. The next day, I woke up with a headache. Sleep had been fitful, and I didn’t want to start the day. The voice of self-pity arose telling me that no one would miss me if I chose to hide out and avoid other people. I called in sick Beth Walsh Stewart and left the shades drawn.

Around noontime, there was a knock on the door. I ignored it, but a serious rapping followed. When I cracked the door, she pushed it open with force. “You’re not doing this,” she said. “It’s time we figure this out.” At first, I refused to engage. She was talking and asking questions. Then she turned the tables on me. She started talking and telling me about a different record. She recounted when she had been arrested for drunk driving and was afraid to call her family, I showed up to bail her out. Then she reported how I went to that 12-step meeting with her because she was afraid, and it was there she got her life back together. She reminded me of our second-grade field trip when she got separated from the group, and I had stopped the teacher from moving on without her. She remembered the time we had gone on that double date and her fellow was obnoxious, shoveling the food in and chewing with his mouth open. Soon, we were laughing so hard I forgot I was depressed. Then she dropped the bomb. She told me that if I ever questioned if I was enough again, I needed to remember that I was irreplaceable to her. She said I had made her life so much better. And in that moment I went from inadequate to invaluable. kept my next therapist appointment, but the sorting had happened at my own kitchen counter when my friend reminded me that I am treasured. If you ever wondered if you are enough, it’s time to sort it out. Record keeping isn’t done in red ink. Take the time to ask someone who remembers what you may have forgotten. Always remember that you are God’s delight, as well.

Mother’s Day M
oms plays a very important role in society and in the lives of their families. As Mother’s Day approaches, I am aware that a lot of people have different feelings surrounding their mothers. However, TODAY, I would like to honor every single mother out there. As the years have gone by, I have realized just how much a mom does, and oftentimes nobody even notices the copious amount of time, effort and hard work that goes into getting everything done on a daily basis. Oftentimes moms need to do the same monotonous tasks over and over again, making sure that everybody has what they need and more. After our second child was born, I remember wondering why my wife was so tired and stressed out at the end of the day. I felt like my wife needed to realize that I work hard all day with different people’s personalities, planning, management, and all the stress that goes along with my everyday responsibilities, including crisis control that occur in the church. One day after feeling a little sorry for her I decided that she needed a little help with all her responsibilities because she really looked exhausted. I thought I would give her a little help with doing dishes and cooking, etc. In my mind I envisioned this to be a piece of cake. Oh, my goodness! Nothing prepared me for what I was about to discover. I came to realize that just by helping in one or two areas the time and effort that it takes and that it is not as easy as it looked. I was in shock for a while, and could not believe that she could be such an incredible mom and wife with all the stress of

her responsibilities at home and also working at the church. It was mind boggling how she could take such amazing care of her family and also run an entire household, and the list goes on and on. So today my advice to everyone will be not to take Mom for granted or underestimate the work that she does behind the scenes and in front of everyone. Quite honestly, I think my wife is Superwoman. I know that everything she does can only be motivated by true love. Make sure to let the mom in your life know how much you value and appreciate her. She is so worth it! The Bible also mentions that a Godly woman who runs her home and builds it in the ways of the Lord is very special and she is considered to be wise. In another passage the Bible shows how God compares His comfort to the way a mother comforts her child. This confirms just how great the comfort of a mother is.

his Mother’s Day make sure to love and appreciate your mom. Her commitment, strength, love and comfort are truly incomparable. Happy Mother’s Day to every single mom. May this year be the best one yet. I pray that God will give you everything you need to live a life full of blessings and overflowing love and joy.

zekiel, the prophet, states in chapter 47:1-5 that the living river of God is flowing from the Temple. The water rises to the ankles, then the knees, then the waist, then over the head. It is water to swim in. We are to step out in faith no matter what goes on around us. God will bring us through any and all trials, tribulations, and testings. He is with us. Even though it seems that events are “over our heads,” God is still faithful and trustworthy to help and keep us safe. Psalm 40:1-3 states that God brings us out of the miry clay. He sets us upon a solid rock and puts a song in our hearts. As you venture out in faith in your Christian walk, trust Jesus to be with you. Swim by faith; you will not drown.
