The Christmas pickle ornament is questionably an old-world German tradition. It is the last ornament hung on the tree deep in its boughs on Christmas Eve. The first one to find it Christmas morning gets a special gift. The American city of Bemen Springs, Maryland, known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World, has an annual pickle festival during early December. Carving intricate radish sculptures is a centuryold holiday in Oaxaca, Mexico. Merchants tried to attract shoppers on their way to and from Christmas church services with intricate vegetable displays. The merchants carved radishes into people, animals and other decorative shapes, and they are used as centerpieces. ■
An estimated 3.6 million Japanese families treat themselves to a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken for Christmas. ■
The Yule Goat has been a Swedish Christmas symbol dating back to ancient pagan festivals. In 1966 someone came up with the idea to make a giant straw goat, called the Gävle Goat, which is over 42 feet high, 23 feet wide, and weighs 3.6 tons. It is the world’s largest straw goat. This Swedish tradition has unwittingly led to another tradition of sorts – people trying to burn it down. Since 1966 the Goat has been successfully burned down 29 times, most recently in 2016. ■
Many Finns visit the sauna on Christmas Eve. Families gather and listen to the national “Peace of Christmas” radio broadcast. It is customary to visit the gravesites of departed family members. ■

In the 13 days leading up to Christmas in Iceland, 13 troll-like characters called Yule Lads come out to visit the children across the country. For each night of Yuletide, children place their best shoes by the window and a different Yule Lad visits, leaving gifts for nice girls and boys and rotting potatoes for the naughty ones.

When spiders heard the children crying, they decorated their tree with beautiful sparkly webs. The spider symbolizes good luck for the New Year, so Ukrainians decorate their trees with them.
Every year the people of Caracas, Venezuela, head to Christmas morning mass on roller skates. So many people take part in this tradition that they close the streets to traffic. Kids go to bed with a piece of string tied around their toe and the other end of the string hangs out of the window, and as the skaters ride past, they tug on the string so the kids know it’s time to get up. ■

L
et’s talk about your book Sheep No More: The Art of Awareness and Attack Survival. Why this book, and what is it about? So you know about what I did at AMTI where I was giving this course, Soft Target Awareness Training. I think it was written by Jonathan T. Gilliam firefighters and first responders, and it wasn’t really doing much for the people that I was giving the class to. I realized at that point that this was the frontline; it wasn’t necessarily just overseas, this was the frontline here in the United States. So I re-wrote the program and I taught people how to look at themselves and target themselves from the attackers’ point of view so they could turn around and actually build better defenses before the attack happens. A lot of people were just stunned by what I was teaching because they had never looked at themselves from that point of view, and they didn’t realize that they were on the front line. So I knew then when I left that job that this was going to be something that I had to share with the American people. I sat on it for about ten years before I actually started writing a book because I wanted to wait and get a better feel for how this should be written for the American people. So once I was in the FBI and did the special events in an official capacity, actually working with these different groups, civilian groups and the public sector, I knew it was time. And so I started writing it heavily when I got out of the Bureau. Then I couldn’t get a publisher to take it. I was told by at least five different big publishers that it was irrelevant. And finally Post Hill Press and Anthony Ziccardi said, “We think

this is very relevant,” and so they gave me an opportunity, we published it, and it’s been a best-seller. It shows people how to look at their life from the attackers’ point of view; divide their life into sectors, and then target each sector so that you can then turn around and build better defenses. There’s nothing else out there like it, and it’s gotten rave reviews. I want to ask you this. I was this kid in Poughkeepsie, New York, who sold lemonade and shined shoes on Saturday at the barbershop, and I grew up thinking that the FBI were my heroes. And then I find out that this guy who headed up the FBI is informing the press surreptitiously, and then these other FBI agents are saying, “We’re not going to allow Trump to be president.” What do you think about that, as a former FBI guy?

In the FBI I learned how to be an investigator, and it was a skill set. And one of the reasons why I got out of the FBI was because I realized, through various things that had occurred, that I could make more of an impact with my skill set outside of the Bureau than I could inside the Bureau because there was a lot of wrangling of the investigators. And I couldn’t put my finger on what that was until all this stuff happened with Trump and the “Russia investigation.” It wasn’t really an investigation as much as it was entrapment, an attempted entrapment. But what I see from an investigative standpoint, with my skill set that they taught me, is that the way that they did things is absolutely seditious. And anybody can look at this that has investigative experience and say something is not right here. You do not, in any investigation, you don’t say, “Hey, man, if we just had blood splatter on that wall we could solve this,” and all of a sudden boom, there’s blood spatter on the wall. That’s not the way investigation works. You look for evidence, you find evidence, and then you let that evidence lead you. In the case with the Trump administration, the way the FBI went after him and the way they’ve done this stuff, they literally – and with cooperation of the media – they created evidence, then put it in front of a judge, and used that evidence to further their fake investigation.

That is the reality of what’s happened to America: we’ve been slowly boiled alive. You can call it communism, Marxism, leftism, globalism, whatever you want to call it, it’s all the same. The reality now is that the water is very hot, and our freedoms are boiling.
It’s quite scary, the ignorance of people. Let’s talk about Donald Trump. Here comes this guy – and there’s no doubt that he’s very inflammatory – and there’s no one, even on the far right, who hasn’t said, “Gosh, I wish he’d stop tweeting.” But you know what? He’s always ten steps ahead of all of us. First of all, I don’t know what your beliefs are. Are you a believer in Jesus as the Messiah? Or where are you at with that? We’ve all felt that way about the president. But the reality is, as one of my followers on social media said, President Trump is not the guy who’s going to dock the ship; he’s the one who turned it. And if it hadn’t been for him doing what he does, the way he does it, and belittling the media and these It’s un-American. So I try to emulate David who was a man after God’s own heart, and study the Bible and understand Jesus and who He is. ou know, I drive all over the place. I have a small RV and drive to all these different shows and I’ve spent a lot of time on the road. And what I’ve discovered that I think a lot of people are missing here is that the only place in history – and you find this in the Bible – but the only place in history where chaos is this organized and has this multi-level management is in demonic influence. And I can truly say, when you look at the history of demonic influence, and you look at what people have said that have been around this, and then you look at the riots in Portland, in Wisconsin, in New York, and in Georgia, and you look at the way the politicians react and manage that, there’s no military force in the world, or intelligence force in the world that could manage this type of deception without demonic influence. I just don’t think it’s going away.

nd that’s an amazing thing for a guy like you to say because you have your feet firmly on the ground. You’re a Navy SEAL, you know reality, and the fact that you can speak so candidly and openly about your faith, I’m right with you 100 percent. I think as Nebuchadnezzar was God’s servant, so too is Donald Trump, with all his flaws and all his inflammatory language, I think that he’s God’s man, you know? If you look through the Bible, there’s never been any of God’s great servants who were infallible. Look at the disciples through the New Testament, they were clueless most of the time until they became the apostles and then they got it. And I think that’s where America is now. We are at that point where it’s time for us to stop being useful idiots, to stop following the learned helplessness, and realize that we are the ones that God and the Founding Fathers intended to rule the nation – not the Cuomos, which is another thing that’s very, very dangerous right now is that the governors are mini-dictators. I don’t think that most people realize what’s happening with that.
Listen to this. So when the numbers started to go down, Cuomo goes, “God didn’t do this, prayer didn’t do it; we did it.” Oh, my word, I’m just waiting for God to knock him for a loop. Cuomo is also the guy who put all the elderly with COVID in the elderly homes and caused it to go up. That wasn’t God, that was Cuomo – and it wasn’t Trump like he is blaming today – that was Cuomo who signed an executive order to do that. Explain what a useful idiot is. We’ve been taught to learn helplessness in this nation. We’ve been taught that you’re not the one who’s going to make the difference, it’s the politicians; you’re not the one who sets the trends or your voice isn’t important, it’s the famous people. So over a period of time people have started to function in a way of, “I need this, I better turn to the government,” or “I don’t know what the truth is, I better turn to media,” and they totally ignore what they think is right and wrong unless they’re told to think that way, and that is a useful idiot. And Saul Alinsky who was a devout leftist and atheist actually dedicated his book Rules for Radicals to Satan, which is why in my book,
the last most important dedication is to Jesus and to God. And that’s why the smarter our phones get, the dumber we become, because they want you reliant, and as you become reliant you become more gullible and therefore you are a useful idiot. They can turn literally thousands and millions of people against the truth because they say it’s not the truth. Did I leave anything out that you’d like to say today? I want the American people to realize they are the ones that this country depends on the most, and while all these men and women are serving overseas, this is the frontline, this is where you count, and if we don’t start fighting the good fight we are going to lose our freedom. Stocking I
guarantee I am the only person who can name what he received for Christmas for the past eight years. My secret lies in an unusual family tradition involving our Christmas stockings. The tradition started the year my parents noticed that my sister Sydney and I had filled our wish lists with toys that had no lasting value. Even worse, none of the items required creativity or boosted brainpower. My parents decided that the only gift any of us needed was time together doing something we could all enjoy, something that would last. So, that year Santa filled our stockings with warm mittens. You can imagine how dumbfounded Sydney and I were by the gifts, since we live in Florida. However, what followed was unforgettable. The mittens meant that we were leaving immediately for a trip to Washington, DC, with only two hours to pack. That Christmas Day redefined “stocking” for us.
From then on, my parents stuffed our stockings with random clues pointing to the destination we would enjoy that year. Miami Heat basketball tickets may have been the actual prize, but along the way we were introduced to Miami Beach art deco and my first Cuban sandwich. Another year, the mosquito repellant brought panic until we saw we were headed for an Everglades airboat tour. I’m not sure if it’s the sense of surprise or the extended Christmas with family that gives our stockings so much appeal. But I do know that the money we would have spent on material gifts was instead invested much more wisely in memories. My stocking, whether filled with an avocado or a shrimp-boat figurine, has given me the best gifts possible: treasured time spent with my family.

Sheriff Deryl Loar told me every twelve days somebody overdoses in Indian River County. Sounds like a lot, it sounds preposterous. But it’s true. We’re here with Lisa Rymer, Chief Development Officer at New Horizons, and Major Milo Thornton of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office and a Board Director at New Horizons.
What is New Horizons?
L
isa Rymer: New Horizons is a nonprofit behavioral health provider. Established in 1958, we are the largest mental health and addiction recovery agency in the fourcounty region. We serve 15,000 children and adults annually, regardless of their ability to pay. In Indian River County, we have two outpatient offices, and we serve about 2,500 children and adults here.
So, if somebody needs to go into rehab, you provide that? LR: New Horizons has inpatient drug/alcohol rehab (28 days), and detox units at our main campus in Fort Pierce, as well as a wide range of outpatient mental health services. We offer therapy, counseling, medical services, case management, and we have an adult crisis unit and a children’s crisis unit.
How do you get your funding so people can go there if they can’t afford to go into recovery? LR: About 60% of our clients are without income or any insurance. We get half of our funding from the Florida Department of Children and Families. Each county also contributes to help serve the indigent from those

counties, as the monies that we get from DCF do not cover the entire amount. And then we get insurance and private pay. We fill the gap in funding with fundraisers, private donations and grants.
Major Milo Thornton, why did you choose to join this board? Major Milo Thornton: All too often we see individuals come in to our jail that don’t belong in our jail. They have mental health issues that need to be addressed in a different manner, not in criminal court, but more in a mental health setting. These folks could appear to be aggressive and violent. I’ve been an instructor at the Treasure Coast Public Safety Center for 15-plus years, and I often tell my students, “Focus on criminal intent. Are these individuals experiencing a medical crisis? Do they have the criminal intent to commit said crime?” Across this country, jails are filled with folks that have mental health issues.
What has happened to our country? LR: Well, we have a lot of trauma. Child abuse is reported every 8 seconds in America. One out of four girls is sexually abused before age 18, and one out of six boys. We understand addiction better now, and childhood trauma. And what constitutes trauma? There are ten things in general that impact children – they’re called adverse childhood experiences.

I
always wondered what the North Pole looked like. When flying to Hong Kong several years ago from New York, the flight took us over the Arctic. At just the right time according to the flight map when we were just south of the North Pole, and with boyish exuberance, I opened my window shade to look down and spy Christmas Town. Imagine my disappointment when all I saw was white. I knew it was a fantasy, but at some point in the next year or so I plan to make a visit to the Arctic a reality. Whether by land or sea, I may just spy Christmas Town after all and pay a visit to Santa. Expedition cruising is gaining momentum with many itineraries in 2021 and 2022 focusing on Antarctica, which is getting a bit crowded, but the journey to the Arctic is still relatively unknown. With the CDC lifting the “no-sail” order and health and safety protocols the most stringent in the travel industry, cruising will
be back strong for the summer season to the Arctic and beyond. The cost is less than you think, so I am weighing three different options to pay Santa a visit. I’m choosing the route through Scandinavia versus Canada. Why? Besides Santa being born here as Kris Kringle, on a trek to see Santa, I need to see reindeer of course! And while you may think an expedition is difficult, most of these cruises are for both young and old regardless of how active you wish to be (my activity level is somewhere between couch-potato and brisk-walk). My choices…two with cruises Summer 2021 and one debuting in 2022. All include guides/lecturers and all amenities you need. I’ve also decided Christmas Town is on Svalbard Island, the dramatic island north of Norway so close to the North Pole I’ll feel like one of Santa’s elves and a must on a journey to visit Santa.

REVIEWS The Queen’s Gambit – TV MA Netflix Mini Series Seven Episodes

W
ho would have thought that I, Chuck Cannon, would have given The Queen’s Gambit a watch. I felt as though I had watched almost everything on Netflix this year, but a series about an introverted, prodigious orphan who grows up socially awkward and a hard-drinking, drug-addicted chess player wasn’t really doing it for me. Sounded kind of boring or at least a little overreaching, right? I don’t know that much about chess to be very excited about the storyline, plus, I don’t know…Chess? Could a chess tournament create the tension and gut-wrenching emotion of, say, Rocky? Maybe I’ll just watch Rocky again. And I didn’t really know what the title means; some chess reference, I guessed. I knew who Queen was, but what’s a gambit? As you can see, I am all over the map when deciding on a movie. The story moves carefully, thoughtfully, and deliberately. Yet there’s a tension throughout. It’s never predictable. Beneath it all is the back story of the history of gender roles and underlying pervasive misogyny. Beth is forced to play the game in life and on the board. I’m not often enthralled, but this story did exactly that. Enough complexity to keep the scholar in me engaged, while containing enough heart and tension to keep my emotions on a rollercoaster. Since The Sopranos, seldom has a mini-series moved me as much as this did. The character depictions by the cast were all they should have been and more. Anya was stunning, both in depth and camera-magnetics. She really commanded all the scenes and her wins and losses, highs and lows, affected the viewer emotionally. This was such a joy to watch. Tremendous performances by an excellent cast and a great 60’s soundtrack to boot. Seriously, enjoy this story. Well-written...superbly acted...totally engaging. I’d have given it six stars, if I could have. Actually I can... THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT Because I can! Checkmate!
Let Him Go – Rated R by Marshall Frank In a word: Drama. wo of Hollywood’s finest star actors over the decades give their all in this powerful drama about a rural family living in the Dakotas (c. 1961) who lost their adult son to illness. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane could each end up with an Oscar nomination, as these two professionals offer an acting lesson to all the actor wannabes on how to make the screen come alive with the power of love, fear, loss and determination. The story personifies “drama,” and begins like a slow burn as the middle-aged couple watch on the sidelines to learn their widowed daughter-in-law remarried a local, thus giving a new home for her and her three-year-old boy. The story becomes more intense when Lane’s character, as a grandmother, becomes incensed learning that the grandchild and his mother have been subjected to mistreatment. Thus begins the emotional journey as the grandparents embark on a dangerous mission to intervene, a more difficult task than they bargained for. The movie has a sluggish beginning which gradually crescendos as the story intensifies, keeping viewers at the “edge of your seat.” The finale is deeply vicious, unanticipated by Costner and Lane’s characters. Acting credits are not only due the star players, but the supporting cast as well, particularly Leslie Manville who plays a powerful role as the psychotic grandmother who dominates a backward family of rugged men. Though not as well-known as Costner and Lane, her professional credits and numbers of award nominations reveal how remarkable this woman’s career has been. I look for a possible Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. This movie does contain some violence, but no graphic sexuality or the usual offering of vulgar language. Near the end, I turned to my wife and said, “Do you believe this? There’s no “F” word in the entire movie.” It is a learning film worth accessing by aspiring actors. Refreshing, indeed, was watching a film that was good that did not rely on special effects, sex, nudity, vile language, and non-stop violence and weaponry.

MARK’S NO BAKE CHOCOLATE OATMEAL COOKIES

Makes about 60 cookies by Mark Rodolico
INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup salted butter, softened 1 package (8oz) cream cheese, softened 1-1/2 cups sugar 1 large egg, room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup powdered sugar 3 tsp baking powder Additional 1/2 cup powdered sugar (to roll dough in) INSTRUCTIONS:
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees. • Using an electric mixer, beat butter, cream cheese, and sugar until blended. Add egg and vanilla. • In separate bowl, mix flour, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, and baking powder together. With mixer on low, begin adding dry mix to creamed mixture. • Using a 2-tablespoon scoop, scoop dough and roll in powdered sugar. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheets, two per row. • Bake 8-11 minutes, until they no longer appear wet on top. Cool 5 minutes, then move to a wire rack.

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup butter (1 stick) 1/2 cup milk 3 cups rolled oats 1 teaspoon Mexican vanilla extract 1 cup peanut butter (I like chunky)

• Line two cookie sheets with wax or parchment paper. • Stir together cocoa and sugar until there are no lumps. • In a large saucepan, heat cocoa/sugar mixture, butter, and milk, stirring occasionally, and boil for one minute. • Remove from heat and add oatmeal, Mexican vanilla, peanut butter; thoroughly combine. • Drop by teaspoonfuls onto lined cookie sheets and cool until hardened. • Store in airtight container in refrigerator.

• Preheat oven to 350°. Spray non-stick mini muffin pan(s) with cooking oil. • In large bowl, mix together flour, salt and baking powder. • Add cranberries, dates, and nuts. Toss until evenly coated with flour mixture. • In a small bowl, beat eggs, sugar, lemon zest and juice until light and fluffy. Pour over fruit and nut mixture. Mix thoroughly to coat fruit and nuts. • Drop a heaping tablespoon in each. Bake for 15 minutes or until done.

1 cup butter, softened 1 small package (3oz) cream cheese, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg yolk 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour (sift before measuring) 4 ounces slivered or blanched almonds (optional) Seedless raspberry jam INSTRUCTIONS: • Using an electric mixer, cream butter and cream cheese until smooth. Slowly beat in sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and extracts. Stir flour into the creamed mixture just until blended. Shape into a disk and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill at least 1 hour. • Heat oven to 350°. • In a food processor, pulse almonds until coarsely ground. • Shape dough into small balls and roll in ground almonds; place on parchment-lined baking sheet. With your finger, make an indentation in each ball. Drop 1/4 teaspoon of jam in each indentation. • Bake 12–15 minutes, or until lightly browned and filling is bubbling.

1/2 cup crushed potato chips, non-ruffled 1/2 cup finely ground walnuts or pecans 1 1/2 cups flour 1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg yolk Confectioners’ sugar INSTRUCTIONS:
• Preheat oven to 350°. • In a bowl, combine potato chips, walnuts, flour and set aside. • In another bowl, cream together sugar and butter until fluffy, then beat in egg yolk and vanilla. Beat in dry ingredients until mixture is integrated. • With damp hands, form dough into one-inch balls and place 1/2 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake until cookies just start to color (15-18 minutes). • Cool slightly and roll in confectioners’ sugar. Enjoy!
• Preheat oven to 325°, Butter a 13" x 9" baking dish and line with 2 sheets of parchment paper (or plastic wrap) leaving a 1-inch overhang on all sides, set aside. • In the bowl of an electric stand mixer cream together butter and sugar until well combined. Mix in almond extract. • With mixer set on low, slowly add in flour until combined (it will appear dry and sandy at first but it will start to come together, if it doesn't you can add a few teaspoons of milk). • Stir in 2 1/2 Tbsp sprinkles. Press dough into an even layer in prepared pan with the bottom of a flat measuring cup to help smooth it out. Chill in refrigerator 20 minutes. • Lift dough from pan using parchment paper overhang. Cut into 1/2-inch squares using a large sharp knife. Sprinkle more sprinkles over the top if desired and gently press into dough. • Transfer cookies to an ungreased baking sheet (do not line pan with parchment or silicone liners), spacing 1/2-inch apart. (Return unbaked cookies to refrigerator). • Bake 8 - 12 minutes or until bottoms begin to brown slightly. Repeat process with remaining squares. • Cool completely and store in an airtight container. his year has seen rapid acceleration in technology adoption and advancement. It has also shown us how many lack what most of us consider essentials: laptops, computers, smartphones, tablets and high-speed Internet. That last became apparent when posts began appearing on social media and articles were written in major news outlets about kids who were sitting on the ground outside coffee shops, fast food restaurants – any place with unsecured Internet so they could go to school or do their homework. Hard to believe this is still happening here in the United States, and even in our community of Vero Beach. We would like to believe that’s only occurring in Third World countries, but reality has shown us otherwise. I recently spoke with a fellow geek in New Zealand and he said 92% of their country has been wired for fiber optic Internet, and Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite Internet is rolling out as well. I also spoke to a man in rural Michigan who had the equivalent of dialup speeds at his home, yet he can drive to his office 40 minutes away and have high-speed Internet to do video calls, have his kids go online for school, and more. Technology is still a land of the haves and the have-nots. Population density and wealth drive where and how technology rolls out. COVID has shown us how critical and necessary access to the Internet and computers have become to our daily lives. Without them students cannot learn while at home, teachers cannot teach those not allowed into
school, businesses cannot sell their products and services, stock their stores, get paid, or pay their employees. Governments don’t run without technology, and even farmers rely on it to water, plant and harvest their crops. Technology is everywhere for those who have access and can make our lives easier – especially this year when we’re stuck in our homes. I ran a meeting via Zoom the other day and one of the participants had to go somewhere else to participate because they don’t have Internet at their house, nor do they have cell phones. This person lives in our area. For them it is a choice, but for many others it’s not. The National Cristina Foundation (www.cristina. org) takes donations of gently-used technology and repurposes them to give to those who would have nothing otherwise. A tech friend of mine in Seattle cleaned out a storage unit he had and donated several dozen computers, laptops, modems, routers, keyboards, mice and monitors and webcams that were all updated with new software and given to those in need. You probably have a few older pieces of tech or old cell phones in your home just lying around collecting dust. To you the equipment was too old, too slow, or just wasn’t as cool as the new stuff that came out. To others, it is a lifeline. This holiday season consider cleaning out your closets and donating that tech to someone in need. Do it through a group like the National Cristina Foundation so they can secure the computers and ensure your data is no longer on the donated device. For the recipient, it can make a world of difference!

S H I F T When did we accept anxiety where hope once had dominion?
M
ost of us Americans hate to wait. It could be all Burger King’s fault. “Have it your way,” they said, and we drove through and picked up our food going from hungry to full in ten minutes or less. Immediate gratification became a way of life, and we now rate a company’s value by how fast they respond to our needs. It’s interesting what we are willing to sacrifice in quality in exchange for speed of attainment. Last month we were waiting as a nation. It was difficult for many. We are unpracticed and it showed up as restlessness. Waiting is now considered an irritation and is directly tied to anxiety levels and stress. When did our society sell out? When did we accept anxiety where hope once had dominion? It was a most likely a spiritual shift. Perhaps we lost the foundational principle that God is in charge. No matter what the outcome of any situation, He can use all for the good of those who love Him. Without that belief as a foundational truth, circumstances become all-important. We strive to confront them, change them, and control them. We let them decide our moods, our plans, and our perspectives. We mistreat each other and pick sides. We judge, criticize, and close our minds to hope. Today, let us remember that there is One Who has all power. Let us rest in the knowing that He is good. We will be all right, no matter what outcomes we face. We can be assured that nothing, absolutely nothing, is happening by chance. The plan may be just what we wanted or exactly what we feared. No matter. God is on the throne, and everything will be all right if we turn our hearts and minds to Him.

t is that time of year again when we celebrate Christmas. A time of peace, a time of laughter, and a time of joy. Sadly, many of us cannot relate and it feels like happiness is the last thing on our minds. This year has been one for the record books. After a year of chaos, sickness, uncertainty, and political unrest, a lot of us feel like we are just done with 2020. This does not even pertain to all the personal challenges we have faced this year. When it comes to the true meaning of Christmas, the reality is that although we might not feel like it is true, we actually have a lot of reasons to have great joy, even amidst many hardships. Why, you may ask? Because … you still have breath inside of you, you still have purpose inside of you, and you still have a big God watching over you. We sing “Joy to the world, a King has come.” The real reason the world can have joy is because of the “King” that has come, if they choose to accept Him in their lives. This joy is not a temporary feeling of happiness but rather a true, deep feeling of contentment that can only come from God Himself.

I want you to imagine yourself being sentenced to death, knowing that there is nothing you can do to get out of it. Your death is sealed, and you are heading to death row and there is nothing you can do to change it. What if I told you someone is being born and He is going to come and take your place? You won’t have to die. He will not only take your place, but you also can experience a life filled with everlasting peace and joy. I think the majority of us would be overjoyed. Well … that is exactly what Jesus did: He came and took our place. Christmas is the celebration of His birth. He came to give us life and life more abundantly. The reality is that no matter what you have gone through this past year, you have a Savior that not only took your place for eternity, but also walks with you right now and He can bring healing to any situation you are facing right now.
